Bbc news, washington. Jane joining me now for more on the president s push to replace Justice Ginsburg is Republican Communications strategist who was part of the tthat helped get Justice Neil Gorsuch confirmed in 2017. Thank you for joining me. We are hearing, the bbcs broadcast partner in the United States, cbs news, reporting that federal judge Amy Coney Barrett is expected to be President Trumps nominee to fill the open Supreme Court seat, according to multiple sources. You know her. What would she bring to the court if that is the case . I think that amconey barrett would be an outstanding justice if she were conrmed to the court im sorry, Amy Coney Barrett, would be an outstanding justice if confirmed to the Supreme Court. If she i nominated tomorrow, it is going to be a race to get her confirmed. She is quite an accomplished individual. She was nominated and confirmed to be on the seventh circuit court. And three Senate Democrats voted for her during that time. She comes from new orleans, louisiana, where she is now married. Has a mother of shes a mother of seven children. Two of them have special needs. She is known as a catholic. She went to Notre Dame Law School where she also, during her federal career, has served as a professor and has been named outstanding professor of the year several times. She clerked for anthonys glia and will likely follow in his footsteps as someone who follows the law, as what they call an originalist. Jane you know how tough these confirmation hearings are and this is going to be done in record time. What are the challenges here . There is a number of challenges here. The first challenge is that, tomorrow, if it is indeed her as the nominee, she has basically two opportunities to showcase who she is to American Voters and to senators confirming her. Tomorrow will be the nominating t press event that will ppen at the white house where she will speak and tell her story. The other opportunity will be at the Senate Judiciary committee hearing, where she will spend three days under some pretty hot spotlights answering questions for eight to 10 hours a day, which is quite something. Additionally, she will let be having to visit a number of senators that will want to meet with her and ask her questions about her career and her outlook on the law. All of this has to occur before the election, which is unusual. The average elect the average nominee confirmation cycle takes from 68 to 71 days. We are abbreviating that to the high 30s right now. Thats quite sething. Im thinking thats jane as we know, this is a usually controversial move by republican whatdo you think, briefly, could be the political cost for some of those in vulnerable seats down the ticket on november 3 . There are both pluses and minuses. On the plus side, having republicans energized to come to to actually vote for those senators for supporting President Trumps choice for the Supreme Court, that is significant to have voters come to your aid. The minus is that democrats will be energized as well. We will have to see what the enthusiasm level will be for those voters getting out to the polls, but for republicans, they want to see a nominee on the bench. I think it ends up helping some Vulnerable Senate republicans and maybe not others. Jane ron, thank you for joining us, especially as we had some breaking news there. Thank you. Lucy williamson, bbc news. Jane the United NationsGeneral Assembly this week, xi jinping has said his country had no intention of entering a cold war with any other nation. The assembly was opened by the u. N. Secretary general who without naming chinar the u. S. Warned against rising tensions. So what is the current state of the relationship between beijing and washington . Our World Affairs editor john simpsogives this assessment. John chinas newfound strength is everywhere. Confronting taiwan and hong kong. Taking on australia, japan, india. Sparring with donald trump. They let the plague out. John china uses its economic muscle right around the world. This week, it was accused of ordering barbados to ditch the queen. In the years where china was building up its strength and wealth, its official slogan was a modest one. Hide your light, and bide your time. In the past 10 years, as chinas strength has grown, the official slog has changed. Now its strive for achievement. Should we be worried . The leading chinese dissident is now in exile in cambridge and thinks the west is so dependent on china, it is incapable of resisting. The rest west should really worry about china from decades ag now, it is already too late. Theres almost no way f the west to stop them. This kind of profitmaking business and to simply cut it off, it will hurt deeply. Thats why china is very arrogant. John china sees it differently. It regards itself as a developing country, only now taking its rightful place in the world. Sorry for the wait. John a newspaper writer closely linked to the top chinese leadership. The situation is tense. That is a fact but we are not confronting the west as a whol the west does not equal the usa. I think the hardline attitude of the usa is in part caused by its election politics. John yet, hes pretty hardline himself. He told me that under certain circumstances, china could use military force to invade taiwan. As for hong kong if the violent protesters threaten police lives by throwing projectiles and petrol bombs, believed the police should be allowed to use their gun and they should open fire. Power is being fragmented between nations. John do such threats imply a new cold war . One british former u. S. Secretary thinks not. There are areas where china needs to be confronted but there are other areas where there is room for cooperation. We have to take very seriously a robust analysis but one that does not fall for the easy, but i think false idea that a cold war is the right way to analyze and understand chinas rise. John the key seems to be the u. S. Election. Directly that is over, we will see if the winner wants further confrontation with china or more coexistence. John simpson, bbc news. At the brack lives Matter Movement gains momentum, a debate about the history of Racial Justice is also underway. Teachers and School Districts are jostling over how americas history of slavery should be taught in schools. Dan President Trump is pushing for patriotic education. Our children are instructed from propaganda tracks that try to make students ashamed of their own history. Dan critics s one problem is that some American History textbooks have failed to give students the full story. Its amazing that overt racism continues to be representative in the curriculum, in the textbooks we are giving our students. The book also includes this map, referring to enslaved africans in 1775 as immigrants, alongside the dutch, the scottish and the germans. To refer to them as immigrants insinuates that they chose to come. Students are being taught a complicated story about slavery. Dan a 2018 report explored the state of history curricula across the u. S. 97 of teachers agreed that slavery is key to understanding American History, but 58 said textbooks fell short. So, how can the two sides have such contrasting views about what is being taught in u. S. Classrooms . Well, there is not one national curriculum. Not only do we have a national curriculum, but even statelevel, but are states, about half of the states are socalled local contl states, which means decisions about setting social studies curriculum are devolved down to the district level or sometimes the building level. Dan in a country deeply divided over polics and race, it not surprising that there is local control over how history is taught leads to starkly different outcomes depending on where you live. The major book companies, the tone that is set by them is set by their largest consumers. Texas being one of the largest consumers of textbooks. Dan remember that history book whh called slaves immigrants . Thats one that was approved by the board of education in texas and then used in schools in other states, too. They have a texas their history books represents that texas status quo and then those history books are adopted by other schools who dont have that Texas History status quo. Dan amidst the debates of politics, some teachers refused to lucite of whats most important the kids.
