Thank you. Welcome to outside source. President trump is one step closer to having his justice confirmed on the Supreme Court. 10 no votes. The nomination will be reported favorably to the floor. Amy Coney Barrett has gotten through the committee state. Now she faces a full vote in the senate and it is almost certain that she will be confirmed. Nigerias president has taken to the television to warn protesters not to undermine National Security but failed to mention the shooting that left half a dozen people dead. In almost total ban on abortion, we will hear from a protester in warsaw. Take a look at this. [indiscernible] that is the moment donald trump walks out of an interview with 60 minutes. We will explain why. 12 days until the u. S. President ial election and a couple big stories from the u. S. To focus on. This was the moment that senators in the Judiciary Committee approved amy Coney Barrett for the Supreme Court. Is the chairman, the vote is 12 yeas, 10 no votes. The nomination will be favorable on the floor with a unanimous vote. Democrats boycotted the vote, called it a sham taking place so close to the election. The lead democrat in the senate went on the attack afterwards. The nomination of barrett is the most illegitimate process i have ever witnessed in the senate and her potential confirmation will have dire consequences for the senate, for the Supreme Court, and our entire country for generns to come. The full vote in the senate is on monday. It looks certain that republicans have the numbers. For more on developments, here is our reporter in washington. The root the vote is what happened today. The committee has to vote where the 12 republicans and democrats, and that happened today. There are only 10 democrats. Even if they all voted against it, it still wouldve gone through. This final vote to the senate on monday, which will also go ahead barring any lastminute upsets that are unlikely to happen. There is a 5347 advantage, are likely to confirm judge any Coney Barrett before the election. We heard the lead democrat sounding incredibly upset, talking about the consequences of this process in dramatic terms. What is the basis for the democrats making this kind of claim . They are exemely pained because in 2016, the republicans blocked their nomination of present obamas nominee for 10 months. In this case, they are confirming amy Coney Barrett within just 16 days. This is the fastest Supreme Court nominee at has ever been confirmed. The democrats are calling this a decadelong attempt to skew the court to the far right and they say it is the most illegitimate process that has ever hpened and this will have longlasting ramifications for generations to come. Lets imagine that the vote goes through and it looks like it will on monday. The following week we have the election. Is there any if there is any dispute on the election, whether time in ruling on the disputes . The short answer is yes. This is what worries democrats because she refused to say if she would recuse herself if the election is contested and it is basically presented before the nine Supreme Court judges. Democrats fear that this might be president trumps plan that if he intends to contest the election, he will have a majority, 63 majority and they can rule in his majority and that is why they are protesting so strongly. It is a losing battle for them. Donald trump has released a video of a 60 minutes interview that he has walked out of. In it, he was pushed on several subjects including his handling of the coronavirus and his relationship with dr. Anthony fauci. This is how it ends. Excuse me, no. Your first statement to me this is going to be a tough question. Well, i do not mind that. But you did not say that. You said, lets have a lovely interview. I think we have enough. I think we have enough an interview already. That is enough. Lets go. Lets go me for two seconds. Meet for two seconds. Donald trump has been tweeting about this. Look at the bias, he says. Will not deter 60 minutes from providing its contextual reporting which precedents our reporter is in washington dc and, tell me about this. How d they fall out so badly . Donald trump likes to be on tv. 60 minutes, he probably was not going to pass up on that opportunity, but as we saw and what is astonishing is the fact that he is releasing clips. He is tweeting angrily about how it all went. He claims that 60 minutes previously has given joe biden much easier ride than him. Right from the start, he is grumbling about the interview being challenging. As you imagine, it should be. He does not like the tough questions, and he walked away and there was a statement from cbs backing the program, backing leslie stiles, a very highly respected interviewer. 60 minutes has the interview with mike pence as well. The interview with trump will still go out someday, even though he is tweeting about it. He put his version on social media. There is an interview with joe biden and Kamala Harris as well. It is up to audiences make up their minds on how it went. Just for context for people outside of the u. S. , the cbs sits down with contenders. This happens all the time. It is a tradition. Donald trump was questioned on a lot of things that he does not want to be questioned on, like the coronavirus pandemic. His handling on it. The Affordable Care act, the Obamacare Health care coverage. What are his plans for replacing it . He does not have an answer for that. He did not being questioned about mask wearing at his rallies. And the thing with donald trump is he does not usually give interviews to networks which challenge him. For quite a while now, he has often done with f news, who are way more favorable to him in his opinion then 60 minutes was. Good to talk to you. Another twist and turn. Now, next on outside source , lets turn to nigeria. His peaceful protests against peaceful protest lady against lice brutality turned to violence. [speaking foreign language] many of whom have expressed concern about ongoing developments in nigeria. As you all we ask you all to seek and know the facts available before taking a position or rushg to judgment and making hasty pronouncements. Earlier in the day, the president shared and National Security meeting. The agencies were all there. A spokesperson tweeted, it is not the president s desire to see loss of lives, and he wants to make sure that things do not cascade into an unpleasant situation. Not to do anything to aggregate the situation. The Vice President has also been talking, promising justice for people shot during the protest. He tweeted, the pain of these terrible events is palpable in our towns and cities, and some losses are irreplaceable. We can and will get justice for all of them. But that would involve the government saying who fired the shots, and we have heard nothing. Security forces killed at least 12 people, and they deny any involvement. Violence continues to come in from lagos because of a strict curve you curfew in place. The citys oldest neighborhood was set on fire. Vandals took goods that were confiscated by the courts. Our reporter has more from there. This is what was left after looters stormed this place on wednesday, i witnesses have told us eyewit eyewitnesses have told us that fire was set at security points. It spread to this building at about 7 00. This building is crucial for justice in lagos. Cases for armed robbery, kidnapping, criminally related offenses, this is where these cases are heard. Have a look at these pictures. That is a prison in the city that was set on fire. There were reports of gunshots. Local media is reporting that the curfew may be lifted at some point. Heres a report from the royal times. They say that it could happen on friday to restock Food Supplies and essential items. In response to these peaceful protests has led to on donation. We heard from the nigerian writer who has written a piece for the new york times, accusing the government from murdering its citizens. She writes, the only reason to shoot into group of citizens is to terrorize and make people back down. It is an unforgivable crime. The brazenness is chilling, she says. We will hear from the bbc team that was at the scene when soldiers allegedly started shooting at protesters on tuesday. Here she is. The military came in and they were shooting, so every day surrounded the protesters. They created a barricade around them. They kept shooting and the coordinators of the protes they asked protesters is to sit on the ground and they remained peaceful. They didith the court in naders asked them. It sat on the floor and waving their flags and singing the protest song. That did not deter the soldiers and they kept shooting for 20 minutes. They continued shooting sporadically. The government the military rather them out and said that they have no hand in the assault that happened on tuesday. But that is alive. It was the soldiers, i saw them. The soldiers were there that night on tuesday. There have been videos that emerged on social media and we could see from the unabomber that these were not mobile police offices. These were soldiers. The protests have been going on for twoeeks. They begin with the antirubber squad or sars. They had been accused of human rights violations, torture, killings. The president dissolved that it last week, but the demonstrations continued, calling for more change in the Security Forces and what a against corruption. That is because there have been promises for reforms many times before. People have been looking for actions, not words. Next, we hear from the Police Commissioner who founded sars. I always tell my wife that i am sad. I said, what i created for what purpose has become it is not what i established. Now you are disowning sars . I disown it. Assaulting people. Telling people unnecessarily. Killing people unnecessarily. That is not why it was created. After the president addressed the nation, i spoke to a reporter in lagos. Many would expect that the president would at least give him answers on who fired the shot on tuesday night. It is quite shocking that we did not get any answers to those questions. In an interview today, the footage from the camera at the tall points is intact. Many thought it would be nice to find out what happened that night. The true story of what happened that night. Sadly, many nigerians did not get those answers. And while nigerians wait for answers, when you speak to people involved in the protest, are they going out in spite of the risk and the curfew . Totally. Protesters were shot and protesters were still at that point demanding justice. They want reforms in the educational center. If the government ascending, the army, the police, the Security Forces ordered them to shoot them down. They will not stop protesting in many sectors of the country. Many of them are entering a bad governance and they have said they will not stop until they get the real change that they deserve. In a few minutes, we will spend a few minutes talking about exit and trade talks brexit and fishing remains an obstacle. We will axley want we will explain why. Here in the u. K. , an increase in taxpayer support to proct jobs from covid restrictions. Our correspondent was at the press coerence. The problems that are rewritten today why do you keep underestimating the help that people really need . It is a fair question about the timing of this. If you think back to the summer when we designed the scheme, in conjunction with businesses, at that point we were looking forward to the economy reopening and restrictions lifted. What we have seen in the last four or five weeks is as these restrictions have been put in place, the impact they are having on the ground has been highly significant, particularly to businesses in the hospitality sector. It is the cumulative weight of all these restrictions tha has seen this in their numbers over the past few weeks. This is outside source from the bbc news room. Our lead story comes from washington. Amy Coney Barrett has taken a step closer to a seat on the Supreme Court. Our nomination has been approved by the committee. A story from poland, ending the life of a deforme fetuses unconstitutional. That means abortion in poland is permissible only in cases of rape or in test, or to protect the mothers life. We saw plenty of support for womens rights to choose. Poland already has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in europe and opinion polls show that they are against restrictions, but some catholic groups pressured the restrictions to be tougher. That is what has happened. Among those at the protests, the leader of the women strike movement. She described what is happening. You see what is happening behind me. This is the protest happening now. We went from the building, we are going to the headquarters [indiscernible] from the people are on the streets . About 3000. What do you make of the governments decision to go via the courts rather than parliament . They are afraid of us and it shows what priorities they have. It is 12,000 cases of covid today. The ban abortion because it is not true that anything happened. This court and the judges there have not appointed legally, so nothing changes. The actual things can happen, the announcement with government media line that there was a ruling and there is a court. But we already are in contact with doctors who said thathey treat todays announcement as an announcement, not law. Sorry darren up to sorry to interrupt you, but if you believe in the rule of law, surely if your Constitutional Court says something, it is important to follow that ruling. No. It is not a Constitutional Court. Free people are not judges. They were not appointed. There were not appointed legally. They were not appointed legally. The person heading the court was not appointed legally. It is not a Constitutional Court. Every week, we produce a video that looks in depth at one of the main stories of the week. We are looking at a major issue in the u. K. Eu trade talks. Theres tension in the fishing industry and for many fishermen, brexit is about taking an opportunity. There is a persuasive logic to the idea that a country should control its resources. What sound simple is proving difficult. It helped create lets start with the deals in the 1970s. They a the basis of the system still used by the eu. Here the uks exclusive zone, marked in red. If you are in the eu, it is not asked to. It is a single it is not exclusive. An individual fishermen or company can own that part of the National Quota and thats allow that will love them to fish a certain amount. Fishing rights changed and some english fishermen sold their quotas to foreign businesses. They voluntarily give up the right to fish in their own waters. Those quotas gained value. The bbc has found that by 2019, over half of the value of the fishing quarter was controlled by vessels in foreign ownership. The same is true in wales. In scotland, the figure is lower. European boats have been operating in u. K. Waters for years and from a european perspective, this should continue. The first because a way of life is at stake. The context for british waters is the end of our profession. He says he will not let that happen. In no circumstances will our fishern be sacrifices to brexit. European Companies Argue that they catch it and sell it, or english people have to learn brexit is a reality. We are heading for an inevitable reset of fishing. Some argue that the eu has to accept this. The eu position on fishing is absurd. Everything changes because of brexit, but on fish, it stays the same. Perhaps fishing matters because it is about everything. About brexit promises being capped. Broader negotiations on trade. The agreement on fishing is hard, but inevitable. That includes some degree on the u. K. s fish. Big media story. The big streaming service qubi offered snack in media for 10 minutes or less and despite 1. 8 billion dollars of investments and plenty of hollywood stars, the service did not get enough subscribers. It only had 700 10,000 households subscribing to it. It is not succeeding. The idea itself was not Strong Enough for standalone streaming services, or because of our timing. The pandemic is something we could never have imagined. Hothose two factors put an end to qubi. The idea is not a bad one. Why not create content for mobile phones . That is what they did. They filmed things vertically rather than horizontally. The problems were many. I think there was an idea that may be it would be used by commuters on a tra to catch up with content. That did not happen. Commuting is way down. When it came to content itself, there was the standout everyone was talking about. It was subscriptionbased, so it was competing against the likes of youtube, whh is free. You have to sit through ads, but it is free. Bi did not do as well as they thought they would do. Yesterdays announcements showed that they were not just doing badly, they were doing really, really badly. That is the surprising thing to many. The new upandcoming six months ago, and now it is dead in the water. The Judiciary Committee has approved amy Coney Barrett after Democratic Senators boycotted the hearing. The full that will be on monday. We think her appointment would give conservatives a 63 majority in the Supreme Court. Chuck schumer condemned the process as illegitimate and warned of dire consequences for the entire country. He claims that they shouldve rated until after the president ial election. That does not happen unless something strange happens for the third time donald trump has nominated someone as a justice on the Supreme Court. Thanks for tuning in.
