A small crowd of guests at the green room of San Franciscos Veterans Building welcomed actor and humanitarian danny glover to a conversation with the San FranciscoHuman Rights Commission. He had plenty to say about how art including movies and plays has helped the advancement of civil and human rights over the decades. Its always when we the radical moments when we push the deal and push the envelope that things will change. Art has a role to play in that. He cited an example of a play that referenced the process of desegregation six years abefore brown vs. The board of education. Human Rights Commission executive director sheryl davis says it made sense to have glover come to the event because hes local, and a global ambassador at the same time. During the conversation with him davis pointed out how easy it is for people to do something to advance human rights. You dont necessarily have to be standing in a protest line, you dont necessarily have to go to city hall, but theres a way to have your voice elevated and to be able to share and engage in the conversation. Glover, who grew up in San Franciscos haightashbury district, still travels on behalf of unicef regularly. But even at home, he thinks there are very simple violations of human rights that often get overlooked as such, like the lack of affordable housing. The whole idea of gentrification isnt that a violation . Why do they say that . Isnt that some sort of violation of peoples right to exist . It seemed glover would have loved to stay and chat longer, but he wrapped up with this final idea. We have to look at it in all of its manifestations, not just necessarily the most egregious and the most glaring example of human rights.
