Life well planned. The freeman foundation. By judy and Peter Blum Kovler foundation; pursuing solutions for americas neglected needs. And by contributions to this pbs station from viewers like you. Thank you. Welcome to outside source. Donald t has been forced to explain this. Stand back and stand by. Donald trump is saying that he has always condemned White Supremacists. I do not kn who the proud boys are. I said they have to stand down and let Law Enforcement do their work. He did know who they were when he referred to them in the debates. It will announce new measures to ensure what it calls an orderly concession for the two debates still to come. Refusing to end the military operation as it demands full control of the region. And the latest from the u. K. s coronavirus briefing. Its advisers are wning that we do not have this under control. If u. S. President ial debates are about informing the people about how democracy works, than what we saw last night was a failure. For 90 minutes, the pressure was laid bare. Cnn called it a hot mess inside a Dumpster Fire inside a train wreck. The interruptions and insults cast a shadow of proceedings, so much so that the commission that organizes them says they will bring in new measures to ensure a re orderly discussion of the issues in the next two debates. We will work through the key moments and the fallout from the infamous night starting with President Trump passing up the chance to condemn whi supremacists. What you want to call them . Give me a name. Whdo you want me to condemn . White supremacists. Stand back, stand by. But i tell you what, someone has to do something about antifa. He did tell a far right group to standby. Now he sought to clarify this. He says he has always denounced White Supremacists. That is not true. And this is what he said about the proud boys. I do not know who they are because i really do not know who they are. I said they have to stand down and let Law Enforcement do their work. Lets be clear. He did not address White Supremacy during the debate and did refer to the pot noise proud bs. He said the president condemns White Supremacists in the strongest possible way. A Washington Post columnist sees it differently. He gave an instruction to this group as though he was their leader. He said standby as though he is waiting for further instructions if there is violence. I think the intentions and the polarization around the election are so great and is an and trumps languages so President Trumps language is so explosive. Ere is what joe biden said. This president will step down. He has no alternative. The American People will not stand for it. No agency would stand for that happening. My message to the proud boys is cease and desist. That is not who we are as americans. If you do not know of the proud boys, the group was founded in 2016, it is farright and has a strict membership protocol. They have become responsible for confrontations, they frequently face off against opposing groups. Facebook says it considers it a hate organization, but they still use private social Media Channels and a number of reports in u. S. Media says that members of the proud boys worth celebrating his refusal to condemn them. The other group referenced was antifa, short for antifascists. A loose affiliation of farleft activists. Some have track record for using violence to make their point. They have been prominent during black lives matter movements and have frequently clashed with police. Proud boys and antifa are relatively small. But their willingness to use violence on occasions means that they get a disproportionate amount of attention. The next issue is how moderate the moderator struggled to retain his interruptions. Can i be honest . No. He stood up. The answer to that question is no. With a billion dollars that is not true. Gentlemen i hate to raise my voice, but why should i be different from the two of you . The country would be better served with fewer interruptions i am appealing to you sir. You have been doing more interrupting. But he does plenty. [laughter] less than you have. Lets continue on. There was plenty more of that. One columnist tweeted, people are hating on chris wallace, but i think there was no way to moderate this debate effectively. The atlantic argues that this was intentional. The point of trumps performance is to 2 on 1 was not surprising, but fun. Chris wallace is a registered democrat, but works for fox news. The commission that runs these debates says the rules need to be changed. In a statement it says, last nights debate makes clear that additial structures must be added to the format of the debate to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues. Lets go to a further analysis in washington dc. After the debate, commentators looked shocked. They said, lets stop here. Why would we want to have another one . What is the point . The commission is saying more structure is needed for orderly discussion. We are considering new tools and will let you know shortly. There have been calls for the moderator being able to cut the mic. Bear in mind, the next debate will be a different format. It will be town hall where ordinary people ask questions. That might be a format that is less likely to be dominated by mr. Trump in this way. Did seem to be very calculated about his iraq of insults barrage of insults. Mr. Biden said he will continue with these debates no matter what. He raised quite a bit of money for his campaign during this debate. You have to wonder how many people will keep on tuning in if the commission does not come up with something that can actually bring order to this and make it a debate ratthan a fiasco. I am losing count of the number of commentators that are writing articles are going on tv or tweeting that this is now a crisis in american democracy. What we have seen more generally. Youve been covering american politics for a while, do you think th is overstating it . President trump has been chipping away at the norms and institutions of democracy for the past few years, but that has escalated in the past few months because he has actively cast doubt on the democratic process itself. He says that mailin voting will lead to massive fraud when there is no evidence that is the case. He has not committed himself to accepting the results of the election. He has not even committed to a peaceful transition of our. Of power. His democracy right now in a crisis here is democracy right now and crisis here . I think it is being tested. What are the polls looking like right now . He has had a stable lead for quite a while. Also, he has leads in a number of swing states as well. The feeling going into the debate was that President Trump s on the defensive. He would need to shift attention away from himself towards mr. Biden. That did not happen, as we see. Some analysts are saying there was no winner. Therefore, joe biden is the winter because he is out in front. This is one of the moments that the world is watching. In germany, they said the debate was like a car accident. The global times said it was the most chaotic president ial debate ever. The italian newspaper declared that american politics had never sunk so low. It was chaotic, rowdy, and based in mutual contempt. The u. K. Described it as not a debate in any meaningful sense, but rather an ill tempered, incomprehensible squabble between two who loathe each other. When historians assess the harm in the 21st century, the florida debacle will be on the list, guantanamo, and his first president ial debate. This first president ial debate. President trumps former National Security advisor has spoken to bbc world news today and picks up on some of those themes and says that the deep divions are harming america. We are acting like our own worst enemies and so, as you allude to russia, they are trying to drag us down. They are trying to polarize our societies, pit us against each other, it will really amplify these narrow identities in a way that reduces our confidence in and who we are as people and our processes. All of our leaders, especially the ones on stage last night, they have to be more responsible. They have to recognize the damage they are doing and how easy they are making it for our determined adversaries bringing you an update on covid19 in the u. K. Boris johnson is warning the government that he will not hesitate to bring in further restrictio no matter how inpatient we may be, how fed up, there is only one way. Showing a collective forbearance, commonsense, and willingness to make sacrifices for the safety of others. The number of increases is over 7000 reported in the last 24 hours. My second day, there were 71 deaths. Here is the chief medical officer ordained warning that the case numbe are going in the wrong direction. There is general increase across the whole of england, as wes wales and northern ireland, with a few exceptions. A rapid increase in particular areas, particularly the northeast and northwest. This is a precarious moment for the country and the government. It is not the first time we have heard these warnings from the Prime Minister in sin days. It has been only a fortnight since the rule of six has been established because cases went up again. It has only been a week since the unusual address to the whole country to warn that we were in a serious moment. The reason we are hearing these serious warnings engraved terms, time and again, is of course the worry about the way the virus is spreading, but also a concern about how much the public is paying atton right now and whether or not this is an element of fatigue after six months of limits on our livesn some shape or form. Another element is the Prime Minister is working in a less forgiving, more hostile political environment. He has that huge majority in parliament, but as we have seen in recent days, he is less able to rely on support, being come printed and reliable for the things he feels he may need to do in the coming weeks. In a f moments, we will turn to india where protests are increasing over the gang rape and death of a wom. The World Health Organization is pledging to investigate allegations that dozens of Children Women were assaulted. 51 women have accused staff at who. Heres the bbc editor. I have been speaking to people and i am surprised that they were telling me that they are not surprised that this has come out. Yes, clearly this was something that was going on. Something that was wellknown to those who are in those circles. It is shocking because it is coming a few years after the allegations, the investigations in haiti about workers there, and the me too movement that followed. It is shocking that it could go on for so long and it could go at this scale. We are here in the bbc news room. Our lead story is that President Trump is saying that farright groups should stand down and let Law Enforcement do their work. He was heavily criticized for telling one group to standby. Lets update you with the fighting in armenia. His is over this is over a region going into its fourth da this is a videoeleased by the ministry of defense showin artillery strikes on wednesday. People have been killed since this began on sunday. Even though it is recognized internationally as his territory, it is controlled by ethnic armenians. Declared their independence in 1991 and have ruled themselves since then. That has been a major source of tension between these two former soviet republics. This eventually reached a ceasefire in 1994, which give armenia full control and of the surrounding enclaves. While there was a ceasefire, crucially, this area is still disputed. Sunday, this started to happen. Artillery fire on both sides. Armenia is accusing them of starting a military operation inside the region. This is now an extraordinary situation as the guardian reports. We have a situation where we have transient or fair going on in europe. More than 100 years after the first world war. It reports that in some areas, the lines are some so close that they can talk to each other. We know it has suffered casualties. These pictures, this looks to be a funeral of a soldier who was fighting. This picture is the aftermath of the shelling inside the district neighboring the caravan. Our reporter is close to the town of tarta. Throughout the day, i have heard sounds of artillery. Armenian military units fired at the city of dr. I have talked to many people. Many say that they were living under turkey backs azerbaijan. The released footage that says it is proof of wreckage that armenia claims was shot down by turkey in armenian airspace. Turkey denies this. Lets listen to the turkish Prime Minister. Armenia and the armenians are now exposed to a direct threat from turkey. According to our data, turkey is looking for a pretext to being even more broadly in this conflict. Many in the community are worried. They are calling for an immediate halt to hostilities and a return to negotiations. I have noted turkeys turkeys declarations. I say this particularly with regard to armenia, france and its role that presupposes the impartiality that justifies my prudence remains can extremely concerned with the warlike messages that turkey has sent. We also have this from azerbaijans president. He said they only have one condition armenian troops must leave the land immediately. If the government meets this condition, the fighting will stop and blood will not be shared shed. Here is a journalist and a news editor for bbc russia on how entrenched this conflict is. It seems they are close to each other after some negotiations with the group, but since then, a long time ago, they are as far apart as possible. These are two sworn enemies now. What i could do with some help is why azerbaijan is pushing this issue so strongly now when armenia is effectively running this region for many years. Azerbaijan has lost control over the seven surrounding regions and suffered casualties, but also hundreds of thousands of refugees that had to be settled elsewhere in azerbaijan. This is the biggest possible issue for them. They feel they have been victims in bismarck and want to return to their homes in this war and want to return to their homes. I wonder, you must have been in touch with many friends, family, and journalistic colleagues in azerbaijan. How are they reacting to this . The public mood is that there had to be war. If there is war, we will unite with the army, the government of azerbaijan. That is something that the government was probably counting on becse with the social problems, the following price of oil, the war probably is the best possible outcome to make sure it that public rallies around leader. After that, what makes what next . It is our children that are fighting now in the trenches. It is our children that are fighting. It is the worst possible outcome in this problem, and that is what the government is not taking into consideration. Making sure that the two nations are as far as possible. To cover a number of stories, we turn to outside source. Heres a story in india, where authorities have responded to a gang rape and murder of a woman. The victim was left paralyzed with a broken spine and after two weeks in the hospital, she died yesterday. Protests have been triggered by what happened next. The police cremated the remains in the middle of the night despite family pleading to be able to take the body home to pay their respects. People went onto the streets, and there have been clashes with the police. The victim was from an underprivileged community. Four men from a higher caste have been arrested. Heres the local magistrate. About four or five women laid down in front of the vehicle carrying the body. I talked to them for 10 or 15 minutes then brought the vehicle to their house. After them, ith their consent only, she was cremated. Her family members were present there. To make this allegation is absolutely wrong. The family say they were afraid of the police and went along with their orders. In the context is that india has seen a series of attacks. This story brings forth the gang rape of a woman in 2012 that led to huge protests. Four men were given long prison sentences because of it. This latest incident promoted the same upset. Chanting, government, come to your senses. When the suspects from the higher caste and the victims are from lower ones, they all they often do not get investigated appropriately. I am it has inspired national outrage. The victim died in the hospital. She was cremated here last night by the police in absence of her family. The family alleges they were not allowed to see her one last time. There is very heavy med. The police have deployed to maintain law and order. They have not allowed the roads leading to this village, they are blocked by the police. Our top story concerns that first president ial debate between President Trump and biden. During the debate, the president made a number of comments, one about the proud boys, he said they should stand back and standby. I do not know who the proud boys are, you will have to give me a definition because i do not know who they are. I say they have to stand down and let Law Enforcement do their work. I always denounced any form of any of that. You have to denounce. That is the president claiming he always condemns White Supremacists and do not know the proud boys are. Those are being contested already because he did not condemn White Supremacists during the debate andid refer to the proud boys. Thanks for watching. See you tomorrow. Byebye.
