Pam we are learning more about a shocking turn in the pier 14 murder. The gun used to kill 32 year old kate steinle lastg week. Was stolen from a federal agent. Pam a friend of steinles is speaking out tonight. Upset with all of the finger pointing going on between officials. Kron4s jr stone is live at pier 14 and he will have more on that. Pam but first grant lodes joins us with more about the murder weapon. Grant . X grant heres what we know about the gun a day after last weeks murder. Divers pulled a gun from the bay. Grant the suspect Francisco Sanchez has said he found the gun on the pier. Whether true or not, we now know where it came from. Grant the bureau of Land Management confirms that on june 27, 4 days before the murder, one of its Law Enforcement rangers had his government issued semi automatic handgun stolen from his vehicle in San Francisco. Grant and Law Enforcement sources say that is the same gun used in the steinle murder the ranger was passing through the city on official business, though his actual destination was not released. Grant at some point though he stopped in the downtown area, and left his car unattended. Sometime between 6pm and midnight, someone broke into his car, through a rear window. And stole the gun grant the ranger immediately reported the theft. And as were learning more about the gun used. Were also hearing from the citys mayor. Grant ed lee. Outspoken and critical. Of sheriff Ross Mirkarimi for his role in releasing sanchez. Pam the sheriff has not responded since the mayors has announced a press conference to quote. Reporter pam, family members tell me their focus is on tomorrows funeral. Its on remembering kate. Past friends of kate say this has been a very difficult time. Reporter it has now been one week since kate steinle was killed. In that week undocumented immigrant Francisco Sanchez, has been charged with her murder sparking an immigration debate nationwide. As for steinles past friends they have been left to try and make sense of it all. Sot i dont think people really realize how small San Francisco really is the type of community it isthere is a lot of people who knew kate and who cared about kate. Reporter sam landrum knew kate for several years. In fact steinle held her Birthday Party at his union Street Restaurant ottimista a couple years back. He says kates death and what has followed has all been upsetting. Sot for me and i can speak for a lot of my acquaintances you know friends acquaintances who knew her quite honestly to be bluntwere pissed off and it makes you angry. Sot i hope mayor ed lee is listening and i hope some change happens with the city policiesill take a stand and say i dont believe that man should have ever been released and in a lot of cities he wouldnt have been. Before releasing someone from jail. Pam this was the countys previous policy before the trust act. Pam however, once the act was passed. The county stopped giving ice notice of who was released. The Alameda County sheriff says, it is important for ice to monitor who is released. Those officials know of criminal event in our country in which the men had access to all those files. To the community pam the sheriff also says his office has been working with ice on the federal priority enforcement program. Since it was estableished back in 2014 pam one week ago tonight. Reporter a child was killed, and her family did not want to see her aunt go to prison for it. Reporter loyresha gages family supported her throughout the entire trial. Gage was caring for her sisters 2 year old twins last august. Reporter as they were leaving the metreon theatre after answered a phone call while trying to Cross Mission street with the twins. Reporter after waiting for traffic to clear, gage and her niece, miyana gregory, stepped into the crosswalk. A little less than halfway aCross Mission street, gage realized her nephew was still on the curb and panicked. Reporter as she sprinted back to pick him up, a sedan barreled down mission, hitting miyana and taking her life. Reporter the entire incident took seconds. Gage cooperated with police, but was arrested for felony child endangerment resulting in death, and misdemeanor child endangerment. Reporter her lawyer says the decision to treat this tragic mistake like a crime only added to the pain and suffering the entire family experienced. Reporter the College Student had no previous convictions. Reporter and her family is elated she has now been aquitted. She faced up to 10 years in state prison. Pam in contra costa county, Health Officials have released the results of an investigation into why more than thirty children were sickened at a pool in antioch last month pam kron 4s Charles Clifford is live for us tonight in the antioch with details on the investigation and whats being done to keep this from happening again. Charles. Reporter county Health Official now believe those kids were exposed to highly concentrated amounts of chemicals that are present in almost every pool. Reporter this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc 7 news showing the of the antioch water park on the evening of june 18th. Thats when 34 children swimming in the sports pool. One of five pools at the park. Begin complaining of red, itchy eyes. Trouble breathing and sore throats. 17 kids were taken to the hospital for examination and the park was shut down as a precaution. The incident took county Health Officials by surprise. Reporter its just a very unusual situation. Its the first time weve heard Something Like this happening. Reporter on thursday, contra costa that they now believe a pump attached to the sports pool had stopped working for unknown reasons the night before the incident. For several hours two pool cleaning chemicals. Sodium hypochlorite and muriatic acid were pumped into a pipe attached to the malfunctioning pump. The next days as the kids swam in the pool, the pump was turned back on and the chemicals were injected into the water at higher concentrations than normal. They should sign of skin irriation that is consistent with chemical exposure. Reporter Health Services has now sent a list of recommendation to the city of antioch which operates the water park. They want the city to ensure that all water circulation equipment meets state regulations and is working as it was designed to. They also want the city to provide the staff at the park with additional training. The system might have malfunctioned in some way but there needs to be good human oversight to make sure that if something does malfunction its corrected in a timely fashion.
