Tonight, firefighters were out again near the Oakmont Community in Sonoma County. They are trying to stop a fire spreading to four. Charles is live along highway 12 just off cough road. Tell us what youre seeing. Theyve been on the edge for quite some time. Reporter they have, the oakmont fire kicked up a few days ago, over the weekend separate from the other fires. If you look on the ridge behind me here up by Hood Mountain state park, thats the oakmont fire, burning and steep rugged terrain. Lets take a look at video for a closer look. This fire, its moved to the north, some other fires are burning to the north at a moderate pace. Firefighters made Good Progress for the last few days. They said at the press conference they are fighting pockets of fire in re spot acres remote acres. They are concerned highway 12 between santa rosa and sonoma is closed, but it is busy with activity there. Are fire crews from all over the state, over the west, going back and forth. Ive seen crews looking for any hot spots where embers might have started a new fire down closer to the road, so they are actively fighting the fire. There are bulldozers trying to get containment lines, they did say at the briefing the fire had jumped the bulldozer lines, but they were able to get in there and get those fires out that resulted an extra 30 acres burning. But building farther dozer lines to try to contain all of this. Finally, you may heard there is moisture in the forecast, but there was concern that what might happen is if a small amount of rain, lets say less than a quarter inch moves in, that cloud cover, the storm clouds could prevents aircraft from flying over the fires, and dropping retardant, so rain storm that doesnt drop a lot of rain could be a problem and allow the fires to grow faster. So theyre hoping it will be a lot of rain or no rain at all so they could use the aircraft. An incredible story out of napa where one woman went on a mission to save her familys home and winery. With the help of a volunteer firefighter, the home was spared. Spencer blake is live from the surviving winery. Reporter lets go back to last week at the point where most people had evacuated, including the pattis family, on dry creek road. They evacuated because they saw flames coming over the hill on sunday, and to put this in perspective, this winery sit between the patrick fire, and atlas peak. They could see the fires encroaching on their property. They did get out, but later, on friday, alexis, one of the daughter of the family, she decided you know what . I need to go back, im going to get some valuables, and she happened to get a call from someone who said they had sales rep with fire retardant meant for homes, and she could pick it up. She went to sonoma to meet had a man with the retardant, and he gave her that property saving chemical. He came up with me, helped me block vents in case embers got in the area, blackout the certain trees that were kind of near the house that might be problems, if the fire got near, he helped my buy a chainsaw, and cut down certain tree branches that might be a problem. Reporter they put that retardant on strategic points in the house. There are still flames fairly close to here, even tonight, so the family is staying in san francisco, but the house, the vineyard, everythings standing and James Anderson, thats the guardian angel, he offered that night to stay when things were really starting to get scary. He spent the nice in his truck, and watched over the whole vineyard to make sure there werent any problems, and he could do what he could to save t they didnt have any flames coming in here. We havent been able to reach James Anderson to have him share what happened, but we do know hes jest one of many of the dogoodies who see a need during the fire storm and meet it. We love hearing those stories. Coming up, we get an up close look at the damage of a home in santa rosa. And how a retired firefighter, well, he made a big difference. Were back in just two minutes. Grant . steve grants is live from Finley Community center. He has this story for us. Grant . Reporter pam, we were in coffee park, were at the Evacuation Center where so many folks are still here so many folks in limbo. Weve had a team of reporters here sings early monday morning when the fire was raging here in santa rosa, and jr stone, you were able to talk to a couple of people today who just, you were telling me the story. A wild, crazy, there are so many like these, but insane story how they escaped, and they lost everything. They lived on 187 acres. They had a vineyard, but their home was the main setup on the vineyard, and i do want to get straight to some photos, because you can see the before, you can see the after. It was a total loss. They havent even been able to go back to their home because its an area thats closed off, still under evacuations and this first photo, you can see what this home looked like with the pool in the back area, and then on the lower part of it, you can see what it looks like today. Totally devastating. They knew a firefighter who was in this area, and it was that firefighter who was able to take photos to show them what it looked like. You see one of the all terrain vehicles, thats the polaris, thats what they used to cruise over the property, they were able to make it to the road, got in the car, took off, but the polaris burned in this as well, and some of the other photos you see on here are just total destruction. Theyve only had this area for four years, so it was something they worked so hard to build. Its called a peace land vineyards. They dont know if the grape vines survived or whatnot, but they did survive. Their animals survived, but they talked about what they went through last sunday night. This is what they had to say. Yeah, it was hell on earth. Embers were the size of your fist. The winds are going every which way. I dont believe it was 30 miles an hour, because we were at the of the mountain, and felt like 70. It was like the mountain was red. Like a stoplight. And it was like really 10 miles, and seemed like a mile or so, and we were frantic. Reporter back out live, you know, you heard it in their own words, and grant, you talked about it before. They told me it felt like something, felt like they werent on this planet. If that makes accepts. Its just 9 miles from where were standing and you just shake your head. Do you know if thursdays going to try to rebuild the winery and the house . Theyre going to rebuild, and be bigger, stronger, and theyre going to try to make it better. Keep in mind, there were other people in airbnb on their property. They ran up there, those people were getting their items and packing and, rj, who he talked with, said no time for packing. We have to go now and in the rearview mirror, that was when they saw the flames. Did they take the dogs on the allterrain vehicle . The polaris . I believe they did. They had a chicken coop, left it open in hopes the animals could get out, they got the dogs out, but they have handicap issues, so they were able they were right there, but nevertheless, theyre cruising down the property, 187 acres just to get out, and thats what they went through. One of the words you hear people use over and over is apocket rich particular. Its so a were going to show it at 9 00, is some embers you could see from the surveillance cameras that were still set up after they left the home. So well show that to you as well. The wind whipping the embers, thanks for that story. Pam, steve, now back to you in the studio. Grant, thanks so much. From the very beginning, weather played a crucial role in this. Were talking about the fire season. Its usually lasting until the first rain. Are we going to get the big rain . Were just looking at showers moving by, but the best news was not seeing the real gusty winds. In fact, in the last 6 hours, you can see the winds just blowing 57 miles per hour, and starting to calm down in places like sonoma, petaluma, napa, the winds not blustery at all. Thats good news for firefighters and its going to get better. I think well see more of a sea breeze the next 24 hours. It is very dry, 24 relative humidity. 26 in sonoma, 27 in napa. But well see the sea breathe starting to kick in as early as tomorrow afternoon, and that changes everything. You can see the influx off the pacific. That brings the humidity level downtown 61 . Santa rosa, its starting to rise inland. Youll see the cool breeze bringing the moist air in. I think improving firefights conditions, if we get that rain, that will be a big help. The air quality, its going to be unhealthy for another day in the north bay. Around the rest of the bay area, moderate conditions, but that should improve as we see the stronger sea breeze the next couple of days. Not only here, lot of that air making into the central valley, the sound part of the san joaquin. Looks like High Pressure is going to take care of things. The ridge will weaken. Then it moves out of the way, and here comes the sea breeze just in time to clear out the air, and see some moisture coming down from the gulf of alaska. Well have more in a few minutes. Well be right back, much more news ahead. Before you do any project big or small, pg e will come out and mark your gas and electric lines so you dont hit them when you dig. Call 811 before you dig, and make sure that you and your neighbors are safe. E service to keep 811 is available tsiness homeowr our community safe. I was i was, i decided id go up and visit, and noticed the cats were in crates, so i asked them why, and they said, they decided on their own they would crate the cats. Weve had people bring in therapy dogs which are great. Reporter how are People Holding up . There are some folks that evacuated and were allowed back, and had to evacuate again. Emotionally and mentally, its challenging. I talked to a family this morning who had been evacuated from their home and im sorry, i dont know what neighborhood it was, but they had been evacuated and gone for a week. They survived on their own, i think stayed in a motel. They had gone back home, and thousand, whoo at over, and earlier, they were evacuated again this morning. So they showed up and asked for help because i think that was just the final straw. We were able to give them help, fema has been right here on site. So fema registered there. We actually have volunteers here who are Mental Health professionals, so who can talk to people, and give them hints about coping with this, how to talk to your kids. Reporter i think the shock has worn off maybe . And reality is sinking in in. Yeah, im sure thats true. Its incredible, the way some people have reacted. Ive met people volunteering here, like sorting all the clothes donations weve gotten who after i started talking to them, tell me they lost everything they owned and theyre here helping other people.
