Doctors treating the poison russian Opposition Leader navalny say he is now out of his medical induced coma. Brutality in the Security Forces of south africa. Research suggests at least one person dies every day at the hands of the countrys police. One community in n york struggle with food insecurity. How they found help fromn unlikely source in John Bon Jovi. Welcome to world news america on pbs and around the globe. Three women took on president Alexander Lukashenko in belarus. Two of them have since fled into a exile after eight highly contentious election. A witness told local reporters that she saw maria being bundled into a van by men who were wearing masks. Her disappearance follows another weekend of big antigovernment protests in the capital minsk. Maria was until today a political survivor. Pretty much the last belarus Opposition Leader who is not in jail and has not left the country. This was her in minsk yesterday, taking part in a fourth weekend of demonstrations. Calling for the countrys president lukashenko to step down. As the day came to an end, the riot policfought back. People were detained, and this morning, she was picked up from a minsk street. She walked to the post office, and she disappeared. A passerby saw that she was taken to the bus. Something like this. And after that, we could not contact her. Her phone is not available. She was part of a train root of women who took on the president in augusts election. Their candidate is widely to have thought to have one the most votes. President lukashenko declared victory, sheeft the country, and a few deities letter, i caught up with her. Do you feel safe here . You are the most prominent Opposition Leader. Are you worried . No, i am not worried. I am safe. When you see the people around me, i am happy and i feel very safe. If president lukashenko is looking to crush the protests by detaining opposition figures, he is likely to be disappointed. Belaruss demonstrations have no clear leadership or structure and just one key aim, to remove an unpopular president from power. Jonah fisher, bbc news. S said she felt safe and days later she disappeared. For more, i am joined now by retired general wesley clark who served at nato from 1997 to 2004. Thank you very much for joining the program. Is there anything that america could do to help resolve the situation in belarus . I think president putin and say i think President Trump could call president putin and say keep your hands off. But president obama did not manage to i think we lost the audio. We will try to reconnect with general clark because the line is gone. President obama did not manage to stop president putin from taking crimea over. Could President Trump really stop president putin from keeping lukashenko in power in belarus . No. There is no way of stopping it, and certainly no force to stop it. That would be the wrong thing to do. Wha you think a conversation between the two could have an impact . Eighthe traditional role of america in these situations is to speak out in favor of prodemocracy demonstrators. Thats right. The role for america traditionally would be to stand up for the peaceful protest. As far as we can determine, all of the protests in belarus have been peaceful. But we have not heard americas role and we know that there have been some concerns expressed by nato and by europeans. It may be that at the foreign secretary level there have been discussions. But in terms of a loud voice and an american moral presence on the scene, no. So that me ask you about another but related story. That is the news coming out germany about alexei navalny, the russian opposition figure who we understand today has come out of a medically induced coma. Again, we have not heard much from the white house in protest to what happened to mr. Navalny in russia. Would you expect normally an american president to speak out on this . We have heard the brits and germans speak out quite forcefully. Well, it would be very reassuring to hear something from the white house, but it has not happened. It is not to be expected. It is the pattern of this white house not to object. Afghanistan or any other action, our president has not stood up to mr. Putin in that regard. There are concerns obviously throughout the state department i am sure and the defense department, looking for guidance and direction from the white house. Ok. General clark, we will have to leave it there. Unfortunately we have few problems with your line breaking up, but thank you for joining the program. We havspoken a lot recently about Police Violence in america on this program, but we want to focus now on new research coming out of south africa. It suggests at least one person dies there every single day at the hands of the police. Many of the incidents go almost unnoticed, but the recent death of a teenager in a park in johannesburg has thrown a spotlight on the issue. Anger spills on the streets of el dorado park. One of their own has been killed. The person with down syndrome had gone to by biscuits when he was shot. We want justice. This is where nathaniel was shot. Just a few meters from his home. His death is the latest in a series of highprofile cases that have sharp south africans since the coronavirus lockdown. The cops went looking for other suspects and when they came out, that is when they foundathaniel suddenly by the truck. They called him over. As he walked over, they shot him. When they shot him, he fell under the truck. Life will not be the same without him. For somebody that could not speak that can walk into a room and change the atmosphere of the room, this warmth, you can walk into any house here and they will not chase him out. They will let him sit. He was a house child wherever you went. Three Police Officers have been arrested, and two of them have been charged with premeditated murder. If found guilty, they face life in prison. Not only are they accused of murdering him, but also a cover up. It is claimed the officers tempered with evidence and the crime scene. [applause] still early days in this court case. It can take years for a ruling to come in, but those invest getting the police said they a determined to see that justice is served. The outcry over nathaniels death has highlighted a deeply fractured relationship between Law Enforcement officers and the people. It should stop in south africa. This is just totally unacceptable. We canontinue to have Police Officers behaving like this, killing people randomly. We are just not going to accept the Police Officers word. Triggerhappy so we have to deal with them as such. I believe now is the time for us to stand together as a community and rally behind the family and stand with them and really show them that now we can make change. Nathaniels family, especially his mother, are clinging to the hope that his death will not be in vain. It is not just in america where you see People Holding up signs that say we are scared of the police. The first formal talks between afghan officials and the taliban are expected to begin this week. The two sides were meant to begin negotiations in march, but a wrangling over a Prisoner Exchangelan and continuing violence have led to repeate delays. The talks follow the signing between the u. S. And taliban earlier this year. We now report on some of the challenges that lie ahead. [applause] two bitter enemies who fought for the past two decades reached a historic agreement in february. But on the ground in afghanistan, fighting has continued. The agreement between the United States and taliban was not a peace deal, just a step towards one. It set out a provisional timetable for the withdrawal of Foreign Forces and was meant to kickstart separate talks between the militants and afghan officials. After months of wrangling over a Prisoner Exchange plan, those negotiations looks set to finally begin. The two sides will be discussing a ceasefire and trying to reach a political reconciliation. This is a campaign suggesting redlines, which should not be sacrificed in the process. Afghans are tired of conflict but also worry any settlement could mean the rolling back of fragile progress on issues such as womens rights. The taliban have to accept the reality of todays afghanistan. If they dont accept i i dont think these peace talks wil have a real result. And instead, the suation could become even worse. Our rights were taken away by the taliban during their five years in power. We were not treated as human beings. Befo the taliban, we had a good life and we fought for our rights. People should remember that history. The taliban ruled over most of afghanistan from the mid1990s until they were overthrown by a u. S. Led invasion in 2001. They governed using a brutal interpretation of sharia law. The Group Insists it has changed, but it is not clear how much. It was good and fruitful. I met one of their chief negotiators last year and tried to pin him down on exactly what form of future government they want to see. Would it be an Islamic Emirate as they previously established . Will you accept democracy . I cannot say no. Because there are many types of governments which were tested in afghanistan. The views are different. Some people want the emirate system. Some people want parliamentary system. But what will be agreed by the majority. How do you find out . How do you find out what the majority want . That will be discussed. That will be discussed. So with the formal government comes a discussion. So we will see how many people are supporting this. The talks could last many months. President trump has made clear he wants u. S. Troops back home as soon as possible. That leaves some worried that the taliban has the upper hand. To protect womens rights in any conflict negotiation, you need women at the table not very many of them taking place in that negotiation. Officials in el salvador invited the press into one of the countrys most notorious prisons to showcase what they say is the governments tough stance on crime. The shocking footage comes as e attorney general says he plans to investigate allegations that the government is negotiating with gang members to reduce the number of homicides. The president has denied those claims. Critics say that such prison conditions are inhumane and could lead to cobit outbreaks. They could not be more squashed in. Officials have blamed agent reveal party for one of several wildfires that are raging in california. A smoke generating pyrotechnic device at the event sparked the older modifier, which has now spread over 7000 acres. It is one of more than two dozen blazes across the state. Californians are currently experiencing a record heat wave with leftist with los angeles reporting a high of 121 degrees fahrenheit. It is very hot. A court in saudi arabia has overturned death sentences issued last year for five defendants in the murder of jamal khashoggi. The five have now been sentenced to 20 years in prison, while three others have received sentences of seven to 10 years. The death sentences were commuted after the khashoggi family probably for gave the killers, hough hifiancee has criticized those final sentences. You are watching bbc world news america. Still to come on this program, the story of how one lakeouse on the outskirts of berlin came to witness some of the biggest events in the 20th century. India has recorded more than 90,000 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, meaning only the u. S. Now has more confirmed infections. More of it comes as indias largest transport system has reopened. It sparked concerns the more public transport could make things worse. We are seeing social distancing being followed, so peop sort of leaving a gap between where two people are seated, for example. During rush hour, this is a system that carries millions of passengers. So as we go along, is it really going to be feasible for people to follow social distancing measures in an enclosed, airconditioned space . And there are certainly worries because the capital itself has been seeing a surge in infections over the past two weeks. Many other parts of the country are experiencing this. The virus has also spread beyond major cities to smaller towns. The hamptons near new york city is one of the most affluent regions of the United States best known for large hses and long sandy beaches. But there is another side to it. Thousands of workers who rely on the busy Summer Season to make a living. Their income has been hit hard by this pandemic, leading to a rise in the need for food banks. And so rock legend John Bon Jovi has stepped in to help. It is distribution day. I am good. How are you . There are no volunteers here, just a handful of workers and staff, including John Bon Jovi. Straight on. Straight on. You got it. The Global Pandemic means his other job as international rockstar is somewhat on hold. So he can devote time and sweat to this project. If you come here, i will show you the idea. We will roll the pallet around. Those are about 40 pounds a case. We usually go by the heaviest things on the bottom. In less than an hour and a half, several hundred kilos are loaded onto trucks and taken to several different food pantries across eastern long island, a process that has happened every week since march. We would be remisif we just wrote a check. We feel like being hands on makes us feel good while we are doing good. And i am a control freak. [laughter] there you go. That is it. This kind of work is not new for john and his wife. Together, they run a foundation doing philanthropic work like building homes and Community KitchensRunning Community tchens. Thank you so much. It is not just the people running the food bank that is surprising. It is the location, too. This area is known as a playground for the affluent, one of the wealthiest zip codes in all of america. The hamptons tell the story of two very different americas. One in which the wealthy can enjoy second homes while taking in beautiful beaches in the summertime. But the other is made up of restaurant workers and day laborers who earn a living by serving the rich. Usually, summer is when the hamptons economy booms. The arrival of the rich seasonal residents means lots of work. But not this year. Local poverty has risen sharply and demand at the springs food pantry is up 300 . There is more people that live here yearround that are at or below the poverty line than there are the guys that own the biggest state. The coronavirus pandemic has ripped open the deep economic device in america for all to see. Yes, we did good. We did good. Even right here in the hamptons. Bbc news, east hampton new york. Hundreds of people gathered on the bks of the grand canal in venice to watch the annual traditional venetian rowing competition that dates back hundreds of years. Covid restrictions did not stop this spectacular procession that filled the canal with typical 16 central boats and custom figures. 16th century boats and custom figures. Had you been on the canal 600 years ago, you might have seen this. The boat is not nearly as grand as the original, but the typical 15th century boats commemorate how he and his wife would have been conveyed along with all the highest ranking venetian officials on occasions of state. Venice is knn for its master balls. But these by its masked balls. But these tell a different story. It carted but people seem careful so i would say we feel rather safe and obviously the show is here. We are having a good time. Crowds were thinner than in previous years, and visitors seemed to have heated requests for faces to be covered. Some saw the advantages. I wanted to attend it for a long time. And i chose this year because unfortunately because of covid there will be fewer people and i could enjoy it more. The racing boats followed the pageant, identified not by number but by color. This resident thinks the occasion is sller, more mber this year, less joyful, though venice she says is always beautiful. And maybe all the boats and people will be back in 2021. I thought it was meant to be empty. That looks pretty crowded to me. Also, Thomas Harding is taking a new look at the weighty subject of world war ii. He has written a Childrens Book about his family who were forced to flee germany and abandoned their home in berlin. 60 years later, he returned to the house and started to write a story of his familys history. A long time ago, there was a little wooden house by a lake. The house was built by a kind doctor and his cheery wife who wanted to live with her four children awafrom the busy city. So i wrote the house by the lake because it has this remarkable history when my family was there during the nazi period. The next family moved in during the second world work. And then the berlin wall was built between the back of the house and the lake, right through the rden. 40 years these people have lived to the lake really close and all they could see was a wall. When i was growing up, my grandmother, she was this largerthanlife character, she would always would always talk about this how she had to leave in berlin and she would take my cousins and me back to see the place she grew up. She sat down on the plane and said, you need to look at these documents. This is my grandfathers passport. You can see here the nazi swastika symbol. This is the passport he had when he came to england. This i my great grandther outfit, a jewish doctor. He was one of the very few jewish people, soldiers were going across firstclass. When the nazis came to power, he could not imagine things going as bad as they became because he was german. This is the neighbor telling my greatgrandfather to get out of the country. The young man came down the sandy path. He took out a key, opened the door, and saw at once that the house needed help. So i went back to germany in 2013 and i found the house in terrible shape. The windows were broken and the walls had graffiti. Over the last six or seven years, i have been working with a local cmunity and members of my own family to first clean up the house, save it from destruction. It is now protected as a monument. The house is now a place of education, a place of reconciliation, where members of the public, schoolkids can visit. It is a chance for them to look at the history, learn lessons of the past, so that hopefully we do not make the same mistakes again. What an amazing transformation. Before we go, like so many other events during this pandemic, covid19 shut this years Boston Marathon down, but it should come as no surprise that the marathon runners, well, they found a path forward. Some of the 18,000 athletes who were set to run in boston have been taking part in a virtual marathon. They can choose their own route and complete the race on the day of their choosing while avoiding the massive crowds. There is even a painted finish line in front of the Citys Library with a message encouraging runners to finish strong. Good luck to all of them.
