The Israeli Military has told more than one million because a residence to leave their homes in advance of her their airstrikes and an expected ground operation in retaliation for last saturdays terror attacks from hamas. Reporter barrages of rockets are still flying into israel from gaza. The Prime Minister said this evening that israel is striking hamas with unprecedented might and that this is really campaign was only the beginning. The death toll continues to climb mostly now in gaza with more than 3100 People Killed on both sides in seven days of fighting. Reporter in the Northern Gaza Strip the beginning of a mass exodus. The streets are filled with confusion after israels military gave residents 24 hours to leave and relocate south. Homeless and hopeless. House and have nowhere to go. The israeli army kicked us out of our homes. We could not find food or water or anything. We are lost. Where do they want to throw us . In the streets . There are children and women. This is collective punishment. Why this silence in the face of all this suffering . Reporter families leave by car and others on foot carrying entire lives with them. We watched as they laughed. After the announcement by the israelis that the palestinians, more than one Million People, must leave gaza city and go to the south. If you are in the streets in gaza, some people are leaving. And if you go there there are people that cannot find cars to leave for the south. There is no transportation they can use. Now, gaza, the streets are empty. Reporter for nearly a week israel has pounded gaza with airstrikes reducing the streets to rubble and what is left is an empty wasteland. In the israeli siege has blocked suppes from entering the territory. The United Nations considers it impossible for us such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences. The United Nations strongly appeals for any such order to be rescinded. Reporter but israel is preparing for a ground assault in gaza for retribution of the hamas terror attacks and said it conducted raids today targeting militants. The evacuation was necessary. We are asking all the civilians in gaza city to go south of gaza. The reason is because we dont want to harm them. We are going to destroy hamas infrastructures, headquarters, military establishment and take this phenomena out of gaza. Reporter standing by him is the secretary of defense lloyd austin who reaffirmed unwavering american support. The United States will make sure that israel has what it needs to defend itself and israel has a right to protect its people. Reporter multiple shipments of u. S. Military aid has arrived. Antony blinken embarked on a tour of arab countries. This morning in jordan he met with the king and the Palestinian Authority president. Later in qatar he spoke about the hostages taken by hamas in saturdays attacks. President biden spoke today with the families of the american hostages which he addressed this afternoon. Going through agony not knowing the status of their family, their husbands, wives and children. It is gutwrenching. I assured them to do Everything Possible to return them. Reporter around the world jewish institutions are on high alert after a former hamas leader called for a day of rage against israel. In beijing and Israeli Embassy was stabbed in broad daylight. And across the muslim world massive protests. From turkey to iran and yemen, residents took to the streets in support of the palestinians. At the heart of the conflict in jerusalem the city expected to see some of the fiercest violence during friday prayers but it was almost business as usual. The Young Palestinian men were nowhere to be seen. The authorities have put a ban on Young Palestinian men entering the compound. Many tried but were turned away. Clashes broke out. Reporter a 35yearold jerusalem bus driver who was determined to pray at the mosque on friday decided to come and try. I tried to come in. They asked me for my id. They said i could not get in. Reporter he says since saturdays horrific attacks suspicion is on the rise and the city. There is so much tension. [speaking another language] reporter the compound, one of the holiest sites in islam is set among some of the holiest jewish sites has been a flashpoint for conflict in recent years. And retaliation. It is one of the stated goals of hamas. There were altercations and teargas was fired by Israeli Security forces but with only very young and elderly men inside the expected clashes were avoided. But just outside in a neighborhood, clashes broke out as some young men refused to accept the ban. Police fired tear gas into residential streets as a residence watched on unable to get home. A few hours later calm was restored but on the winding roads into the occupied west bank the fires of rage have been burning since morning. Major reinforcements to idf checkpoints were brought in. There was no way in or out. By midafternoon rage had exploded. Protests have broken out in palestinian towns across the west bank. We can hear teargas going off in ramallah. People are screaming and protesting and this is where the israel difference force has set up a barricade to stop palestinians from getting out of town. Smoke rises from almost every village. Tensions erupting behind locked doors. Later in the day violence follows us. Two teenage boys were killed and clashes with the Security Forces. Rockets fall and guns fire, the drums of all out war sound closer by the minute. Amna i am joined by our reporter here in tel aviv. Lets start with what you did not see. Many people here were bracing for higher levels of violence than what we saw. What did you hear from people about why we did not see that violence . We were in jerusalem where everyone expected that flashpoint of violence. The Security Forces imposed a ban on any men between 18 and 40. That worked. There was a small group who tried to rush Security Forces and they were pushed back. Other than that, people backed away. It is a sign that people are really scared. They have seen what has happened and gaza. And it feeds into israels campaign because if they can separate palestinians from each other, that helps them hugely because they can perhaps convince people in the west bank to remain calm. We will see how that goes. Later in the day we did see more violence. People were getting very angry as they were locked into towns. And the Palestinian Health ministry has just confirmed that 14 palestinians have died today and there were 300 clashes. Amna we also saw news today of israeli officials or during the evacuation of over a Million People in gaza. We assume it is ahead of some count of ground incursion. How do a Million People move . They try but they dont and certainly not in that amount of time. Israel was trying to give a warning and trying to protect themselves. The other thing that is interesting is the solution possibly is egypt. There is a crossing where you can come out from gaza into egypt. They could facilitate an evacuation through that. They could take these people but politically they dont want to take on the palestinian cause. But if israel is able to push down too many civilians on that border it would be incredibly difficult for egypt to refuse to take them if they are running from war and there are wounded women and children. That is possibly a strategic calculation by the israelis to create a flashpoint for each of cannot say no. In the meantime, absolutely horrific scenes with roads bound everywhere. They dont have fuel because of the siege. The hospitals already cannot cope. Electricity is out across gaza. They dont have generators. They are dealing with so many wounded people. If they had to evacuate the hospitals from half the gaza strip and everyone has to go to the other area, that hospital is already overwhelmed. Ive been getting desperate calls from people all day. How can we get there . Just trying to find a way to have arcuate. And they have not got support inside. Amna our reporter joining us again here in tel aviv. Geoff as we saw in the report, lloyd austin made a quick day trip to israel today from nato meetings in brussels. The second u. S. Cabinet official in as many days to visit. Our Nick Schifrin traveled with lloyd austin and spoke with as really officials also. He is back in brussels. What did secretary austin want to communicate with this trip . Reporter he certainly wanted to show u. S. Support to israel as you said, one day after Antony Blinken did the same. He got an Operational Update on what appears to be the imminent Ground Invasion into gaza by israel. We went into the basement of the ministry of defense. He pledged his support. He also voiced a note of caution that was first made by President Biden saying that israel, unlike a mosque, needed to consider gaza civilians. The president also underscored that democracies like ours are stronger and more secure when we uphold the laws of war. Terrorists like hamas deliberately target civilians. But democracies do not. This is a time for resolve and not revenge. Her purpose and not panic. For purpose and not panic. And for security not surrender. Reporter a clear message to israelis who when they speak to us are using that word desiring the Israeli Government to achieve that word in gaza over the coming days. Lloyd austin also brought up his time as commander of the counter isis mission and he said despite heavy fighting, despite isis fighters embedding into the civilian population, his troops were able to create humanitarian corridors for civilians and that is what the u. S. Wants to say. Geoff what did u. S. Officials tell you . Reporter the primary thing they told us was how grateful they were for austins a visit and President Bidens full throated support of israel and for the largest u. S. Aircraft carrier in the world, the uss ford which is parked off israel right now. They see that as incredibly important and an effective deterrent against Lebanese Hezbollah and iran helping israel avoid having to fight on two separate fronts. The senior official told me that with the coming Ground Invasion of gaza will be Something Different and outofthebox. He would give no details. In 2014i was reporting inside gaza and saw how israel struggled to achieve its goals in what was a limited incursion back then. The encouraging is expected in the coming days and will have greater goals than what they have done in the past. As for the evacuation order, the senior official said there was no 24hour deadline as the u. N. Reported but he was dismissive and of any humanitarian concerns in relation to that movement of 1. 1 million gazans to the south saying that is the problem of hamas. We are at war. Geoff you also visited a military base in southern israel where the u. S. Is flying in weapons. What did you see their . Reporter this is the airbase that the secretary, lloyd austin visited. 40 miles east of gaza in israels southern desert. Lloyd austin met with u. S. Troops and walked with the minister of defense and saw the second aircraft of u. S. Weapons have arrived in israel. It arrived earlier today. The u. S. Is sending a series of weapons most notably i earned him emissions expecting the hamas rockets to continue and small diameter bombs designed to be more precise and therefore cause fewer civilian casualties. What are known as the jdam kits which turned older bombs into precision guided munitions and critical ammunition that israeli soldiers. The senior official told me that most of the Weapons Systems arriving are for in ks a second front is opened and that is the u. S. And is really focused right now to prevent the second front from opening and trying to contain the conflict to israel and hamas. U. S. Officials described a nightmare scenario. Not only israel fighting on multiple fronts but violence spilling and other countries across the region and that would threaten u. S. Goals, normalizing relations between israel and saudi arabia and keeping the region calm. At this point u. S. Officials are just trying to make sure that the fire does not spread. Geoff Nick Schifrin, reporting for us from brussels. Thank you. Geoff in the days other headlines, Health Care Unions reached a tentative agreement with Kaiser Permanente after a strike over wages and staffing. 75,000 workers last week walked out for three days across multiple states. We are at the point in those process where we are looking for one thing only, a deal. A tentative agreement. Geoff the strike started a month ago at ford, General Motors and stellantis plants and more than 34,000 workers have walked off the job. U. S. Tomorrow is the referendum and if approved it would be the first time the countrys constitution will be amended since 1977. Crying is cost nothing. Thinking of others costs nothing. This is a time when australians have the opportunity to show the generosity of spirit that i see in the australian character where at the worst of times we always see the best of the ongoing character. It has not been properly explained and it is divisive and permanent once it goes into the constitution. I dont think that millions of australians will support this. Quite the opposite. Geoff indigenous australians comprise just under 4 of the countrys population. Preelection polls suggest the amendment will be rejected. Geoff House Republicans have a new nominee for a speaker at after Kevin Mccarthy was ousted and less than 24 hours after their last stepped aside. Jim jordan got enough votes in the behind closed doors meeting of the gop conference but it is unclear if he can get the 217 votes needed to win on the house floor. Lisa desjardins joins us from the capital with the latest. What happened now that jim jordan is the nominee with dust a couple of days ago when it was just a couple days ago that Steve Scalise beat jim jordan for the nomination . Reporter candidacy collapsed on the perilous held that is the Republican Party and another has arisen to attempt to climb the hill. Jim jordan from ohio. Jordan is known especially as someone who is a fighter, pugilistic in style. He led some of the efforts to investigate president joe biden. He is a former champion wrestler. He is very popular with the base and is an ally of donald trump. What was surprising today as that he had a challenger. Someone that no one expected including the challenger himself, austin scott from georgia. He has been here since 2011. He said he woke up this morning and did not think he would run for speaker but as a mccarthy ally he wanted to give others an option. His strategy is confusing. I want to talk about the math. Can jim jordan become speaker . Jim jordan versus boston scott. Jim jordan got 124 votes. Scott got 81. Austin scott was able to get 81. A second ballot. Will you support jim jordan, yes or no on a floor vote. His number went up to 182. 55 republicans said they would not support jim jordan. You need somewhere around 217 votes to become speaker. Jim jordan has a big hill to climb again and the math is tough. Geoff i know you have been talking to republican members of congress. What did they say . Reporter this congress is looking for direction. They are going in different directions. I think jim should be given a shot. There were two candidates that self identified. They both stepped forward. If he can get to 217 he should be given the opportunity to try to get there. I am back with Kevin Mccarthy. Of all the folks in the ring, he is head and shoulders above the rest. Just like never donald trump, never kevin, never anyone is not a good way to go. I am for working out the issues. If someone gets the majority of the votes my expectation is that everyone in the party should realize there is a national imperative of security to put someone in that seat. Reporter House Republicans went home for the weekend. Jim jordan has to make calls to make up the gap. A vote for speaker could happen on the house floor on monday and the theory is that his team wants to try out a vote on the floor to see what happens. Why did they leave . We asked Patrick Mchenry and he said only one thing, it has been a long two weeks. Geoff we will check back in with you on monday. Thank you. Geoff juris have convicted one why Colorado Police officer and acquitted another in the first of three trials stemming from the death of a 23yearold black man. Elijah mcclain was unarmed when walking home and was wearing a face mask because of a blood disorder that made him feel cold. A driver called policing he was acting suspiciously, officers arrived and forcefully restrain him. The use of force set other events in motion leading to macleans death. The case became a National Focal point on policing and justice. Reporter officers put mclean in a choke that caused him to lose consciousness. Nearly 20 minutes later paramedics injected him with a sedative. His heart stopped and he died and a hospital several days later. Yesterday and the first of three trials officer randy was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and thirddegree assault. A second former officer, jason was acquitted. Last night macleans mother exited the courtroom later telling reporters that those sole conviction was not adequate justice. Juliet is a reporter for the Denver Gazette who has been covering the trial. Thank you for being here. You were in the courtroom when the mixed verdict came down. Can you give us a sense of the reaction, how did people respond . There was a lot of emotion on both sides of the aisle. As you already mentioned, Elijah Mcclains mom was dismayed by the verdict. I heard a couple of tasks from a supporter gasps from a supporter of his mother. When the verdict was read out. There was also a lot of emotion from people who appeared to be family members of the defendants in the courtroom as well. And the judge had asked people to refrain from any outbursts knowing it was a really emotionally charged case. But there s definitely a lot of palpable emotions from both sides. Geoff can you tell us more about the states case how did they argue that these officers were complicit in his death . The crux of the argument was that the officers chose to use force at every stage of the encounter rather than deescalate the situation. They argued that the officers ignored Elijah Mcclains repeated cries that he could not breathe. They did not monitor his pulse or his breathing. That they did not tell the paramedics called to the scene that Elijah Mcclain was struggling to breathe and that he had been vomiting. And instead they told the paramedics things like he was acting crazy and showing extreme strength. The prosecutors also brought in experts who said the struggle with pulleys led to a cycle police led to a cycle of Health Complications for Elijah Mcclain taking him more vulnerable to the injection. Geoff the defense did not choose to bring any witnesses and they argued it was the injection of the sedative that was the principal reason for his death. That is right. And Something Else the Defense Attorneys latched onto as the prosecutors presented their case was that the medical experts brought by the Attorney Generals Office really were mixed in how definitive their opinions were on whether they felt the actions of the officers actually contributed to Elijah Mcclains death. Geoff and it is worth noting that timing. We are talking about a young man that died almost four years ago. What is it why did it take so long . What brought the case to trial . In the wake of everything we saw in 2020, the governor of colorado asked the state attorney general to take a look at the case and so the attorney general convened a grand jury statewide who ultimately rocked back and indictment b br ought back and indictment of the officers and the paramedics in 2021. About two years after Elijah Mcclains death and a little over two years ago now. Geoff we know that jury selection is underway for the trial of the third officer in the case. Who is that and what is that officer being accused of . His name is nathan and he is accused of being the first officer to actually stop Elijah Mcclain. And he is also accused of being officer who used the neck hold on Elijah Mcclain that caused him to briefly lose consciousness. He faces a charge of reckless manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. Jury selection began today in his case. His trial is expected to last a couple weeks as well. Geoff that is julia from the Denver Gazette. Thank you for your time. Geoff the war between israel and hamas is at the forefront of american politics as President Biden pledges to provide aid and support to israel. For more we turn to the analysis of the New York Times columnist david brooks and jonathan as associate editor of the washington post. President bidens deep emotional reaction to the hamas terror attacks has translated into a forceful american response and defense of israel. He seems to be navigating the line that he understands the necessity of israels overwhelming retaliation but he is also saying he sees the importance of sparing the lives of civilians and making sure that israel adheres to the rules of war. I thought this was one of joe bidens best weeks as president. He was a voice of moral clarity. He reminded people of what hamas looked like. And he did it in the face of divisions on the left. A lot of mainstream liberals are appalled by what has happened all others think this is a legitimate part of decolonization. Joe biden has been doing this for a long time. And he knows that this is a case of someone or a group that wants to destroy israel and push the jews into the sea. He is making the keys that ukraine and israel in the war against thomas and Vladimir Putin are joined. And i think he sees that clearly. I thought it was a marvelous display of moral clarity and real storytelling for a guy whom rhetoric is not always a great gift. Geoff moral clarity and grand storytelling. What is your assessment . I agree with david 100 and it is not just a president but also the secretary of state who spoke from the heart next to the Prime Minister. And the secretary lloyd austin being there earlier in the day today also showing solidarity. What happened a week ago tonight or tomorrow is really it is beyond disturbing. And i just feel compelled, as an africanamerican, i understand the ancestral pain and terror felt by my jewish friends and jews around the world by what happened. What hamas did was not the usual middle east back and forth. This was barbaric. I understand and feel the pain and the carnage and barbarism need to be addressed. I also grieve for the innocent palestinians who have been used and are being used as human shields by hamas. Terrorists living among them who could not care less about their lives and could not care less about the rules of war. Their leadership is it living in gaza right now . Do they even care that the people at a been told to evacuate have nowhere to go . We are in a completely different time now when we are talking about complexes in the middle east. What we see in the coming days will be unlike anything we have ever seen and it will tear out our hearts. Geoff and there are no doubt farreaching foreignpolicy consequences. President bidens efforts to shepherd a normalization of relations between israel and saudi arabia that could revamp the geopolitics of the middle east appears to be stalled at best. How might this israelhamas war resonate beyond the borders . I just want to appreciate jonathans comments. The history of judaism is at the history of hiding in homes all people come and try to kill you and burn you down. That goes back to the exiles thousands of years ago and the pograms and the holocaust. The whole point of the state of israel was that would not happen again. And it happened and it touches something very deep in the jewish concept jewish consequence and i understand why the israelis are so up in arms and want to be so aggressive. One of the things that joe biden can tell israel as a friend and as someone who has offered unconditional love is that when we had our 9 11 and we did not react intelligently. And you have to think carefully about what you are walking into your eyes saw five or six different ways it could benefit the United States or the iraqis or the middle east. I confess that i look at this thing in gaza and i dont really see a positive extra exit strategy. I see urban warfare times 10. You have to stay there once you destroy hamas and how will that work . And so im hoping the Biden Administration will say, do what you have to to destroy hamas. One of the reasons hamas did this was to prevent the saudi arabiaisraeli alliance. So lets put that first. Geoff as we talk about the Biden Administrations response, his predecessor drew wide condemnation for faulting netanyahu and calling hezbollah very smart in his remarks. I will never forget that Bibi Netanyahu never let us down. It was a terrible think. And i hope hezbollah does not attack from the north. Hezbollah is very smart. They are all very smart. Geoff we can contrast that to what ron desantis and nikki haley had to say. Israel has a right to defend itself and that means do that to the help. You hav to the hilt. This is sick and we have to treat sick people in the way they deserve to be treated. Eliminate them. Geoff your response to what donald trump had to say. The clip you showed is exhibit number whatever it is of why he should never ever again entrusted with the power of responsibility that comes with sitting in the oval office. I am happy to be wrong about the reaction from the republican president ial field. I thought they would follow form and not criticize donald trump at all for fear of engendering the rage of their base but Governor Haley governor desantis, governor christie, former Vice President mike pence , most of them criticized donald trump and i applaud them for that but there is no way that guy should be president of United States again because of that clip alone. Geoff it is also aeminder that his isolationist views have really realigned the republican foreign policy. Everything is about donald trump. A thousand people get murdered and it is all about donald trump. It was a party of anticommunism. It was a party of an americanled world order. It was a party of containment of russia. And now it is the opposite. As i look at the Republican Party i want to make sure that they will fund ukraine. I think they should link ukraine age to israel aid ukraine aid to israel a and maybe the southern border aid. And nikki haley and governor desantis, in my heart i agree with their sentiments. Hamas has been a genocidal group from the start. But you have to be affective. Ive spoken on this program a few times and my son has served in the idf. His unit was hammered. They lost a lot of people because of intelligence failures on the is really side because they did not know what hamas was doing. The security fence was a hightech mess. It is easy to say, lets take out hamas but how does that work . A little loose talk from nikki haley and governor desantis, we have to figure out how it will actually work. Geoff lets talk about the House Speaker situation. By thursday Steve Scalise had dropped out of the election and today jim jordan has won the nomination but has no path to 217 votes. What ihappening . It is chaos and mayhem. And it is also pathetic. The speaker of the house is not just some person, it is a constitutional officer and third in my two the presidency. There will be no aid to ukraine or israel or board or anything in the United States unless and until there is a speaker of the house. And jim jordan is the guy that got us votes then Steve Scalise who got less votes then Kevin Mccarthy when he ran for speaker. I dont know who the next speaker will be unless the rubble in turn to unless the republicans turned to the democrats and say hakeem jeffries, you become speaker. Geoff there was an overcharge to traditional republicans offering a coalition government. There is a real path and a real opportunity to be serious, to be substantive and sober in meeting the needs of the American People and our allies like israel and ukraine across the world but we need traditional republicans to break from their extremist way and join us in a bipartisan coalition. Geoff it does not appear that he has any takers. Should that change . The sitting speaker has been approached by some moderate democrats saying we will approach you we will support you. That seems to be a reasonable solution. Geoff how do you think it will go . It will be a long time before we get to that moment. Give me my moment of hope, come on. [laughter] geoff thank you. Geoff Patrick Stewart cut his acting teeth in the ute are taking on numerous roles and shakespeare and other classics and for his second act was known to millions in the revival of the star trek franchises as well as Charles Xavier in the xmen films. Now he tells his own story in a new memoir sitting down with every brown with jeffrey brown. He would become one of the worlds bestknown actors. 31 has to start somewhere. Per patricks everyone has to start somewhere and for Patrick Stewart it happened when the teacher gave him the script for merchant of venice. Start reading. And we all went and he yelled at us. Not to your cells, you idiots. And then he said, this is a play. It is people. It is real life. It is not just being on a stage. You have to invite people into it. Some seven decades later he invites us into his own life drama in a memoir entitled making it so. There was something about having those words in my mouth that felt good. I felt i was in control. Reporter it gave you a self and a confidence. Exactly. What it gave me was that i could drop being Patrick Stewart. Reporter what does that mean . It means that i did not really like who i was and i felt much more comfortable when i was somebody else. Actually, the first time i walked onto a stage and breathed in, because i was nervous, i realized suddenly i felt safer then i have felt in any of my childhood years. I mean literally safe. Nothing bad can happen to me on this stage. Reporter as he writes the future captain of the Starship Enterprise grew up in a tough bluecollar town in the north of england without hot water or and indoor toilets. His first years were good ones but his fathers return from world war ii changed everything. His father, described as a weekend alcoholic, would beat his mother and Young Patrick could not protect her. There is a mixture of and strength that runs through your of wound and strength that runs through your life story. I feel that in my work and in important relationships. And i have benefited from it and also from 30 years ago when someone i knew quite well said to me have you ever thought of therapy, patrick . Psychological therapy . And i thought, why would i do that. Give it a shot. And i was hooked right away. And that has been one of the ways that i have two understand my life, my childhood, my father. Understand him because he made me angry and fearful when he was around. And he is one of the people i miss now because i would like him to read the book. Reporter Patrick Stewart would work his way up from local productions to the Royal Shakespeare company. He writes of lessons along the way including how great actors develop an invisible cloak of truth that elevates their performances. The actor is both pretending and not pretending . Patrick i dont like the word pretending although in a sense pretends is partly what we are activated to do when we are acting. But the people that you mentioned, their performance, work, it lives inside them. Reporter a lesson he learned when a director convinced him to take on a shakespearean monster in the winters tale. And she said, i think you are fearful about what you must understand is that this character already lives inside you. And i was outraged at that. And he said, but you are an actor. All you have to do is let it out. Reporter another level of pain would come in his late 40s. The actor strike continues so he asked us not to do not to use clips. But fans well know how he commanded those roles with his voice and presence. A Patrick Stewart knew nothing of this world when he first came to it. You are not star trek literate. Not remotely. And i was not a fan of scifi and i still struggle just a little bit. Reporter but you are saying that in these characters for a television and film that you were able to find the same way in as you did to shakespeare. The complexity. Patrick making sure that if the complexity was inside him, when i released it it would make sense. Reporter do yourself as well as the audience . Patrick always to myself but hopefully as often to the audience. That was always my objective. I wanted to bring the audience into our world. I was never that interested in thrusting it out. But just inviting people to come in and share what we were experiencing. Say i am happy. Reporter he took to the stage again working in a Samuel Beckett work. Patrick it requires connection.
