Meanwhile earlier today, thousands of people in los angeles showed up at city hall there to protest the death of george floyd. Erin myers was there and talked to demonstrators. You know the demonstrators tried to shop around 8 oclock this morning they met over at grand park across from city hall here and you can see and we do have performances going on behind us some of the protesters did had to Staple Center some of them staying here now this is just one of many protests going on throughout los angeles it was very peaceful started at grand we saw many of the protesters with black lives matter signs and various others protesters chanted and wanted to have their voices heard this protest was set up by a group of friends just 1920 21 years old. Many couldnt make it to protest throughout the week so they wanted to get out here today and hundreds did show up. Police were here at city hall throughout and the National Guard was brought in, but they did not stay outside of city hall for the speak to many of the protesters in some organizers this morning saying it was something they knew they had to do it makes us feel empowered you know were all in this together and try to stand together you know it just shows us that we really want our voices heard this time because it seems like before like we speak up and then something happens and then a week later, you know the same thing is happening on from South Central is so theres a lot of people back home. You know they were upset at the fact that there were no protests organized by as you know, so i felt the need to take initiative and just give people something that they can feel its a part of home, you know. So its when its someone from home was more comfortable as more of an experience amazing our whole life is busy night told to be. Things you grow up in the certain neighborhoods way so not to watch out for you know sort of games also please let you know always watch out for certain areas because sometimes when i drive pies starting cause im thinking what do you think will be over when im do comedy. Medical professionals in Evansville Indiana gathered to combat what they say are racial injustices. They were at the 4 freedoms monument today, the white coats for black lives rally was a peaceful event when the speakers were finished they then march to the civic center where they had a 5 minute moment of silence in memory of george floyd one protesters says that statistics show more African Americans are also suffering due to medical we know medically that covid19 right now hugely is hitting the African American population. Theyre being affected in disproportionate numbers and actually thats a pattern that we see across all of medicine the black community has really suffered. There are protesters march down main street towards the civic center where as we mentioned it ended peacefully. We often hear the words black lives matter chanted protests in see the posts on social media asking readers to fight against the injustices black people face around the world, jesse pierre spoke to black leaders in fayetteville, arkansas. On the movement and its impact today. For the black lives Matter Movement is Still Movement that is necessary created in 2013 the black lives Matter Movement was formed after George Zimmerman was acquitted of the shooting and killing of Trayvon Martin an africanamerican man and after the death of george floyd while in police custody, the message is back. I life matters and we need you to understand that my managers not to the exclusion of your life reverend krissy wood with the historic saint James Missionary Church says for all lives to matter we need to focus on the lives that are at stake, see woods says hes encouraged to see people of all different backgrounds outraged by floyds death and standing in unity. The momentum just seems to be a a lot more tronger. Certainly hearing people be a lot more vocal. Then i never would have been from businesses to churches et cetera. So it does give me hope. File a protest in danville monday night ended up turning violent. One in fable tuesday brought thousands of people together and ended peacefully we have developed a very good a very effective relationship with the Fayetteville Police department and so we have constant dialogue as it relates to helping the Police Department or and helping them or assisting them in understanding. The importance of the black experience here in northwest, arkansas and throughout the country is important time. To listen and to be able to express the frustration and anger and the distrust is in so many as heart and so that we respect and will protect them. There is another protest scheduled for sunday night in ben hill in northwest, arkansas, im just a poor. Still to come a new policing reform bill could be on the way with the new legislation includes and House Democrats plan to introduce a policing reform bill on monday House Speaker nancy pelosi of San Francisco says it will come from the congressional black caucus. It seeks to address racial profiling excessive use of force and qualified immunity for Police Officers the bill also will try to improve trust between Police Departments and communities. The summary shows it contains anti lynching provisions and would create a National Police misconduct registry. Its protest all across the bay area today, including palo alto by protesters there say this Movement Impact everyone. And after the break we will speak with the person who shared this video with us. It is from the horrific scene in Santa Cruz Mountains today that has left one Santa Cruz County sheriffs deputy dead. Another injured and a chp officer injured after the sheriff, there says they were ambushed with guns and explosives. Well back to that breaking news we have been tracking tonight in santa sheriffs deputy has been killed another deputy has been injured. They say were ambushed chp officer has also been killed today is deputy damon got swell or. And youre looking at a photograph of him right now the Santa Cruz CountySheriffs Department says around one 30 they received a call about a suspicious van that was parked off the road near jamison creek. The caller said that they saw guns and bomb making materials inside that van it when deputies arrived on scene the van was seen leaving the area they tried to follow it and eventually found it at a home as deputies investigated. The sheriff says they were ambushed with gunfire. And multiple homemade bombs went off sergeant guts willard was shot and taken to the hospital where he died. The other deputy there with him was either shot or hit with shrapnel from the bombs and that other deputy was also hit by a car that the sheriff says the suspect took off and. Again that deputy is recovering at the hospital, but the suspects arrest was caught on video and tonight were speaking with the person who filmed it cleric of all thank you for joining us you live near this can you first described where this happened and how you happened to be there. Okay this happened in the city of bend moment, right off of highway 9 highway 9 is are oneway road. In the valley cameron of alley i look in Boulder Creek and was going in to the town of sell 10. There was a police blockade. And i wasnt sure exactly what was going on so i went ahead of my party may be a cool in a little shopping strip there. And walked up to him maybe 50 yards. Before the blockade and spoke to one of the neighbors of the standing outside asking him if he funny thing is the gentleman actually the increase lived in one of the cottages there and said that he earlier had seen somebody climb the fence. It was a young man. Any described him he said that he thought maybe possibly he was drunk. In that he did tell the officers about him i honestly dont think that officers had come to search the yard. And so i was standing there after about 15 minutes after speaking to press with somebody with all dot that you see in the video. I thin there is a gentleman with a white shirt. We were just talking in all of a sudden we hear a cry for help. And it was a gentleman and that youve seen the video of the red that that he had been told that the guy jumped the fence. So he went to the neighbor to look to see if the guy was still in the yard and the guy was in fact in the yard with the gun which or 15. And then proceeded to ask for his key in that im about to carjack your car and he was talking in gibberish in and out and cancer that he went ahead and gave them the car keys and as soon as the suspect turned around to know head to the car which was the driver you seen the video. He jumped him. He. Young them pushed him to the ground and thats when he started on calling for help and eric ran over their beliefs his dog and i went calling for the police and came back and you know shooting the video almost stepped on the air 15. The dog bit the suspect and he had actually a handgun that lou and there was a pipe bomb right closer to feet from a cleric but calm down after the dog bit him. Yeah, there is a lot to unravel here first its very brave of you to shoot that video. You have seen a lot as a as an eyewitness to what went on. Have you been talking to investigators and we understand the fbi is also looking into this. Okay. So at that you know when the armored truck and everything came and they told us you know go further down the road because there were still bonds. I did it my information to a Scotts ValleyPolice Officer neil roberts and i honestly have not heard from from anybody from palm. The county here. Its already figures and you said you saw on a r 15. Well, ill bet on it. Yeah. Pda. I mean you could see in the video in the beginning and i didnt even realize that it was there and i went i started approaching them to see if i you know i need to hold. The dog so in order if it eric me that you cant because eric was stepping on the guys arm. And so when i went to go maybe grab the leash from eric i will step the gun and then stand with on the ground said on careful dont step on the check they are 15 and clear you also said that you saw the explosive devices. Yes, i did. I thought one of the pipe bomb. Claire lot of names here and i want to kind of just make sure were were all clear the guy in the white shirt is eric there and the guy with the red shirt lying on the Ground Holding the suspect is sam. Sam family and im not with you front of one of the cottages that check in the backyard who. And sam was essentially carjacked to give the keys up and then just so were clear the suspect you say turned his back and sam basically jumped on his back and tackle them. Exactly. So were getting in and started screaming for help because he said that at the same time that he was down with the suspect was trying to get his phone and call 911, but he said that the guy had a lot of. Or you know, thats the gun caring, yeah. It was kind of playing around. And so you just happened to be driving by at the time and you again you are stopped police blockade. So you got out and you started talking to neighbors and then all of this sort of just unfolded. Claire, this is like something out of the movies, whats going through your head. To be honest with you i think you are there. I dont know its its kind of i mean its good that we are right now i honestly have an e o anything today but i dont know its just hard to. Did you ever a hand in it. Im sorry did you actually see that that. What happened afterwards too because we were still we ended up having to shelter in place they did a reverse 911. People may be living in that block that we had some people come out of their houses and so we just got a reverse 911 calls change back you make and to go north because of bomb and dis couple ended up having us mean eric. Going to their yard with the dog. And we were in their yard with the helicopters above us for at least 3 hours. So we get that we get the sense clear that you and the neighbors were working with the sheriffs there in the chp officers in trying to subdue the suspect. Well after after sam, and eric had a you know the authorities came in and took him into custody think that they fly them on the road and they took him in after that we just were hiding in place an evening like i said no authority. The test called us are updated us. I tried to go back to the scene to get my truck and they wont allow that right now so i actually had to get a ride home. So clear you are saying about the suspect that you thought he was speaking gibberish on can you describe the suspect little more. Okay when i the first person i spoke to that live in those kinds of things chris. He described the guy that climbed over the fence, not knowing that this guy was actually still there and the suspect and he said that he had a crew cut and he was look like in 20 and that was caucasian and so that you know what i could tell thats what back exactly was wearing the blue sweat shirt and brown pants. And then how what sam said that when he found him in the yard. He was making up words. He said something about duty while he was just making up words and the video you can hear him saying something about rain. It is really to get to erik mentioned that he was kind of talking a little bit like military. He thought maybe get a military background but. Mention from developing a bubble. So i dont know. Living in a bubble bubble living in the bubble. Yeah, ok in the end he was a resident of this area thats im vaguely familiar with ben lomond are you so you you dont live exactly in that neighborhood you just live. In a nearby area. Yeah i live in the nearby area and you know with people around the talking and their wives. One person that mention she was not from the area that he was from santa fe like over the hill tunnel day but im not and were looking now people around you know listening to Police Scanners and all that kind of stuff so. Were looking now at new claire that shows when authorities showed up so. Sand in the red shirt was holding down the suspect and then a bunch Law Enforcement showed up and we understand a chp officer got shot in the hand at one point it was that during this exchange right here. I believe that that was the first 16 because the suspect had blood on him and you know i dont know if it was it didnt seem like he made a big effort to climb over the fence or anything. Already had blood on him that i had but net. So he was shot earlier, yeah and we were hearing that the explosive devices had gone off so the the pipe bomb that you saw did not go off it was inert basically seated next guest an explosion, what. But as it started like maybe 2 hours after started walking maybe an hour after i dont know, but we started walking to the neighbors backyard that offered that the farc to get that. Neither because that kind of scared of ever before walking that if you just take your time. Clear this doesnt happen in in any city or neighborhood. But when you talk about the Santa Cruz Mountains you live in Boulder Creek. This isnt been lowman just described for people. How old laurel a region that is. Mom its very dense in redwood, you know one of key. Job is lumber. And i did. Can occur the very popular for the beaches and everything it takes from Boulder Creek, the santa about happen our down highway 9. Its a very windy. Look at this kind of violence that this kind of violence playing out in that area you never say no. You dont hear about it. You dont yeah there might be some crime with drugs and things like that. But not about shooting them. And all of it you have to Police Officers or anything like that. Eau claire ripped the ball people. Yeah, it uses real quick what did First Responders when they finally showed up and in this guy in the red sand he detained a person who killed one of their own and injured 2 others did they express their thanks to him for really a a heroic act of tackling this man after he was trying to steal his car. Yeah, i mean i i believe i would hope so i believe you know in the video of harney and waiting then you know at them and i even say im an rn i felt like i had to say that to get their attention because they want coming and i was scared that this guy was going to get up and you know even grabbed the rifle or. But one of the officers did say that they couldnt come to a quicker because they had to put in the call to dispatch and get the approval from dispatch in order to be able come in assess what clear before we let you do did you see the van itself that was full of the explosive devices week we heard it described as a white. Than that. So can you describe dont know i could not i just read about that too and i im trying to picture in my head, it by. You know did it was because i did parking a parking lot so im not sure and i won that round. You know that house and everything but i i didnt notice it ok well, you did a remarkable job im im sure your heart was racing and im probably a. Were still pretty much on edge tonight. But as far as they know it was only one suspect is there any discussion about anyone else or or do they think that this was just a solo. To be honest with you the whole entire time i heard that and i kept hearing about these carjackings and so you know i just got home about an hour ago to getting a ride from somebody and. Im not sure i know that the sheriff to paddle life. Briefing and talk about the officer who died in everything so. No i dont know if the gentlemen in the video the guy that he said in the steve somebody. Yeah the suspects been identified as stephen. Creo but again we we dont have confirmation that that is the individual but that is the person was taken into custody. So if you want to connect the dots there. You can do so and he is in the hospital and has not yet been officially arrested and charged because of the injury that that he sustained the suspect was shot to a heartbreaking. Night a heartbreaking day for the Santa Cruz County community certainly the Law Enforcement community. Claire wrecking ball really appreciate your time and thank you for sharing your experience, thank you for joining a scooter in europe come take a they say thank you, but i we need to take a quic want to take you live right now to Portland Oregon where this another night of protests there. They protest did now for 9 consecutive days vicki as we continue to track the demonstrations throughout the country as the George Floyd Death has really been the catalyst for a movement and there is no sign of these protests letting up today was a global effort as we continue track whats going on around the country and here in the bay area.
