Life well planned. The freeman foundation. By judy and Peter Blum Kovler foundation; pursuing solutions for americas neglected needs. And by contrions to this pbs station from viewers like you. Thank you. We start in washington becae american politics continues to reactivity archives investigation into Donald Trumps tax affairs. The president is using his go to defense. It is totally fake news, made up fake. You could have asked me the same questions four years ago i had to litigate this and talk about this. Totally fake news. Well look at covid19 in the u. K. After these scenes in liverpool at the weekend, we will speak to the mayor of the city about whether the 10 p. M. Curfew on pubs and restaurants is working. What we are seeing here is a dedes long dispute between armenia and azerbaijan reigniting. We look at the reasons why. There are so many elemen to this trump tax story. The democrats say the public need to know who the present owes money to as a question of National Security. But just in case you have not seen this New York Times story, there are a number of claims within it. Lets work through some of the most high profile. It reports in 2016, the year mr. Trump won the election and during its first year in office, he paid 750 in federal income taxes. He also paid no income tax in ten of the last 15 years. The times also reports that in his first two years as president mr. Trump made 73 Million Dollars in revenue overseas including licensing deals with millions in countries like the philippines, india and turkey. Those figures raise questions about potential conflicts of interest. The times also suggest mr. Trumps finances are in a precarious position. Within t next four years, more than 300 million worth of loans fowhich he is liable will become due. Well, mr. Trump has responded to this New York Times story. Heres some of his defense. Totally fake news, made up fake. You could have asked me the same questions four years ago i had to litigate this and talk about this. The president may say it is all fake. The new york time has a track record of being very accurate. Mr. Trump followed up that statement with the tweet saying the Fake News Media just like election time 2016 is bringing up my taxes and all sorts of nonsense with illegally and tamed obtained information. I was untitled like everyone else for depreciation of tax credits. Is is federal income tax. Taxes come in many forms, vat, and property tax. The times details i have gone through focused on federal income taxes. The president is correct to say this issue has come up before. Here is a clip from one of the debates against hillary clinton. Maybe he does not want the american people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he has paid nothing in federal taxes because the only years that ady has ever seen were a couple years when he d to turn them over to state authorities and he was trying to get a casino license and they showed he didnt pay any federal income tax. That makes me smart. The president saying that makes him smart. The times reporting suggesting it is indeed the case. Lets be clear. There is no legal obligation for donald trump to release his tax returns but it has become customary and every president since gerald ford has done so. Mr. Trump has broken with a number of tradition since he took over the white house. Here he is during that 2016 debate, outlining why he was choosing not to release the tax returns. I dont mind releasing. I am under a routine audit. As soon as the audit is finished it will be relsed. So, that is not correct. The investigation does provide more details about the circumstances of this audit carried out by the Internal Revenue service, the irs. The investigation stems from a 2010 tax refund worth 73 million for donald trump claimed after declaring huge losses. Now, if the irs were to rule against him he might have to pay back more than 100 million. And, contrary to what the president was saying, if you wanted to, he could release his tax returns right now. Here is an article from bbc reality check this says there is nothing stoppingm from releasing those returns while that aud is underway. Those are the details of the allegations. Lets turn to the political fallout. Here is tom burgess for the financial times. Tom hes doing something that undermines the absolute foundations of our how democracy works. In a democracy, we choose our rulers, and we trust him to take decisions for the collective good, not for their personal financial interests. Where rulers take interest for their own interests democracy breaks down. What we see in the New York Times is the way donald trump is sustaining himself, sustaining his wealth seems to be by monetizing the highest office in the free world to. As you might expect leading democrats have been responded. Heres senator Elizabeth Warren say he knows better than anyone else theres one set of rules for theealthy and corporations and another for hardworking americans and he has taken advantage of it. All you could read or you could read congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez a walking scam, she says. And there is a democrat speaker of the house, nancy pelosi. She is been speaking to msnbc. The public needs to know who the president owes money to. To me, this is a National Security question. Here is the economist u. S. Editor on why that matters. Who leant money to donald trump. A lot of the big newer banks would not have lent him anymore. Deutsche bank lent him some money. But i think what nancy pelosi is right to s is that American Voters probably ought to know who donald trump owes money to. The Biden Campaign has not wasted any time getting onto this issue. The campaigns website is selling stickers say i paid more income tax than trump. Team joe campaign has already produced this video. The ad compares the amount of tax paid by teachers, nurses and Construction Managers with the tax paid by donald trump. Ive been eaking to julia in manchester, political reporter for the hill o how republicans haveeacted to the store. President trump is calling the sacred is. Others are calling it fake news, saying the timing of this is very suspect given this comes one day before the first president ial debate between joe biden and president tmp, but republicans i would imagine have a headache right now because once again they have been forced to play cleanup with something regarding the president. Last week, it was President Trump refusing to commit to a peaceful transition of power. Now there is this issue of his tax returns there wer released in the New York Times where sources gave details about the tax returns. So, republicans definitely on the defense rit now. This is not something they want to be talking about. I just want to be clue. While the president says fake news there is no evidence to suggest the New York Times is fabricating all of this. Its n released its sources but there is no reason for us to doubt what it is saying. No parcular reason. I think the term fake news and President Trumps messaging on this is really kind of reassurance to his supporters right now. I dont think this report is going to change any minds in the election. Maybe it has an impact on swing voters who are Still Deciding that there are very few of those right now. President Trump Supporters will say this is fake news, that they do not believe it, they are suspicious of it, etc. This is President Trump talkg to them. However, on tuesday night it will be interesting to see how joe biden approaches this issue and how joe bidens Campaign Messages on this. Thanks there a much. Next on the program, we turn to the coronavirus in the u. K. A few days ago the government brought in at 10 p. M. Curfew on pubs, bars, and restaurants and already that is under pressure. Here is one of the reasons why. This is a video taken in liverpool saturday night. People are packed into one part of the city center once the pubs shutter at 10 00 p. M. This video from the west end on friday night was a similar story. Crowds gather in the streets. The underground was busier than normal. Liverpools mayor tweeted this picture and said the new rule was making the situation with the virus worse, not better. Well speak to the mayor in a couple of moments on outside source. This is from a nighttime economy advisor for greater manchester. It is clear across the u k this ill thought out 10 00 p. M. Curve from has pushed everyone out of venues with socially distance measures and into streets and off licenses, supermarkets, overcrowded public transport and house parties. Every operator addicted this. Sambolic, he says. Or you can listen to that they are of greater manchester. My personal feeling is that the curfew is probably doing more harm than good and its creating a major incentive for people to carry on partying at home. And that is what we are told is the main place where the virus is spread, gatherings in the home. I think the government needs to give urgent consideration to this. The police, too, have concern. Here is the association that represents people in england and wales. You do not have to be a scientist to know if you close bars and restaurants at a given time, one cut off time, everybody out of the doors and great. Bars and restaurants are completely empty but the streets are full. The handful Police Officers available will have to do with it. Now, some people have said to me, you should just encourage everybody to go home in a nice orderly manner. Im afraid reality is when you mix alcohol with some people resisting, not the majority but some resisting, the rules are being put in place that ultimately there is one public ordinance to kick off, and that will absorb all of the resources for police. We cant deal with the other. Dozens if not hundreds of people out on the streets. During an interview some of the concerns were put to the governor minister. Its very early days since the introduction of that policy. I do hope people who are watching, listening today, and anyone planning a night out this week will think, actually, i really get it. I realize that might seem like a fun thing to do to keep on partying. Doesnt mean it is the right thing to do. Well turn to that issue with the mayor of liverpool. 4000 new infections were recorded in the latest 24 hours while the average number of new daily cases in the past week is over 5000. In the past 24 hours another 13 people of died. Down from 17 on sunday. While some of the current covid hotspots are in the northeast of england and that has thled the Health Secretary to make this announcement. Unfortunately the number of cases continues to rise. The incident rate across the air is now over 100 cases per 100,000. We know a large number of these infections are taking place in indoor settings outside the home. And so, at the request of the local councils, with whom we have been working closely, we will introduce legal restrictions on indoor mixn between households in any settingg. There are concerns about the situation in liverpool. Lets speak to the mayor, joe anderson. Thank you very much for your time. We have seen from your comments you are not convinced by the 10 p. M. Curfew. What would you do instead . Well, i think that the curfew itself, or the closure itself had to be dealt with in a different way. Im not suggesting for one minute that the government intended what happened to happen. But if they are spoke local authorities and the licensing authorities, the city council here, we could have liased with the police. So we couldve staggered the closing times of the pubs. All pubs have different operating licenses. Some 11 00 and some midnight and someone 00 depending on whether you have entertainment licenses. To have a blanket approach and allow everyone to spill out onto the streets trying to get on public transport, trying to get taxis, that often groups going into off licenses and going back to pubs. Sorry, going back to houses or parks and public spaces. As everyone you interviewed has said, was not well thought out. It was not talked to, it was not communicated to local authorities. We ended up with the result we saw last night. If you are suggesting that certain pubs shutter at 9 00 and others at 10 00 and 11 00, first of all, would you not get people going from one to the other which is a problem and second, dont you create a complex messaging set up which is the opposite of what the government is trying to achieve . No, it doesnt. Yes, i accept your simple knock at what im trying to say here. At your pubs are distant outside the city center that operate quite normally. But if you have a pub that has a licensed to operate until 12 00 and one that operates at 11 00, you can close the one at 11 00 to 10 00. Last call, people leave and go in vacate. The pubs that have a 12 00 and stop people coming in at 11 00. That is the type of approach that could have done. What has clearly happened is that we have seen the situation where it hasnt work and we have got people all leaving at the same time, as we used to do half past 10 00 closing, many years ago. That simply has made matters worse. So, the pubs has made matters worse, you say. Tell me about the university students. Has their arrival made the situation worse as well . Yes, i guess it has. Because we have got a situation where we are seeing a lot of the young people out on the streets over the weekend 20,000 students to universities over there this week and next week. And that is going to make things worse. In terms of people not following the guidance, not following the guidelines, because, ason eo fyour previous interviewer said, the situation in terms of drinking and following rules do not really mix. We are concerned about the number of infections increasi. We have got 1254 new infections in the last six days. And those numbers are doubling every six days. We have a concern in the city. Having pubs close at the same time, closing restaurants at the same time is just to me ridiculous. Mr. Anderson. Thank u very much. We appreciate your joining us. Joe anderson, the mayor of liverpool, saying quite exclusively that the governments 10 p. M. Curfew on pubs and restaurants and the governments decisio to allow students to go back to university in this case in liverpool, both decisions he says has made the situation with covid19 worse in the city for which she is mayor. Now he is mayor. We will talk about a new pledge 65 countries have signed up to. The idea is to make more commitments to protect wildlife and habitats. Well explain how this is going to work. Now, children in zimbabwe have gone back to school after six months off. But some teachers are on strike. Lets hear from our bbc correspondent. In the capital today, the strike seems to have been quite patchy. In some schools there were teachers teaching but in some of the schools that i had witnessed the students were just sitting in the class and there were no teachers to teach. They were obviously the preventative measures had been ken with handwashing as well as the temperature checks, but the greatest concern is that schools were open specifically in phases to allow for those that are wng their Public School exams to get teaching time before those exams happen in december. But, with that strike that has put all of that in doubt and there are some concerns about the parents that i spoke to about whether their children will pass. They say, first it was covid. Now it is the teacher strike. Welcome to outside source. Our lead story is that the New York Times reported that donald trump eight 750 in federal income taxes in the years before and after he became president. Mr. Trump says that his fake news. Now, i want to update you on the wildfires in california that have burned through more than 1. 4 million hectares year,. Far exceeding any other year in the states history. These are pictures from the napa valley wine region. These fires burn through 4000 hectares of land and hot winds are forecast. Here is more from authorities. We have had an increase in the winds, along with increase in temperature and lowering and relative humidity is which has increased the fire behavior and the fire has jumped and is working its way towards those more populated areas. There were three fires which merged near santa rosa that led to mantory evacuations in napa and sonoma. This is what that looks like from above. Thousands of hectares burned and the fires are still out of control. This video is from the napa county sheriffs office. He came with the cap should never wait until the last second to evacuate. Hundreds of residents have left. Others of state to defend their homes. This is one of them. That is what i am doing. We got along hose out here. Trying to keep it wet. And hopefully do not end up like the poor guy right across the street, the whole house went up in flames about five minutes ago. These picture show us what that looks like. This was ctured by kent porter for the Santa Rosa Press democrat. This is one of many homes destroyed. The fire and so fast up the hill that impacted the structures. These are big homes. 2500 square feet. 2000 square feet. They are on a ledge, i can. An and canyon. When they get going, the winds are 50 miles an hour in the impact is they are so close together that they just took off. There s not much they could do they did a great job. They saved a a lot of homes on the oer side. They did in amazing job. But, unfortunately, they lost, anywhere from 10 to 11 structures on that street. And, kent, when you are taking these photos, how easy is it to move around, to navigate from one situation to another . You know, you are wearing all the ar the firefighters are wearing. The only thing you do not have is that hose and the tools, but you have the fire shelters, the nomacs, the helmets, the boots, the gloves. So, its kinda, you feel like a mummy. But you get used to it. But, you kind of get, we have such a good law in california, 509. 5, that allows us access to show people what is going on when they have been evacuated. So, its actually pretty easy to move around. It is a little dangerous during the fire. It was pretty dangerous last night. Do look up his work online. Now, lets spend a few minutes focud on a decades long dispute between armenia and azerbaijan which has just reignited over the region. Dozens people have been killed in the last three days which both sides accuse the other of starting. These other fiercest clashes since 2016 in a region that provides crucial transit routes for ga to the international market. S and oil it is recognized as part of azerbaijan. It gets complicated from this point. It has been controlled by Ethnic Armenian sister early 1990s. Since the early 1990s. Russia, an ally of armenia is calling for a ceasefire. Turkey is pledging support for azerbaijan. In armenia is accusing turkey of directly supporting the azeri military. Lets hear from turkeys president on the issue. Azerbaijan i condemn once again armenia. Which has attacked under versions territory azerbaijans terrory. Turkey will continue to support his friend and brother wholeheartedly and with whatever means possible. It is time to end the crisis in this region. This region will once againave peace and calm, following this with the abandonment of all azerbaijans territories. Any measures of propositions beside this will be unfair and unjust. Next is our reporter on armenias response. There was a strong worded statement that was issued by the Armenian Foreign Ministry. It accused our subversion of accused azerbaijan of launching the latest offensive. The Armenian Foreign Ministry says that the president from azerbaijan has publicly denounce these protests and has now resorted to military means of solving this conflict. Well, matthew rise is a former u. S. Ambassador who worked as. A mediator on a prospective Peace Agreement for this region here he is explaining for us russias role. Russia is like the United States and france supposed to be an impartial mediator of the conflict. So, its no so great that russia might depart from that mission. But, nonetheless, so turkey, turkey has not been part of the ltilateral negotiations for a Peace Agreement under this osces group. So, what has happened in the last couple of months is that, as tensions have heated up, after, as i mentioned military clashes in july, the United States did not really get involved. It created a diplomatic vacuum. So, what has been have subsequently is that russia and. Turkey have been filling that vacuum russia on the side of armenia which is a treaty ally of russia under the collective Security Treaty Organization and turkey supporting azerbaijan. Next i want to tell you about leaders from six to five country who signed up to a plan to sigh of wildlife and habitat to save wile and habitats from the threats of climate change. The u. K. Says it will increase the amount of land protected from development from 26 to 30 by 2030. Here is the u. K. Prime minister. We need not just good intentions but real action. We must act now, right now. We cannot afford to dither and delay. Because biodiversity loss is happening today and at a frightening rate. If left unchecked, the consequences would be catastrophic for us all. And the u. K. Is one of 65 signatories. You can find out more about the pledge on the bbc news website. Thanks for watching.
