President trump says hes prepared to go ahead next week with a second televised debate against joe biden despite his treatment for covid. The president returned to the white house from hospital last night, and his doctors say hes doing extremely well. Here is our north america editor. Reporter when donald trump left the white house last frida he appeared rejected, fearful. But his return last night couldnt have been more different. The former reality tv star knows how to make an entrance and so had the white house turned into a made for televisio spectacular, deliberately timed so it could be taken live by the network news teams who were on air at the time. After striding off marine one, he walked up to the south portico, and there, what was the first thing he did . He deliberately removed his mask, even though he is still infectious. Vid was there to be frightened. Dont let it dominate you. Dont be afraid of it. You are going to beat it. We have the best medical equipment. We have the best medicines, all developed recently. And you are going to beat it. I went, i didnt feel so good. Two days ago, i felt great, like better than i have in a long time. I said recently, better than 20 years ago. Reporter although 210,000 americans have died and over 7 million infted, this was donald trump presenting himself as the warrior president who had seen off the hidden enemy. I stood out front, i lead. Nobody thats a leader would not do what i did. I know theres a risk. There is danger, but thats ok. Now ibetter and maybe im immune, i dont know. Reporter there were numerous takes as the president all the time without a mask interacted with staff. In swing state pennsylvania, there are some pretty entrenched views. President trump has not taken covid seriously from day one. If he did take it seriously, we would not be in the suation. I think he tried not to scare the people, thats what it was. I just dont understand how he could contract covid and then get released and come right out and get on stage and take the mask off and Start Talking to people. Thats crazy. Reporter his democratic rival is campaigning in florida. He said he was glad to see the president back, but added this anybody who contracts the virus by essentially saying masks dont matter, social distancing doesnt matter, i think is responsible for what happens to them. Reporter the latest medical bulletin issued by the president s physicians said he had restful night, was reporting no symptoms, and his vitals were stable. But yesterday evening, after climbing the stairs, he was clearly gasping for breath. May be theres a gap between the image he wants to project and a more fragile reaty. Katty the u. S. Election of course just 28 days away, although some are already voting. Tomorrow, we will play close attention to the Vice President ial debate in salt lake city, utah. Normally, that does not get very many big ratings, but with the advanced age of the president ial candidates and mr. Trumps recent diagnosis, voters do want to know more about who could be next in line. Lets talk about that with brad blakeman, former advisor to george w. Bush. He joins us from washington, d. C. The Vice President ial debate coming up tomorrow. We already have the Vice President s team saying Kamala Harris will be putting herself into a fortress because she wants plexiglass between the candidates. But given what happened to the president , that might be sensible. Looked, she wants a show, she will get the show she wants. Certainly you follow the reasonable guidelines. This is an insidious disease. Any time humans think they are more powerful than mother nature, she has a way of humbling us. Democrats think they control the weather, they control pandemics. They cant. They wont. These things sometimes need to play out, protecting the most vulnerable, but the world needs to get on living. America needs to get on living because the cure is worse than the disease. Katty lets talk about humility. I want to ask about a couple things the president has said in the last 24 hours. Theyave provoked questions about whether he is taking this seriously. Do you think it was responsible for the president , for example, to leave hospital saying theres nothing to be afraid of and i feel 20 years younger than i did before . A lot of people havent managed to fight this disease. 200 10,000 americans have died. I think they do feel there is something to be afraid of. And millions more have been saved. A pandemic is something that occurs in nature. It is going to have a toll to take on our society, but being fearful of the success rate coming through this disease is 99 , we shouldnt be fearful, we should be cautious. We should be reasonable. We should use common sense and listen to science. We should listen to the doctors. Katty does being cautious and reasonable and sensible include sending a message that Wearing Masks is a useful preventative measure . Of course. If the doctors say wearing a mask in public, which they do, is a sensible precaution, of course wear a mask. When appropriate, social distance. All those things are good to mitigate. Katty you know i am asking you this. In the last president ial debate, we saw the president making fun of joe biden for wearing a mask. Last night, as soon as you go back to the white house, the first thing he did was take his mask determinedly off. Is he now going to say exactly what you just said . Its a good idea for people to wear masks and social distance . Italmost comical. First of all, your reporter, i dont know what he was watching in the lead uo this segment, but to say the president was gasping for breath, thats just fake news. I urge your viewers, go back and watch. The president wasnt gasping for breath. Thats a lie and you guys should be ashamed of yourself for saying that. That is not an objective statement. Thats a subjective statement totally false. President removed his mask and is at home. He was almost a football field away from the press. Theres a time to wear a time. Joe biden has found it three after call to make where. To wear a mask in places that dont require it. Katty so are you saying the president has been a big supporter of Wearing Masks . He did sort of make fun of joe biden a couple times for weing masks. Do you think that is helpful . Look, when people do it for theatrical purposes, you call them out on it. Theres a proper place and time to wear our mask. First of all, you dont wear in a car alone. You dont wear it amongst your family when they are hlthy. There is a political message that joe biden has been using and using the mask as a prop. Everybody knows that. Katt brad, do you think this message is working for the president . The polls suggested it might not be. The polls suggested a lot in 2016 and they were wrong. I think the president has done the right thing trying to mitigate this scourge. If it can attack the president , it can attack anyone. The good news is, the success rate of coming through this if you are young and have no preexisting conditions that would exacerbate it, you will come through it. The president has come through it, thank god, so far. Others have and others will. The fact of the matter is millions have been saved by the actions that have been taken. Katty ok. Brad blakeman, thank y for joining us. Both u. S. President ial candidates have religion at the center of their campaign, although white evangelicals helped donald trump win the white house at 27 2016. This year is a little more complicated. In North Carolina, less than one percentage point between the ndidates. We have been speaking to critical voters in this state. Reporter john will trump donald trump won big here in 2016 helped in part by christian voters. I would describe myself politically as a Christian Conservative patriot. Reporter according to exit polls, eight out of 10 white evangelicals voted for donald trump. My faith and my relationship with jesus christ rules my decisions. Our leadership dtates the society we live in and i would prefer it continues to stay the god centered country it was originally created to be. Reporter this year, the race in North Carolina is tight, but a different kind of christian could help swing the state. Im a christian and i know the church is diverse. There are black people like me, latinos, and an increasingly vocal christian left. I wanted to speak to people we dont usually hear from. Covid19 andhe job losses it has brought have hit black and latino communities disproportionately hard. We started this about march. March 15. Reporter pastor michael offers drivethrough meals for the needy at his church on the out skates outskirts of the state capital. Demand have reached tenfold during the pandemic. The black Christian Group is more energized this election cycle because what we have seen his lives really do depend on it. Reporter he wants all of his congregation to vote. I do not believe that President Trump presents christian values. I believe President Trump preys on the Christian Faith in order to seek reelection. Reporter more than one quarter of all christians are black or latino and these groups generally vote for the democratic party, but republicans are hoping to win over voters like 19yearold rose. Some pros for trump would be the abortion. I think that is something i agree with. Reporter Latino Christians have been called the ultimate swing voter. Nearly half are catholic and tend to be more socially conservative. But Donald Trumps stance on immigration can be difficult. Roses mom is from honduras at the tempora scheme allowing her to be in the u. S. Is in limbo. I would like to see him give a chance to immigrants, give them an opportunity to live in this country and not have to worry about getting deported. Reporter everyone ive spoken with was really worried about whats happening in america. Whilst they may have different views about what should be done about it, what they have in common is their faith. It is the lens through it they through which they see the world, including politics, and thats why jesus could be key to winning this election. Bbc news. Reporter europes leaders immersed in the cond wave. Angela merkel, ever cautious, admits she is worried. German case numbers are rising although they are still significantly lower than france, spain, and britain. There is a still strong chance things could get out of control. The government now advises and funds organizations to install airing systems like those produced here. The firm expects a busy autumn, because since the pandemic began, they have also delivered this, and air. Fire does air purifier, designed to filter out aerosols from classrooms. With the coronavirus, its not only that you have one aerosol, but you have to have a concentration to be infected. If we reduce the risk of being infected significantly for everyone in the classroom, its great. Theres no one hundred percent certainty. Reporter as the season changes, new concerns arise. With citizens across the world having lived under coronavirus restrictions for months, the World Health Organizations warning it could cause pandemic fatigue. The director of the university of London College says its natural to feel apathic. They are defining fatigue as a lack of motivation. Certainly when you look at the us figure, what you see is people are still overwhelmingly adhering to the majority of the guidance, and this isnt diminishing over time. When one is looking at behavior, it is not just thinking about motivation. It is also about, do people have the knowledge and understanding . Do they have the opportunity to kind of support their behavior . And there is not strong evidence at all that the reason, for example, transmission is going up, is because people arent adhering to guidelines. Katty People Living in the disputed territory are facing genocide, according to the Prime Minister of armenia. He told the bbc that the region was facing assault from azerbaijan and turkey and what he called terrorists from syria. More than 250 have died in recent fighting, the latest in a long running dispute over the territory which is officially part of azerbaijan but is run by Ethnic Armenians. Reporter 10 days in, no sign of either armenia or azerbaijan easing up. In and around the disputed region, shells are falling on cities and on civilians. With people fleeing and having lost territory, armenias Prime Minister is on the defensive. Under International Law, armenia has been illegally occupying nagornokarabakh and the adjacent areas for more than 25 years. You can see why some people have very little sympathy. I protests, that is not true. It is true. Look at International Law, you and assembly resolutions. There is no such International Law you are citing. Everyone is citing the u. N. General assembly resolutions, but very few people unfortunately have read them. There isnt anything in there to say that armenia has occupied anything. That is not the case. Reporter there is very little armenia can do to stop nagookarabakh being targeted from the air. This weend, we experienced firsthand the terror of shells landing randomly nearby. Because you say you come back from there, you have seen that the armenians in nagornokarabakh are facing an existential threat. It is an existential threat. The whole problem is, the armed forces of azerbaijan succeed, than it would mean the genocide of armenians in nagornokarabakh. Reporter azerbaijan is carrying out this offensive with turkeys full backing and today the turkisforeign minister met the president. No social distancing here. Both men stated the determination to reclaim nagornokarabakh. Armenias best bet for support is russia. For now, moscow seems content to watch as the fighting continues. Bbc news. They have a logical connection with Climate Change. Reporter most Water Systems across east africa are interconnected, like lake victoria, fed by rivers from neighboring countries and is itself the source of the white nile, which flows through to sudan and into egypt. Now this natural advge could help mitigate against extreme weather caused by Climate Change, but only if governments work together. That is proving difficult.
