Kron 4 continuing to monitor the protests that are taking place all across the country. In wake of the death of george floyd on the left side of your screen a live picture from seattle on the right a picture from denver both large crowds, packing the streets obviously very Peaceful Demonstrations taking place there in day 9 of demonstrations all across the country in honor of george floyd he is the who was seen on that infamous video. Dine with a knee of a Minneapolis Police officer on his neck for nearly 10 minutes. Today new developments in that case today we learned that all 4 officers. Now charged in the case the officer at the center with his knee on his back on that on his neck. Had his charges upgraded to seconddegree murder from 3rd. The other 3 officers now charged with aiding and abetting that officer will continue to monitor these protests all across the country for you right here on kron 4. A this afternoon kron 4 anchor pam moore got a chance to speak with california senator Kamala Harris about the new charges against the 4 Minneapolis Police officers involved in George Floyds death and new measures being worked on at the federal level regarding National Standards in place reforms would clearly one step closer to justice we also know that justice delayed is justice denied. The fact that it has taken this long frankly inexcusable because its not as though there wasnt much evidence in dispute. Here we are it is also good at that the attorney general has taken over that investigation. In fact, im working with. My senators cory booker who was dear friend the senator from new jersey members of the congressional black caucus, to put together a package of legislation to reform policing in america and one of the closest is that we have independent investigation. So that is progress. But the reality of it is that. Look george floyd should not be dead. We america is raw right now and you know her her injuries are exposed and we need to deal with it and we need to deal with it in a way that is not only about justice for george floyd and his family in that community. But is justice for everyone and im right now. It literally across the street from the United States supreme court. I mean washington dc and im literally right across the street from a marble building that has inscribed on it. Us of law equal justice under law. And the folks who are protesting in the streets are fighting for that ideal knowing we have not yet achieved that as a country and it is long overdue so senator harris as you know this short george fort case was not the first of its kind to happen over the last couple of years. Nonetheless it took this National Outrage to. To get the nations attention do you think that this will momentum will continue or that once again we will fall back into the same the things as same as theyve always been. Listen we can honor and. Frankly we got the nations attention 30 years ago when rodney king we got the attention of the nation with the killing of emmett till thats my point and i will know thats my point is well see you right to your right to ask that question but i think that we have reached a point in this country also where enough is enough frankly i believe that one of the greatest tools of progress in our fight for civil rights has been a smartphone because now everyone is carrying a video camera and capturing these moments that communities have been shouting about crying about the generations and finally now everyone is seeing it. It is tragic that it took that for people to believe that its happening. But now its laid there for america to see little bit community. It is have not generate tions and i do believe that that presents a moment to actually bring people together around the fact that this is long standing in terms of the problem and the fact that there are solutions that are literally within our grasp if we have the courage to take them on and some of her hair is also told panned that she is still pushing legislation to help small businesses. And by the covid19 pandemic and she says she wants stricter limits on who gets federal money. So that Financial Support doesnt just go to the powerful and those with access to power. What the to those who need it the most. Meanwhile other members of congress say they are working on federal reforms to the American Police system to ensure justice for george floyd and all americans of color. Kron 4 washington correspondent alexandra le mon found out that some lawmakers are now pushing to pass bills on Police Brutality and racial profiling in the coming weeks. Some lawmakers say now is the time for sweeping reform when it comes to Police Brutality and use of force george floyd. Their skin leaders from the black hispanic native american and Asian Pacific american caucus, is demanding accountability for the death of george floyd this injustice is not the case of a few bad boss. Police is democrats are pushing a resolution to condemn Police Brutality racial profiling and excessive use of force by police and texas congressman Joaquin Castro says they want more changes we had the excessive use of holds another proposal would require state and local governments to track police use of force. And reported to the justice department. The data would be made public democrats say they believe the massive nationwide public call for change will lead to support from republicans who have also been vocal about floyd steph we need to work to ensure that what happened last monday in minneapolis never happens again. And that the perpetrators of crimes like this one are held accountable california representative karen bass chair of the black caucus says reforms should have real time this is the time. Rate democrats hope to tackle the bills this month in washington, alexandra le mon. Singer break from the headlines for just moment to talk a little weather live at the embarcadero this wednesday evening. A picture perfect day across the bay area little warm. But how long will this warmth. The last chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow is here too talk a little bit about it lawrence. Yeah were going to start to cool down in fact today were starting to pick up a little bit of a sea breeze not something we really did see yesterday so see more than you see the wind blowing through the trees there. An sfo and a fact that linda is causing some issues of course we talk about our sassoon city. Theyre looking at some westerly winds now to 17 Miles Per Hour a fire reported along kellogg in that area and certainly the type of wind can blow that long that a grass fire. Those to move rather quickly in these afternoon breezes otherwise of things around the rest the bay area around the state kind of active again as weve got low pressure to the south spin up a couple thunderstorms across the Sierra Nevada also parts areas near Point Conception up to Santa Barbara and low cloud cover just off the coastline, but we did have a couple batches moving along the coast in those temperatures downright hot right now it is 99 in concord 98 degrees live more 100 degree still in antioch 93 in san jose. Temperatures go chicken in a 75 still 82 and warm as you make your way into oakland tonight going to see mostly clear skies. I do expect to pick up a couple patches of fog but it could be very patchy right along the coastline tomorrow, mostly sunny slightly cooler will notice a stronger breeze in the afternoon, but its going to take until friday and the weekend before we really see a change in the weather pattern low pressure still spinning off the coastline that will do so for another day and you get that suddenly wind things feeling a little bit muggy out there as well certainly were going to see that again as we head through the day tomorrow and then things begin to change as that system comes on store. Computer models a pickup in much the way of cloud cover, although i think well see a couple batches of fog along the coast. And then temperatures tomorrow still going to be hot in spots. Inland plan about 96 degrees in concord about 94 degrees in livermore 92 in santa rosa, about 72 degrees a little bit cooler in San Francisco back to you. Lawrence thanks. Much more ahead tonight on kron 4 news at 5 Facebook Says it is standing by its decision not to challenge president trumps post about shooting looters. Still to come tonight a fire continuing to burn out of control in the north bay were staying on top of breaking news. Prompting many people to evacuate the new details just into our newsroom. After the kron 4 staying on top of breaking news for you this wednesday night we are continuing to follow developments of a major fire burning out of control. The scene unfolding tonight near sisson city. The boat launch according to fire officials. This is video sent to us from a viewer you see that thick heavy smoke and it does appear to be near a number of homes at this point were still working to confirm if homes are burning. People are now being asked to stay away from an area south of cordy lee road right now we do want to take you to some live pictures of the scene that is unfolding there from the sky above sassoon city. You can see that it appears to helicopters trying to drop some type of retardant on the fire theyre trying to control the spread of those flames. Actually this is on the ground. Right from our crews there on the scene. You can see where some some areas have already been charred from. The smoke from this fire. That is continuing to burn there right now we still dont know exactly a number damage if any homes or how Many Properties may have been if there are any reported injuries and it looks like there may be some homes if this is the backside of a neighborhood. It does look like some homes according to this. A picture may may actually be on fire. According to that scene right there. We do want to let you know that for folks who are there in sassoon city if you are watching this right now, Crystal Middle School has been designated as an Evacuation Center. That scene is a that Evacuation Center has been set up in the 400 block of whispering. They laying there, its a sin city want to show you another picture that is on the ground. This from the sassoon City Police Department as well fire crews are going there through that area trying to save a number of homes. There in sassoon city we still are working to find out if there are indeed structures damage we do know that this started out as a grass and vegetation fire there this afternoon. Were still working to find out if there are indeed structures that have been burned. Were also working to find out if there are any injuries. It does look like just from this just from this early glimpse of the video that were seeing from this live shot on the right side of your screen. It does look like some homes have been impacted have been burned. From this fire. As you can see a very heavy police are a very heavy presence with fire crews there we do know that fire crews from valais hope are also theyre providing mutual aid to fire crews. There is a sin city as they work to battle, this very large fire that does not appear to be contained. At this point we are gathering more information as soon as we learn any new details about it. Were going to pass it along to while we are here on the air lets get over to chief meteorologist lawrence Lawrence Karnow who can tell us a little bit about exactly how the weather is affecting this fire. We know that anytime that there are large fires like this thing kind of create their own weather pattern or their own kind of weather that helps generate them. Yeah, they certainly can when they get very large and today of course weve already had those very hot temperatures were talking near a 100 degrees out there today, so things. Are pretty dry and then you get that fire started starting at about 3. 30 this afternoon near thats assume Wildlife Center and that is burning right through the marsh area of a parts of southern sassoon city you see it there look at the winds blowing to 17 Miles Per Hour again an afternoon breeze like that here in the bay area and you get a fire started that is a very dangerous combination so any of those homes in and around that area, especially due east of that fire certainly are going to be more greatly impacted by the fire deathly stay tuned, local fire conditions under local love aonb is were expecting that to continue here over the who knows when until they get that under control those winds will continue to whip in that area out toward the coastline were seeing the beginning of some changes the sea breezes kicked in a little bit today and thats a sign of things to come of course that will impact the fire conditions but the hot temperatures of course the record heat out there 80 degrees in oakland today, 89 at sfo that was a record or heard also said as santa cruz, how about that at the beach 95 degrees into the city of San Francisco talking 70s in a marina about 70 degrees 64 in the sunset at 64 degrees and civic along the coastline, those winds will start to pick up it will stay warm inside the bay and warming up as you head to the south and back in the hot theyre 90 in san jose 92 los gatos about 94 degrees and look more tomorrow 93 in pleasanton so another round of some very hot temperatures inland. But you notice that cooling just inside the bay and along the coastline that will bring those temperatures down in the next few days a big change in the weather pattern. Much cooler weather expected by friday even a slight chance of showers on saturday thats a forecast back to you. Lawrence thank you so much another story that were continuing to follow this wednesday. About the demonstration that is taking place right now in San Francisco as you can see hundreds of folks have definitely packed into Mission Dolores park. Now protests we have learned is now moving on to the streets. Surrounding the area around the park. Everyone doing this for a 9th day across america in honor of george floyd the man from originally from Houston Texas killed last week. On memorial day. By the name of a former Minneapolis Police officer, his death ruled a homicide. Earlier this week by medical examiners there in hennepin county. Today we learned that the 4 officers all 4 officers involved in George Floyds case have now been charged. In connection to the case surrounding his homicide. The original officer who had his name placed on his neck, derek chauvin. Now having charges upgraded from thirddegree murder initially to seconddegree murder. The other 3 officers who were seen. Some on his neck. The another officer who was kind of standing guard watching to make sure that no one could get close to try and save george floyd all 3 of those officers have now been charged with aiding and abetting in this particular case all 4 of them now being held on a 1 million bond in connection to this as well but as we mentioned hundreds of folks flooding the streets in the 9th day of protests all across the country this looks like a very peaceful demonstration as well were going continue to monitor the scene from as well and were going to kron forcing on top of breaking news for you this wednesday where a fire continung to burn out of control is a sin city. We do know that fire crews from sun city and also valais whole war on the scene there trying to put this fire out. We do know that it appears to be that some homes are now being impacted from this very large grass fire. That has been since this you can see right there and there are some helicopters some reinforcements have been called in to help to provide some aerial support with dropping down fire retardant and some water as well. The thick heavy smoke is all unfolding in an area. Near core delia road and the boat launch area there in sassoon city fire crews are urging people to stay away from that area so they can work to put out that fire. So they can get a better handle on it as well. Evacuation center for folks in that area if you are impacted by that has now been set up Crystal Middle School that is that 400 whispering bay lane.
