Tonight we held a town hall here at kron 4 with several bay area city mayors to top Police Reform. And coronavirus coming up hear why a couple of big bay area cities are looking to add to their Police Forces as they work on those reforms. And weve got clouds rolling in right now not going along were going to talk about some sunshine and your 4th of july forecast dan motorcycle riders love the open road. And geico loves helping riders get to where theyre going, so to help even more, geico is giving new and current customers a fifteen percent credit on their motorcycle policies with the geico giveback. Earlier tonight we aired a live town hall with a number of mayors from across the bay area and one of the big subjects right now is Police Reform noelle bellow monitor that town hall and has more know out yeah we actually began in valais whoa where mayor bob some pie and says the city is actually looking to expand its Police Department but the mayor said. They are also actively working on reforms theyre following an independent review of its department take a listen. Our calls for service are very very high. So yes we do need to to increase our numbers so that we can provide the service that our residents are asking for. And do you feel mayor the city is going to tackle the kind of reforms people are asking for at the same time. Absolutely we are. We iarc to look at our Police Department. And as they have done for other departments. They of very detailed report as to what they found were were or are issues within the agency. We came up with 45 now that being said the department of justice is also the California Department of justice is also coming in to. Look at our department do an analysis of it and theyre going to use the oilrich or as art of what they are going to do in terms of of following through on the recommendations. Now oakland is also looking at hiring more police offi ers and their department as well mayor libby shaft joined us tonight saying she believes oakland needs to get to a total of 800 officers while it works to migrate Police Responsibilities she says theyve been working on reforms for the last year now and last night the City Council Approved moving forward with a reform plan that they call macro. Clint is i like to say we already have to some extent day funded the police in that we have the lowest officer per crimes staffing of any department in america and we have been investing in new policies practices as well as the strongest and most independent Citizen Police commission in the country but what excites everyone and i mean everyone including our Police Officers is standing up a new type of non Law Enforcement response says were looking to migrate responsibilities that police really shouldnt hold and that is by creating a mobile Community BasedResponse Unit with medics as well as Mental Health clinicians that can respond to the type of crises that really dont warrant a badge and a gun i am concerned that we do have to continue to respond to those 911 calls and a scathing grand jury report just came out saying that oakland is not doing a good enough job. So we want to create this new response format. Before we start to cut away staffing that has traditionally been used to respond to those 911 calls. Now that macro plan is expected to be in place by this fall in oakland, we also spoke with mayor london breed from San Francisco and san jose mayor sam liccardo about the Coronavirus Response you can find that town hall in full on our website kron 4 dot com. It includes steps to improve transparency and accountability in arbitration and disciplinary decisions. Independent investigations of alleged police books misconduct, a ban on rubber bullets and a review of use of force policy. The mayor says the plans reflect his commitment to reforming the Police Department without the funding it. I believe the overwhelming majority of our residents. Want us to continue funding the police because they want Police Officers to show up particularly in communities that are heavily him by crime. Our residents are overwhelmingly telling us we want more police. The action comes as protesters call to defund the Police Department amid outrage over Police Brutality across the country. There is now a call for Police Reform in antioch now this after the citys Police Union President posted a comment on facebook. I have condolences for the want the lies at the hands of the police. But what about the was this live in through the trauma. The brutalization from police is the protesters marched from antioch city park to city hall. Hoping to hear from the mayor for answers in leadership, we want the Police Department to be held accountable. And with recent events that have taken place it just makes me question the accountability from our Police Department we also reached out to the mayor for comment, but just like the protesters who we heard or from on wednesday. We have not heard back from him an antioch michelle kingston kron 4 news.
