Grant lotus. And im Vicki Liviakis thanks for joining us for kron 4 news at 8 the highly unusual sight all across the bay area skies. Its just better. All people are talking about today indeed taking a live look outside right now across the bay from the bay bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge. The san mateo bridge to the richmond sandra fell bridge. It looks normal right now, but all day. It was just about as dark run for chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow begins our Team Coverage explaining. What weve been witnessing in how long the skies could stay like this lawrence whats going on yet let my entire life here in california have never seen a day like today wake up to the orange skies and certainly. Was concern looking at the maps though you can see where it came from not the more fires locally but number we have the paradise fire a few years back that but all the smoke in the bay area will now weve got another fire near theyre called the bear fire. Weve also got the august complex and that also brought that smoke back in the bay area but it was at such a thick level, but it actually of the colors that changed the atmosphere really kind of separating the specter of youve ever seen a rainbow youve got all those colors youve got the blue which is a shortwave radiation youve got some of the green thats also short violent short, then you start to get a long way radiation that some of the yellows the oranges and the reds, those are able to penetrate through that smoke lair and thats why youre able to get that orange colored sky out there and certainly an eerie look in the atmosphere and that continues out there this looking from the east bay hills this is berkeley hear this a combination of some of smoke out there as well some of the fog that is really kind of saved us from the worst of the air quality around the bay area the 2 boundaries between these dont mix very well so thats kept most of the smoke and the pollutants away from the bay area so here we go weve got a bit of a westerly wind right now thats what we want we want more of a sea breeze outside 8 Miles Per Hour in a San Francisco 7th in all 14 in a fairfield late today we saw a little bit of improvement in the atmosphere and you may have noticed a change in the color starting light now and so that dark orange start a should move toward a little shift toward the grey pattern in the atmosphere but heres what were looking at now the clouds gather along the coastline instead of that northeasterly wind that brought that smoke or away from the fires. Well now were starting to see a little more of a north northwesterly wind and that is going to carry some of that smoke away from the bay area so i think were looking at smoke conditions over the next couple of days that fog certainly helps out especially in the lower levels but things are going to change in the upper levels of the atmosphere to is were going to see High Pressure building in from the south the clockwise rotation around that should begin to transport some of that smoke a little further to the east and hopefully clear our skies in the coming days ahead guys. Lets hope so thank you lawrence in the north bay Doctors Today said they saw more patients coming in because of the smoky conditions. Yeah joining us now live from sfo kron fours noelle bellow and well youd almost expect more delays or cancellations with the sky. Looking the what did you find out. There are actually only a couple dozen delays here at sfo which like you said you would expect there to be much more of a crazy impact with the sky looking so thick and hazy however because San FranciscoInternational Airport is operating with just about 40 of the flights that they normally would have due to the pandemic there wasnt a domino effect alike there normally would be in conditions like this but delayed or not the people that i spoke with who landed here said that it felt like they stepped into another planet. If you like it landed on filled with disbelief, it was frightening. It was an absolutely frightening and concern in their eyes travelers from denver were in awe as they landed at San FranciscoInternational Airport wednesday afternoon and planes coming in and you see that. It looks like over cast. And then it gets this orange tint to it you go thats not quite right. And it gets deeper and deeper and then you see the ground through this orange. Even folks coming from Southern California were shocked at the difference in skys news to smog overlay and i see that all the time, but this definitely has a whole different feel to as disorienting as the smoky haze may be from the ground commercial Airline Pilot settler explained the conditions above are a lot like flying in fog this when we have low Visibility Conditions like smoke or is our instruments as guidance for navigation and stage situational awareness. Well grant and the skies have just been eerie all across the bay area since we woke up this morning and were seeing some incredible pictures on social media and also from our viewers, well start first in San Francisco, heres a picture of coit tower that red orange sky on full display here. We also have some images that were taken around 11 oclock this morning by kron fours morning meteorologist john trouble. The Transamerica Pyramid here and the surrounding areas just drowning in this daytime darkness. It was a similar story along the embarcadero heres a shot of the Ferry Building as well as the bay bridge where we can see just how eerie the sky looked today and another angle of the Transamerica Pyramid we also got some great viewer video out of the east bay take a look. The skies just im look at yeah an real is right you could see that red orange haze absolutely filling the east bay skies really impressive video here and kind of as well. Heres how the oakland estuary look this morning, the red hue in the skies reflecting on to the water. We also have another video from the east bay that was taken around 9 oclock this morning at crown beach in alameda. Its crazy that this was 9 oclock in the morning can barely make out the entire peninsula and also the San Francisco skyline you would normally see that in the also have some video that was taken by one of our producers as they headed into work today, this was the commute on westbound highway 24 really dangerous out there for driving kind of distracting because youre looking around and seeing whats going on. Finally will move into the north kron 4 anchor grant lotus this was his car this morning covered in rat asked. Grant it might be time for a car wash just saying we also received some video from one of our viewers in mill valley, you can see the fog layer just sitting right on top of the trees is that mix of the head of smoke and up fog really creating some. Interesting colors in the skies today we also received some great images from nevado and youll see just how red the sky looked in those pictures as well and also kron fours terisa stasio she was out in a marine county today checking out the haze. You can barely even see mount tam in this picture. Its hard to see as well as all the ash that she captured that was on the ground so many of you are sending us an up pictures and videos today, thank you so much for that if you have any we would still love to see them you can reach us at breaking news at kron 4 dot com. Weve also posted a whole gallery of all the photos that have come into our newsroom on our website kron 4 dot com you can tag me in some pictures too. Live right now in the newsroom. Im Justine Waldman kron 4 news all right just seen in yeah grant maybe she washed that car given a day or so. Wait till things settle down all this hayes was particularly bad in San Francisco where the the orange glow stick around all day long the morning commute a locked looked a lot more like evening residents, you know started their day under darken skies. Kron fours Maureen Kelly continues our Team Coverage from San Francisco where she got reaction from people out in these creepy conditions. Throughout during roadwork on front street had to work with their lights on it looks like dawn in this video, but it was really only in america been the background surrounded by a sky, the color of a rotting orange peel out on market street, the Ferry Building is also set against a dusty backdrop. The muni drivers usually drive with their lights on during the day today they needed to. Construction workers on their lunch break if their sandwiches in the glow of the lit up banks, im over at Civic Center People stretching their legs during the noon hour stopped to snap pictures of city hall. In this surreal setting marveling at the strange circumstances, were finding ourselves in today kind of maybe a light once in a lifetime sort of. The data experience the. The night time during the day and the sky looking bright orange. There arent enough are but never quite like this, but i love that was like. They moved us to mars and not tell nobody almost been in San Francisco in the street lights are looks apocalyptic. The skies tend to more is it start. Not all the street lights are on at least in the parks, some are on timers. But there are others like the ones you see here that operate on sensors there on because the darkness is triggering them, making them think its nighttime ive been working out in this weather all day as well and id say the one. Piece of the good news is that here in the city at least im not smelling any smoke in the air. But it has been dark and hard to see sometimes. So much so i actually had a break out my trusty headlamp just to get some work done. Reporting from San Francisco. Im Maureen Kelly kron 4 news. The air quality around the bay has been spotty at best for the past few weeks and maureen said as much as we bring in Lawrence Karnow it it didnt really smell that smoky today relative to the way its been in some days the past few was it healthy to breathe whats going to happen in the future is there fog in there as well whats going on some parts the bay area not as bad just because she said she wouldnt smell the smoke that smoke where they came in was a few 1000 feet above the surface, not mixing down to the surface, were very lucky to get the marine layer out there today and really its hard for them to mix those 2 boundaries dont like to mix between each other so we have the low service pressure. And then we the onshore flow. The brawl with that low clouds and the fog that help to keep some a fresher air around the part of the bay area, heres the very latest the weather pressure everybody that moderate blue building up pretty much for the entire bay area you get over to a place like concord a little unhealthy still a little healthy in a little more pretty bad actually into fairfield right now blair, youre kind of right on the cusp there but in the San Francisco get along the coastline to get that seabreeze you can get fresh ocean air right off the clean water there and that is to bring some better quality now tomorrow. I think even though were going to improve are still look at the potential theres a very poor air quality is going to take a while to clean things out a lot of smoke came into our skies last night so north bay still looking up or air quality for quantity east bay and in the south bay, the coast probably not too bad, but youre going to see pockets were going to see that ash see that smoke but hopefully little less orange your skies by tomorrow. The Congressional Republicans unveiling a covid stimulus package hopes of sending Financial Relief to millions of americans plus the chp issuing words of warning for bay check out these before and after picture showing the smokefilled morning sky above San Francisco, they were taken yesterday and then today the darker red sky from wildfire smoke obviously blocking out the sun. And it has captured everyones attention today. Yes, sometimes you say everybodys talking about it. Well. This is everybody today the really unusual color in the sky also can be a dangerous distraction if youre trying to focus behind the wheel it is and thats prompting a warning tonight from the california highway patrol. Officers are advising drivers to resist the temptation of trying to take photos or videos of the sky while youre behind the wheel because obviously the the consequences could be deadly. Look ahead to view and Pay Attention that will help you prevent a collision or some catastrophic thing that you do not want to happen which is like driving in the rain flowed out. In these conditions. I chp advises everybody you know following the same rules of the road when youre driving at night. Put your headlights on and before you get on the road make sure that you clear your windshield of any ash that may have fallen from the sky. Coming up firefights popping up in portland. We are hearing from one oregon resident about the conditions that forced her complaint. I did start our clock to make sure the 8 oclock at night thats what it seems they added i wake up too late that i just fall asleep or really confusing start to the day for a lot of people he top story tonight smoke from a major wildfire in Mendocino County settling on top of a marine layer in the bay area today turning the sky various shades of red and orange. This is a view of oracle park with downtown San Francisco. There in the background, the hazy clouds of smoke are filtering out blue light in according to bay area. Air Quality Management district thats making it appear orange, yeah and dark leading to this kind of eerie glow that weve been seeing. All day long yeah and heres a view of that smoke from space. Satellite image capturing a time lapse videos you can see there the smoke is blanketing much of california yesterday from sunrise to sundown and a live look right now at the Golden Gate Bridge drove on it today and often you cant see much because of the fog but today was as if. The 5 was mixing with Everything Else going on ash was falling people are still out there walking though trying to i dont get a picture of nothing bridges painting kind of orange scored just blended in. Our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow joins us now with details on that the frightening sight out there not only going to be around street and i think it will start to improve will probably have still little called the atmosphere tomorrow but today probably the worst of it this one we said the offshore winds were talking about that yesterday all those a strong offshore was were worried about fires in the bay area. We did get the fires but the smoke coming from other the fires in the north of us sweeping back into the bay area bringing with it smoking by the time we got here the green is such a letter that was so thick filtering out part of the visible light spectrum were left with only that oranges gray glow outside and thats where we sit tonight, although started improve late in the evening and now looks like it will improve a little bit more as we head in toward tomorrow on one thing we have to thank for 4 is the fog and low clouds the surge of that marine there that is going to help to clear out bringing some fresh ocean air off the coastline that is going to surge well on shore tonight in fact watch this overnight time maybe some drizzle along the coastline. And that will push into the bay filling into the bay, maybe all the way into the Central Valley by tomorrow morning. So thats a significant push bringing some little fresh air early on tomorrow morning, then by the afternoon. We start to break that up a little bit i still think weve got some very hazy skies in the forecast around the bay area. I think theres any way to get rather just so much smoke out there right now, but it should be a little bit improved by tomorrow and i think it will slowly improve as we head in toward the weekend. So yeah that being said over the next few days were going to see the temperatures probably going to bounce back a little bit for the you know the numbers today got knocked down about 20 degrees below the forecast what they were supposed to be just because of all the smoke. I think tomorrow we come back a little bit maybe the warmest valleys up in the 80s youll see a lot of 70s a few 80s inside the bay and 50s 60s along the coastline, we may warm up a little bit with clearing skies on friday only to come back down as High Pressure weakens over the weekend. But right now looks like improving air quality more of a westerly wind for the foreseeable future. Thanks lauren so these dark and smoky conditions certainly threw a wrench in the work day for a lot of people who are up early. And you still have to go punch the time clock right forcefully to all reports now from the east bay where folks trying to make the best of an unhealthy environment. Eddie agular says his day got off to a confusing start he was extremely surprising hes a fire inspector for bail arm assigned to survey a few buildings at Pleasant Hill park. He basically began his shift in the dark isnt something ive never seen before have never experienced anything like this so its quite shocking to see that. Morning is that morning it actually looked a sensitive severson rice gallery rodriguez, not twice about keeping your head and here am for nails and spa in Pleasant Hill, but eventually chose to show up she thought it might be uncomfortable outdoors but says it was the exact opposite the weather was cooler than the past few days and the umbrella provided some protection. Plus she figured the afternoon might be worse says why did it now and they said it might the smoke might come down later so its like you know what lets get this done now while its still pretty high. So now its about doing it on jodi perry says the conditions were bearable in downtown woman free plus the sidelines and Outdoor Dining area.
