The Santa Cruz Mountains in the oakland area right the Oakland Hills above a 1000 feet or so the diablo range also looking at some very gusty winds there and that will be the case some of these gusts of 25 to maybe 45 Miles Per Hour maybe the gusting higher than that in spots are going to see that especially over the top of the mountains very very gusty winds right latest on the computer models you can see youve got a little bit of a breeze out there in fact a little bit of a sea breeze returned today but not for long all of a sudden we get that offshore wind look at the colors rolling in the bay area and these are down the urban areas got 2030 mile an hour winds down a place like Petaluma Santa Rosa also calistoga sonoma up on the mountain tops. It will be a lot more gusting than that of course we are primed with fire with treasure record breaking heat, so certainly some dangerous weather ahead as fire danger is going to be running extremely high. Thank you or some other big element to this story that were tracking the critical fire weather leading pg and e toward a possible power shut off power would be shut off only if the states grid operator calls for it but pg and e is alerting customers now it is monitoring the weather in 21 counties and that includes sonoma and napa counties, the utility has a special page explaining the power shutoffs and who would be affected you can type in your address to see if you are affected or you can search by county from there you can also see an estimated time for a power shut off. Though right now at this time cal iso has not called for any shut offs. We also are tracking says with thats been going on our noelle bellow has more in this report. Smoke and hazy skies didnt stop visitors at yosemite over the Labor Day Holiday these images coming from a viewer showing the copper haze that completely blanketed the half dome area, even still plenty of visitors stopped to take in the haunting view up now at lake tahoe where people descended upon Incline Village as early as 06 00am to celebrate labor day. Now to the latest on the coronavirus the United States is still leading the world in the number of cases with nearly 6. 3 million. And 189,000 deaths, california leads the nation in cases with 741,000 around the world. 7741,000 then worldwide more than 880,000 people have died since the pandemic started this data from Johns Hopkins university. Instead of a california couples Baby Gender Reveal Party going up in the gore and blue smoke it went up in flames, the generator as part of a gender reveal party, an elder bill ranch dorado park in Southern California reportedly sparked. One of almost 2 dozen wildfires that are now burning across california cal fire confirmed that a Smoke Generator as part of that party could be behind whats called the eldorado fire in San Bernardino county that fire. So far prompted evacuations in parts of yucaipa thats a city of about 54,000 and the surrounding area. Officials have been reminding residents said it doesnt take much to start a fire with these extremely dry conditions. No charges have yet been filed related to this particular fire. A Massive Wildfire in Fresno County continues to spread crews have not been able to get any of it contained its called the creek fire. It started friday night and by this morning. It had burned more than 78,000 acres more than 200 hikers were rescued over the weekend after the fire quickly trapped them. Evacuation orders extend through several mountain communities in fresno and madera counties. Officials have not been able to determine how many homes were damaged or even destroyed, but they say thousands of structures are still in the fires path firefighters in the bay area continue to tackle those 3 major fires here in the bay area, the lnu lightning complex fire in the north bay is currently at 91 containment with more than 375,000 acres burned. The scu complex burning in the east bay and the south bay is up to 93 containment nearly 397,000 acres burned and firefighters battling the czu lightning complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties are now 4 points to 76 containment since yesterday with more than 86,000 acres burned also the woodward fire at Point Reyes National seashore in marin county is now 95 contained it has burned more than 4800 acres wildfires have burned more than 2 million acres in california this year thats a state record in all of that happening before we actually hit the peak of the wildfire season. We do want to get a fuller understanding of the wildfire situation around california particularly here in the bay area tonight on the line with us now Daniel Berlant from cal fire. Thank you for being with us tonight so give us a sense now what is the worst area in the state the worst fires that youre worried about tonight. We are battling fires on a number of fronts and so its hard to really undetermined was the worst. I will say off of the fires have been burning in the bay area the north bay east bay and even down said it was announced we are making real bit progress on many evacuations have already been lifted and that is really a lot has to start moving in demobilized in a lot of the resources and moving on to some of the active fires specifically the creek fire in Fresno County has forced a number of evacuations and not communities outside of fresno but of fires in San Bernardino and san diego down in Southern California also are burning closer and closer to home and so just want to be a very busy week for us as weather conditions are just talking to our people for the next several yeah, lets talk about that real quick, so we were looking at a red flag warning starting later tonight and extending into i believe wednesday morning talk about what youre concerned about it were. Were were anticipating those hot dry winds coming out of the north and east right. Yeah, the National Weather service has issued a red flag warning not due to gusty winds and low humidity that coupled with the already extremely dry conditions in the extremely excessive heat in temperatures that weve been experiencing this last weekend not is going to elevate the fire risk now we have increased our staffing at additional firefighters that would otherwise down been off were stacking reserve requirement prevents ross longer hours so were making sure we have plenty of resources, not just the dollar the current. Dozen fires or so that are are boarding up and down the state, but the owners of the new ones just yesterday. Were on almost 50 new wildfires in california all of which contain it from police on a bridge in certain though is when the when its all of us will nays, im a guy named these fires eyes. She new start moore county. In light of the information youre providing whats the situation in terms of resources right now. Well right now we have over 14,000 firefighters are on the front not is down from the peak where we were just a couple weeks ago with all of the fires in the north and the east bay off and i like being a kid thats kind of giving us an opportunity some firefighters to get a little bit of rest a little bit of recovery on many firefighters have been assigned to the fires in incidents off a week out on any given the opportunity to get a little bit of arrests that theyre as fresh and they can be and were moving to other parts of the state you to be able to keep attack these fires as you mentioned the top of the hour. It says were not only getting into the peak of our fire season. We have a long road ahead is already suffered so many acres targets so much destruction. Im definitely not all that the fires is not like. And we know these 3 major complex fires burning in the bay area were started by lightning, but we just have we just talked about that situation in San Bernardino county where theres a gender reveal party and apparently a generator that was supposed to make a colored smoke. The signal the gender reveal the cause of that fire that is causing some big problems down there. What you want to say to folks to make sure that that kind of thing doesnt happen again. You know he just goes to show that it doesnt take much for a wildfire to spark and whereas we are just so busy with Mother Nature sparked is critically important that the next several days with high low humidity and increased everyone take extra extra precaution. It does not take much how dry it is for a fire this far and then you add the wins at wolf and the fire and so that is not the combination that we we live to see and thats why its so critical that everyone do their part to prevent sparking wildfires any sparked a fiery thing has the open flame is find the extra with a number of National Forest number campgrounds have fires can you cant fires number of closures be put in place is this is just its freeing fire is an island off just how busy are whos already as we just really cannot for another fire need the publics help for events marking the one side an uber land as always we appreciate your advice and information thank you from cal fire and right now pg e has a News Conference going on an update on the power situation and the red flag warning so lets go to that now and listen in. Hes a highrisk area so far this year and so that brings our total network up to 846 weather stations that we have that house is monitoring the wind event in real time and provide that critical intel when its safe to begin that restoration process and well be tracking that closely 24 7. Throughout this event. And so all that information at that weather station information is publicly available as well and so you can you can find it online and so with that id like to conclude a weather briefing and turned back over to you lindsay. So just to recap a warning we just really dry fuel on the ground and we have to have the winds coming in so this is a very high risk event that you described think tank ok thats an operational reaching out from our Incident Commander mike a lowerbody good my name is mark quinlan on the Incident Commander for this Public Safety power shutoff event. Im here to provide an operational briefing based on the weather intelligence status conscious covered with the sea. All began by stating that we activated our Emergency Operations before the weekend in anticipation for this weather threat. Stock cover all of the attributes about the weather in just how dangerous the conditions are. Once the oc or the Emergency Operation center activates. We pivot in immediately move into attempting to understand the overall impact to customers we do that by using the weather data that the Meteorology Team provides to the operational we attach to the best of our ability to define the scope of the the slide that were looking at right now the highlighted portions of our Service Territory represent what we believed to be the highest areas of fire danger of the getting right around midnight tonight into tomorrow morning you can see theyre grouped into 3 general clusters the majority of the the pg es Service Territories in the northern part of our Service Territory, theres a very small noted by the number 3 on the bottom of the slide thats kern but the majority of the of the impact is really in the sierra foothills including all the counties in the tribal areas that you can see listed on the slide. And if you look at how these groups are all put together roughly 172,000 or any scope for a Public Safety power shutoff and we dont take that decision lightly we understand the impact on our customers and our communities weve been working very hard. All learning from last years aps fiesta events and making improvements. Scott mentioned a few on the weather front. Weve made some operational improvements as well and we believe that these 3 years of scope for a very high risk for fire conditions and as such we tend to execute the Public Safety star power shutoffs in this area. With respect to when we believe these events are going to start. They they all vary in the really tied to the weather conditions as you know can change what we do in her current operational posture is constantly monitor the weather and we changed world, the racial posh or with the weather as it changes but as of this briefing we believe that the majority of the need to occur just prior to midnight for the majority of the areas youll see area one thats listed here on the slide actually begins a little earlier than that and thats all based on when the on safe weather conditions are anticipated to be in the area and we need to start our. Execution earlier than at to ensure that when the unsafe conditions are present our system is shot off and its in a safe posture thats the whole intent of the program. You can see area one starting at about 09 00pm this evening. We anticipate restoration of everything after we monitor and didnt he determined that the weather conditions are safe. We anticipate having everyone on by and today on wednesday, september 9th area to a little bit later start midnight again estimated restoration time end of day wednesday and then for kerr it the event starts a little later as you can see its part of that santa ana event thats occurring in the Southern Area deserve a surge or so as such. The customers in kerr county the shot time well be getting a little later and we still believe well have back restored by the time stated end of the day on wednesday. So as we transition to the next slide talk a little bit about she is that were doing to mitigate the impacts of Public Safety power shutoffs want to start with upper righthand side of the slide so 200 grid sexualizing devices. Use right now to make those geographic footprints as small as they can be we look at the weather risk we intend to do everything that we can in our power to. Reduce thats going to just be a very aggressive that were not interrupting you turn people off that exist outside of that danger zone so those are all in play this evening. 5 microgrids and substations have been. Utilized to uh to provide temporary generation on an island a capability if you look at those like her knees are areas that are set to protect main street. The local city or town may be surrounded by extreme fire danger but the actual point of commerce gas stores resources weve configured microgrids to be able to keep those areas energized while we shot off the infrastructure, other traverse us to the dangerous terrain that equates to roughly 69,000 customers who had avoided off of the 172,000 and hes already thinking about this would be if we did not have that capability. The 172,000 customers would be in the 200,000 range came and to conclude the slider bottom right is really about the resources that were going to leverage when its time to start restoring this match and we go into a where we constantly monitor the weather and when we see conditions become safe. We declared weather all clear and at that time we begin our patrols and a restoration activity its a very important that we control and infrastructure to verify that its safe thats up in the air and its in the clear free of ignition rest so we do that by performing patrols and we have 59 helicopters, 60 helicopters and one fixed air fixed airplane. Now we intend to use to do their listening to a live News Conference from virtual News Conference with officials from pg and e a learning. Everyone in its district and is a power grid district that there will be likely be depending on weather Public Safety power shutoffs this evening is that the next couple of days because of the red flag warning that dry brush and the diablo winds that are expected those are the 3 key factors as the genie is weighing at this time in making the assessment that there will be very likely some Public Safety power shutoff starting at midnight tonight and in the bay area it primarily affects a sonoma and napa counties lake county also affected by this midnight tonight wednesday evening at 07 00pm so well keep you posted. Thank you for that report of this is just coming in to the newsroom now the state grid operator just tweeted out that there are no foreseeable outages tonight now this is the tweet it says 3 hours into the flex alert and i so cal iso again is the cal independent system operator is not. Planning on any Power Outages so far they say that the man is looking manageable for now and they are saying to the public we appreciate your efforts now to conserve just a reminder. This is separate from pg and e fijian a now is talking about. Public safety power shutoff says very different from the grid shut off so cal, iso deals with the amount of power available to all of us in the state of california. Pg and e deals with its customers in this area and it is considering 22 counties may have power shutoffs based on the weather conditions. The dry weather the dot diablo winds that are going on right now so you have to stay alert for the pg and e shut offs on related to the power supply showed off 2 separate things. All right this confusing for all of us that weve got to stay alert. Intense smoke from California Wildfires is plaguing the bay area in fact it is also traveling hundreds of miles away take a look at this this is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration captured this time lapse video over the weekend of the smoke spreading from the California Wildfires as smoke is also causing significant air quality issues in a wide range of locations. The life. This guy think well look at yes and you can certainly see that smoke our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow here that smoke blown all the way up in idaho. With a knife and not good air quality around the bay area that were seeing right now even inside the bay now were seeing some poor quality that continues right now into parts of San Francisco, little fresh air a little sea breeze right along the immediate coastline, poor air quality in Oakland Richmond martinez parts of hayward also in livermore were going to see throughout the bay area playing out again and weve got high fire dangers were going to see some very strong gusty winds developing overnight tonight and tomorrow now that offshore wind is likely to bring more that smoke right back up toward the coastline. So some of those places spared today. Well maybe not so for tomorrow. Today what an amazing day of record heat 112 degrees that was a record alltime for the state in the more 111 in Napa Santa Rosa checked in at a 110 degrees also record richmond a 107 degrees a record one 07 a record in redwood city, a 106 in canfield and were not done there had to go to page 2 the breaking all the records here 96 that was a record in oakland. Some cooler weather on the way, but also some high fire danger to have dear california. We know these are challenging times. Rest assured, you are not alone. Weve all had to adapt. And with summer here, your energy bills might go up with rising temperatures. Together, we can save energy and money. Try closing your shades during the day. Setting your ac to 78 or higher. Or cooling off with a fan when you can. United we are always stronger. Stay well, california, and keep it golden. All right this is our top story was happening with Power Supplies because of the weather and because of the fires we need to start with l
