Thank you. Welcome to bbc world news amera. . Im kk i washington im katty kay in washington. The family calls for votes instead of violence. Lets start stop thinking that our voice dont matter and vote. The American Capital has seen some of the worst violence. I asked the citys mayor who is behind it all. We look at how the latest crisis affects americas image abroad. Welcome to world news america on pbs and around the globe. Shop saluted shops looted. Race relations, Police Brutality, and the president urging force, not restrai the killing of an unarmed black man in minneapolis has become a nationwide crisis. The bbc has been putting the latest events into context. Wothe words state of emergeny the words state of emergency seem inadequate to describe whats happening now. Not since 1968 have we witnessed such widespread racial turbulence. If you render these pictures in black and white, they would look like they came from the 1960s. That was a decade when the struggle for black equality achieved such landmark success. The civil rights movemen pushing for legislation that ended segregation across the American South and guaranteeing Voting Rights for black americans, but there was unfinished business. Police brutality has always been hard to legislate against. Africanamericans have never achieved equality and pay in pay, a form of racism has been festering. When the sore is about to heal, the wound is reopened again by incidents like this, and you have to start all over again. And the question is, how much can people take . Many hoped the election of americas first black president would heal the racial breach, but barack obama never wanted his time in office to be defined by the color of s skin. Pres. Trump this american carnagops right here and stops right now. He was followed into office by donald trump, whose political rise started when he disputed whether barack obama was born in america, a groundless accusation. Many reasons explain his victory in 2016, though mr. Trump certainly benefited from a backlash against a black president among some white voters. America is being hit right now by three simultaneous compulsions a pandemic that is disproportionately affecting ople ofolor, the economic shock that is disproportionately affecting people of color, and civil unrest caused by Police Brutality that disproportionately affects people of color. Racial division is americas default setting, so what we are seeing here is not some aberration, but rather the continuation of an unbroken historical thread. Nick bryant, bbc news, new york. Katty they are extraordinary scenes from around the country. Washington saw aot of violence last night, so business downtown in the city have been warned to board up their windows and close early today. Residents are being told that we shouldnt leave our homes after 7 00 p. M. Late last night, i watched looters break into shops in my neighborhood and this morning i went out to see the damage. While i was out, i ran into e citys mayor, muriel bowser, who was doing the same. Youve come out this morning. What are you seeing . We started in Lafayette Park after a night of some people here to protest peacefully, but too many here to destroy property. Katty youve ilemented a curfew in the city. Do you think you will have to keep that curfew in place, and is it rking to stop the violence . I think what we saw was moving out a lot of people at 11 00 allowed the police to focus on people who were rely bent on destruction. I think that the curfew had the intended effect of getting the big mass of people moving and going home so that the police can focus on the splinter groups that get out of that protest area near the white house, which is only about two or three blocks each way. Katty mayor, is the violence counterproductive to the people who are protesting peacefully . Ihink it is. As iook at a the news reports now, people are talking about destruction, looting, and they are not talking about the killing that sparked all of the anger. I think it further divides us politically, and the people who want to be in political camps just dont go further into that, because they are talking about violence and looting and not talking about injustice. Katty i was walking some of the looting last night with ung kids that didnt seem to be political at all. How do y stop them . I think its opportunistic, certainly. Quite frankly, i think some of the chaos that was created by people who were pretty organized, i think, that were in the area near Lafayette Square kind of let the other opportunistic chaos sta. Katty what do you mean by pretty organized . Who are you talking about . We saw people that had a strategy about setting fires and pushing our First Responders in various different ways and preventing them from getting to the fire locations. Those things are people who have done it before. Katty do you think they have a political agenda, those people . I really cant say who they who are at this point, but it is definitely it definitely seems disconnected from the killing of george floyd. Katty thank you. Thank you. Katty the mayor of the nations capital, speaking to me earlier toy. I filmed it on my iphone, so i apologize for the quality. Im clearly not a camera person. President trump told american governors they had become the laughing stock of the world for not cracking down harder on the protest, but weve seen people around the world come out in support of the protests. At a time when americas reputation was already in doubt because of its high death toll from the coronavirus im joined by a reporr. When you woke up this morning and you saw these scenes from america, what did you think . Oh, it reminded me of 1968. At the time, we had a black and white tv set. I was living with my parents. We remembered this kind of it looked like a civil r in chicago. We were really impressed, because, for us, at the time, america was a kind of dream and a very stable country. We were very surprised. Thought that was we call the black problem, if you like, was solved and had been solved after the election of barack obama as president of the United States. Remember that he won the democratic primary, beating a white lady, and then he was reelected in a very comfortable majority. We really thought that the black problem was solved in the United States, and it was something from the past. Apparently katty this all comes, of course, just days after america passed the threshold of 100,000 people dying from the coronavirus, more cases here than anywhere else in the world. When you look at it from the other side of the atlantic, what does americas standing look like right now . For us french, its quite comfortable, because we were ashamed that the germans had four times less deaths than us in france. We had the same numbers as italy, spain, britain. But, actually, we cannot lecture america. We had more deaths than y in america. The level is lower in the United States than in france. Katty of course, there is racism in europe as well. Lets be honest. There is racism in frae and the u. K. As well. Is it somehow different whenou look at americanies on fire . No, because we have these kinds of riots in 2005 in paris. It was the same kind of stories. Two teenagers. They committed some kind of crime. They were chased by police. They were electrocuted when they went into some kind of electrical plant. You remember in france the looting also. It was quite different from the United States. In france, they are lower middle class white population that has been downgraded by globalization and who cannot stand that. Its quite different. You cannot compare it. It witwhat is happening in america, which looks like more than the 2005 riots in france an d the 2011 riots in london. Katty we have to leave it there. Thank you very much. This is something being watched widely from around the world. Thank you for joining us from paris. Today, Terrence Floyd paid an emotional visit to the scene where his brother died. It came as a private autopsy report for the family shows that mr. Floyd died from a lack of oxygen. Heres more. Seven days after the death of george floyd, his brother returned to the place where he drew his lasdesperate breaths. Whats his name . George floyd this was more an a stop on a private journey of grief. It was an appeal to end the violence that exploded i protest over thes brutalit of his killing in protests over the brutality of his killing. Lets do this peacefully, please. No justice no peace protests the day before were largely peaceful, but as night fell, demonstrators defied orders to go home and promised to keep coming back. Even if it thins out today, there is tomorrow. You cant kill all 400,000 of us or one million of us. Do you think these protests are different than others that have happened . Yeah, cause we tired. We tired. The curfew has just ended, and police are dispersing the protesters. They seem to have gained the upper hand now and they want to consolidate that control. Its been a week since george floyd died, but its going take more than curfews and physical force to deal with the damage thawas done. Security forces have come down like a hammer here to restore order, but the case of george floyd has refocused attention on the longstanding problem of police violence. Because of this graphic video, which showed mr. Floyd expire in real time as he begged to be able to breathe, the officer pinned him to the ground with a need to his neck a knee to his neck for nearly nine minutes. Derek chauvin already had a bad record, at least 17 misconduct complaints. An official autopsy said this wasnt the direct cause of mr. Floyds death, although mr. Chauvin was charged with at murder. The autopsy released today said otherwise. The public fury has been punctuated by a rare show of solidarity from individual members of the security forces. Here, the national guard. Police officers the country have made similar gestures. No sign of reconciliation from the president , though. Pres. Trump if you dont dominate, you are wasting your time. They will run over you. The president spoke after a weekend of chaos across the country. Literally under siege, with protesters chanting at the door of the white house and setting fires in the capital. In san diego, more than 100 were arrested as police moved in with tear gas in sacramento, more than 100 were arrested as police moved in with tear gas. Today was a moment of her reflection in minneapolis, where it all started. People feel like theyve been here many times before, outrage over a brutal death that dt lead to change, but they are wondering whether just maybe this time it might. Katty this is about george floyd, and it is about so much more in this country, too. Stephen blackowned businesses havent been spared violence e even blackowned businesses havent been spared violence. Protesters smashed the window of janets store. Im so sorry about what happened to your store. Do you want to tell us a little bit about what happened . She is, i think can you hear me . Janice . I dont think she can hear us. We will have to try and go back when we get that line up. Its always complicated when we are dealing with skype calls. You are watchinbbc world news america. Still to come on this program, it is back to children get used to social distancing. Brazil has more than 500,000 cases of covid19 and the number of new debts is rising deaths is rising, but the president remains adamant that the lockdown measures must be lifted. The bbc reports from sao paulo. Last week, the state governor talked about sao paulo returning to some kind of normality, but it is very much in the start. How it works is that the states are divided into regions, and each region is given a color or a phase. It goes from red, which is the strictest phase, where the toughest problems are. Going to blue, where theres much more flexibility. The idea being that the severe states and severe regions can go through those phases eventually and come out the other end. In sao paulo, we are in orange. That means places like shopping malls, car dealerships, they can start to look at reopening. Katty news now from the u. K. England has seen the biggest loosening of the coronavirus lockdown since it was imposed 10 weeks ago. As of today as many as six people are allowed to meet outdoors, open air markets and car rooms have reopened, and some younger schoolchildren have had their first day back in class, but not all parents think that its safe yet. Our education editor has this report for us. Welcoming them back to school. First to arrive, your six year six. For he and his mom, relief that hes backor his last term. Even though its ly six or seven weeks, then another six weeks off, its still nice for him to go and get a little bit of leaing, because we couldnt get a lot done at home. I think im going to like being wi my friends as much as i used to be. All right, off we go. This is his new, smaller class group, socially distancing om the start of the day. We followed them separately from the rest of the school, into a classroom, each to their own desk, no books or pens shared. From lockdown to a new reality. Good morning, everybody. Even assembly is now online, from the Head Teachers Office to the classroom. It is so lovely to have you all back in school. Most year six pupils were here today, but some parents kept students home. They know that school doesnt look normal, and i think there is still fear in terms of the pandemic. Im hoping that the more we can show that school is successfully open at the ment and it is safe that more parents will send their children back. Through the day, washing their hands. No noisy playground at break time, just small groups. So, they are back with some of their friends, but having to keep their distance, and they cant mix with any other children in this school. So, although this is a day that many of them will have been looking forward to, its not backtoschool as normal. We are more spaced out, whereas we are usually quite close together. Makes me happier, because i know i get to, like, see the people that ive been with my whole entire life. In wal, theres no date for schools to open. Scotland and Northern Ireland start their return in august, leaving dads like martin homeschooling his son, samuel. We are trusting schools to give us what we need, and we are following that lead. I think the thing thats worrying me, school isnt just about lessons. Hes missing his friends and the social aspect of school. Lessons under the trees. But despite precautions like this, morning still warning still that england has taken this step too soon. We are following the scientists who tell us that it is too soon, that Contact Tracing isnt working, and who say that in a fortnights time Contact Tracing cod be working and the level of infection could be half what it is now. The end of a tiring, but rewarding day. Still absorbing how Different School looks now. Bbc news, staffordshire. Katty lets go back to the protests in america. Janice is in atlanta for us. Your shop was attacked by looters. What happened . Actually, on saturday night, at 11 30 p. M. , i was in my business on that evening. All of a sudden, i heard someone hit my windows. They threw rocks. But it did not come inside. They busted the windows through the front entrance of my store. I have three windows on the street, so they busted the windows. Thank god they werent able to enter. Katty how bad has the looting been in your area . Noooting was going on in my immediate area, but down the street, there are stores like walgreens and a w others that were vandalized. But right here in my location, thank god, we didnt have any injury entry. But outfront, we were damaged. Katty when youve watched the protests turn violent in the center of atlanta as they have done over the last few days, whats your reaction . Do you have any sympathy for the people who are perpetrating the violence . Of course, i cannot believe it. I am praying constantly, every minute of the day. Even when it happened here, i was praying the whole time that they did not do anything that would be harmful to me. Since im in here. I was down low on the floor. I was actually crawling in the store to get out of harms way, in case something did happen. Because i did find bricks in the store, a brick and a stone. A round rock hit my window and door. It didnt shatter. The brick damaged it completely. Im just thanking god. Im praying for everyone whos been affected by this terrible tragedy. But other than that katty it sounds like it must have been terrifying for you. It was totally terrifying. Yes. Katty some protesters say that, without violence, White America just doesnt Pay Attention to the problems that africanamericans face. Do you think thats true . Well, its so many things to focus on. I think we all need to thank god that its no worse than it is around here, because there could be more violence for us. I just think Everyone Needs to just pray and ask god to continue to watch over all of us as a nation. I pray daily for the worlds peace. All im here for in the communities is just to stay peaceful, focused, prayed up, a nd just trust god, and wait on america, because there will be peace. I pray for world peace. Katty thank you so much for joining us. We wish you the very best. Thank you. Katty before we go, i wish that i could add a simple final thought on these recent events, but outs weve been discussing, these issues but as weve been discussing, these issues are complex. Ive been trying to make sense of it. Last night, i watched dozens of young adults will looting shops adults looting shops, just smashing and grabbing. There is despair. I know violence can get attention when peaceful means dont, but no matter your politics or sympathies, there is something heartbreaking about shattered glass on your sidewalks from businesses that were already struggling after the lockdown.
