Look carefully the sound system swaying back and forth and officials did just postpone the remaining games for the night you can see people reacting year on their phones. Take a lot of people just couldnt believe it given the fact just happened. Lawrence karnow has been also following. This and warm so what what do we know a know it was kind thing we were just about to go on with some breaking news of just really what turned out to be a pretty shocked a very strong earthquake and then moments later we get the major earthquake rolling through of 6. 9 but whats curious i think about this earthquake is the death. It is so extremely shallow less than halfamile the death expected on that earthquake. So that means that all that energy being exposed to write to the surface at the earthquakes are very deep. Its a process where you call it anyway. She where you can actually loosened that energy by the time it gets to the surface. This earthquake is not that kind of earthquake. It is so shallow all that energy just striking interrupting right toward the surface. Theres going to be major damage and of course they already sustained a whole lot of damage with a 6. 4. Just the other day so theyve got now all that damage on top of that certainly things where we can from that previous earthquake of 6. 4 then you get a magnitude of 6. 9 that is extremely dangerous major earthquake effect in Southern California but look at all the red. These are all the earthquakes that have just occurred within the last hour and you can see that rain earthquakes all along this area. This will believed to possibly be a long the little lake fall, so its not the senator asphalt that were commonly hear about in california but a smaller fall system. But certainly capable of producing major earthquakes and that was the concern we have that 6. 4 earthquake. Do we know that was the major quake them was that actually a foreshock are pretty shocked to the major event. Well now we know a major earthquake even larger has now struck Southern California. Near the ridge crest area of 6. 9. Theyve seen about 14 earthquake since them of over 3, 4, on the magnitude scale certainly a long way to go in a very scary night in Southern California guys back to you. Well be checking back with you in the meantime the east bay, theres a Murder Investigation in pacheco the Contra Costa Sheriffs Office says a 29 yearold man died there this afternoon, yeah and witnesses telling our gail o and that the man apparently collapsed right in front of a Bowling Alley. She joins us live at the scene and has the latest on this investigation, gayle. Vicki right behind me is where the victim was found we do you know the victim is a pitch aco resident. We dont know what led to the death of that there was a trail of blood that spans across the street. Very shocking. I mean you dont really hear about this kind of thing on this neighborhood at all. Know we have the casino here. But its usually a good crowd. We air is usually pretty peterlee hear about things like that happening. Terry shocking to hear that im surprised normally this is a very safe. City very safe environment deputies continue to search for clues in the death of a man and to friday afternoon at one point the area to take a boulevard between center avenue and Second Avenue was closed. As investigators comb through the scene for evidence. The Contra Costa CountySheriffs Office have not released many details but an employee at this Bowling Alley who did not want to be on camera tells us the victim collapsed in front of the building just after noon, the employees says there was the lead with senior bowlers the employee also says he noticed on Surveillance Video a man coming up to the entrance of the building and collapsed in front of the bar door deputies blocked off surrounding areas. All afternoon, cleaning up the scene. Now back here live scene has been cleared a few hours ago and crews are cleaning out the blood stains on the sidewalk but up. Deputies do say that the and the victim each other theres no word on any arrest live in the jayco gayle ong kron 4 news. Gail i were going to go back to our breaking news at the top of the hour, a 6. 9 earthquake in Southern California time were looking at the usgs theyve been answering questions, lets listen and after still talking about it. And i guess not that just wrapped up, but again this was initially described as a 7. 1 quake downgraded to a 6. 9 but that is still like a huge quake and again this is happening and a very a rural area centrally in e Mojave Desert but a shallow quake, a lawrence was talking about this only about a half mile deep. So the potential for great damage. Fortunately it was not in a hiavily a populated area and in the past 1n days there have been 117 quakes of magnitude 3 point oh or greater centered nearby after that 6. 4 earthquake happened yesterday on the last half hour or so we have been getting of people calling in to the newsroom saying that theyve actually felt that quake that 6. 9 quake in ridgecrest Southern California. They felt it all the way here in the bay area in danville milpitas sacramento. Our a Lawrence Karnow has been following this for us and he has the very latest on this shallow quake that was originally reported at 7. 1. Now downgraded to 6 point now a 9 but still a very sizable quake a huge earthquake and weve seen aftershocks after that earthquake is high. As a 5. 5 and that was just 18 minutes ago, but theyve seen numerous, its amazing to watch all those earthquakes all those are just seeing red. Those the earthquakes that actually occurred within this last hour or so weve this magnitude before california. Were lucky. This is not downtown los angeles. This is a catastrophic type of earthquake. Just because it is so shallow all that energy from that earthquake literally explodes to the surface when its only a half a mile or so you can suspect that theres going to be major damage in that area to roads to buildings to a telephone poles, you name it. And it was felt all around the state all the way down into mexico there been reports all the way up in the sacramento, las vegas feeling it that far away that gives you an idea of the strength and power of this major earthquake that has hit Southern California course remember just yesterday we were wondering what exactly was going to happen had we actually had the major quake at 6. 4. Now we have the answer to that it appears the 6. 9 is that major quake it would be hard to imagine a larger quake, but certainly that is not out of the realm of possibility i same seismologist would tell you theyre still a percentage where there could be actually a larger earthquake after this not saying that thats going to happen. But theres a percentage or chance that that could actually happen still so. This is a developing situation. Were a long way from this being over these earthquakes will continue until the ground completely settles long those fault lines there. But certainly were a long way from being done guys. And getting a lot of calls in to the newsroom. Theyre still coming in. But interesting that people in the bay area. I mean milpitas and were we talk about what Vicki Las Vegas and people are feeling this over a very wide area. We had someone in brent would just send a photograph of their pool, the water, the pull water was so was undulating. So it just actually transferring all the way 360 some miles here to the bay area how is that possible. Yet. In the end that amazing, i mean thats just the energy thats being transferred youre not seeing the ground actually traveling but that energy is traveling right through. All the earth and the surface of course itll affect different quite differently if you live in a sandy area may affect your area a little bit differently liver. Rocky area, youll be affected differently by that earthquake, but. They continue to see these aftershocks, im just looking at the latest right now we just had a 4. 1 that was 11 minutes ago that is in the little lake area right near the cereals valley right near ridgecrest so they continue to see those earthquakes just kind of piling up and im more theyre almost too many to count on look im looking at them right now, and its unbelievable to see the series of earthquakes looks like aftershocks after that major earthquake and by the way. Im now looking at the usgs feed and they may have just upgraded that earthquake to a 7. 1. Thats right now seeing on the very latest reading there so theyre going to triangulate the scientists the seismologist are going to take a look at the earthquake from different aspects in and around where that major earthquake happened and theyre going to triangulate and figure out the exact magnitude of that earthquake. So that number may shift here within the next couple days the way it shifted doesnt matter. This is a major earthquake. Theres going to be major damage is a major story for Southern California. Were looking at here you talk this is that shot i was talking into danville not grant would but theres that cool in danville a viewer sent it to shaking all the way what more than 300 miles away so a lawrence made reference to the fact that this is a very shallow earthquake unusually shallow Something Like a half half a mile so that would then distribute that energy far and wide as opposed to you know deeper into the into the er and if youre just joining us again this is a major quake were hearing a 6. 9 were hearing 7. 1. It to hit about 00 19pm tonight, centered only about 11 miles from ridgecrest and again thats same area where 6. 4 quake hit yesterday on the 4th of july and it was felt downtown in a rolling motion was it seemed to last some people said 3040 seconds and again were now hearing that a people over a very wide area felt this vegas danville. Across much of a Southern California. Yeah, it is mark carpenter had reported a in our 8 oclock news that Nba Summer League game between the knicks and the pelicans that has been postponed. Because of the earthquake people really felt it there so. That is on hold as well. I know lawrence is a efferding you know trying to get more information for us obviously this is preliminary this happened just to in the last hour or so so we havent gotten damage reports and. I suppose if theres a Silver Lining we could say that it in the Mojave Desert there is not a highly populated area. I shutter to imagine you know was this to speculate if this was in a highly populated area pretty much the middle of nowhere the Mojave Desert to near the town of ridgecrest it could that we know that it caused some damage but vickies right were really not getting any detailed reports of damage or injuries but at this point that would probably be surprising because again this just happened about just before 00 20pm tonight in the peculiar thing is weve thought yesterdays quake right the 6. 4 quake, good. Said was the biggest to hit this region in 2020 years. They were describing usgs has said that there would be a series of aftershocks and they were somewhere in the range of 5 point o this one superseded the 6. 4 now are saying its 7. 1. So theyre describing this is a pre quake. In lawrence we want offer a fair shot and so. Bear with me here for a moment is there a possibility that there could be something even larger looming that this could be also this could be a foreshock it would it would be hard to imagine that we could see a larger earthquake on those fat systems but. Thats certainly a possibility i mean there are the seismologists will tell you that there is a percentage chance specially going out work for the next 24 hours that they could in fact see a larger earthquake. So a lot of unknowns still there right now although we know is they they they have been affected by a major earthquake you can see the shaking on the cam there in southern calif rnia. As that hit so. It is going to affect much of that area they just had major damage from the 6. 4 just yesterday. But now theyve had a 7. 1 on top of that and im looking now and it appears it has been upgraded again to that 7. 1 from the 6. 9. Im seeing that on a couple of different to us. Yes sites right now, but theyre going get those official numbers here within the next 24 hours as to the exact magnitude but what we can say is that was a major quake. It was extremely shallow which makes that incredibly dangerous all that energy just erupting to the surface and causing massive amounts of damage i can imagine right now all the roads that are damaged that are twisted any a rail Railway Lines probably twisted metal theyre going to shut down all those areas of any type of a transportation just to make sure that they can check those roads checking the airfields in that location to make sure that there things that are so severely damaged that they can land remove any vehicles in there. This is a this is an incredible earthquake. Something that you dont see that often but certainly weve already seen it tonight and it will be very very interesting to see some of the live shots tomorrow to see what kind of damage they sustained. A lot of video but again we keep talking about the because its one of the things we have where the this is in danville is obviously shaken. We saw few moments ago, hollywood a camera overlooking the hollywood area and cameras shaking and interesting that just a few hours ago seismologist and said there were. 1700 aftershocks after the 6. 4 quake for this 7 and we will obviously yes, and they said that they were hoping that that meant the chances of another big one or diminishing and i guess the answer is no it. It did not mean that because now were talking 7. 1. So lawrence. Let me ask you again you just in terms of the proximity here. We know the San Andreas Fault is a big fault line runs said. It through california. But this is not on that fall. I know this this appears possibly be on the little lake fall system is kind of a smaller fall. But certainly a lot of these faults run through california that we dont even know about and sometimes we dont discover that theres an actual fault there until we have an earthquake. Now we didnt know that this fall was in that location, capable of producing large earthquakes. I think they would probably tell you they were surprised that they saw something larger taan what they had yesterday but certainly thats what weve seen tonight. Youre looking at live pictures although at this moment i dont see much but weve been looking at live pictures over los angeles a few minutes ago cameras shaking overlooking the hollywood area planned only imagine if were feeling it here and they felt it as far as far away as las vegas in mexico. What is going on in los angeles right now. Yeah and again the second major quake in less than 2 days one rocked buildings across the southern part of california. An ad during a adding a lot more jitters to an already very nervous region people have got to be astonished that this thing is this is the shot overlooking hollywood. Yeah and then as we mention too that a Summer League game that uh is still postponed um you know we had some shots of that there was kind of in the dark but it was showing the overhead scoreboard. At the thomas and mack center that was swaying they not officials are elected to delay the game and have the teams just leave the floor. Ah there it is right now the yeah everybody can you imagine what its like to be in there. All right weve got another News Congress see us or now the 5. 4 aftershock this morning. Extended that fall what we saw from the main shock from the set of the force from the 6. 4. The 5. 4 extended a bit to the northwest and the 7. 1 x seems if extended even farther to the northwest. So the fault is growing. Were up sure to peace in the first earthquake. Were actually a bit more on the 5. 4 this rupturing more now. It is moving towards the away from the metropolitan areas far as we can tell and a 5 chance this will go for it right every its this is another earthquake, everyone has a chance. Im trying to think if weve ever seen a situation with a 6. 4 7 and then something even bigger and i cant think of one. Not that it is impossible that i i cant give you an example where its happened before. We knew we had a for sharks to a lot of other earthquakes. The landers earthquake the which is 7. 3. 2 months earlier there was a 6. 1 called the joshua tree earthquake thats a far enough apart that we dont usually use the word for shock we call it a pre shock. There was a 3. 8 a couple of hours before the 7. 3. In 1987, the superstition hells earthquake, 6. 6 was preceded the day before by a 6. 2. So this is thats why we keep on saying one in 20 chance. Well, this is the 20. Want talk about the 6, 4 yesterday and how it relates to the 7 what which was the main point which is the by definition because the 7. 1 is the largest we give it the name main shock. So yesterday or an hour ago we were calling the 6. 4 the main shock. It is now had. Aftershock thats bigger than itself. And so we changed the name and to 6. 4 is now a 4 shock and that really large aftershock has become the main shock. Those names for shock main shock aftershock. Our semantic there are tools for trying to describe whats going on. But when you have a sequence going on every earthquake makes another earthquake more likely and thats what were seeing right here and youre already having aftershocks can you talk about how many hoping. Well all right so just look right down here in the lower part since the 7. 1 were only seeing basically the force and 5 showing up. Weve 1, 2, 3, 5. 7. Ok so we have an earthquake that already begun up north its just slightly to the northwest of the main shock. Early Warning System is saying 5. 7 with 26 seconds till it gets here. The one this was a 5 to 4. 9. We felt so this is assuming that the magnitude isnt really miss estimated my guest will be will feel this is a comes through in about in 10 or 2 in 10 say that we expect this magnitude of throughout the rest of the evening. Well yet the largest aftershock is likely to be a 6. Way to go and a 3rd are there. It is. The levels of it was less than i saw i felt from the one that was labeled a all right so clearly were a long ways away from the earthquake were still to review it. Remember that the people and ridgecrest are going through a lot worse than this and we are already had damaged houses the structure fires out of the first earthquake. This is going to have been more intense shaking. This country just as a 3. 5. And lucy at on the same fault line is the 6 or well, yes, the same fault system it does appear to have multiple strands to what weve already seen. The 2 perpendicular ones. Yes, i think it got the the man you knew the magnitude wrong. Yeah. It hasnt come through yet. So can you explain the shake alert again because some people just got the initial report quote unquote wasnt working. Ok explain it that there. What does the usgs handle that and yet so the system word. We are so bad the system the chic alert system work both on the usgs side and on the shake a little away side. The reason why alert notifications didnt go out to ellie kelly is that the threshold for shaking was set above what the estimated shaking one so. It was just the way that the system was designed in fact the same thing happened again tonight my understanding the alerts to not go out and and she colored l a magnitude that was estimated with early Warning System was 6. 2. So the initial magnitude estimate was too low. Consequently, intensity is were below that threshold. So the system is not perfect. But again what was experienced here in pasadena at la area. These are not damaging ground motions whats going on up in ridgecrest those are damaged well motion so that those folks are really feeling the chance of another large quake like this or even larger tonight. Well as doctor johnson said theres a theres a 5 chance that this could be followed by an even larger quake, for. Well thats that that number 5 as it usually for a few days to most likely time is within a day which is what of course we we just saw what 30 hours or something 36 hours yeah, that earlier that you dont recall any sign or place sequence where was followed by a greater oh no no i just dont remember one that happened in california that have that series. There are places elsewhere in the world, there was a magnitude 8 and a half that was a foreshock to a 9 and a half in chile. So there is nothing about the magnitude that says it cant be a fortune right but in california want win. Seismic city of the state youve never seen anything ball was 7. The out that that doesnt mean we we have in the matter. We have a air field is quite yet. The tape the take away here though is that but as we have just seen between yesterday and today quakes that weve say our main shocks can actually be 4 shots a large earthquakes. So we wont know till it does or doesnt happen. Yeah, yeah, there theres a small percentage of the same death. For the most part is a 6, 4, uh 17 kilometers. Yeah, so its epicenter is a little bit deeper. Wait we do have jolla just out in the field we havent got reports back. But theyll be able to go out and you also remember. The so thats the 10 miles and right its 10 miles down where is the one yesterday was more like 6 or 7 miles down. However a bigger earthquake also it involves a larger fall to it still may very well i probably this is coming to the surface. What youre really worried about is are we going to trigger something outside of this region, right. Because its too were too far away the ability to trigger another earthquake is very spatially. So the most likely place to trigger it is at the same look at the same fault as you go away with this data becomes much less likely so far is that from the senator is. Ways we you know its not even on that figure its a its over a 100 miles to the san andreas from from this location. That fault is a lot closer garlock fault is another long fault if we were going to be triggering something really big. It might be a source for this is sort of like when landers happened near the san andreas and we said oh if were going to start of something bigger the san andreas ram of course it didnt happen. That was a possibility a low probability possibility. Luckily really runs to some of the most isolated parts of california they were too old and making this a note pad. And so there was that lowered the leg right now the theft. The northwest part its extended in ground where is north this the southwest striking one you want to doesnt seem to have had more earthquake is not a surprise at all to you that this fault system was capable of this kind of or 30 years now. There was a magnitude 7 and a half in 18 72 in the owens valley. There have been lots of 60s theres this whole series when i said nevada. 1915 1954 and i dont have the magnitudes in my head this time, but they were sevens. There were series of earthquakes with several events 67. In mammoth in 1980 there were 4 magnitude 6 and a half that happened in one sequence over about 10 days. This part of california is characterized by these type of groups of earthquakes that there might be it several that and the larger the first one is often not the biggest one knowing that which one is the biggest one means wait until we see that we are getting another one. One of the last time we have something sizable of garland. Im not an historic record store prehistoric. This done in about 25 miles earlier and thats an approximate guess off of looking at these figures which are having trouble coming up. The fall is that the one thats and moving into trying leak. That southwest striking was the one that sort of from china like down to ridgecrest northwest is going up through t china lake. May be so that i know that there has been trouble trying to get geologists on todays uh have you guys made any progress on who are geologists. You have contacted the navy. And are able to get on the base with some limited access. Now that was wire to tonights event so presumably of well i would i would expected there may be further damage on the naval base. We dont know yet and gotten reports back. My suspicion is that the geologists are going to be able to get out there very quickly and look at potential rusher but not the other a common here just falling on what doctor jones was saying when we have events where of the main shock then becomes a foreshock typically the triggering is relatively close and thats actually what we saw here these 2 earthquakes are very relatively closely located so that really green typically does not happen and a great distance more typically if its close by. I cant think of any example where weve seen this type of foreshock triggering that isnt within just a matter of a few kilometers 8. Famous widespread, one was out more ranch and and superstition hills a 6. 2 that was on a. Southwest strike involved and then set off a 6. 6 on the northwest striking fall sort of like this. Elmore ranch was up here. But the fault extended right down to the superstition hills and what we were seeing aftershocks pounding at the superstition bills fall up and at the time that the earthquake happened the main shock happened and weve got a similar situation here where we have. Aftershocks along this fault we had that we have the 5. 4 breaking through a big towards the northwest and that we had and we now see more of aftershocks up to the very northwest and. Its possible that will continue to extend up to the northwest one magnitude quake you can expect. Sequence of over year. All right since the 7. 3 landers earthquake, the law would last magnitude 5 to that 1992 earthquake happened in 1998 6 years after the main shock. We should be expecting to record earthquakes here for a long time. Can you describe that to wane a weird is that. John was there when it went with a man shot was. It well that we need is is is very isolated its desert. Not a lot of population. Actually in in a sense for being able to get people out there and look at it it it theres a Good Opportunity and also because its not densely populated a chance of having damage to structures and injuries he much lowered. But it is still very you know its hard rock. These are faults that are breaking through hard rock thats why they agreed and cal tech officials talking about this. 7. 1 quake that hit around 8. 19. Were now getting some word of kern county authorities talking about injuries and a firefighter, yes, and you can imagine and those talked about earlier the road were weve got Brad Alexander on the line with us now hes with cal. Oh, brad we understand the governor has activated. Oh yes said to the highest standard now to be able to deal with this situation what what can you tell us. Thats right. We are activated the highest level your state Operations Center here in sacramento. It also activated our Regional Emergency Operation Center in Southern California support local request for mutual aid to the area. We are hearing reports of multiple fires possible structure collapsed. A rock slide in the region as well as a damage to a freeways in the area. So the kern county fire officials are reporting all of you theyre not providing many other details ab are you are you able to ascertain anything more than what theyre saying or youre still. Investigating. We have been in touch with the city and the county Emergency Managers already and they have requested. Fire law and Emergency Management and medical services, so were the region as well as much of the other parts of Southern California to start going that way we want to forward in the early hours because most of that the critical time to get to people who hurting or possibly trapped in the grass curing. Yeah. And brad again at the first we are not getting a much detail vickies right were hearing about all kinds of problems give People Better idea of what we asked does when you are sending out resources. What are you sending what are you doing. Were sending local authorities are requesting so it could be a very specialized type of injury here or debris crew. Assets from the military because of the California National guard who was here with us at the Operations Center in sacramento. It could be php resources that could be anything at the state level or we can be the middleman to get federal resources appear is well. Because so because we have been hearing uh reports now of a possible injuries in building collapses good weve learned in earthquakes all around not only california but in mexico and elsewhere in the world that time is of the are you able to get to that area quickly do you have people on the ground there ready to take helpers is going to take a while. Well the one fortunate thing about having another major great just a day ago is that we do have resources already there or near the area that are either turning around from the previous response or theyre hunkering in for a longer stay now that they had a second that follow this one. Brad give us again because you are hearing a little more than we are to sound like at this point. Summarize again what you are hearing in terms of the problems. Bigger problem i think we have right now is that its getting dark and it i doubt i didnt summer this is an area of california that could be one of the hottest areas are going to be different people are able to get air conditioning walking and they may the population, the elderly or at act the should be shoes. So help give it your concern for the next couple of hours on top of those like and think the call that were getting on injuries or rescue me. Bread maybe you can explain this a little bit more clearly than that we understood from usgs you know we have that early Warning System the shake alert. Early they did not to it. It didnt reach that threshold to warn the folks in los angeles. I guess there are threshold was set at about 6. 2. What we through exactly what this does for people and how many second said it gives them an opportunity to want to reach safety before the quake hit. Well do our best to sort of boil it down so this earthquake early Warning System is that your to Center Better throughout the state that will protect a certain threshold. Earthquake you can the ground and send a signal as quickly as possible Terror Network of cell phones that are connected to read you that Early Warning it could be or to go back there or it could be a multitude of seconds even dozen for seconds. Warning and what that your torch is getting people to back away from anything dangerous or sensitive that they might be doing at that moment, you know they air hospitals performing a search for your current into river you guys. It can automate systems to slow down. And grab some of the specifics that you mentioned you mentioned a rock slide. You heard about a building or buildings that may have booked collapsed. So i will tell us more about what youre hearing in that regard. You know i only got initial report that i and i was jumping on to this call. They give you a look theres not information possible the move right into another meeting to get more of it right after i get up again. Ok you talk and yeah before going to were going to let you go in just a second, but just a quick question about. Are the grids operating in communications are people in the area able to communicate with one another and in what about power. First responders are able to talk to any other radio traffic is actively working. We are getting in touch with california edison to make sure speaking of communication, just ran out of austin but bottom hes talking about the fact that weve been talking about the fact injuries are being reported. Damage were hearing about fires. He mentioned a rock slide. You mentioned buildings which may have collapsed one of the things that was interesting from the News Conference i thought vicki. The question could this triggers something huge outside that region and for what its worth the cal tech scientist saying no that is not likely its too far away. A 100 miles away for example from the San Andreas Fault. So for what thats worth. But you can see why people are really concerned well. Theyre nervous there because they have just experienced what we read was what 1700. Quakes in a period just leading up to 4 oclock today, this is before the large quake that day just after 8 today. I dont know lawrence if you have a moment, perhaps you can you know they just one second are sending listen in again the usgs skies. Plus hear what he cites widespread impact in the los angeles area. That it near the epicenter region, the rich breast area. You know those those folks are having to deal with the law we havent gotten a direct reports here but im sure theres lots of damage and they are probably dealing with aftershocks as well. They want hear your geology is what information will they provide well theyre going to be out in the field. As soon as they can as best they can obviously its night time right now they may be limited this Naval Air Weapons station. Ok, so theres a you know unexploded ordinance issues they may not be able to get out there at night when they get out there, theyll have to be escorted. That all those logistics or something theyre going to what theyre looking for is. Finding a fall where we find that motion thats happened because we are seeing with our size monitors we say we see these waves coming off of here and we calculate back theyre probably coming off of the surface when we get those feel geology its like this fall has moved and so too is it around trees. We dont live in out there is there any chance at all know that anything under drop in the navy may have triggered any of you know. Look at weve set up pretty Large Nuclear blast without ever setting off an earthquake, the largest earthquake. I think set off by the Largest Nuclear like a man that even in the height the center for this one is is down to 10 miles beneath the surface is there anything about this for quite surprising at all. The well, you know in a way you know as doctor jones was explaining yesterday after the 6. 4 there was a possibility of having a larger event and sure enough we did. And you know the mechanics of these 2 faults the kind you get 14 actually makes a lot of sense in a jeep from the geologic or scientific perspective. So i would say no theres not really any surprises that weve seen so from that. Well hopefully of number one learn a little bit more about how makes work. Number 2, i think, but you know theres teams out there looking at damage help buildings responded. Every earthquake is a chance to learn what worked what didnt work and make improvements and obviously a better understanding of earthquake triggering. Will be able within this because we have you know i can go and rattle off all these previous requests were seen one trigger the other. The recordings we have of those earthquakes are primitive compared to what we have now and we dont really know what the mechanisms were in this earthquake with the system that we put in place to do Early Warning. We now have and hundreds 100s of stations that are out there giving us much clearer pictures of whats going on in the fall. So now were going to be able to see exact in it much greater resolution we have in the past what part of which fall moved in how did the pattern progress and start and then of course theres always the hope that will find something thats different about the 4 shocks it is a living just we havent him. Let me let me just add in terms of learning the shake alert system which has been put in place in the in the last few years. It is constantly being tested this is an excellent test case for that system well be able in the in the coming days be able to analyze how the system performed does it are improvements required a suspect yes maybe in terms of estimating the magnitude so that their point where will be able to build on this event and make some progress. Its not something coming from a scientist yeah, i dont know that doubt thats coming from the us, yes, so earthquakes obviously cannot occur above ground. All right there are some times where our location might show up as being a negative dept. And that means something went wrong and how we the death is actually much harder to come. Might of a might have lost them were having some Communications Problems here to spend if youre joining us. Again were talking the second large quake to rock Southern California in todays it is a 7. 1. We are hearing reports of injuries damage we had someone from callaway as saying that hed heard about a rock slide. Multiple fires and a building or buildings paro which have collapsed right, weve got a hold of i can cuts a moto he lives in ridgecrest a kid you with us. Yes on your yeah, how are you doing tonight. And the wind and the problem here should tell the folks out there that you are rusk at dozhd addresses are off sky here. Kron 4. Your son is worried about you so youre ok sounds like youre okay, but what did you see and feel if anything can you are in ridgecrest correct. Are now wind was just show you so are slightly. Yet you see happened is a lot in television and the snow yet this so on the earthquake that we told here and so i show in the know when cold. One state only lost a lot of water. A lot of whats legal. Have you can if youve been talking to neighbors or people who are perhaps more damage with whats going on in the neighborhood. You know and then with other than other of 11 there whether the water. This change. Yeah weve been hearing reports of a building fires and collapses there are looking at a picture right now. That is recruiting across the empire. Just so you know camera were getting scattered reports said obviously youre not saying too dramatic but were looking at a photo of a a significant fire and this is going on somewhere in ridgecrest. Yeah, its not in our neighborhood. Are you hearing from other people that to live elsewhere in ridgecrest that. I mean obviously you folks are probably lost a lot of sleep just given the flurry of a. Earthquake activity that youve had in the last couple days. Enough know that the show you are looking be quite yet the can we were hearing that the initial quake tonight at just before 8. 20. Was. It was felled by an awful lot of people and it was a rolling motion might have lasted as long as 40 seconds. So specifically what are you what did you feel at that point what were you feeling. Work stairs the starter shape too. Of it also noise associate with them. Those calls that come in warning cells. So have you experienced i was sorry go ahead go ahead. I dont know what this she liked to not when im in over a minute. Really a long time to be feeling that kind of shaken. So own house bottom line there. No. You dont have any damage. You know notice it and the point of the show water they start cool. So can we are hearing that this is now considered the main shock that the 6. 4 yesterday was a foreshock youve got to have in the back of your mind hey you know is there going to be one even bigger. What what what are you talking about with your neighbors and are you thinking of. Staying in the area are you know leave things by she and the dogs and excited. Even the more sense to do so bottom line can it sounds like youre taking the in stride your hand pretty well but were glad that you do not have any has significant damage where you are. Were fortunate. All right kendall we wish you well and thank you for taking the time to talk to us and they do call us back if you, you feel anything else. Got high with lauren say here for a moment just to describe what we have heard. You had to told us earlier that this is a very shallow quake less than a half a mile down so its got a lot of energy packs a lot of punch. Yeah thats and thats the danger if you get a quake that is so shallow all of that energy from the tearing the rupture. Along that fall. And it gets to the surface in her and thats why theyre seeing some of the damage were going to see major damage. Im sure along many of the roads there theyll be almost impassable which is going make it hard for people to get in there to help these people tonight because it is happening at night you can see the roads, its very dark out there very unpopulated area. I should mention that there are 29,000 people that live in the ridge crest area right near. Well, the epicenter. The earthquake of 7. 1 so certainly those people. Are in need of help tonight. Dont know if they all have power dont know about the situation theyre gonna have to deal with that tonight is going to be a rough night for them and they continue to see numerous earthquakes are counted. 26 earthquakes of magnitude 3 point o or greater since the 7. 1 just over an hour. So yes i want to say just within the last hour it was just real fast for people who dont know the area. At least th nk goodness, this is basically in the middle of nowhere. That is this is like a nightmare scenario if this were to happen. Los angeles. Were talking about just a catastrophe and its bad enough as it is but this is a more sparsely populated area and some of the deserts of Southern California. For all the people that are there though i mean this is a extremely a scary situation tonight. Ok we have been listening in a press conference with the usgs i lets go ahead and the. See if theyre still going if they have any new information was found to be structurally ok that was after the 6. 4. So the engineers are there and they have looked at some buildings. Clearly theyre going to be looking either the same buildings or other buildings now. But its too early for any of that information coming in and the number that any hot both the geologists in the knee in 2 years. Are physically looking at things and its a lot more difficult to do it right. Again i think what theyre going find out more about the so were going to we need some time to to kind of look at the data thats come in will have a briefing shortening. Hopefully and so lawrence is telling us something here off camera wants to just repeat what you just told the earthquake we had tonight a 7. 1 without that earthquake was large yesterday at 6. 4. But remember these are measured. Whats called a logarithmic scale and so the earthquake tonight of 7. 1 is actually 5 times greater than at 6. 4 new can imagine all the damage that was caused by the 6. 4 yesterday. And now they have a 7. 1 on top of that and we dont know there could be a larger earthquake after the shooter some the seismologists say theyre still a 5 chance that we could still see a larger earthquake which would be hard to imagine after having a 7. 1 tonight, you know and folks are familiar with the san andreas but this is on the little lake fault system unbeknownst to usgs. You know it started to express itself in ways that they didnt know necessarily was going to be this large. There was some discussion about another fault system called the garlock system on these are all not not familiar names to s. Yeah, but there is some thought that this could possibly trigger something on that nearby garlock system yeah theres houses were there is there called stress triggering. That seismologists have learned that some of these earthquakes kind of talk to each other. So you can have an earthquake along with say the little lake fall and that will san energy in shock waves through the ground and they that energy gets stored up and could affect some of the neighboring fall, so. Thats a from one of local scientists name ross time at the many years ago came up with that theory and certainly that these of these faults can actually affect each other. So they dont operate as a separate and then you could certainly trigger another earthquake along another fall system if its close okay, using that theory. And because you said that faults talk to one another lets hope they dont make a Long Distance called to the hayward fault know thats thats the good thing is that this is far enough away from the hayward or the yes, it shouldnt affect that all of the things again i thought was interesting at that News Conference reporters asking could this triggers something outside the region, something. Even in this area and theyre saying that really they dont have the last word always but theyre saying that seems very unlikely and yet the San Andreas Fault is what more than a 100 miles away. So they think thats too far away and not. Likely. Happening yeah i would say so you know the vessels earthquakes go with distance, theyre losing energy. And so those fall center in around right near the epicenter. Those fall systems are going to be most greatly affected by a large magnitude earthquake like this and certainly if one hasnt enough stress on that fall system already you can add to that stress by getting a large quake like this entry or more earthquakes in that area. But the senate races too far away. The hayward fault is too far away. We dont have to worry about that been affected by this large magnitude quake, although we did have people say they felt it in the bay area in the sacramento into las vegas. So this is a large quake. With large extent the right now doesnt look like itll affect our fault systems locally anyway. Thank you. Lawrence said weve got a list of carlson shes the chief from casey e t bakersfield weve got. Kg hes sorry about that cant read my own writing. Good to have you with us. Your nerves are probably a little bit frayed here tonight talk to me about whats happening down there. Thanks for having me actua ly what happened was i was home for my dinner break and was sitting on the couch comfortably, what all of a sudden this huge rolling effect to start to happen it probably lingered for about 30 seconds or so my chandelier started swaying cool water was splashing shane out the pool and even was so violent that. Slate took the filter out and the pool also it definitely was his son shaking, it shook me and it was it or as michael rolling feeling this time and it was definitely stronger than. I tried to call the station and with my cell phone. It is 7 all circuits were busy and that is one tip as a meteorologist, i know that you should stay off the cell phone. When this sort of event happens because those that are really in need to get so that point i decided to go ahead and tax our anchor at the station. And she said yes i we just hide a 7. 1. And thats what we thought it was a 6. 9. And of course now has been upgraded to a 7. 1 earthquake. So listen what kind of are what are you hearing from people in the in. Your area. Baker still is the next closest television station market to the ridge crest area. And we just received work from the Kern County Fire Department there are multiple injuries. There are multiple fires out there. Emergency responders are getting out there fast as they can we have crews on the scene as well but yes, there are fires out there as well as multiple injuries. This happened yesterday so the ground was already loose ends from this so its yet to be determined. How many holes they will find. And just Lawrence Karnow was. It is here in the eye he i know he wants to talk to as well. Yeah, im just wondering about the actual shock did you actually feel the shock of the primary wave coming through first that ruling feeling and then a really got going after that. Most epic. What here a long time. In 1950s we have an earthquake in bakersfield, but. Ok just heard something. I did just heard your something out there that we heard it heard it. And yet the care or not surprised that youre to this alissa well, we know that theres been Something Like 1400. Aftershocks are a lot of a big one so youve been feeling that the last couple of days. The one this morning, the 5. 4 and our morning show crew felt that i slept through that some people actually did wake up. And so our chances are lower the farther that you get away from the epicenter, youre not going to feel it is strongly so the fact that were feeling this as strong as we did tonight. I can only imagine what the people in ridgecrest must feel because a lot of us here at the station actually feel kind of im not seeing and feeling. Huge us its something you cannot. From you and im telling you weve got received phone calls i to the station here somewhat 350 miles away. Of people who felt it here and were hearing reports that was felt as far away as mexico, las vegas. And you know appear in day. Yeah this thing packed a punch. Today we heard san diego i had not heard mexico so. Indeed i folks that were in Orange County messaging me saying that they were shook up about this sand and south. So yes. Obviously we have crews are heading to the scene everybody instantly made their way back to the station we thought we were done for the night and guess what we will be out here all night as long as this thing keeps going. You mentioned this was your first quake. And you can study this you know and intellectually understand it but to actually experience it for those who have never felt the quake. How would you compare it to just as the theory of a quake as opposed to really feeling it. Its almost a roller coaster feeling thats what it felt like a i it is yes, youre right. The study this and the textbooks really cannot her for you to go through Something Like this i think until you actually got through we can tell people is meteorologist too high that Emergency Preparedness kit ready to know what to do to go stand in the doorways to of course a hide under the desks but i think sometimes we get complacent and until you actually go through it, i know people here in bakersfield are now taking us a lot more seriously and i think statewide they will be too. As you mentioned your brz than we are a little rattled by this so im sure now everyone will be definitely on our guard maybe will be heating any sort of warning for an earthquake or just to be prepared early march. Carson dont go too far away, i know were going to be talking to you again again as the chief meteorologist at k g e t and quite an experience for you and a in bakersfield, a lot of people a lot of people in this area and far beyond feeling this thing. Thank you melissa were going to take a quick break will be back in just a mess. A lot of sizeable aftershocks. What would happen if a 6. 4 hit the bay area. Kron ons theresa talk to a u c berkeley scientists, 6. 4 quake thats a pretty substantial earthquake. So you can expect to see some pretty strong shaking from italy if the forward to her. Sure in the bay area under one of the major cities. For example, San Francisco to east bay. So we can expect to see some damage to buildings. And africas make damage in and it would certainly be. To a 7. 1 and theyre calling the earthquake yesterday on the 4th of july the 6. 4 which was still big enough to cause damage. The foreshock and tonights earthquake was the main event 7. 1 the biggest earthquake a foot by far in a number of years in fact bigger than the loma prieta that struck the bay area in 1989 that was a 6. 9 in the northridge earthquake that struck Southern California and killed 57 people that was a 6. 7. The good news if there is any is that this is a fairly remote area in the town of ridgecrest is
