Anger and suspicion are growing. Donald trump has just arrived at his rally in michigan, a state that he won in 2016 by a margin of just over 10,000 votes. A surgeon early votes suggests turnout could be at historic levels. 66 million votes have been cast so far, almost half the nber of the 2016 election already. Italians are on the streets for a second night to protest against stricter coronavirus restrictions as the country reports a Record Number of daily infections. We will be live. Two childrennd two adults have died after a migrant boat capsized back to reach the u. K. Todays events underline the risks that they are willing to go to, and strengthens our resolve to go after them. Welcome to our viewers on pbs in america and around the globe. We start in the u. S. , where the president ial election is one week away. President trump has notched a victory with his pick for the new Supreme Court justice, amy Coney Barrett, confirmed by the senate. We will have more on that shortly. First, both candidates have been campaigning in the states crucial to winning the election. President trump has started his Campaign Today at a rally in michigan before heading off to wisconsin and nebraska. Here is what he had to say before leaving washington. President trump we have a full day of rallies and they are very well attend, thousands and thousands at each one. Our poll numbers are phenomenal, our real poll numbers, not the fake numbers that the media gives. But real numbers are very strong. That was President Trump speaking before he left washington. Live pictures now from his rally in michigan. He has arrived. He won the state in 2016 by a narrow margin, just over 10,000 votes. Hell be speaking a little later on. We will bring you some of that if and when he arrives. Meanwhile, joe biden been speaking in georgia. Usually a staunchly republican state but there are some indications it could swing to mr. Biden this year because of changing demographics. Vice President Biden i say to you today, you give me the honor of serving as your president , clear the decks for action. We will act on the first day of my presidency to get covid under control. We will act to pass my economic plan that will finally reward work and not wealth in this country. We will act to pass my Health Care Plan and provide affordable, Accessible Health care for every american, and drug prices that are dramatically lower. Our correspondent gary o donahoe is in washington. One week to go, what are the messages the candidates are keen to get across . I think the president s team is quite keen to get him as firmly onto the economic agenda as possible. It is really the only area in the bowling or he has any kind of advantage over joe biden in terms of policy areas. You will see and hear a lot about that, particularly, as he swings through those upper midwest states, nebraska as we. In terms of joe biden, you heard him talking about covid. Covid is the issue that is not simply a part of the news cycle but a part of americans every day lives on the something that the president polls very badly on, the messaging has been difficult for a lot of americans to accept, swallow, when you hear the people like the chief of staff say that we cannot beat the pandemic, we are just going to go for vaccines and therapeutics. They are struggling with that message, and that is where you hear joe biden focusing on that so much. Dont forget, more than 8 million cases here. 230,000 people have died. We are in a weekly rolling average of around 70,000 sorry, about half a million cases. Around 70,000 a day. We are well into what you may call a third spike here. Thanks very much for that. We will be back with gary shortly a different issue happening in the u. S. Just want to bring you these live pictures. That was donald trump are arriving for his rally in michigan. He left washington earlier on, you heard him speaking about his poll numbers doing well, despite the poll numbers seemingly pointing in the opposite direction. It is always worth pointing out, pulling is not completely accurate, as americans will tell you about the 2016 election. Expectingim to speak there before heading off to wisconsin and nebraska. For the moment, we believe that there and go back to michigan as and when he gets up and starts speaking. A part of the changing demographics in the u. S. Is the growing latino population. Since donald trump was elected, nearly 4 million latinos have come of voting age. Many have watched as their communities were ripped apart by top immigration rules, devastated by the pandemic. Here is sophie in arizona. Sophie this is the level of some latinos dedication to their president. Latinos love trump. Sophie these restaurant tours certainly do. He is the right person to keep leaving this country. We need someone tough, someone with the right ideas. Donald trump is the perfect person for another four years. Sophie the threats to their business that follow their endorsement follow that not all latinos feel the same way. Latinos have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic that shut down this state. While the president s macho image may have impressed latino men, here in the heart of the knickss phoenixs latin community, it has caused deep damage to those who have been impacted by the virus. His disregard was really clear. For latino voters in particular, especially folks that know somebody who has been impacted, they felt the way that i felt. This man does not care about us. He doesnt care about us. President trump we will be protected by the great men and women of our military and Law Enforcement. Sophie with the election days away, campaign ads fill the airwaves, but so does misinformation that feeds peoples fears. Fear is a real thing in neighborhoods like this, where some may have led a country where people died because there is no law and order, yet they become increasingly fearful of Law Enforcement here, too. Just as the last four years have deepened divisions across the country, they have exposed divisions in latino communities. Around 4 million latinos have come of age in the last four years. They are determined use their new political power and spend their evenings encouraging others to do the same. We all remember 2016, feeling. I literally have goosebumps fig thinking about that day. I was not able to vote, so people were like, you didnt show up to vote. I couldnt. Sophie now in 2020, they can, and if enough latinos across arizona do the same, this time, their voice could really count. Sticking with the campaigning, barack obama has been in florida, stumping for his former vice president. He gave his assessment of the trump administrations handling of covid19, and he did not hold back. President obama here is the truth, that pandemic would have been challenging for any president , but this idea that somehow this white house has done anything but completely screw this thing up is nonsense. That was the former president barack obama speaking at an early voti rally. Early voting looks like it could play a significant role in this election. More than 66 million americans have voted so far, a Record Number. That is either by mailing in their ballots or at polling stations. That is almost half the total number of votes from 20 already, and it could mean that turnout will be higher in previous elections. In texas, 7. 8 million peop have already voted. This is what that looks like in north dakota and florida. Socially distanced lines of people waiting to cast their votes. Meanwhile, President Trumps pick for a new Supreme Court justice will be fully sworn in later today. Amy Coney Barrett taking her constitutional oath shortly after the senate voted to confirm her. She now has to swear a judicial oath before participating in the work of the court. Republicans have a majority in the senate and the vote was down party lines. Only one republican voted with democrats. The confirmation will cement a conservative majority of 63 on the court. Here she was speaking at the event. The oath that i have solemy taken tonight means at its core that i will do my job without any fear or favor, and that i will do so independently of both the political branches and of my own preferences. The speed of the confirmation means Justice Barrett could end up hearing cases related to the election itself, if the election is to court. Here is what joe biden had to say. I rushed an unprecedented confirmation as amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court in the middle of an ongoing election should be a stark reminder to every american that your vote matters. Lets go back to gary in washington. Whatever the result of this election, the future direction of the u. S. , in many ways, is set by this decision. Gary thats right. This significant majority for the conservative wing, 63 on the court, that should be around for a long time. Amy Coney Barrett is 48 years old. God willing she will be on the court for decades to come. Conservatives know that. They could lose the white hoe, the senate, be out of power entirely in the political branches but they would still have a number of judges at the federal level that they managed to appoint over the last four years, and this super majority on the Supreme Court. Those courts do make decisions about all sorts of day to day issues, be it social issues like gay marriage, other issues like abortion, choice, gun control, climate change, campaignfinance. Anything you can think of, the Supreme Court, at some point or another, has been asked to think about it. Thanks, gary. Two alts and two children aged five and eight have died after a boat carrying migrants have sunk. French officials sai18 people were rescued so far. They have been taken to hospitals. These are pictures of the Emergency Services the docks. Rescuers are said to be searching for one other person. The searchandrescue operation started earlier today after the vessel was seen in difficulty. Lets hear from the threat commander. Todays tragic events underline the risks that the facilitators are willing to go to, and strengthens our resolve to go after them and bring justice. Lets get more from hugh schofield. What more do you have of this . Early this morning, as you say, a british pleasure craft of some kind reported seeing a boat in difficulty,ot far off of the french coast. The French News Agency was saying semirigid hulls, somewhat inflatable. There is a rigid bit to it, but then they float outside, with a load of people on it, and was in difficulty. That triggered a massive rex you Operation Rescue operation. Many people were brought on shore, suffering from hypothermia. I gather about 16 were rescued. But there were four dead, man and woman, and these poor children. There is this other line coming out now tt there may be other victims, and maybe a baby. Apparently some of those who survived, iranians, said that the woman who died had a baby, and they are still looking for more victims, im afraid. This is a humanitarian issue increasingly in the u. K. , political as well. How is it being received in france . Gary when things like this happen, it is simply a question of sympathy with what has happened with these people. Theyre all sorts of dimensions to this. There is one dimension herin france, feeling they are constantly under attack by the british were not doing more to stop the boats leaving the beaches. This year there has been a huge increase in the number going over. Many of them are iranians, people coming with more money than previous waves of migrants trying to get across. The french say that britain has made itself very attractive, and that is why people keep coming in, no matter how much is being done to disrupt the camps. They keep on coming. It is as much of the british, equating their country to a honey pot, as it is the french for not doing enough to stop it. Of course, when you have a tragedy like this, the overriding theme is horror and sympathy. Thank you for that. Researchers in the u. K. Have found antibodies against the coronavirus fade within months, challenging the theory of herd immunity. The Imperial College study involved more than 365,000 adults. Here is one of the researchers. Late june, early july, after the first wave, there was about 60 of 6 of people that had evidence of these antibodies. When we looked again in september with people, but the same approach, random sampling, it had fallen to 4. 4 . We did expect to see some decline because antibody levels often decline in the months following an infection. But this was quite a substantial proportion who fell below the detectable limit of this particular test. We think that that is interesting. It suggests this waning of antibodies may be quite rapid compared to other viruses, where antibodies will stay around longer. According to the study, antibody is dropped in all age groups. The smallest decline was in the young age group. 75 and oversaw a much bigger drop. Their antibody levels fell by 39 . You cannot be sure that you will not get it again, so we advise everyone to follow recommendations about hand hygiene, mask wearing, and keeping distance from people. Secondly, we are really in need of a vaccine, which will hopefully produce more immunity in the community. Exactly what the antibody drop means for immunity is uncertain. Other side to say that we should be looking at how t cells play a role in immunity. They are white blood cells that patrol the body, and they can see cells with viruses growing in them. If they show those signs, t cells can fire into those cells and destroy them. The World Health Organization says deaths have increased in europe by 40 this week. They say there is an intense and alarming increase in cases and deaths across the european region. Daily cases of the coronavirus are up a third compared to last week. We will start in the u. K. Which has recorded the largest number of deaths in a single day since the end of may. The latest figures show 367 deaths recorded over the week until last tuesday. That is people who died within 28 days of a positive covid19 test. On average in the past week, 200 deaths announced every day. The total death toll is now above 45,000. Here is our health editor. Ertainly the figure of 306 he seven new reported deaths will be surprising to many people, uponsiderably on the previous day, but we get this tuesday effect of deaths not reported over the weekend. To get wider picture of what is going on, its interesting to look at excess deaths, the number of deaths over and what you would expect over all causes. Lets take a look at a chart that incorporates some of the latest data today in the u. K. That is the fiveyour average which shows each month on average people have died. A bit higher in the early months of the year. Now take a closer look at what has happened this year so far. You can see here it was more or less on the average and then a big spike in april and may because of covid. That red areas is official cod19 deaths. The blue on top of that is excess death some of which may be indirectly related to covid because they did not seek hospital treatment at the time. For the rest of the year, we can see it falls back to the rest of theiveyear average and has started to go back up in the last few weeks. 6 above the average but still well below where we were in april and may. In france, they have reported 523 deaths over the past 24 hours, the highest figure since april. The Health Ministry has reported more than 33,000 new cases in the past 24 hours. Protest began soon after the government ordered restaurants, bars, gyms, and restaurants to close. While these pictures are from milan, tear gas was used to disperse protesters. This is naples. Thousands gathered in this into in the city center. And this is turin. Stores were vandalized and looted. These are the latest pictures from rome tonight. Mark is there. At the beginning of this, italians responded very well to th restrictions in place. It seems things have changed. Mark i think the mood is beginning to change. You might remember in march, april, there was all of that clapping for the doctors and nurses, rainbow flags with the words everything will be fine. The Prime Minister had sky high Approval Ratings for his handling of the first wave but patience is wearing thin now. People are feeling frustrated, tired with the prolonged lockdown of the first wave, and even though the vast majority, according to opinion polls are still on, back the idea of ghter measures to bring down this spiraling infection rates, there are protests we have seen breaking out. The violent ones tend to be fringe groups, farright right or far left extremist groups, football hooligans, which are hijacking the peaceful protests. But there is a lot of measured frustration particularly with the closure of restaurants after 6 00, closure of cinemas, theaters, gyms, and pools the economy in italy is already forecast to shrink 10 this year , and there is a feeling of unease and frustration over the restrictions just imposed. Lewis what kind of economic support is there in place for people affected by these new restrictions . Mark there is incoming support. The government announced they would be no new firings until january at least. Prolonged unemployment allowance. Various voucher schemes to help people work from home to be able to afford babysitters, for example. The Prime Minister said more Financial Assistance will be given to the sectors worst affected by the new restrictions, but the interior minister has warned an autumn of social tension could lie ahead. There are fissures opening up in the government, covid fatigue among the people, and the numbers are not looking good at all with 22,000 cases today, 221 deaths, the highest since may. There is a frightening feeling of deja vu from those dark days. Lewis thanks for that, mark. Lets look at the czech republic. It was praised for its initial response to the crisis, but seven months on,s recording 15,000 new cases a day, as the secondhighest per capita death rate over seven days in the world. New measures include a nightme curfew going into effect tonight. These pictures are from the outskirts of prague. A Field Hospital has been set up by the army. The reserve facility is 500 beds, including 10 icu units. It will be staffed by army personnel, a range of logistics troops. Police patrolling the streets in prague to make sure that people are wear masks outdoors and on transport. In neighboring poland, infections over the past four weeks, the country just reported its highest number since the start of the pandemic. The country is at the highest level of restrictions.
