Amnesty international has said that nigerias security killed people in lagos last night. Amnesty says most of them died when soldiers opened fire. Reports vary, but at least hundreds of people had gathere at the tollgate as part of protests against Police Brutality that have known in recent weeks. These pictures show protesters running to take shelter and you can hear the sound of gunfire. The shooting lasted for up to an hour. They are shooting at us. They are shooting. I want to show you another video that has been widely shared. It is dark, but you can see you cahear protester sending the National Anthem among gunfire. Youanear the voice of that man cracking a little as the gunfire begins. Heres an account of another man on the street last night. I saw over three dead bodies. Shot last night. I saw them. These people, authorities are downplaying the incident. The twitter account put out a series of tweets labeling the protesters as fake news and claiming that there were no soldiers at the scene. Our correspondent has tweeted the truth is that nigeria always the reality is they killed more than 300 people. There have been denials from the state governor of lagos. He says that authorities are investigating one death and it is not clear if this person was a protester. And he said this. I will do everything to ensure that every life indeed matters. Protests have been going on for the past two weeks. They began over a Notorious Police unit. It included torture and should do just a killings. The president dissolved that police unit last week, but the demonstrations have broadened. They continue to ask for changes and why do reforms against corruption. Legos state governor claims that high jacked of this movement an indefinite 24 hour curfew against lagos. It is africas largest city. These are the latest pictures from lagos today. Some shops are closed, streets deserted. A major nigerian tv station linked to one of the ruling parties top politicians has been sent a light. Much more than one police unit. A lot of people are angry because every other day, while they protest, they do not it has not truly been disbanded. That has been disbanded four times in the past four years in nigeria. There is distrust between the people and the government as their calling for more action and resignations. They are calling for withdrawal because people have still given them firsthand accounts of sars still on the streets and in the uniforms. We will hear from someone in lagos main streets. The scene after troops allegedly started shooting at protesters. And then this happened. [gunfire] those two videos based in lagos, she says it started peacefully with protester sitting on the ground sitting the net singing the National Anthem and waving the flag. Within two hours, saw the sirens. The threw two gas and [indiscernible] people ran underneath cars. I had banditry i hid behind a tree. Did you see was firing . We did. It was the Police Firing shots. The fight about 30 rounds. They fired about 30 rounds. It went on and on and people were running. We tried to lay low but bause of the tear gas [indiscernible] people have to disperse. It was horrifying. Really scary. People crying. Yeah. It was it was surreal. Sounds terrified. Did you see anyone hit by the bullets . Nobody was hit at this particular protest because thankfully there was lots of inner roads. People ran underneath cars, behind trees. People were only affected by the tear gas. Nobody was hit by a bullet thankfully. They were protesting peacefully and it was uncalled for. We were really upset by it. We have quite different accounts. Our correspondent in lagos. We were at the scene of the shooting earlier today and met another number of ewitnesses. Many of them described men wearing camouflage and they believe that they were soldiers because nobody else is allowed to wear camouflage in nigeria. They said they saw a number of bodies. That can that figure kept changing. It counted 12 bodies between both incidents. The curfew is still in place in theory, but is it being respected today . In some parts of lagos, things are very quiet. Very few calls on the street. We drove into one of the areas that had some violence last night. We noticed young men walking around, roaming the streets. Many said they were there to protest, there to show that they were not being iimidated by the events. That they would try and stop looters who were targeting the businesses. We did see some businesses go up in flames and a couple businesses had broken windows. Cash machines. There was evidence of destruction, but for the most part, most were cute to reitere what happened last night was traumatizing f many of them. They were keen to come out on the streets. Our growing list of celebrities are pledging support. That includes beyonce, rihanna, kanye west, naomi cambell. And this video. I cannot keep quiet anymore. You guys are shame to the world. For killing your own menaces your own citizens. Because they are protesting for the rights. It is uncalled for. Protests outside of nigeria as well. In london, banners denouncing the nigerian president. And plenty more on the situion in nigeria from bbc. Com news. We will ask whether President Trumps has succeeded the past four years and look at his impact of America First policy. More areas in the north of england are facings more restrictions for coronavirus. Tier three, the highest alert level. That means some pubs and restaurants will shut. Household mixing will be banned. Unlike manchester, which argues over Financial Support that it should receive. South yorkshire has a package. This is another million or more people who are now affected by the highest level of local lockdown restrictions and the mayor of the city region here has said that he has accepted those tighter measures because more of the people were contracting the virus here. The number of people with covid and local hospitals have doubled over the last 10 days. There was no sign that that would relent over the next upcoming weeks and in action was not an option. That means that there will be further disruption to social life and business. Today, our lead story is from france were ceremony and carrots has been led by the president who has paid tribute to the teacher beheaded for showing a cartoon of the prophet in class. The outcome of the u. S. Election will influence much more beyond the u. S. Borders. What the world wants from america. It has been assessing the Global Impact of the Trump Presidency so far. Today, we turn to the middle east. On u. S. Policy. From the ear days of his campaign, donald trump made it clear what he thinks of the nuclear deal. This was a horrible oneded deal that should have never ever been made. He said that the deal was not containing irans Ballistic Missile program and enable them to continue what he called the destabilizing activities in the middle east. 2019, he withdrew from the nuclear deal. He reimposed u. S. Sanctions against around iran. This has left the International Community critical of his policy, for the fear that it may further aliene iran and push it. Then there was the killing of soleimani. The u. N. Called this illegal and iran responded by attacking two american bases. No soldiers were killed. It actually seemed to work. Ir has died down its activities in the persian gulf. The question is, will it come to the table of President Trump is reelected, or will the financial and humanitarian hardships of another four years of sanctions lead to unrest that destabilizes yet another country . Not everyonen the middle east sees the u. S. President as a faux. As a foe. The first time two weeks later, saudi arabia, United Arab Emirates, and egypt put a blockade on qatar. Supporting tially, President Trump did not hide his bias. America plenty of reasons. One, a crisis would harm the sector negatively. Worried about its Largest Military base in the middle east. At the blockade seemed to backfire and push qatar more towas iran. President trump sold off deals to both. The next step after sending all these weapons into the region. After decades, trump has overseen the normalization between the United Arab Emirates and israel. You have been the greatest friend in the white house. Jump had pledged with his 2016 campaign to recognize the resume. He delivered on that and he decided to move the u. S. Embassy to jerusalem. And overturned decades of policy and put the u. S. At odds with the rest of the International Community. Views from the palestinian side, it was not good either. If jerusalem was going to be the capital of a future state. For trump, that was one step in the pursuit of east and the region. Peace in the region. All of Gaza Anderson and jerfusalem. Israels all right some have arguably affected us all. President trump has put an end to multilateralism and his first policies have the u. S. Removing itself from joint efforts with other countries. That has not pleased everyone. A very important thing i nuclear agreement, clearly very important, if it makes the Global Health issues, the world health organization, extremely important these days. Trump is left it can go to area by area, that previously was trying to exercise some sort of Global Leadership on global issues. That is one assessmt. Here is another. An analyst on foreign affairs. I think as disastrous as it has been, Foreign Policy has told a different story. He has not started any new wars. You would think that that is a low war. But this is the first president since jimmy carter to not start a new war. Fundamentally, as we look toward the future, i think he has introduced a number of discussions into the washington bubble. He is asked why the u. S. Is still in afghanistan 20 years after the original invasion. He is asked why wealthy european nations are not able to support the cost of their events. And obviously germany as the prime example of that. You may ask, has he offered an alternative and i do not think he has, but he has done such a complete demolitn job that joe biden wont find it difficult to go back to the previous consensus. Lets talk about a huge moment for the Catholic Church and in particular for gay pat gay catholics. Samesex couples should be allowed to have civil unions, is significant departure from what his predecessors have said. This was part of the rome film festival. Here you can see the trailer. In the film, he says that homosexual people are children of god and have a right to a family, nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it. What we have to cate is a civil union law. That way, they are legally covered. Mark, it is an important statement. Wasnt made in an unusual way . He makes it in this documeary, sometimes it is spanish, sometimes italian. He is responding at one point to a gay catholic who writes who wrote a letter to the pope expressing real concern about history. Children he wanted to wring his children to communion, but he wanted the blessing. It is an unusual setting. The fact that he has said this in the context of an interview, rather than a more formal setting, it was not a speech. Level discussion with the Catholic Church. It makes one think really that this is not one should expect the Catholic Church to change direction on this fundamental issue. Should we not even assume that this will happen . I think what it will do is renew debates in the Catholic Church about the issue of homosexuality and civil unions. The fact that he has departed from catholic teaching. Deviant behavior. This is a new debate, it will be broadly welcomed by the sit the liberal side of the Catholic Church. It will be criticized by the catholic side. He is somebody who is broadly welcomed by the liberals, criticized by the conservatives. We are not going to suddenly wake up tomorrow and the Catholic Church will just be allowing gay men to have civil unions. This is a institution that move slowly. We are in it many countries resolved this years ago. Yeah. I have to say, when argentina resolved it by passing a law that legalized samesex marriages, he was extremely against it and supported civil unions as an alternative at the time. This shows that this is not a radical sht in position with a pope who has flirted with liberal sentiments in the past. He tends to fall back on traditional positions.
