Well on the National Front most students will be learning online for at least part of the fall semester, the ongoing pandemic forcing a lot of schools shut their doors in some cases just days after theyve reopened John Lawrence takes a closer look. The university of North Carolina at chapel hill is hitting the brakes on in person classes for undergraduates moving online starting wednesday dialing and then last friday this decision comes after a rash of covid19 cases are confirmed on campus. I think the right move from the university initially was to not open at all because back in july the chancellor sent out an email saying the numbers werent where they wanted them to be more than 1600 miles away over 150 students at Colorado College or in quarantine due to possible exposure. The only thing that i think we dont know is at what point these this cool start to shut down again. The virus is still spreading i mean this is not the time to open up, i mean and i ended up they sound like a crazy person saying that or not but that that is the truth the number of known covid19 cases in the u. S. Doubles roughly every 2 months, according to Johns Hopkins university and Health Experts say the country needs to be proactive clearly we need new testing we need to be able to scale up testing so that everyone. Who needs testing who wants testing can get it schools and colleges can use testing as part of their strategy of 95 the country just simply wore masks at this point. It would start to bend the curve downward and save 10s of thousands of lives. Im John Lawrence reporting. Well a new state report says the california prisons are at fault for por coronavirus screenings. Inspector general says checks of employees and visitors were inconsistent at best which may have increased the spread. The report doesnt link the poor practices to the states worst outbreak at san quentin that resulted from a botched transfer of infected patients or infected inmates. But it does criticize the Corrections Department for vague rules and inadequately trained staff. Los angeles county is continuing to show progress in the fight to curb the spread of covid19 Health Officials there say the number of hospitalizations has actually dropped nearly 40 from mid july to mid august. They say coronavirus testing numbers in la county exceed the states threshold of performing more than a 150 daily tests per 100,000 people. On monday the county reported at least a 181 tests performed each day for every 100,000 residents. A legal battle may be brewing for the Trump Administration and the u. S. Postal service, a number of states attorneys generals are now in considering a lawsuit against the Postal Service where washington correspondent joe khaleel with the story. Dismantling mailsorting machines. Theyre telling post appears they cannot work overtime they cannot take an extra trip they have to leave mail behind North Carolinas attorney general josh stein and other attorneys general are concerned those changes are designed to slow the male in the runup to the election what we cannot have is north carolinians who are eligible to vote was vote to comply with the law not have their vote counted. Sign says the changes may be politically motivated recently appointed postmaster general louis dejoy was a big supporter of President Trumps 2016 campaign is national has some skepticism president expressly said he doesnt want to encourage mail in voting. President trump said his aim is to improve the Postal Service i have encouraged everybody. Up to now not love about President Trump said structural changes to the Postal Service are necessary to address budget shortfalls that go back years before his presidency i also want to have a post office. Without losing in the billions of dollars a year within a run it well and were going to not lose so much money and white house chief of staff mark meadows said sunday, some of the changes were approved before dejoy came into his role the president of the United States is not going to interfere with anybody casting their their vote in a legitimate way House Speaker nancy pelosi is calling all us house members back to washington interrupting their august recess to vote on a bill that would provide an extra 25 billion dollars to the Postal Service an outlaw any Service Changes until after the pandemic because of their salt on the postal system. That being the choice people have to make between their health and their vote. Come election if they can vote by mail they want to bail out of federal agency york was a federal agency. So that they can mail ballots, not republican congressman larry bush on from indiana says democrats are overreacting especially on their funding plans. Theres no reason why the Postal Service. Cant deliver. Mail in balloting right now without an extra 25 billion dollars in washington. Im joe khaleel. For 38 is the time meanwhile postmaster general louis dejoy has agreed to testify before house lawmakers next monday, the Oversight Committee chairwoman says that dejoy will face her committee which is looking into the changes that hes been pushing there at the usps theyve already led to slower mail deliveries. The joys Administration Says it would not necessarily handle mail in ballots as Priority Mail anymore. Democrats accuse him of doing President Trumps bidding and efforts to suppress the vote. Theyre also pushing him to reserve or i should say reverse the changes but the choices hes only trying to restructure the financially troubled agency. So the raiders are going to kick off their season on the road will be facing the Carolina Panthers on september 13th. Students have to learn from home because of the pandemic of course but Distance Learning is also having a strong impact on children with special needs with Mandy Gaither with that story. Its easier said than done but structure during this pandemic is important for everyone, especially children with special needs being thrown out of their routines has really brought everybody for a loop. Nicole hendricks is a psychologist with the childrens healthcare of atlanta is Marcus Autism Center from masks to social distancing. She says knowing what to expect when starting back to school can help you know it might seem silly to practice things whenever are not on track but that practice helps us get more familiar and then make that not much of the ship routine we actually have to do those out of luck. Finding a mask to match their interests and gradually working up to wearing at longer can also help children to get used to that says cheryl klayman also of Marcus Autism Center sometimes the facts can be is sometimes a very soft sometimes and ask a stupid sometimes its to take some time for new years forward. So it might take some mass trial and error to find something thats going to work and to parents everywhere. They say dont forget to give yourself some grace were not able to accomplish all the things that we want to accomplish and theyre going to continue to make progress and will continue to move forward. Its just its a hard time right now todays health minute. Im Mandy Gaither. Well a new study finds racial and ethnic disparities in covid19 hospitalizations across a dozen states. The study found black latino native american and alaska native people were disproportionately hospitalized for covid19 which means their percentage of hospitalizations was higher then their makeup of the state population. The study also found the percentage of hospitalizations of white patients was substantially less then their share of the population in all 12 states. Walgreens and cvs are putting in place special precautions for flu shots as they expect a big demand for them this season.
