It breaches chinas commitment that hong kongs autonomy. Laura pope francis is the latest world leader to ngratulate joe biden on his successful bid for the white house. Despite President Trumps refusal to concede defeat. Welcome to world news america on pbs and around the globe. The World Health Organization has sent a short and blunt morning warning. Countries battle a nd and third wave of the virus. The u. S. Is the worst affected country for deaths, ore than 240,000 people have died. More than 120,000 new cases identified every day. In the u. K. , more than 50,000 people have died. Lockdown restrictions have been in place for a week in britain at the government tries to clamp down on the virus. India is battling a winter searching cases. Delhi announced a new day record height yesterday. Russia is seen cases increased or medically. Increased dramatically. Hospitals are running out of beds. Our moscow correspondent sent this report. Tell them to stop cling for ambulances, the russian paramedic pleads. There is no one left here to respond. Just back from picking up one patient with covid, the team has already been called out again. They are taking precautions but many colleaguehave called in sick. Up this does not look like the victory over e virus russias politicians once claimed. A record surge in infections is hitting remote regions, like this one. Another ambulance has just arrived with medics and full ppe. Presumably more Covid Patients on board. There is a lot of activity at this hospital. A senior official said they are operating under extreme pressure. The number of new cases in this region is still rising. These were the scenes inside recently. A sudden increase in admissions. The sick left and accord doors, even on benches. In corridors, even on benches. In mask up, they are treating in moscow, they are treating Covid Patients with an ice drink. Ice rink. Cases are rising but there are far more resources. The chief dr. Is upbeat. We are fully prepared for this. We have plenty of reserves. I think it shows no excess directions or locked in will happen excess restrictions or lockdown will happen. There is no lockdo here either. There are lots of face masks. She does worry about getting coronavirus but she says she needs to come out to sell cabbages. Life here is a world away from the wealthy capital but the virus does not care. Nikolai is health worker, angry local officials did not use the summer to prepare for this. It makes your hair stand on end. Do not know where this is all going. This hospital has turned two floors into covid words. The second surge has only just begun. Here in the u. S. , we are seeing a surge in the virus with a Record Number of americans in hospital wednesday, 61,000. Running is now is the director of Global Health and emergency medicine at columbia university. What are you hearing from your colleagues in Emergency Rooms across america as the number of cases rises . I think what you said points out the fact that this is not something that is regionally or geographically isolated, like it has been. First, it was the northeast. Then the sunbelt, texas, florida. We have cases rising all over this country. We are setting records in new cases. This is what is unique about this phase of the pandemic. It is not geographicall isolated. It is happening everywhere at the same time. All of the indications are that it will get much, must much, much worse. We spoke in the spring. You are close to being overwhelmed. We had temporary morgues on the streets of new york. We are hearing of temporary morgues being placed outside. In we will be back to that number of deaths. It will be spread through a larger geographical area. We have more people hospitalized than we ever have. Both of those slopes are increasing very dramatically. We have already seen a number of deaths increase dramatically over the past few weeks and we will likely be seeing 2500 deaths a day in this country in the coming weeks. Add on the holidays on top of that, people indoors for the colder weather. There is no good reason to be optimistic that we will get this rus under control, especially since it does not appear the outgoing leadership seems very serious were concerned about getting this virus under control. Laura what sort of a Public Health message would you like to hear as we are only just a few days away from thanksgiving and people being on the move . People need to know that if you are going to be tting together with family, if your kids will be coming back from llege or if you are try if you are going to try to see people you have not seen in months, there will be a risk. Regardless of whether you have all gotten tested a few da before. Regardless of how badly we all want to be together. There is a high likelihood that someone who is going to be coming to that dinner table is going to be positive and will spread the virus. It is important, imperative at all of us take the right precautions. Think about how we do this safely if we are going to do it all. For anyone thinking about getting together with family, you need to start quarantining today, limiting your contacts. If we do not do so, it will only fuel and already raging pandemic across this country. Laura dr. Craig spencer, thank you. It is nine days since america went to the polls and five days since e biden was projected the winner. The pope became the latest global figure to congratulate mr. Biden on his victory. President trump still wont concede. His actions are his actions eroding Americas Court ability as a champion for democracy . That republican resistance to this result is starting to crumble. Marco rubio, the senator from florida, a future president ial aspirant, has congratulated joe biden. Another wellknown figure in america, the governor of ohio. He has said joe biden is th president elect. People like lindsey graham, such a close ally of donald trump, saying joe biden should be given access to the National Intelligence information that he is seeking. Such a key part of the transition. Another indication that the republican resistance is starting to crumble. Laura how much of that republican resistance has to do with the fact that in january, there will be two senate seats up for grabs in georgia and control of the u. S. Senate at stake . That is the focus. Of so many Party Activists on both sides. Trying to win those two crucial seats which could decide who holds the balance of power in the senate. The thinking is the republicans will end up with the majority. And Mitch Mcconnell will remain as the Senate Majority leader. It allows him to stymie whatever legislative program joe biden comes up with. A lot of this resistance is partly about mandate denial. The republican claims this election was stolen. When he comes forward with a legislative agenda, they can say to their base, he is not the real president. A lot of this is about delegitimizing his presidency and denying him a mandate. Laura World Leaders seem to be calling joe biden to congratulate him. Even if the president does not recognize him as the next leader. Today, obviously, he had a conversation with the pope. That is particularly significant for joe biden because he is the second Roman Catholic to ever win the presidency. The first was john kennedy. We are getting more insights about the thinking inside the white house. Talk of a possible run in 2024, which would be a tacit acknowledgment that they lost this. That the election was won by nefarious means even though donald trump has not been able to come up with any evidence. It may be the white house is starting to look beyond this election. Maybe there is an increasing sense within the white house, within the executive branch, that they have lost this election. Laura thank you for that analysis china has condemned the mass resignation of prodemocracy lawmakers in hong kong as a blatant challenge to its authority. Resignations are triggered by the expulsion of four lawmakers under new roles imposed by beijing. The British Government has summoned the chinese bassett or to express concern about ambassador to excess concern about the development. Hong kongs Legislative Council is without an effective opposition. Some final acts of defiance on our last day. [speaking foreign language] the entire prodemocracy bloc tendered their resignation. The communist Party Leadership has empowered the City Government to dismiss any opposition politician at will if they deem to show insufficient loyalty. For many, the autonomyong kong was promised decades to come has all but disappeared. We all know that. Because of the constitutional arrangement. Internationally, the move is being condemned as a sign that freedoms in hong kong have been eroded at an alarming rate. The new roles allowing hong kongs chief executive to secular applicable opponents were clear breach sack there opponents were a clear breach. We urge the relative individuals to stop interfering in chinas internal affairs. Any other attempt to pressure china will not succeed. From tomorrow, for the First Time Since hong kongs return to china, its Legislative Council will be without any effective opposition. It is unclear if they will ever have one again. The most crucial thing, the dismissal of the four legislators accused of showing insufficient loyalty to the motherland. A permanent change to the rules which means the communist parties surrogates can remove any undesirable opposition politician, even though they have been directly elected by the people. Laura democracy on the line in hong kong. The sixmonth old baby who survived the baby of about in the mediterranean has died. It was among the baby was among those saved. For these young men, there is relief. A bloody six week war is over. If this was if this continued, we would have all been killed. Armenia was given less than a week to vacate this land. Packing up and takg absolutely everything with him. He is stripping the house b are. He has even removed all the windows. I feel so much pain, you cannot imagine. I dont know where to go. I have seven children. I have no hope. Nearby, silent prayers in an armenian monastery. Within days, azerbaijan will control the town.
