He has the very latest on the firefight good evening drop. Good evening just seen thats right out here in the Santa Cruz Mountains once again firefighters are quite literally a fighting fire with fire as you say i am here in felton about the 7 miles north of santa cruz, which has long since been evacuated, but it is safe for now and firefighters intend to keep it that way im gonna take you for a tour right now about a mile up a felt an empire road here lets take a look at some video. This is about 3 oclock this afternoon where a firing operations are backfiring as its known is underway. Let me paint a quick picture for you firefighters have fire lines south of here protecting Santa Cruz Scotts valley and you see santa cruz likewise to the north a closer to San Mateo County also fire lines there. In fact some of the Evacuation Orders have been lifted there but not so much here. The problem is along empire great road and east thats where there are still some active fire there a lot of territory left to burn which still filton in some of the other communities here thats why firefighters need to burn that area off so theres nothing left for the fire to burn when its get when it gets there. Lets take a closer look. Hot spot at the time firefighters are gaining ground on the czu lightning complex fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Its hoped backfires here along felt an empire road from upper fall creek to empire grade where one encounters many of those spot fires down trees, Falling Rocks and thick smoke will help keep the fire away from felton been lawman and neighborhoods in the nearby san lorenzo valley. And that way so when the main fire makes its way to the communities that are affected. All ground feels already burned up and it helps us put the fire out quicker. The czu complex fires raged 80,000 acres in santa cruz and san mateo counties, some 80,000 people have been evacuated. 538 structures are lost most of them in santa cruz county. Although the number of actual homes involved is not clear. Crews recovered the body of a 63 yearold felton woman thought to have died of natural causes. And sheriffs deputies are searching for at least 5 people reported as missing solved a lot of cases so far that have come over 20 cases where people have been reported missing in these zones and theyve been located in shelters or at Family Friends and just hadnt yet communicated that with the rest of their family and friends firefighters are being aided by cooler foggy weather wednesday began with the fire 19 contained. To the north and west there is better progress. Firefighters hope to complete a perimeter around the fire over the next 24 to 36 hours. And say there could be some sense of normalcy restored here in roughly 4 or 5 days. And with those firing operations we can make the fire do what we want to do and set of us reacting to the fire. Big. Cal fire has crews currently evaluating which areas may be reopened first but as you heard is not going to happen anytime soon because not only does it have to be safe in terms of the fire itself. But there are a lot of as you saw in the video a lot of downed trees a lot of rock falls and a lot of damage to the infrastructure itself so those will all have to be a inspected and declared safe before people are going to be allowed to go back in but right now the fire here the czu lightning complex fire about 19 contained firefighters making really Good Progress you can see less smoke in the good weather here so far so good today live in felton rob fladeboe kron 4 news stage of the game. Thank you so much rob. Were also tracking the lnu lightning complex fires burning the north bay, those fires have burned more than 357,000 acres across 5 counties. Sonoma napa solano lake and yolo the flames have killed 5 people and injured 4 others nearly one a 1000 structures have been destroyed 250 or damaged and hundreds more are still threatened tonight. Containment though did rise to 33 . Firefighters battling the western portion of the lnu complex fires known as the wall bridge fire thats right near guerneville and healdsburg well theyre getting some extra hands to help battle this very stubborn blaze. Today nearly 300 members of the California ArmyNational Guard arrived to help out for us. Dan kerman is live at the Cal Fire Base Camp at the Sonoma County fairgrounds in santa rosa. Yes, the very latest on this good even death. Thats right this is a welcome a rival for cal fire as weve been hearing all along resources are very very low for all of these fires because there are so many of them this gives them an additional 300 personnel about to help with these fires, especially the ones as you mentioned burning near guerneville and healdsburg they say they will be put on the fire lines as early as tomorrow. Nearly 300 members of the California ArmyNational Guard have arrived in the north bay to help battle the wall breed section of the l a new fire. Many of my soldiers of this impacts their home and so this is personal to them to be able to not only support the state look communities but also their families. The soldiers arrived at the Cal Fire Base Camp at the Sonoma County fairgrounds in santa rosa wednesday afternoon and white pickups and military vehicles. Given the number of fires burning across california. And the way resources are not only stretched across the state that coming in from out of state and the use of the call for National Guard is absolutely needed and appreciated many of these soldiers have fought fire before. But all of spent the last few days training with cal fire Officials Say theyll be working his hand crews, cutting containment line. Theyre literally being put right into the fire line at to help us create. Some of those containment lines so that we can get the containment percentage is up here on the wall bridge fire which ultimately led to allowing people to return home. The firefighters though replace will focus on protecting homes and mopping up. Firefighters say making progress in the next few days is critical. Were on day 3 able to afford to the fiveday window of opportunity where the humiditys came up we got that close to limp fluence here which improved our weather conditions and thats the absolute time that we need to take advantage of resources like the National Guard where we can take advantage of the fire behavior where its not necessarily. You know rapidly move in any direction that the humidity is up and the fires more and more of a creepy mode so we can get these crews in there and actually physically construct containment lines well actually be beneficial to this incident. Now as happens most afternoons winds are really picking up here in santa rosa never a good notion for those who are fighting fire. We can tell you that cal fire personnel will be with these soldiers every step of the way there again expected to hit the fire lines thursday morning. Live in santa rosa dan kerman kron 4 news. Thank you so much dan and some other north bay residents are now being temporarily allowed inside the burn zone to assess the damage to their homes. This was the scene in the various a highlands today which is an Unincorporated Community and napa county tennessee fire is still advancing to the east but fire crews are making progress on containment. There are concerns about too many people were turning to the burn zones at once because Evacuation Orders are still in place. One couple escorted into the burn zone got to see that their home was ok but their neighbors were not so lucky. Heartbreaking for a lot of people. A life long way to go. With american food. Cal fire says Utility Companies including pg and e are now on the scene clearing away debris and also checking power lines making sure that the area is safe before people can return to their homes. In Sonoma County now the walbridge fire is still threatening structures but kron 4 sleep to call reports some families in healdsburg who were evacuated last week are now returning home to their check on their land or right out the rest of the storm from their own property, its been 8 days since wonder moak and her husband lloyd evacuated their home on west side road in healdsburg very very stressful. Both returned wednesday morning though Evacuation Orders are still in effect in their area were going to hunker down here. Yeah, this is the 3rd time in 4 years a Natural Disaster has forced the most out of their home one does says its never something shell get used to you cant relax youre constantly looking at the maps and. Constantly listening to the tv wanting more so thats thats been really hard oaks trailer has kept them warm from a safe distance while firefighters worked the lnu lightning complex fire encompassing the walbridge fire burning in healdsburg. Their property is near the bishops Ranch Vineyards and wineries the smoky air is tough to breathe, but flames are not visible still wanders says theyre not out of the woods yet weve been watching the cow map. And everything is yellow instead of red now so. We were hoping we could just come back home and then if we need to leave. Well lay. Signs outside of the most home expressed admiration for First Responders camped out in Sonoma County fighting on the front lines one day is also thinking about Community Members who have suffered property loss, almost feel guilty that minds not gone, you know, its its you get that survivor guilt a mentally taxing experience with no end in sight in healdsburg phillipe djegal all kron 4 news. And were also monitoring the scu complex fires that continue to burn in the east and south bays this. Is the largest of the 3 complex fires burning more than 365,000 acres across alameda contra costa santa clara, san joaquin and stanislaus counties but so far this fire has been the least destructive 31 structures have been destroyed and 6 damaged. Although about 20,000. More are still threatened. Cal fire is reporting 25 containment at least 5 people have been injured during the firefight and lets check in now with our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow for look at the conditions. Firefighters are up against tonight and i also im curious if theres any relief from the smoky air lawrence yeah, pretty rural location that were seeing this fire burning here certainly. There are some structures out there some farmland and some people with some homes but it continues to burn in these areas and boy the winds have been kicking up that sea breeze really picking up this afternoon mention though the humidity has also come up so thats really helped out the firefighters now looks like around the bay area thats the best thing that could happen so far the humidity on the rise, you see low clouds and the fog but the winds theyve been kicking up we could easily see some gusts maybe 20 maybe some 30 mile an hour gusts in around some of these fire zones, so certainly got to watch out for that as we head through the evening hours this going kind of play out the next couple days along the coastline, much higher humidity there. The winds more of a northwesterly direction now as they had a switch member of the weekend we saw some those winds coming up from the south now were switching back again to more of a northwesterly wind that is carrying with a lot of moisture in the atmosphere to so that is good news for them more fog and low clouds. Yeah, you may not like to see that all the time, but this is good news for firefighters. Marine theyre going to start to compress those we get into the weekend a kind of deep in quite a bit allowing for that marine air to move well on shore humidity. Yes, certainly on the rise again this evening. This is good to go to see the moisture really begin to fill in all across the bay area look at that even around some the fire some that humidity over 90 some very wet outside that will slow down the progress of the fires overnight tonight. But again winds will pick up with that afternoon sea breeze late the day tomorrow just in back to you thank you so much lauren some of dozens of wildfires burning across the bay area, the fastmoving flames have forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes. Many others have not been ordered to evacuate, but theyve received warnings from cal fire to be ready to go at a moments notice kron fours ken wayne joins us now from the newsroom to break down where these orders are in effect and he has the latest there that you think and evening justine yeah, a lot of may not live close to these fires or even the Fire Evacuation areas, but once you see these maps will get an id. Fires burning right now in Northern California but lets zoom in on some of the specific locations here we are at the l a new fire the complex fire. You see this you go case a big chunk of Sonoma County looks like its a kind of sparsely populated, but you start to zoom in and then you get an idea that this really is closer to a lot of communities and you might expect, heres the town of cloverdale all of this yellow area on the west side of cloverdale is under an evacuation warning. So thats right next to that community down highway one o one geyserville looks like its clear but then we get into healdsburg very popular tourist town a lot of people going there and just west of dry creek which is this blue ribbon right here west of highway one o one all of this area were there are number of very well known wineries that operate all back in here this is a mandatory evacuation area you see these are. Thermal locations that are pointed out on this map and then all south of that were talking about the Russian River area here is guerneville evacuation on the north side of the russian the evacuation the green area on the south side of the river so thats that part of the lnu complex and we jump over to the Lake Berryessa area all of this blue and purple is also mandatory evacuation area and you look right into the heart of napa valley look at this right north and east of saint helene a Evacuation Orders this goes up into the angland area in the mountains, heres a one right here just to the east of the napa valley calistoga all of this north of calistoga leading up into lake county. All along highway 29 which has up toward middletown and upper lake all of this is now. An evacuation area to the east of highway 29, so you see the napa valley greatly affected of course all of Lake Berryessa heres the lake right here everything around Lake Berryessa is under an evacuation. Order right now then we move over to the other part of this complex fire into Solano County and check out how things look in vacaville, we saw early on in this fire. The fire jumped interstate 80 down in this area right now theres still an Evacuation Order north and west of interstate 80 the whole west side just outside the city. Vacaville under mandatory Evacuation Orders so even though these fires may be burning mostly in remote areas. Theyre burning right next to heavily populated locations. Heres see czu complex fire in the santa cruz and san mateo mountains, this is a little difficult way to navigate this maps have to candid does turkey jerky jumping in but this is a city of santa cruz. All of this right here just west of the city of santa cruz on highway one heading up the coast to davenport. Right back by a ano nuevo state park all the way up to san gregorio all of this area thats a lot of country all this area of the Santa Cruz Mountains under mandatory Evacuation Order and then were just talking about the largest fire in terms of acreage is the fire burning the scu fire in Santa Clara County. And look how close it is to the communities, the heavily Populated Areas that tuition warning right here on the east side of san jose this is alum rock and these are the Hamilton Road that heads up toward Lick Observatory then youre getting up to the edge of milpitas and fremont you close to evacuation areas there just south of livermore. Evacuation warning to be aware that you might have to leave that area as well so even though for the most part. These lightning sparked fires are burning in more remote locations. And there are some isolated homes and ranches vacation homes and a lot of these areas around the bay area. They are getting right up to the edges and have been next a very heavily heavily Populated Areas. So there you go just e. Thank you so much ken wayne. And our coverage continues on kron 4 dot com. And coming up the Milwaukee Bucks boycott their playoff game tonight over the shooting of jacob lake in wisconsin there is a lot of big news in the sports world tonight, first nba teams and now the San Francisco giants are boycotting tonights games in reaction to the shooting of jacob lake in wisconsin sports director jason dumas is here with the very latest jason, this is a historic day in the world of sports. And certainly as justine 4 years ago today, Colin Kaepernick sat on the bench for the National Anthem during a preseason game against the packers. It was a very start of his peaceful protests against Police Brutality and systemic racism and today for the first time in nba history, a team has boycotted a playoff game which has led to a nationwide boycott that includes the San Francisco giants. The giants. A night after having a meeting on the field to not play tonights game versus the dodgers. The team came out the stretch then after meeting both teams left the field soon afterwards, the Milwaukee Brewers were the First Major League team to decide to boycott their game tonight followed by the Seattle MarinersSan Diego Padres then the giants as will play their game in texas shortstop Marcus Semien however, and chris davis, the only 2 players of color only 2 black players i should say in that starting lineup will not be playing tonight. Were tonight walkie books like i said earlier led this boycott that sparked a nationwide protest. They were supposed to take on the Orlando Magic in game 5 of their openinground series. But the bucks refused to come out of the locker room. The bucs management and Front Office Staff was not aware that the players had planned on boycotting neither did the Orlando Magic. The nba stepped in and postponed the rest of the evenings playoff games which included the Oklahoma City thunder taking on the Houston Rockets and the portland trail blazers taking on the los angeles lakers. After hours in the lack after hours in that locker room, the bucks players emerged, and read a statement as a teen. With the last few days in our home state of wisconsin weve seen her in this video taken place being shot in the back 7 times by Police Officers and promotions. The additional shootings protesters despite overwhelming plea for change there has been no action. Our focus today can not the best. We take the court rivers in milwaukee, wisconsin. We are expected to played high level. You max each other counties. We hold ourselves to that standard in this moment, we are demanding the same from lawmakers and law enforcers. Were calling for justice for david blaine and demand all be held accountable. And just to mention that was sterling brown for the Milwaukee Bucks who is talking he actually has a lawsuit with the milwaukee pd as we stand as he was assaulted by Milwaukie Police officer a few years back thats all i have for you right now justine back to you. Thank you so much jason of the shooting of jacob blake has sparked protests across the country and those protests turn violent in kenosha wisconsin tonight while the very latest on this developing story thats coming up at 5. 45. And well turn back now to our wildfire coverage because cal fire continues to make progress on the wildfires burning across the bay area. The lnu lightning complex fires in the north bay are now 33 contained. The scu lightning complex fires in parts of the east and south bays are now 20 contained and the czu august lightning complex fires burning in san mateo and santa cruz counties are also 19 contained. Cal fire says that cooler weather and extra resources coming in from outside of the bay area helped crews gain the upper hand on the fires have more details on these developments were joined now by Daniel Berlant the assistant Deputy Director with cal fire. Daniel thank you so much for joining us here tonight on kron 4 news. Welcome. So what is the plan overnight to continue to gain ground on containment. Well were going continue to work 24 hours a day as you mentioned building a containment line we have hand crews bulldozer fire engines and all of them have continued making Good Progress as you reported our containment numbers are up and were going continue to see that way we get brought in the National Guard over the last several days in fact a number of the guards troops are already now on the ground between the National Guard helicopters and National Crew members we have a increase in the number of firefighters that we have on the front lines in fact as of today there are over 15,000 firefighters battling all of these fires in those crews from the National Guard firefighters from out of state and all the local city fire departments, cal fire for service. A lot of resources at scene. How are the crews doing i mean were weekend to these historically large fires how can they keep going. Well it is not just a little over a week now of these fires but many of our firefighters have been on the front well before these fires ignited we have a series of major fires down in Southern California just prior to this fire siege and so for many of our firefighters they have been on the front lines for weeks now at a time we are working to bring in reinforcements to allow them the 507 on the front lines now for several days straight, especially those initial tak cruise giving them an opportunity to get some rest because this is not a me this is not a sprint. This is a marathon and so we need to make sure firefighters not only can continue spend the time and energy to work on that a man on these fires but we saw plenty of fire season ahead of us. That is so true now do you see any more evacuations being expanded or theyre going to start to be pulled back so people can go back and see you know whats going on with their homes in the last several days weve continued to see our evacuation under Evacuation Orders being lifted in many sign of as progress is made but today we are working with the Sheriffs Department is fire activity specifically in the yolo and Colusa County areas this is on the eastern edge of the lnu the hennessy fire specifically as fire activity has picked up there and move closer to the community of ramsey additional evacuations this afternoon. Under way so it just goes to show you that yes were making progress on a number of fronts. Many people are allowed to to return but these fires are far from over. Far from over and far from even the really beginning of fire season. We hope that containment continues to grow and that your crew stay safe. Thank you daniel. And stay well go to the south bay now in the Santa Clara County board of supervisors unanimously approved another Eviction Moratorium extension that will last now until at least november 30th. Currently there is a statewide moratorium thats set to expire on september 30th but county leaders anticipate that will also be extinded. A recent study by the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley found that more than 43,000 rental units or at risk of eviction because of
