Welcome to the program. We start with the news the United States has gone over 7 million coronavirus cases, according to statistics from Johns Hopkins university. That news comes as the head of the world or World Health Organization program has warned the death toll of coronavirus could reach 2 million or higher if concerted action is not taken. Asked whetheras unthinkable the number of coronavirus thats now nearing one million could double for a vaccine is widely used, this is what he said. We have said it again and again not just test and trace,ot just clinical care, not just social distancing, not just vaccines, do it all. And unless we do it all, the numbers you speak about are not only imaginable, but unfortunately im and sadly very likely. Lewis lets speak to our correspondent in washington. Did to see you. Distressing numbers. The numbers are really difficult to get your heads around. Guest its a Staggering Number 7 million cases of coronavirus in the u. S. , and by the way, on august 31, it was 6 million. In 25 days, its gone from 6 million to 7 million in the u. S. It has been just the last eigh months from the first case reported to this date when that 7 million figure has been reached. It has been a huge climb for the United States, one of the highest cases anywhere in the world and still, the cdc estimates 90 of americans are susceptible to contracting coronavirus. Lewis that suggests, if tha 90 figure is accurate, that this is far from over . Guest this is ceainly far from over. At this moment, abo 23 states have rising figures of coronavirus cases and so far, every day, there is about 43,000 new cases of coronavirus. It doesnt seem to be anywhere near the end of this crisis. Lewis efore you go, i want to get a sense of the politics of this, where we stand now, because we are use to living with the virus, learning different strategies to cope with it. How is this playing in the u. S. . In europe, we are repairing for a second wave, but it doesnt feel like it has quite hit yet. But the numbers are increasing and there is a sense of weariness, lots of people who have come out of lockdown for the first time might be going back in. Where do things stand on that emotional level for people in the u. S. . Guest the coronavirus is heavily politicized in the u. S. President trump is holding rallies, sometimes in the open, sometimes enclosed areas where no one is wearing a mask. Thats a huge contrast with joe biden who is doing social distance events with very few people. Because of the state of polarization this country is in right now, being an election year, theres a huge part of the population that does not believe coronavirus is as serious as is is made to be. They think its a scare tactic from the democrat and a assault on their liberties to be asked to wear a mask. So people cannot agree on the facts on how serious this is, that is why there is a wide push to reopen the whole country, to get the country singing again, as some people refer to it, and that is playing right into the code in the political season americas finding itself in an tribalism, where no two people can agree on how serious this disease is or how to handle it. Les a quarter of the uks population is now under tighter coronavirus restrictions after measures wannounced for another swath of the country. Cardiff, leeds, and black puller on the new list of places where people will be banned from mixing with other households. London is now on the covert hotspot watchlist as cases rise sharply in the cast is on the covid hotspot watchlist as cases rise sharply. Reporter the coronavirus numbers are all going the wrong way. Infections, hospital admissions, and deaths are all rising. The latest number haincreased to from 1. 2 to 1. 5, which means every 10 infected people will pas the virus to between 12 and 15 others. The office for National Statistics estimates more than 100,000 people in england have coronavirus in the week ending the 19th of september. Nearly double the previous week. That equates to 9006 hundred new infections per day, roughly three times the number that were being picked up by testing. It amounts to one in 500 people in england being infected, and that does not include those in hospitals and care homes. In wales, it is estimated one in 300 people is infected. Infection rates are rising fastest in england, in the northwest, yorkshire, lonn, and the northeast. In leeds, three quarters of a Million People will be banned from meeting in each others homes or gardens from midnight, bringing the city in line with bradford and other parts of west yorkshire. In leeds, there is a mixed reaction. They are still going to be mixing with people, so it doesnt make any sense, to be honest. I dont agree with the restrictions. Im a key worker, so ive been working through it and you can see some people just dont want to follow the restrictions. Its even more frustrating when that hpens. Reporter the demand for test remains high but fewer than one and three people who attend centers like this one in west london get their results within a day. Londons mayor says the city is at a Tipping Point and he wants a man on household socializing a ban on household socializing. Now as the seasons change, the even the weather is a us. The unsent of weaer, many viruses can survive these conditions and covid19 may have these same effects. Because we meet more indoors, theres more contact with individuals, also increasing transmission. Reporter it will take at least two weeks before we know if any of the new restrictions will have an impact on the outbreak. For now, the coronavirus numbers may just keep rising. Lewis a Police Officer shot dead at a Custody Center in south london the early hours of this morning has been named. A 23yearold suspect who was being processed after being arrested is believed to have turned the weapon on himself. In a statement, the independent office for Police Conduct says the suspect was arrested fors possession of class b drugs and possession of ammunition. He was handcuffed and taken to a custody station. Reporter examining the scene of the murder of one of their own colleagues. Forensics officers working at the creighton Custody Center in south london today. A suspect was brought here at quarter past two this morning in a police vehicle, but he was carrying a concealed gun and he shot the custody sergeant in the chest before turning the weapon on himself. He had served nearly 30 years as a Police Officer and was about to retire. He was rushed to hospital but could not be saved. The motives of family policing is a family in london and across the united kingdom. Today, we police are all morning a great loss. We are all deeply shocked and very sad. Im matt, head coach. Reporter he was a much loved colleague but also wellknown known as a firstclass rugby player and the coach of an east rugby club. He went on about how the last Training Session had been great. His assistant said it was typical of his enthusiasm. He affected 70 people positively. So many people have gained something gat from matt and its going to be a huge loss to the gym, to the rugby cb, to anyone who knew him. We begin our minute silence r our fallen colleague. Reporter the metropolitan police held a minute silence in tribute to the dead officer. Prime minister said his deepest condolences to his family. The Police Federation said the news was utterly devastating and heartbreaking. This is a sad day for our country as we see the tragic killing of a Police Officer in the line of duty as they are trying to protect us and keep us safe. Reporter the suspect is in Critical Condition after having surgery. It is thought at least one special constable was involved in his arrest. As well as the metropolitan Police Murder investigation, the independent office of Police Conduct has been called in. It will be looking at the level of experience of the arresting officers, what was previously known about the suspect, whether he was searched and handcuffed and how he was able to conceal it done until he was inside the custy center. But today, all those involved in policing are in deep shock. Once again, an officer has been killed on duty. Once again, they were number the hidden risks they face when they come to work each day. Lewis and the last few minutes, the commissioner of the metropolitan police spoke about matt and his career. His colleagues knew him as a big guy, big in stature, big in heart. Friendly. Capable. A lovely man. Highly respected by his colleagues. Officers, staff, and of course, by members of the public, including, iay say, suspects he arrested or dealt with in custody. He was very well known locally and he will be remembered so fondly in krait and and in creighton, and missed in the rugby world. He leaves a partner and he leaves an adult son from a previous relationship. Our thoughts are with them. Lewis to the u. S. Now and the lawyer for the family of a black woman killed by police in the American City of louisville has demanded the transcript of the grand jury proceedings in her case to be released and made public. He called for transparency if people were to accept the result. On wednesday, authorities said no Police Officers would be prosecuted for the killing of Breonna Taylor, a decision that triggered antiracist protests around the countryith two officers shot and injured in louisville. Breonna taylors mother, who is too emotional to speak at the press conference, her sister read out a statement on her behalf. And i quote i never had faith in Daniel Cameron to begin with. I knew he was too inexperienced to deal with the job of this caliber. I knew he had already chosen to be on the wrong side of the law. Did he make a unilateral decision to put his thumb on the scales of justice to help try to exonerate and justify the killing of Breonna Taylor by these Police Officers . They murdered Breonna Taylor and until those officers are fired from this department, i promise you, i promise you, we will continue to make these streets hot. Lewis we are going to stay in the u. S. Now. Ruth Bader Ginsburg died a week ago, but she is still making history. The lady Supreme Court justice has become the first to lie in state in the u. S. Capitol building, a testament to her achievement in life. She was honored at a ceremony inside the capital attended by family members and senior officials. Thousands paid their respect as she lay in repose outside the Supreme Court building this week. The tributes were led by family friend, a rabbi who highlighted her groundbreaking legacy in life and death. Today, she makes history again as the first woman and the first jewish woman to lie in state. Today, we stand in sorrow, and tomorrow, we the people must carry on Justice Ginsburgs legacy. Lewis we also saw a friend, but no less heartfelt tribute to the late justice. This is brian johnston, Ruth Bader Ginsburgs personal trainer for over 20 years. And as you see right now, he actually dropped to the floor in front of the casket and did three pushups as he paid his respect. She was famous for grueling workouts which she did twice a week well into her 80s. Our correspondent is at the Capitol Building in washington for more. Reporter it was a small ceremony, by invitation only, and it had to be smaller than usual because of the social distancing restrictionfor covid. It was arranged by the democratic speaker of the house, nancy pelosi. There were family members in atteance as well as lawmakers. Most of them democrats. There was one republican at least, in attendance, the second senior person in the house of representatives. But the leaders of the house and senate on the republicans who were invited did not decide to come. So that highlighted the partisan nature of this issue, even when reflecting on Justice Ginsburgs life because it was a ceremony organized by the democrats and they are very worried about the fact that she has died, aside from her legacy, they are worried about going to be endangered if the court shifts to the right, as almost certainly will as President Trump is going to be replacing her with a conservative justice just weeks before the election, probably. All week, you have been following e coffin lying in repose. How long were the lines of people who turned up to pay their respects . Reporter she had an impact well beyond the Supreme Court halls and the halls of capitol hill. She had a very popular impact, becoming not just a liberal justice icon, but a cultural one with almost a cult following. They had to have two days for people to ce and pay their respects, the public to come and pay their respects. Usually it is one day, but on this case it was to. It was two. To walk past the casket, you had to stand in line for two hours. When i arrived last night, it was the last night for this to happen in the line stretched Something Like seven blocks. I tried to get to the end of it and at a certain point, i gave up and decided i would watch from afar. But i did speak to some people there who spoke in quite somber terms, saying they wanted to honor her. They felt it was her duty to honor her for what she had done in securing the rights of women. She was a pioneer in gender equality and some of them had come from outside washington dc to make that trip. So she did have an impact that was a popular one as well as a legal one. Lewis barbara there, chatting to my colleague karen there. Still to come, we will bring you the story of this hero rat and how he won himself a gold medal for bravery. And johnson, the fastest man on earth is flying home to canada. Cracks i am just happy justice is served. Its a simple fact that this morning, these people were in their homes. Tonight, those homes have been down by serbian soldiers and police. All the taliban positions along here have been strengthened, presumably in case the americans invade. Its no use having a secret service which cannot preserve its own secrets against the world. So the British Government has no option but to continue this action, even after any adverse judgment in australia.
