It is unclear what authority he has to do that in light of the president s announcement governor Gavin Newsome says houses of worship in california. Well get the green light to reopen sooner than expected kron fours Justine Waltman live for us in the newsroom with more on that plus some reaction from. Local religious leaders to all of this just in. I can possibly days away as what governor gavin newsom is saying hes taking a different tone from comments that he made at the start of the week when california will receive reopening guidelines for places of worship days ago. He said in Person Services were weeks away from rules resuming while indicating he understood the importance of faith for californians. Now his change in tune came just hours after President Trump declared houses of worship, essential services and said he would override governors who dont open them up this weekend. Governor newsome says his administration is reviewing these new cdc guidelines and reiterated there are efforts underway with faith leaders to come up with protocols for a safe or turn to services. Earlier this week, 1200 pastors leading up to 3,000 california houses of worship signed a declaration deeming themselves essential integrating to defy the orders and begin services anyway on may 31st. But reaction now from a local religious leaders remains mixed. Static and hallelujah of giving got to raise that as an answer to prayer and im so happy about and i hope and governor newsome listen to that and allow us to be able to reopen interesting to me how the communities of faith are defined were not defined by our buildings has it been a difficult time yes, its been a very difficult and a different time for people of faith we pray wherever we are and we have found ways to do service and to continue gathering. When asked to respond directly to the president s statements are governor said quote i think it was an adequate response. So as for how soon the state will let these places of worship reopen that information should be coming up by the end of this weekend. Live in the newsroom. The School District says it couldnt be happier with his message to the students. Coming up in a new study on hydroxychloroquine with some troubling findings that complications, thousands of patients around the world encountered a memorial day unlike any other for americans the weekend that would normally kick off the start of summer is now concerning some lawmakers about a poteitial spike in covid19 cases plus were learning about changes to the shelterinplace order for Sonoma County. New tonight, Sonoma County is amending its shelterinplace order and allow more businesses to reopen starting tomorrow. Restaurants and food facilities can open for out that Outdoor Dining only winerys tasting rose bars and pubs may offer Curbside Pickup and thats not all we have a chance to welcome in a supervisor david rapid from Sonoma County to explain more of these changes so supervisor tell in a nutshell whats going to happen tomorrow. Well actually starts at the minute after midnight the health order goes into effect in it really allows restaurants breweries bars winerys tasting rooms can open with outdoor seating as long as they offer meals. It also expands childcare to include Summer Day Program something thats very timely as we head into the summer season. It allows dry been ceremonies something again that is timely for high school flick and at your drive and movies as well so were Going Old School again and clarifies that counseling by faith based organizations. To be provided in person in the law also allows libraries offer Curbside Pickup kind a little cleanup of a previous order vote. Were excited to be able to be at this point and its a credit to the citizens of Sonoma County for taking the shelterinplace seriously for really making sure that were doing the right things for Public Health with the state. Approving our various order it really it really verifies that the county sonoma has met all the reading this criteria for an increase face through stage too so you know were excited to be able to dance all those incrementally and we have a long way to go its and another step getting everything back up to whatever are the normals going to be yes supervisor, thank you for being with which of these locations do you imagine is going to be most challenging. I would maybe think summer camp, but maybe you have a different view and also how will the county monitor these businesses and locations. In the summer camp rules are really kind tailored after what we have done what every county has really allowed for child care so groups of no more than 12 in all the different particles are in place in each one of these activities and i that we mentioned have pretty strict protocols and ways that you go about doing business plus on top of that youve got each individual business actually submitting their investment nation practices to the county for the Health Officers revealed so it theres some pretty you mitigations in place at the end of the day is really going to be down to behaviors of people and i think that for the most part people are understanding that to take this seriously to where the official coverings when youre out to keep the social distancing to remember the hygiene roles and it we think that if we do all that and we keep track of where we are we are where we are our on the health side that we can to kind of continue to incrementally a get things up and running supervisor know people are really anxious to get out, i know that bars and restaurants are really anxious to reopen. But the outdoor seating rule seems to be a question that a lot of people have. Theres plenty of restaurants that do have outdoor and Indoor Seating what about the places that only have Indoor Seating and theres been a lot of talk particularly in San Francisco opening up sidewalks and streets so that there can be some outdoor seating so these other businesses can also take advantage of these new rules. Yeah thats a great point and weve had those conversations here in Sonoma County because of the county level but which is a little different because its the unincorporated area and i know every individual city has been talking about that as well and i think what you see from all jurisdictions is really working with their businesses to make sure that we can provide a pathway to success and quite just like this entire shelter in place some will be able to do more than others and thats just unfortunate at the end of the day it comes down to the social distancing requirements, the ability to separate tables by 6 feet some some restaurants and some bars and wineries even have more space and others and were just going to have to work through that, but there isnt a willingness to use as much public right of way as possible and and streamline the approval process for that to allow restaurants in and other activities to take advantage of that additional space. Well supervisor rabbit thank you for your time, good luck to Sonoma County. We certainly hope it works out for you and then the rest of the bay area as well. You know, thank you very much. All good news on that front and hopefully thats a good news will be spreading across the bay areas we show you. A live picture outside as we get ready for a Holiday Weekend and take a look at the bay bridge on a gorgeous friday night our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow reporting from home tonight with the forecast which is going to be a hot line. Yeah hottest temperatures easily of the year were going to be talking about some triple digit heat as we head into this next weekend probably not going to be that cool even along the some 70s 80s. So tonight. We do have a nice evening outside a little bit of a sea breeze toward the coast were not seeing much of that in the coming days. You have clear skies out there right now but were going to see clear skies last. Thing well above the average in spots so well inland, the 79 just above the average i should say in concord 77 a little more 66 degrees in San Francisco. But here we go mostly clear tonight all the way to the coastline sunny skies tomorrow temperatures are going to start warming up and not getting real hot just yet i think thatll happen as we get into memorial day hot weather is going to stretch across the bay here and it will be an extended period of heat in fact National Weather service says issued an excessive heat watch for most of the bay area away from the coastline. Expecting some very hot temperatures even inside the bay and many of the valleys, those temperatures up in the 90s and even the triple digits monday through thursday thats a long time to be under that kind of heat so were going to feel that of weve also got to stay at home orders to and that its going to make things a little bit complex just done next week as people are trying to stay cool around the bay area. High pressure will build in nicely for the weekend it will bring. Yet that youll be up in the mideighties the warmer spots i think well inland tomorrow, so plan on those numbers and live more about 85 degrees 83 in santa rosa. She got 82 degrees in san jose about 76 degrees in hayward and oakland 67. In San Francisco. Here we go over the next few days were going to crank up those temperatures a look at the numbers, a memorial day. Well into the 90s inland, then we start to talk about triple digit heat tuesday, wednesday and thursday before finally cooling down big time by next friday. Thats a look at what the guys back to you. Still ahead a children collecting messages of encouragement for the nurses on the front lines battling covid19 and tossing in a special gift card that supports local restaurants at the same time details coming up. Plus how one hospital has been able to keep dozens of covid19 ive flown nasal therapy. It is held dozens of covid19 patients at an iowa hospital who may have otherwise needed a ventilator to battle the virus the therapy combines oxygen and humidifier water vapor propelling it through a tube into the nose as patients bring then it provides fresh oxygen into the lungs and its not even really that new its been in use at that des moines hospital since 2012. You know what they did with non Covid Patients it worked very well he patients off today. So we thought well this to be a great opportunity to try it on air. The treatment has been so successful, its prevented 56 people from having to go into the intensive care unit. Doctors say the average time on a ventilator 7 and a half days for the naval the nasal high flow therapy, its 3 days plus patients are able to move around to eat and talk to their families hydroxychloroquine the drug President Trump says that he has been taking is linked to a higher risk of death in coronavirus patients. Thats according to yet another new study researchers looked at more than 96,000 patients across the world nearly 15,000 of them took some form of the treatment which included that drug. All of the seriously ill patients who used it were more likely to either die or develop dangerously abnormal heart rates. Doctor deborah birx who is part of the White House Coronavirus Task Force Says the drug is not worth the risk. This i think the fda has been very clear on their website about their concerns about i dropped the clerk and to particularly when its combined the match allied and i think you see that in the study and i think the study although it is open label. It is. I tell you what i take on from the lancet study and i hope everyone here does in addition to what you just comment on. Barely shows the culver city that puts individuals at maurice. In the past the fda has strongly cautioned against the use of the drug to treat covid19 patients outside the hospitals coming up on kron 4 news today keeping social distancing at california beaches will be a priority this weekend. What you need to know before you go. A major announcement about the summer months from San Francisco mayor london braidwood parents and children need to know about the new look at summer camps and after the break more states are loosening restrictions heading into the holiday we so much of the country is probably not likely to go out to bars or restaurants, theaters and gyms and any time soon thats according at least to a new poll by the associated Pressnorc Center for Public Affairs research. In that poll only have the people who regularly went to restaurants or to the gym said that they would feel comfortable doing so again at least right now. The hesitancy to head out again could muffle any recovery and what has been one of the swiftest economic downturns in u. S. History. This memorial day weekend will look very different of course and officials wanted to stay that way new restrictions at beaches and restaurants are in place for the hopes of preventing additional spread of coronavirus. Erica hill reports. Signs of some are falling into place. Beaches parks pools open across the country weve got some counters so we can count people coming in. Barzee in houston getting a head start thursday night as texas lives more restrictions heading into the Holiday Weekend. In florida all childrens activities, including camp can now resume our kids have been out of organized activities for a couple months now. I think that we have a pathway to get it back. Officials at nationwide creating playbooks nobody wants to be the mayor from jaws who lets everybody back in the water a little too soon social distancing. The new mandate. Asks the must have accessory it is mandatory that you wear the mask within 6 feet of another person in public. You dont have a right to infect another person, you dont. As states ease limits on how many people can gather and where President Trump on friday to clearing houses of worship essential calling on states to let them open they can go to a restaurant which are now opening. Here in california they can gather there to get to get to physical food, then why can they not come to a church under the same guidelines and enjoy some spiritual food, Rhode Islands governor adamant. It wont happen in her state this weekend honestly that would be reckless. Its friday. Not ready. So the reason we did it the way we did it is. We gave him some time we announced it you know this week to get ready for next weekend people are work to do. Montgomery alabama emerging as a new hot spot. I think that weve been a little premature and are reopening of the economy. An alabama and thats led to the spike weve seen our numbers consistently go point worried with the memorial day weekend coming in the restrictions listening. That this is going to go like prairie fire new cases in the city nearly doubled since the beginning of the month. Another reminder that as the rules change across the country. The virus has not even see the top 3 states are maryland the district and virginia. And so there is still significant virus circulating here. Minnesota nebraska chicago and los angeles also on the task force radar the Navajo Nation which has been hit particularly hard now on lockdown through monday. Just 9 states showing a decline in new cases over the past week as the cdc now estimates 35 of infections are asymptomatic i know the weather is warmer. I know people been cooked up you know this Tremendous Energy to get out. You have to remain village vigilant. And for the first time in 20 years aaa decided not to release a Memorial Day Travel forecast saying that the pandemic is undermining Economic Data a sign that despite the gradual reopening this memorial day weekend will be unlike any we have seen in decades if ever some beaches are back open here in california that includes both orange an la county beaches but only 4 active use and that means no sunbathing are setting up towels in the sand you can surf you can bike you can get a workout seal beach is one of the few Orange County beaches allowing limited spaced out parking this weekend. In la county all beach parking lots will remain closed to discourage big crowds. Some chopper video right here shows the torrance shoreline which near the port of the san pedro a lot of people out there beach goers starting to hit the sand in southern california. The school year even though it ended with virtual classes is almost over but there was some good news regarding summer camps today. Thats because San Francisco mayor london breed announced summer camp programs will begin on june 15th, though it will look a little different than it has in previous years. Horton for kids first of all to get outside and re engage in yes with a walk there will be indoor spaces by. A lot more emphasis on being outside the summer for our children, the difference is last year we would have over 2000 this year we will hope to have over 200. And we will be serving sure, but also the most vulnerable such as children in our communities. Unlike past years this summer each child will be put into a group of 12 children and stay in that socalled pod for 3 weeks session about a 100 nonprofit camps will run throughout the city of San Francisco. Y m c a San Francisco camps will be more indoors and outside with a focus on learning and helping children catch up from missing time during the school year. Speaking of the weather and get now, lets give you a live picture of beautiful shot of the Golden Gate Bridge on this friday night was twilight settling in over the bay area counties that gorgeous our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow has more on the warm some say hot temperatures ahead, lawrence yeah i think were seeing numerous records broken as we look toward next week. And i think its going to be hard people are going to be looking for a way to keep cools. Specially in the next week right outside right now we do have nice clear skies. No fog to worry about looking good. As the sun setting in the bay area on a friday evening in well here you go High Pressure already building overhead looks like that is going to stick around almost all week next week and only strengthen to the middle of the week so temperatures to break down like this tomorrow, well start to warm up a little bit really just going to be a very Beautiful Day with some warm temperatures in the mid 80s, the warmer spots lot of 70s a few 80s around the bay and 60s but still sunny out toward the coast now things change as we get into the holiday. Those temperatures really going to heat up upper 90s inland by monday. And then they he really gets a full grip on the bay area by tuesday and wednesday with triple digit heat inland. Youre going to see 80s 90s even inside the bay and 70s and 80s at the coast. So that is going to be some heat wave coming our way records likely broken a good part of next week guys back to you thank you lawrence, we have a sad update to an Animal Rescue story we brought you earlier this week.
