Wildfires burning across the state and across the bay area 2 of those making history the lnu complex in the north bay is now the second largest fire on record in the state of california burning about 350,000 acres. Its followed closely by the scu fire complex in the easton south bays and beyond that is burned 347,000 acres and then theres the czu complex in san mateo and santa cruz counties all together. These fires have burned about 800,000 acres in just one week. And we want to take a look now at the evacuation map for this fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains you can see this area in red just how large the mandatory Evacuation Order is southern San Mateo County northern Santa Cruz County and kron fours dan kerman has been tracking this complex for about a week now joins us live from the Cal Fire Base Camp in Scotts Valley boyd and this fire is not nearly as big as the other complexes, but that doesnt mean it hasnt been completely devastating. Absolutely you know nearly 200 homes have thousands and thousands of people have been evacuated not just for a couple of days. But for up to a week we can show you some video. Of what were looking at he spoke with some of the evacuees today and they have told us they thought they might be out for a couple of not the case and it back to. We talked to the former fire chief in Boulder Creek who says that he thinks people will be out at least another week. He says some people are trying to get back into their homes. He is pleading with them not to do that. He wants them to stay out of harms way and also let the firefighters do their work. Bonny doon was one area of concern today, the firefighters did make a lot of progress last night putting in a lot of dozer line on the north part of this fire. And theyre trying to hook that up to the eastern part of this fire today trying to contain that line about 13 containment was what we were told this morning. Theyre hoping for more this is what they had hoped to get done by the end of the day. Were able to put in strong line on the northern portion of the fire would dozers and have mine. Now the are trying to complain hopefully by today the eastern portion which runs alongside highway 35 which is skyline boulevard. Their time that into mine and those in line on the near side of the fire. The activity that were seeing right now is going to be in bonny doon area which is an area that were trying to focus on along the highway 9 corridor. So we have firefighters in right now trying to take the homes in that prep the homes in does happen. Thousands of people remain evacuated nearly 200 residences had burned down the fire only 13 contained were expecting an update coming in about a half hour to let you know how this fire which is burning in northern Santa Cruz County in southern San Mateo County. What kind of progress theyve made today thats the latest reporting live in Scotts Valley. Dan kerman kron 4 news. Thank you dan want to check in now with meteorologist Mabrisa Rodriguez for more on current temperatures and what firefighters are up against tonight and throughout the next couple brace a hater great yeah lets take a look at Current Conditions right now with that czu lightning complex fire fortunately, wind speeds in the single digits. But gusts upwards in the teens so great news right there 71 degrees with relative humidity up to 66 . So tracking a lot more moisture out there and also noticing air quality still pretty poor right now in the bay area for those of you in the east bay extending southward into san jose right now this evening, but some are proven along the coast and along the bay but still at moderate unhealthy levels there and tomorrow much of the same unhealthy for most of the bay area but the east bay youre going to see the poorest amount of air quality and that is why we have the spare the air alert in effect from now through wednesday tracking cooler and cloudier weather in the days ahead starting tomorrow more coming up in my micro Climate Outlook in a few minutes grant back to you thank of recent the California Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence for Scott Peterson the prosecutors may try again for the same sentence. The state Supreme Court upholding petersons 2004 murder conviction in the killing of his pregnant wife lacey but in the new ruling judges say there were a series of errors during jury selection in petersons trial and the potential jurors were improperly dismissed because they disagreed with the Death Penalty kron 4 Sanaz Tahernia spoke with criminal defense attorney paula canny about what this all means for petersons appeal case. Well, its up to the status last County District attorneys offices to what they want to do i mean interestingly enough the only prosecutor for that county is now the elected District Attorney in that county so that proverbial ball is in their court again the conviction was upheld what was not upheld was the penalty that is the Death Penalty was reversed because the court ruled and its a 109 page opinion or really long opinion. But it said that there was a mistake as it relates to jury selection and so you know in in Death Penalty cases, jurors fill out question years and at least 13 jurors were simply excuse because they said they have a general opposition to the Death Penalty and there is a case witherspoon the illinois where the United States Supreme Court said you absolutely cannot do that a sentence of death cannot be carried out of the jury that imposed or recommended it was chosen by excluding jury people are veneer men for cause simply because they voiced general objections to the Death Penalty or expressed conscientious or religious scruples against its inflection and so the court said that that was a fundamental flaw has to process. And so because the jury Selection Process was so fundamentally flawed the penalty has to be reversed. So stan a sauce county cant do nothing and that means that Scott Petersons penalty will be life without the possibility of parole financially that probably makes the most sense for the county and furthermore given that theres currently a moratorium in effect in the state of california by the governors. The statement that there will be no Death Penalty there will be no execution so long as he is you know the governor of the state of california. And that was paula canny and our son os to hernia that interview first ran on our 24 hour streaming service. Kron on it is available in the app store and the pay wall has been dropped you can get info for free during the pandemic. National news now the National Guard is being called to wisconsin. Live thank you john for being with us. How. I dangerous for lack of a better word is this even if its not maybe intense for our lungs. Its not good for loans is. So for example has moved. An asthmatic individual can easily have an exacerbation with this kind of. Particulate pollution from the wild or smoke. But were used to in the bay area past 5 years or so certainly last year we dealt with smoke for many quite frankly so is the concern here that this keeps happening and maybe its happening starting earlier in the year here we are in august where usually you think maybe october is when the wildfire season has worsened you might have to and youre a few days of of thick smoke is their big picture concern here. Yes, there is a big picture of concern for a couple reasons. One weve had a drought as we all know. So that wildfires more prone to happen. And thats why we have all these fires after the lightning is close storms of last weekend which of course was a freak storm. Probably just the heat and drought a consequence of climate change. And then its in the midst of the covid pandemic its quite likely that particulate pollution can. Increase the risk of moving from milder covid19 to more severe disease. Thats what were concerned about and the longer we have bad air the more likely that is to occur. So many concerns parents are concerned about their sanity and their kids who are you know you cant really go anywhere inside like a mall or a museum these days because of covid and now its dangerous to let your kids go out and run in a field, what is your best advice to parents who might want to you know throw a little and 95 mask on their kids and try to let their kids go outside for at least a little bit during the day. Well its a very complicated first of all and 95 has already been made for kids so many older children. Can wear a small adult and 95 course, and 95 sock that readily available to the public because theyre being used for Health Care Workers outdoor workers emergency the best thing to do which is tough. Because im going insane a little bit from too much the committee zoom calls indoors is you should stay sheltered in place in your house with windows closed if possible which is bad on a hot with your central ventilation system one recirculate hopefully with a merv 13 soldier it better which will sell throughout the particulates and then home. Air cleaners with happen soldiers are very effective still clean a room i bought one.
