big national story democrats will be wrapping up their opening arguments today in the senate impeachment trial of president trump. on wednesday house democrats focused on the july 25th phone call between president trump and ukraine's president yesterday they again cited some of those details but focused on the first article of impeachment. >>moving forward the defense team will get to work on preparing to argue their side we've got our washington dc correspondent alexander lemon live this morning to talk about this good morning. alex. >>hey james good morning. >>so we've got this dade well this final day of opening our was that we heard anything new or is this sort of a sort of their reaction reinforcing trying to get through to some of the senators. >>well we did see democratic house managers bring up some of the same evidence, but they also employed a little bit of a different strategy yesterday in that they played a little defense because we know that the president's lawyers plan to argue in part that anything president trump did was within his legal power as president to conduct foreign policy that there was no crime committed and certainly nothing that rises to the level of an impeachable offense now new york congressman jerry nadler tackled that argument head on saying it's terrifying if president trump thinks he can get away with what he's accused of because again democrats here are arguing that it all amounts to an abuse of power we also saw texas congresswoman sylvia garcia, acting a little bit preemptively bringing up joe the fact that when he was vice president he tried to get ukraine to fire a corrupt ukrainian official but garcia argued that that was official us policy and that biden was acting in the national interest whereas she said that president trump was acting in his own personal and political interest as interesting because i remember when they brought up biden we heard some reaction from gop senators say. >>once you bring a biden it allows us to call him in as a witness e are you hearing anything from the president's defense team about this or any other republicans. >>in the president's lawyers said the same thing that they were surprised to hear so much talk about biden because then it opens the door for them to talk about him, we also heard from those lawyers and republican senators that really they haven't heard anything new it's all been day repetitive nothing to change their minds they even alluded to the fact that they thought it was a little boring. democrats were quick to strike that saying that if republican senators are really interested in hearing anything new then they would support efforts to subpoena new documents and new witnesses well well that's pretty could come back actually. >>so what's next after the democrats wrap up their argument today does that mean the rip the president's defense team will start tomorrow. >>yeah that's been the plan all along we're now hearing that make it maybe a modified they may be a little shorter but they get up at 3, 8, hour days for 24 hours to make their the president's lawyers said they're not sure if they're going to take up that entire time it just kind of depends on what else they hear from democrats and then after that we'll hear a probably up to a couple of days worth of senators questions so we're looking at least 5 more days and then it kind of depends on what happens after that. yeah, the big question down the road. i suppose is will they vote in favor of allowing witnesses and that's going to be the big. >>turning point
