It is so difficult, we have incredible devastation, our beloved town is a graveyard. There is still over 1000 people missing. There is shock and trauma. There has been an enormous uprising of community to get supplies and medical care and taking care of basic needs. The team has been taking care of people but the entire community is taking care of one another so there is an incredible beauty. Geoff maui has been a magnet for tourists, but its a home with rich history. Is such a rich history. An agent fishpond had an island in the middle. Our first constitution was written there. Its a sacred area. Adjacent to that is the Cultural Center which burned to the ground and that was a place of solidarity. Many of us can trace genealogy back generations. Geoff there are survivors who say they are getting phone calls from investors who are trying to swoop in and buy land. How real is the fear that outsiders will try and cash in and change maui . Its a real fear because its already happened. Its not the maui of old, we have already been displaced by the plantation. The whaling industry, tourism, hyper development for outsiders. We are well aware of the threat for outside money influences coming in and further removing us, continuing a system of settler colonialism where the design is to destroy and replace it, its a real fear thats happening right now. Geoff how should natives focus the building effort . The administrations need to listen to the people, this is an opportunity to restore this to what it was. I have an elder who said he woke up and told me he dreamt we were planting seeds that were connected to medicines and things that make us hawaiian. That dream holds a future for us that we can gather around and work towards. Our hearts go out to you. Think you so much. Aloma. Aloha. Geoff ukraine resumed operations at ports after a night of russian drone slides. The attacks come weeks after ruia ended participation in a deal. Officials say 55 people were involved in clashes in tripoli and released late yesterday. Battles between militia members emptied the streets, it was the deadliest fighting in years after nearly a decade of civil war. The powerful explosion has claimed the lives of 25 people and 60 others were injured. The blast went off monday. Firefighters are working to extinguish the flames. The president vowed to get to the bottom of what happened. An investigation will be carried out to determine the origin of the terrible accident. In the meantime, its up to us to save the lives of those affected and we will do so without any limit of resources to save every life we can. Authorities are investigating claims that the building was operating illegally. Tony blinken spoke by phone with an american citizen wrongly detained. Cnn was forced to report the story. This is the second time the two have spoken. An Appeals Court ruled access should have access one change. The u. S. Supreme or ordered an oral order to keep it available while litigation continues. The Justice Department said it strongly disagrees. A prosecutor in kansas says police should return items during a raid on a local newspaper. Today marks the oneyear anniversary of resident right in signing the ration reduction act, the legislation includes measures to lower the cost of prescription drugs and create jobs among other things. In a white house ceremony, the president touted what he sees as the impact. Its one of the biggest drivers this country has ever seen. Were in all of america in the heartland and coasttocoast. I minute commitment. The president said the law will cut urban emissions and is already created 170,000 clean energy jobs. A former fundraiser for George Santos has been charged with wire fraud and identity theft. He is accused of scheming to defraud donors by impersonating a highranking aid to kevin mccarthy. Members of a Football Team speak about the opportunities and just facing that sport. Alexis is the pbs newshour. Geoff Inhumane Treatment has put out spotlight on migration. Laura joins us explain. Eagle pass is this keyboard or community. What are the conditions like . I spoke to Joaquin Castro, a Texas Democrat who went to eagle past to see the conditions, these tactics, this is what he said. They placed that traps, razor wire placed in a way that migrants could come up against the and not see it, traps. Two weeks ago there was a dead body found attached. The barrels he is talking about offloading barriers Governor Greg Abbott has placed on the rio grande that advocates have concern about because migrants have to cross these. There is sharp fencing that has been faced placed around areas. I spoke to a Texas Tribune order to said people are getting injured. A former border chief i spoke to said the fencing has been used in the past but these tactics are getting a lot of attention. Geoff yesterday, you reported about this letter from hispanic democrats demanding action. What are they calling for . Joaquin castro signed on to the letter directed towards Merrick Garland and aligned americas alondra mayorkas. They want to see serious action. Any of us were shocked and outraged when donald trump started separating families. Greg abbott is replicating a version of that and there were reports that these 26 families have been separated. We are asking the department of justice to make sure there is no federal funding that violate human, civil or legal rights. From the department of Homeland Security who say they should be an investigation but did not specify whether they will be investigating the separation of fathers from wives and children. On this issue, the doj has done that. Didnt they sue texas over the floating barrier . You are right, the Justice Department has taken action on the floating barriers. The interesting part about this is the Justice Department is saying they dont have the Legal Authority to place those barriers on the legal ground rio grande, and the territory is called the International Boundary on water commission. 80 of buoys it would be a violation of mexico sovereignty. Governor abbott said texas has the right to defend its borders. That is the reason for setting up the wiring and water barrier. They have been equating migrants for drug cartels. They say its bringing drugs and an active invasion. Invasion is the language he is using and that means he has the right to declare these declarations to place the floating barriers and what comes next is there is a Court Hearing next week where the court will consider the Justice Department lawsuit against the state of texas. s program has been in effect for two years area was the response . They say previously, there were a number of people in that Border Community that actually supported operation lone star. But since then, they have soured on the program and in particular, he spoke to a farmer who has private property there along the border and she told him she is not happy with this anymore. When she started seeing the wiring causing physical harm and emotional tolls, she started having second thoughts, particularly when she saw a pregnant woman trying to get through the wiring and no one was helping her. This is a republican who voted for abbott and is now having regrets of allowing this to implement the policy. Shes not the only one that told him she has regrets, there are other local elected officials who dont support it anymore because of the practices used by greg abbott. I also asked Joaquin Castro if he has been satisfied to everything i am a supporter of the president. So far, weve not heard directly from the white house about this call for more investigation. Thank you so much for that report. Japan will begin the process from the tsunami wrapped plant area final preparations are being made inside the facility. 12 years after the historic meltdowns remains a toxic waste site, upwards of 5000 workers are here every day innovating and orchestrating the most complicated Nuclear Cleanup in history. Its interesting to see it change quite a bit. My guide is a Nuclear Engineer who led the cleanup after the three mile island meltdown in 1979. He is now a paid consultant for fukushima. This is very similar. This is a multibillion dollar a year effort being spent at fukushima. Its going to take some time to complete this work. Will you live to see it . Probably not. We began our tour as close to the meltdown as humans can dare. The rusty frames of the structure, the original structure. They have the skill structure all the way around. Steel structure all the way around to be able to dig down. The ultimate goal melted steel and uranium with all of the radioactive isotopes. Not too far from us. You cant go in there. Catching even a fleeting glimpse is an extra ordinary challenge. Intense radiation renders them useless. The path is a treacherous labyrinth. Different. We were inside unit number five, unscathed by the disaster, the reactor is in your replica of the three that melted down. We are standing outside the pedestal. It was like being a mouse inside of an engine. A threedimensional maze suited by a contortionist. We are underneath the unit. These are the control rod mechanisms. Thats where the reactor is. This location 20 feet below is a concrete floor. This is where the piles sit, underwater. 40 or 50 beat above us. This is on the floor. The steady stream of contaminated water has created a problem. At first, they were generating between 130 and 160,000 gallons of radioactive water every day. In 2016, they completed the ice wall, a 300 million subterranean perimeter of pipes cold enough to freeze the story soil and keep much of the groundwater at bay. If you ask me, its not easy and water will continue to be contaminated. All about water sits in a tank. Almost 1100 tanks. How long would it take before they are not radioactive . Going to be many decades, but that is not possible. You can keep tilting tanks . They need to make room to safely contain debris that will be radioactive. You have to build a variety of facilities. Its essential at this stage we are now. Before that, it flows through Treatment Facilities designed to remove 100 radioactive isotopes. We had to add more protective clothing, if one of these pipes sprung a leak, the contamination risk will be very high. This is called the advanced liquid processing plant. Facilities can process about 300,000 gallons of water each day. Its a chemical process, not a nuclear process. I like that analogy. In chemistry terms, thats what it is. He out other isotopes. He says it removed 99. 99 . Trace levels with one exception. An isotope called tritium. Chemically, its water. Its a mildly radioactive form of hydrogen that occurs naturally, its luminescent. It reacts with oxygen just like regular hydrogen, creating water thats radioactive. Must being considered. The japanese government is planning to do the same. Fishermen nearby and other countries throughout the region. More on that we continue our series. I am miles obrien. Tapwater contain chemicals, there are thousands of these chemicals and exposure could lead to Serious Health effects. Last month, samples tested had one or more forever chemicals. The study found chemicals have been used in many everyday items since the 1940s from where to cosmetics. Widely used as a firefighting chemical. A manufacturer recently proposed a 10 billion settlement to address claims by hundreds of cities that want them held viable. Litigation continues and they will continue to make chemicals until 2025. I am joined by jimmy do it. Professor, there have been studies showing all of us have some level of this in our bodies. How much should we be worried about this . A large group of chemicals, about 14,000 chemicals associated with many diseases that take peoples lives. People should be concerned but also concerned about the chemicals in the environment that we experience in our life. Thats just it, there are so many chemicals we assume in the air, in the water. What makes it particularly toxic . You said they have been linked to certain cancers or disease, do we know that . Exposure is problematic because they are persistent, they last for a long time in the environment, maybe longer than any other chemical. They also tend to last for a long time inside of our bodies, giving them the opportunity to lead to those diseases they have been linked to kidney cancer, we call them multisystem toxicants because they can affect many different parts. There has to be high concentration do we know what communities in areas are at higher risk of exposure . We know people in areas with no can nomination have higher concentration in the body, in 2022, the National Academy came out with a report for Health Care Providers who might be treating people exposed and they have specific recommendations for elevated standards of care for patients who have concentrations greater then 20 nanograms in their blood. 20 nanograms is a small amount. They have taken several actions to highlight the dangers and Just Announced 5 billion in grant funding. How much cannot help . Some of these chemicals be banned outright . Efforts to limit are a good step forward. Even though if the technologies that offer that is implemented, those technologies also will work so its a good step forward there are some efforts in Different Countries in the European Union to phase out nonessential uses. Is there any athome technology the average person can use . Can you use water filters . There are some filters that do a decent job but you have to do very good. Those who can support it can be good at filtering, those are often out of reach. Professor of pharmacology and toxicology, thank you so much for joining us. Geoff its nearly 18 months since russia launched its invasion of you and, tens of thousands of people have died. Even before the total invasion, this has been going on for nearly a decade. We start spoke with the journalist. Its become clear that was known as the revolution. A subsequent landgrab, the kremlin provoked war. The fullscale invasion of ukraine. The survival of democracy and in ukraines resistance. Few americans have had more of a front row seat then christopher miller. He has been reporting for 13 years and just released a book, thank you. The book begins and ends in back mood. You arrived as a peace corps. He visited at some point in the last few months and then told friends the place you knew is gone forever. At the big question. Thats a country of millions of people, its an existential fight. This is a country filled with people i know who have become fighters if they have taken up arms, its a country that went from peace to war. One that is more proud. Ukrainians have always been prideful but no more so none right now, that they are more united than ever and i believe doing a good job of defending on the front lines. When you arrived, you write that people did not think kyiv cared very much about them. Do you think that provided an opening for putin . It did. And found some Fertile Ground to exploit which is why we saw some local ukrainians take up arms and join these forces and become a part of what the russians presented as a separatist uprising. That followed protests that you covered extensively, you are right about how those became so much more than what caused them, prorussian president deciding. How did those become much more about the identity . This was a revolution that began as a protest against the violence perpetrated by his security forces, this was a revolution that was bootstrapped using kitchen utensils, digging up paving stones. Its that spirit that became the volunteer forces and later military forces. You wrote that a senior official admitted to you that it was a really close call. It was as close as a couple of gates around the administration and a few cars moved in front of those gates to keep some special forces this was a lot of luck the russians bungled. They got lucky, they expected, the battle so the city is less time, what they look like . I visited mild Apartment Building digging, they are taking the moment. Belief that it could happen in world war ii style warfare. You quote a poem. I wont forgive anyone, we will overcome everything and endure. Does that mean the only justice ukrainian citys victory . Is difficult to think about any justice that does not see vladimir on trial, facing justice. They have lost soldiers, homes. Its too much to consider anything less than a victory. Thats what they have said and shown. Life in ukraine. Thank you very much. Geoff we will be back shortly with a look at successes and challenges facing a womans Football Team. First, take a moment to hear from pbs. For those of you staying with us, we reprise a story from earlier this summer that continues to resonate as india takes on questions that loom is how to feed 1. 4 lien people. Families say crops are withering , cycles of drought and pest infestations. The consultation is usually brief. When they get big, its a new prescription for insecticide. This is one of socalled Knowledge Centers set up by a Research Foundation to help with a married challenges brought on by the changing climate. Before, the quantity is much higher. Most farmers, and he does not have irrigation system to rely on rainfall and must deal with weather conditions. 10 years ago, rain has become very erratic. This too much rain. Sometimes it rains during the harvest. Its been unseasonably hot but to protect, to repel bugs. Veteran scientists. Its a twoway process. Understand where the issues are. The foundation was focused on resilience and therefore there has to be adaptation. Quotes a pediatrician was recently the World Health Organization chief scientist. She now chairs a foundation. Nearly 60 years ago, they use science to launch the green revolution, transformed india. However, the widespread use of synthetic pesticides has degraded soil quality forcing more disease. Towns now is to bring a balanced approach food production. The changes cannot be done in a way that compromises food reduction and selfsufficiency. Quotes help inform the best time to plant and how to diversify crops for income and improve nutrition, adding protein and vegetables. Today, everyone has a mobile phone, we have artificial intelligence, how do we see those benefit the most Small Farmers . Bugs he has benefited, he grows okra and for years tried to control paths with chemical products. Today, he has an organic coach. And, he has his own pis. We use more pesticides. Experts say the key challenge is to adapt and varying landscapes. Areas which were flood prone to becoming exasperating the challenges for lack of workers. To create employment, the government has emphasized manufacturing, trying to lower multinational companies. Its likely to accelerate the urbanization with profound impact on agricultural communities. We used plenty of people who work. Rural prosperity will be critical. Turning the traditional reverence for farmworker. If you dont have mud on your feet you will have food on your plate. Geoff his reporting is in partnership of a project at the university of st. Thomas in minnesota. Boston is a sport loving city. Earlier this summer they won the fifth straight title. Im ready. Fans love watching the boston renegades. When you say or meet a woman who lays football, you cant quite picture it. Cooling water. That excites me, there is an energy. Can you name . Unintentional sexism. Anytime i tell anyone, one of the Biggest Challenges is feeling validated. The renegades dont get paid a salary. Everyone has another job and make sacrifices so they can do this. Does not cover trial expenses. To overcome that and continue to play being an athlete, its not the easiest path. I think this will have fun, love and embrace the passion of the game. Do that. We do want to hurt each other. Geoff breaking late this evening, the North Carolina legislature has approved bills that restrict Transgender Athletes and ginger gender transition care. It limits the teaching of lgbtq issues in schools. Roy vito vetoed legislation but the supermajority overrode his veto. I am geoff bennett, thank you for spending part of your evening with us.
