Well, i think a a strategist, i see this as a bit and disappointme disadvantage for President Trump. I mean, this is not a fireside chat president , this is not a press conference president , this is a large rally, live events, we know he feeds off that, unscripted, and now hes forced to turn to a more mundane way of just a small screen, talking to people, and thats t who this president is. So im sure that its frustrating for the Trump Campaign at this point, but its the new new. Its the reality. Campaigns are going to have to adjust, and theyre going to have to find some way to make it interesting, not just something that looks too typical these days. Woodruff and, guy guy guy c, the democrats pretty much said all along that they knew there was going to be a tismaller conv event. Does this give one side or another an advanta at the conventions . Well, i think the advantage the democrats have is the Democratic National committee c and the bidepaign have had weeks to prepare for a different kind of convention and i think that preparation is going to bear itself out, whereas, withre thblicans, i mean, donald trump has been delaying and waiting and hoping with a lot of bluster saying he was going to bring people together, regardless, and i think what he recognizes now is that, with his numbers plummeting in florida, he needed to make a uturn and move in a different direction. Le woodruff wells talk, both of you, about how the campaign is different because of the pandemic. John brabender,he candidates cant go to people in person, theyve got to communite online. What does that mean . What is st by that . Well, we dont really get to kick the tires. Too much of the campaign, now, is going to be edit versions o what we see with the candidate. Frustration for the trumpis a campaign, i think they believe that, if joe fbiden ced to not talk with the teleprompter, is forced to have edit content where they can take mistakes out, that peoplwould see really some of the problems why he shouldnt be president. I think the open it is truetrith presidenp. Hes a live candidate, he can be entertaining, he can bend interesting,e knows how to steal the news cycle, which is much easier to do with a bigll than it is online. So the real problem theyre gog to have is h to make effective content that competes with h. B. O. And netflix and, you know, public broadcaing . What ar challenges ofcecil, trying to make a Campaign Compelling online . We shat, some people are saying, relatively clever twosome between president obama and Vice President biden. What kinds of pressure does this put on the compains to make it it interesting . Well, i think the first big pressure i ihe the fact is a lot of inperson organizing that cant happen and campais have to move to a more digital ornizing philosophy where theyre using platforms to reach the most interesting way to talk to people is btalking to people they care about and hearing from people they care about. And thats the role a lot of independent groups and outside organizations have made to get people interested in their particular issues is really criticvi to th president s success and its what 2017, 2018 and 1 have been about as thiscrats prepare for election woodruff and maybe picking up on that, but, john brabender, you were telling us earlier that you dont think the campaigns have done a great job so fargu ng out how to digitally be persuasive to personaze their appeal to voters. What did you mean by that . Yeah, well, look,ey e excellent at raising money talking tosupporters andt at getting them to want to be active in campaigns and so fort at they havent become are great content producers, and i particularly think of the 18yearold to 30yearold voters, which is actually going to be a bigger part of the electorate this time than four yearth ago. Grew up digital. Theyre not watching cable news. Theyre more likely termine their political ideology watching the daily newshour e daily show or cnn orphans than their communities. Im not seeing that with either campergn. I think s an opening for whatever campaign effectively starts doing that. Woodruff guy cecil, how do you see the campaigns doing on that front, in terms of tailoring the message, whether s the Younger Generation or the older folks, tailoring it in a way thats going to capture peoples imagination . I think theres two important parts here. Mber one, we know voters under 35 are strongly supporting joe biden, so we have a real opportunity here to reach out to those votersbut i also think its where you see a strategic difference between the Trump Campaign and the biden campaign. For the last three years, the Trump Campaign has used online to rae money, sell maga hats and really talk to their se, whereas groups like priorities, the group that i lead, have actually been adrtising in michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, talking to persuadable votersnd talking to those voters that sat out in 2016. So i think this is notonly a tactical difference in terms of how were talking about using online, its strategic difference between solely trying to get out your base versus trying to buildest, broadest coalion of fairminded voters possibly and i think well see that ofreflected in the typ content that gets run over the next three months. Woodruff very quickly, in just a few seconds to, each one of you, the fact that early voting is going to be such a big people dont want to show up to the polls in person, john brabender, how much mo t pressure doet put on the campaigns to do Something Different . And thats insulting, and im going to stop doing it. But the point is that we would get asked to do that a lot. In you tried toa reason not to patank, like youd try to be like, well, it says the character gr up in milwaukee, so i dont know why. And theyd be like, yes, but you know, its funnier that way. So, wh i got called to audition for the daily show, it was o i started the day off writing a letter to my exgirlfriend, because i found out that shed gotten engaged, and i was really depressed about it. I got a phone call, and it was my manager saying, the daily show wants you to audition. First of all, i was having a miserable day. Second of all, i thought the me, because i was, like, aeath trained actor who had done broadway, id studied chekhov, and ibsen, and shakespeare. D so i walk in, and theres jon stewart, and hes like, and hes really nice. And he says to me, have you ever performed in front of a Live Audience before . And i just looked at him with a this contemp i said, dude, ive been on broadway. And he was like, oh, okay, all right, here we go. So i basically just did an imprsion of stephen colbert. Jon hired me right there in that moment, and then i was on that night, on the show. Spstly i played a lot of middle east cordent, muslim correspondent, brown correspondent, indian correspondent. Be re 9 11, i was muslim in the sense that my family was muslim and you know, i came from thatou back, but it was just my religious identity, and most americans couldnt tell e differce between muslim and muslin. After 9 11, then americans started learning, oh, there are these muslims out there, and theyre terrifying people, and theyre out to get us. So then i really realized, oh my god, suddenly now im associated wh this religion that people have no knowledge of, or very little knowledge of, and are demonizing. So i pretended to be jewish. Having that platform, and being sort of able to talk about america from the perspective of a muslim american, was kind of new, because there was so much fearmongering as there is today. Im acting like this is something in the past, when its actually even more today than it was after 9 11. For me, ultimately, i see mysels asryteller. I want to tell that i feel like im not being told in the mainstream culture, and about people who we dont see represented in the mainstream culture as much. Heres the republican mayor of sheriff, they said both we appreciate President Trump considering our Public Health and safety concerns a making this incredibly difficult decision. The white house chief of staff mark meadows also said this is an incredibly difficult decision, but democrats rather are saying really this is coming way too late the Florida Democratic chair says this is really President Trump taking his head out of the sand. She says this was a political unt that really wasted time and this is all egodriven. The president is saying hes taking the step to keep the people safe. I should note that the president is continuing to press for.
