The workweek more than 14,000 firefighters are battling more than 2 dozen major fires across california and tonight word of another death th of a 70 yearold man has been discovered in Santa Cruz County good evening. Everybody, im pam moore and im ken wayne thanks for joining us tonight for kron 4 news at 8 oclock tonight were monitoring 3 lightning complex fires across the bay area. Heres the latest information on each the largest one burning acl and you complex fires. Those fires spanned napa a Sonoma Solano and lake counties. Tonights theyve grown to more than 347,000 acres and theyre at 21 containment. The s c you lightning complex fires are burning in alameda contra costa and santa clara counties. Theyve expanded to 343,000 acres and or 10 cothe czu august lightning complex fires are burning in san mateo and santa cruz counties. Theyve gwn to 74,000 acres and are at 8 containment. And the last time that we have this event which was last weekend. There are some significant wind gusts that were recorded with those storms. Our concern is that now that we have a large fire on the ground. What are those wind gusts going to do to the fire and that nging t taking a live look outside the upper part of San Francisco you can see a strange looking sky with a marine layer out there Stormy Weather could spark some new fires and fan existing flames, a red flag warning is currently in effect. We start off this with a ief rnow with details and what we can expect warrants. Yeah can i think saw couple of drops there on the lens to and thats because all the subtropical moisture working it bay area look at this you can see coming up this the remnants of genevieve is young man was speaking d there goes making its way into california of course not hurricane strength, but it doesnt matter weve got fires out there weve got the potential for more Lightning Strikes in you can see within this last uwas another strike just off the coastline. There a big sur and that moisture is sweeping up in toward the bay area all of that will continue to track in our direction over the next few hours in fact throughout the night tonight it is going to be on and off well see several bands of moisture come through with the potential to bring with it the threat of some Lightning Strikes right now that rain though is coming down weve had reports of some rain drops actually hit the ground not a bunch of a boy well take anything we can get as long as its just rain not seeing any Lightning Strikes right now around the bay area. But the potential that that could change showers though into San Francisco right now stretching across into oakland, some of those big subtropical raindrops possibly coming down through some very dry air now red flag warnings have been posted across the enti bay area until 5 oclock tomorrow evening. Thats when we expect things hopefully, the least settled down by them, but certainly the potential for some firesutthere and thats very dangerous with the fires already burning all right, lets time this out for you tonight as we head through the night to see these bands begin to move through just after 9 oclock you see a pretty significant cell that could very well be a thunder storm headed toward conquered maybe along the peninsula as well as we go through the night these waves of moisture keep coming through maybe more thunderstorms toward midnight and after that i think as we get into early tomorrow morningthings begin to subside a little bit but we may not be done there. We could see some more storms on the way well talk about that more coming of the forecast a few minutes. Thank you lawrence, another set of fires from monitoring again the czu lightning complex you can see a map of where those fires are located that red dotted line shows the burn area. They are burning in the rugged the terrain of the mountains in san mateo Santa Cruz County was counties which makes fighting these flames of course f a challenge. Flames from this complex fire burned more than 74,000 acres and as we mentioned containment is at about 8 to First Responders have been injured one man has died. Our Team Coverage continues with kron fours gayle ong shes live for us from Scotts Valley in the Santa Cruz Mountains and has more gayle. And heartbreaking news that 70 yearold man was found in the area of the last chance rhoda Officials Say they have to have a heloc they had to use a helicopter for recovery and officials are also looking into 3 missing persons cases in this fire. We want to show you just said to rain Fire Fighters are dealing with that video is burning in a dense forest, heavy timber undergrowth this is a fire activity from today around us some time this afternoon where the fire was actually burning on the hillside and it made its way down the slope along highway 9 near riverdale boulevard theres also homes in that area. So firefighters have that area contained and theyre able to they had a really good day with weather and so theyre able to save the homes. Thats where that fire is burning very cle to just to give you an idea a lot of narrow roads around the small towns and that is what the shah santa clara, im sorry san santa cruz the sheriffs deputies who they say that they found that man in an impassable road and heres what they had to say about the fire victim. Or and firefighters tonight are following the weather patterns while they had a good day to day of course that could change with a expected of thunder that may start. That may cause lightning and may start more fires so they have crews station throughout the field ready to put fires out live in scott valley, gayle ong kron 4 news scale. Thank you here is an evacuation map for those living in san mateo and santa cruz counties will get to that. In just a little it is right there the red area is the mandaation order you can see this is a good chunk of the southernend of San Mateo County the north side of. The santa cruz ue coast there area is an evacuation warning that is in effect. Our wildfire coverage continues. We want to get the latest information on the fires burning around the bay area we want to check in now with Heather Williams spokeswoman for. Cal fire heather, lets start with the positive progress has been made on containment when we talk to you about 24 hours ago. The container was between 5. 15 , but its more than that now so tell us said the good news on how the containment is going. Yeah, i might even ing update on the ellen new lightning complex in the match up a marriage 21 for that though has been a 4 increase in get a id that warning which is great progress as we go into the you know dry threats and the winds. Heather also of course the sad news of the discovery of a body in the czu fire can you just give us an update on the numbers of those injured dead and missing based on the information you. So we do have been if we have the new of the county which is very unfortunate at 68 hallett e. You know the plot by just a stark reminder of how deadly law provided just tragic ny crash. And about the missing people what do you know about that is that just people who have not been able to connect with others during the evacuation process or are these people fear theres a fear that they could be in danger. I dont have any information on that specifically but if you have any way that our concerns definitely judge the sheriff thought that they will be able to help you. With you l night we are of course talking about the fact that manpower is stretched so thin in the state you said that more resources were heading our way did any more resources into the bay area today. Well weve got about firefightme on and weve been able to increase numbers slowly and steadily. Over about a firefighter that each of the different incidents about the day that a good number that staggering it. We have 2,400 indians in california right w on the is just historic in my mind i ive never seen it this high before. Is that pretty ch every available resource that you have a in this part of california because we also have fires burning in Southern California too. We do and we we know those resources were committed at previous to the event that they are still trying to increase containment there and adding can we agree to the Northern California fire and try to you know help head off what we expect tonight could be very impactful. Currently have about 96 that argue that it could 12 or so we doing everything that we can and fighting fires a graphically at the cannes heather. I hope this isnt a dumb question. But nonetheless in light of the Weather Forecast for tonight in the next few days how. Does calfire prepare for possible Lightning Strikes. So we even the cleat you know preposition our resources where we anticipate that theyre ing to be lightning stke. Now that we already have some of the other 5 on. Any new fire going to you know its an extra challenge for us right now so we definitely are hoping for the best night. But we are you know preparing for any new Lightning Strike that we will be to respond to any new fires by specially with the win. Expected to increase overnight. I would guess of that could be even more problematic at cause typically you dont fly your aircraft at night because of the dangers of the darkness and the mountain terrain. So that wou crews would have to try to make their way through some pretty a tough country out there so is thasue that youre tonight. Yeah definitely be fired. You know i started in have been burning in very steep and rugged terrain so you know that heavy field and a lot of the area being inaccessible have been a challenge. Know aircraft can fly in and up definitely a firefighter live at the l low the fire personnel can get in you know the it challenges ght were facing here too is were not seeing that overnight recovery that does help. I get no more control during the evening and at night hours. So you mentioned that the l a new fire containment is now up to is that what youre making the most progress in the bay area tonight, how are the other fires containment numbers going. So he be you know the funny critics about 10,000 acres burning that came in it up 3 on that fire. So you know going from 5 to 8. You know, thats a good start, you know every every person we go up if ykin our mind that we delicate block all, but we were excited because numbers youre fired the contain thing though you know the fire ng me of the western by that of fi their Northern Region tuna fire activity, good. Subside a little bit but a lot of fires have merged together so you know theyre going to continue to check resources around of these incidences at area flare up and they need to address. You know protecting people and property and our Natural Resources there, i know the firefighters are tired and 2448 hours without. Many long rest hows Everybody Holding up and im seeing a lot on social media people want to help by donating food or or water or Something Like that tell us how they are the firefighters are doing an. If theres anything people can do to help. Yeah its wonderful when people want to help and i definitely have might get there but. Our purpose is now working around the clock and you know it unfortunately that our first time you know dealing with extreme wildfire conditions. You know we have 2017 2018 at most recent so. You know a lot of guys have been on the line that he firefighters on the line for you know several days and so you know again as we continue francis reports it will be able to get that if people want to help you dont. We take really good care much. Our firefighters have you know food and water and things of that nature. The concern we always have it the community for impacting so remote that you can do and helped free a you know. The mind the firefighters but they know that people home and you know are being threatened it. You know for the back shun centers and those people that have been pushed out of their Community Reaching out to the red cross. Cal bond here at all though you know 8 well take anybody help right now, you know we eat to come together. Heather willwe iams. Certainly appreciate your information tonight and we are keeping all of cal fire and the volunteers who are supporting those who acuated as crews in our hearts. Thank you so much for your update tonight, Heather Williams. This is a story lot of people have been paying attention to around the bay area californias oldest state park has by the wildfires. The latest reports say the fire is right now burning on in the area of henry coe state park we saw cars that were rushing up to and also coming back from their homes that are in the areas of jackson oaks holiday lake estates and along thomas grade cars and trucks were loaded up with anything that people could grab an Evacuation Order was issued for this area. But today it was upgraded to an Evacuation Order right now the fear is a change in weather patting pattern which is that including one in which could help spread this fire or send embers into these neighborhoods areas most of these homes are in hilly rural terrain, firefighters are right now fighting the fire just east of the these areas at 5 oclock today police were forced to close down the road along eastbound avenue just up from hill road and they were turning people away from going up because of any potential danger many of these clearly on edge tonight, not knowing if after they leave they will return to find their home has been destroyed. Have won the press rounds. We want to make sure its quarterly kind of tactic. We are facing try to pack up all the pictures and stuff like that. Weve got to get going up there now it comes with the territory where we live and its unfortunate. You know i think we made all the right decisions in terms of being ready in terms of what we packed. Tonight police have continued to block residents from going back up into these areas not only for their safety the probe but prevent other people from going up in there to steal dry. Lightning has also been a major concern fire officials and also city officials here in morgan hill considering that is what essentially started all of these complex fires in the first place for people that are looking for information theyre encouraged go to and soprano high school there they will find some resources and also possibly some to stay if that is needed ken and pam. Signs of support for First Responders thank you police fire and pg and e you see Santa Cruz Police posting these images on twitter today thanking brooke and malia for hanging the sides stay with more wild want to check our weather some sprinkles already coming down in some sections of the bay area tonight, this is a live look from our sutro camera this is facing south toward as and the San Bruno Mountain you can see that layer of what is likely smoke we wish it was fog but likely smoke. Thats hovering over the area were at fog. It certainly would help cool things down there looks like maybe its a combination of both more than 2 dozen major wildfires burning across california causing. Dangerous conditions us you [ dont have to be in the fire area to feel the effects of the smoke from or what you can expect over the next few days. My che chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow lawrence you as we watch the wind switched directions today and that instead of a n we start to see southwesterly so all of a sudden some that smoke from the fires moving back in along you and was mixing with some of that fog. And the smoke outside you can see some of that right now above that were seen tropical moisture. So theres a lot in t quality boy it is really bad in some parts of the bay area a little more righnow some own tri valley out there boy it is really bad that air just kind of hovering in that smoke just sitting in there very thick smoke, if youre sensitive to any of these issues with smoke make sure you close those windo not as ba the San Francisco right now and also parts of half moon bay, but otherwise pretty doesnt look like its going to prove that much the overnight tonight. The spare the is extended now all the way until wednesday as the air quality not going to prove very sell things down and tonight could be a very active night. We just a Lightning Strike there off the coastline of big sur. This is going to be sweeping up in toward the bay area here in the next few hours well see that on and off we head through the night tonight so scattered showers out there right now most just light stuff coming down. But some of the big some tropical rain drops the pitter patter ing on your roof rig bay areas it moves on through you can see right there as a sliding a little further toward the north now making its way up toward richmond parts of oakland and then the mill valley, but overnight tonight, lets time this out for you casee the clouds will roll on through you see these pockets of storms roll on by and this is where it gets a little scary thats potentially our models picking up on some thunderstorm activity also along the peninsula that rotates on and off throughout the night tonight into early tomorrow morning before things begin to settle down. Were monitoring 3 lightning complex fires across the bay area, heres the latest information on each. The Largest Group of fires burning are the lnu complex fires, those banned Napa Sonoma Solano and lake counties tonight theyve grown to more than 347,000 acres there at 21 containment thats a up from last night. The scu lightning complex fires are in alameda contra costa and santa clara counties. Theyve expanded to 339,000 acres there up to 10 containment. And the czu august lightning complex fires are burning in san mateo and santa cruz counties. They have grown to 74,000 acres and are at 8 containment to the l complex lighting fires burning in the north bay as weve been telling you and you can see on your screen. The areas in napa sonoma and solano and lake counties which have been affected this complex fire has been the deadliest and most destructive. At least 4 people have died and 4 others injured 871 structures destroyed 234 others damaged flames have scorched more than 347,000 acres and this can mention containment is now up to 21 . Our live Team Coverage continues with kron fours noelle bellow who is live at the Sonoma County airport noel. Thats right ken and pam like you said the lnu a fire that containment has grown, however what crews are really concerned about tonight is that threat of potential dry lightning coming through and i will say this is maya is ive been out here several nights and the wind has definitely picked up tonight more than it has any of the other nights like you said about the Sonoma County airport technically at the Cal Fire Sonoma Air Attack base. Im not sure you can see behind me but one of the air crafts that the cal fire is using to fight this fire from above theyve all park just about an hour ago they are grounded for the evening and will likely pick back up tomorrow in hopes that theres drastic weather issues that they would have to deal with now. The resources we were told earlier today for our air attack crews are pretty stretched pretty thin as they tried to keep attacking this fire fre air i spoke with one of the cal fire. Crews today and they said that basically one of their air aircraft got fogged in earlier they had to kind of call it quits a little bit earlier than they would have expected today now when it comes to the lnu there are fire crews from across the count some from oregon. We have some from washington and then of course across the state i saw some Orange County fire crews out earlier today. And basically with the threat of more dry lightning theres a threat of those new fires potentially popping up all across the area tonight here in Northern California fire says they do have a plan for if and when those Lightning Strikes happen and potentially start up another fire and theyre hoping that folks who live in these areas have a plan for themselves as well really pushing to make sure they have go bags and one not when it comes to evacuations, i was at the Evacuation Center in santa rosa earlier and i spoke with one man who evacuated earlier today, he said he ran away from the smoke. Reserves i think would be the right word. Because i dont know how many of my friends are made it out. And how many stayed behind this honor reserved for a member moment. I want to go motion bankrupt on me so it reserved. Most people that i talked to today just kind of said you know its material stuff that i had to leave behind i have myself i have my daughter or my dog and that is okay for me for now many of these people of course is not new evacuating a for fires like this one woman i spoke to that youll hear from later she lost everything in the tubbs fire. So shes just tend to come back to something this time around again, the main concern tonight is the potential for that dry lightning and the crews here at the air attack base are hoping that theyll be able to get up some time tomorrow morning and continue to attack the lnu lightning complex fires for now in Sonoma County noelle bellow kron 4 news and the folks in Sonoma County know all about fires. Thank you know well to the east bay and the south bay you can see on your screen where the. Su lightning complex fires are burning in alameda contra costa and santa clara counties, n parts of san joaquin county. Ince from those fires have burned more than 343,000 acres is that 10 containment tonight to First Responders to others have been hurt well structures have been destroyed and more than 20,000 others are still threatened at this hour our live Team Coverage continues now is kron fours dan thorn is covering the scu complex fires and he joins us now live from. Morgan hill dan. Well ken and pam weve seen some cars moving up and down here along easton avenue. The road is actually blocked off here from hill road and thats leading up in those communities people are have been forced to evacuate here thousands of people because of the fire that is burning east of here near henry coe state park. We saw lots of cars that were not only going up into these communities, but also leaving from these communities this is jackson oaks this is on Holiday Lakes estates, this is some other areas that are surrounding there where a fire could be threatening this is along the thomas people trying to grab anything that they they can tonight be a back yushin warning thats been going on here for the last day or so i was actually upgraded today to an Evacuation Order. The fear right now is that theres a changing weather pattern which could bring with it some when maybe even some Lightning Strikes which would help this fire spread create other fires or send embers into these neighborhood areas a lot of these homes that are here are in very hilly rural terrain firefighters right now as i mentioned are just fighting the fire east of here at 5 oclock today police were forced to close the road along easton avenue and they have been turning people away from going up because of any potential danger many evacuee back you ease rather clearly on edge tonight because theyre not sure that if they come back their home will still be standing. Were living in california. You know experiencing wildfires is certainly a obviously up where we live. Theyre in the hills with a lot of different areas that are under the same exact stress. We encourage everybody to be prepared stay safe and b be on the lookout and yourself and for good solid getting in and getting out of some of these areas can be difficult so thats the reason why they wanted to issue these Evacuation Orders early so that people can get out in an orderly fashion as opposed to all frantically trying to rush out or go up all at once on police are right now keeping people away from these areas there have been a few escorts, it maybe some elderly people that are still trying to get some things or at least get back out of these areas but for the most part people will not be allowed up here on not only for their safety but also to keep people from things. Dry lightning as i mentioned earlier has also been a big concern out here we havent anything in terms of a vein different weather in this area right now but the situation could change as we head into the next few for any evacuees that are looking for information or any resources theyre being encouraged to go to and so high school there you will find some supplies and also maybe even a place to stay if you dont have anywhere else to go ken and pam. Dan thank you very much want to show you more images from the bay area wildfires fire in this fighting from the air this is healdsburg you can see a helicopter looks like a black hawk helicopter dropping into a pond of some kind of pick up some water. Sickening that is what cal fire is saying about the crime against one of its own. A thief broke into a fire commanders Department Vehicle and then stole his wallet and drained his bank account. Kron fours Justine Waldman has new details on this story for us tonight, shes live in our newsroom just a well pam this happened to a santa cruz fire ground commander who is battling the czu lightning complex fires. His car was that they do fire station and perry empire grade in Santa Cruz County and while that firefighter was out trying to save lives and homes. Somebodys got inside of his Department Vehicle and stole his wallet and then wiped out his bank account purchases were made on at least one of the Firefighters Credit cards. And its unfortunate sickening one of our our ground commanders in that area. While out taking care of business and directing a firefighting crews. Somebody entered his vehicle his apartment vehicle and stole person vehicles include his wallet. And rain as they could tell so thats the extent that these people done again this is why we have asked. For people to evacuate the Sheriffs Department has done a fantastic job in trying to derail this but again. This is what we have as a its saddening its sickening were doing everything we can to try to to help the community. Now get this cal fire is also warning about a fake go fund me account thats circulating to raise money for that firefighter, but again that go fund me account is fake. Its not associated with cal fire or anyone connected to the department. The Santa Cruz CountySheriffs Department has detectives they tell me working on this case looking for Surveillance Video and any other evidence that could lead to identifying the suspect. Theyre also working with the bank to get to the bottom of this but really disgusting that someone would steal allegedly from a firefighter out there trying to save lives. During this crisis. Theyre morgan city along the coastline and then behind that kind of a 1, 2 punch all of a sudden laura enters the gulf and becomes possibly category one maybe a category 2 hard to say sometimes the storm systems out ahead of it leslie churn up the water enough to bring some cooler water up from the depths and that will weaken the storm system right now the models only as possibly a category 2 a 1, 2 punch, louisiana little bit later on this week guys back to you.
