Thank you. Laura welcome to bbc world news america. Im katty kay in washington. Brazils president remains defiant as cas rise higher. The Trump Administration is banning travel for anyone entering the United States from the country. No regrets, no apologies. The top eight to the british Prime Minister defends his actions in bending stayathome measures. He wont stop down. I have not offed step down. I have not offered to resign. I have not considered it. Katty keeping memories alive. This memorial day we meet an archivist whose work to solve the mystery of those missing in action. Who has worked to solve the mystery of those missi in action. Katty welcome to the program, and happy memorial day for those of you watching in america. The United States marks this holiday with more cases of covid19 than any other country. Just behind the u. S. Is brazil. The number of cases there quadrupled in may alone. Which is why President Trump is restricting travel from brazil to america its a blow to a country whe own president has downplayed the virus. Katy watson is live in san paolo. How is this restriction going down . Katy its a measure of how serious the situation is that donald trump has introduced this temporary ban. Donald trump is seen as a political idol. He sees the u. S. As the regional ally. No doubt this will sting. The government has put on a brave face, saying that they still have strong ties. It has been seized upon by the opposition as international shaming. The situation here does feel like its very much out of control. Sundays sermon was a lesson in love. Evangelical pastor louise, reminding the congregation, which is mostly online nowadays, that they need t care for people both near and far. A fitting message at a time of social distancing. [speaking foreign language] translator we cannot bring litics into church. People ce here with lots of information. True and false. Im not the judge, but i call for peace. Katy on this day of worship, brazils president was dedicated to protecting isolation measures with his flock. And once again, not wearing a mask. The pandemic took a back seat over the weekend. On friday, the Supreme Court released a dynamite video recorded last month. Its being used as evidence into allegations that mr. Bolsonaro try to replacing your member roles senior members of the police to protect his family. He attacked politicians, the press, and laying bare his belligerent attitude. I want everybody to be armed, because armed people will never be enslaved. Katy perhaps most surprising of all, in the two hour video the covenant barely mentioned the coronavirus. These past few days have revealed ugly truths. Not only has brazil become the latest epicenter of the crisis, but the bolsonaro government has shown itself to be unable, even unwilling to lead the country through it. More and more are struggling to get by. His kitchen run by the church used to have 5people turning up a day. Now its closer to 2. 5 thousand. Each and every one of them, their hands sprayed before they can pick up their meal. [speaking foreign language] translator i was working but i got laid off. How are we going to live . Bolsonaro thinks one thing, the others think anoth. Nothing has been done for the people katy this fear that bolsonaros constant call to wheat real been the economy will be responsible for more deaths in the coming weeks. [speaking foreign language] translator people have a right to health and dignified way of life. Its genocide making people decide. What if they get contaminated by the virus or should they go hungry . Katy brazil is becoming more marginalized. The world watching as the president seems unwilling take this pandemic seriously. Katty its a familiar story. We see the economy crashing, the case is rising, the food banks, that you just went to, is there anything that would make president bolsonaro publicly change his mind his course of action on this virus . Katy at the moment, dont think so. At every step of the way hhas been very contrary. He has been outspoken. He does not seem to be wanting to give at all on this. He constantly goes on about the economy. It is a important situation for every person here. That every person i spoke to said you cannot have an economy without people. The people here feel forgotten. Katty is it because he does not believe the science . Katy if you speak to the former health ministers, they said they worked on the science, and that the president disagreed with that. Hes just like trump. He believes that chloroquine is one of the rather knees one of the remedies. He just wants to get the enomy back up and running. He said there will be a big change in brazil and the economy was one of the things he wanted to change. That is something he feels very angry about, that he cannot control the directi of brazil. Meanwhile, he is ignoring the crisis that is getting worse and worse each and every day. Katty katy watson. Thank you, for us in san paolo. Should World Leaders have to stick to their own strict pandemic rules . That is the question facing the british Prime Minister. After we learned his senior aide broke the lockdown to drive to his parents home last month. In a news conference, Dominic Cummings said he did not regret his decision to travel 260 miles with his wife, was ill, and therefore your old son. He rejected any suggestion he underm stayathome orders. I tried to estimate my judgment. I believe i balanced the safety of my family and the extreme situation in the public intest of government. Katty borscht johnson is still stickingy his advisor. The Prime Minister said mr. Cummings had acted within the law. He cared very much about his family and has done the best for his family. As he said himself, reasonable people may disagree about some of the decisions that he took, but i dont think reasonable people can disagree about what was going through his head at the time, and the motivations. Katty what does this mean for british politics . We are joined by our Political Correspondent rob watson. How serious is this for Boris Johnson . Rob i think, potentially, its immensely serious. Its perfectly possible that he has a profound Public Relation problem. Lots of people in the u. K. Thing, hang on, there is one rule for people that live in downing street and one rule for people that live in other in every other street in the u. K. That undermines the authority of the government as it moves forward out of the lockdown. Potentially theres another big crisis, more internally. They have been unhappy about the handling of this crisis, but they have been rested ever since the start of the pandemic. A lot of them have been thinking, borscht johnson an absolutely fantastic campaigner in elections, but is he much good at governance . The other potential outcome is that this fizzles out a bit and there are no more new discoveries about Dominic Cummings. And yes, mr. Ummings is damaged, mr. Johnson is damaged in the conservative government is damaged, but they move onto the next steps, which is easing the lockdown. Katty there have been a l of part just pictures of President Trump playing golf. There has been some criticism of the president getting out and playing golf. I was wondering about this story in the u k i am thinking, why do i care about Dominic Cummings . Its about leadership, isnt it . Holding yourself to the same standards that you set for other people. Rob absolutely. Its about hypocrisy. There has been lots of anger and people up and down the country after they have been lockdown for two months. They think, i could not go and see my dying mother or dying father, what on earth is going on . Talk about anger. There has been vast amounts of critical. Go and have a look at social media. Some of it is very witty, but not the kind of thing you want as a government. I think one of the dangers of this, and this applies to governments all over the world, when the government lays down its next steps, whether its ing some restrictions in place, asking people to go back to work, you can see the danger. People say, well, why should i listen to this government. He is the second most important man in the country alongside Boris Johnson. He did not follow the rules, why should i . Katty and as the country starts opening up, in a way, people will start saying that more. Look, he went to see somebody, its lovely weather, im fed up, i will get out there. Rob absolutely. Anecdotally there is plenty of evidence of that already. You find across the u. K. , Police Forces who are supposed to be making sure people are sticking to lockdown regulations. Saying, what are we supposed to say to people . On the one hand, in some ways, the government is wanting people to ease the lockdown and wants people to start going back to work and it wants to start opening shops next month. All they want is for things to be freer andasier. I read something that said a lot about this crisis. I think you might like it. You will be fascinated by this one. Someone was writing that, Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings are populists who have lost touch with the populists. An interesting comment. Katty a quick look at other news from around the world. The World Health Organization has temporarily halted its trial of hydroxychloroquine as a potential treatment for covid19. The group said it wants to review safety concerns for the antimalarial drug. President trump shocked the world when he announced he has been taking it as a preventave measure. Mr. Trump said that he has now finished his twoweek course of the treatment. The u. S. Justice department is officially investigating the shooting death of an unarmed black man in georgia as a hate crime. Thats according to attorneys for the victims family. Ahmaud arbery was shot and killed while jogging in february. Video sparked nationwide outrage when it was made public a few weeks ago. Three white men have been arrested. China has accused the United States of trying to harm its national security, and warned washington against undermining its interest in hong kong. The u. S. Could impose sanctions on beijing over a new security law. Protests broke out in hong kong against that proposal. You are watching bbc world news america. Still to come, they fled conflict in their own countries to fight aew battle against covid19. We need the syrian doctors on britains front lines. Katty india has restarted domestic air travel as a country tries to reopen the economy. For some travelers, it has been frustrating. Dozens of flights were canceled leaving thousands of people stranded. The fights were withdrawn because there are still restrictions in some of the individual states. Here is more from delhi airport. This is delhi airport, the busiest in the country. The fights were completely shut down for two months. 600 flights are resuming across cities across the country. Various measures have been put in place baggage is are being screene, the staff has been given face shields and masks. For many passengers, this comes as a surprise. I am gog after almost three months. Its a good feeling, but they are very scared. I am sanitizing my daughters every second. Katty doctors come from all over the world. In britain, some arrived as refugees. They fled conflict in one country to help save people in another. The bbc has met syrian doctors in manchester and has this report. Some nightmares never end. Years of killing stretch into more years. Its created a vast refugee crisis, forcing millions to flee. This dr. Is a syrian refugee, now working in manchester. Here he is checkinon a patient admitted with a severe cough. Hello, my name is ahmed. I am checking your chest xray. It does not look like covid. It looks like a type of infection. Arriving in 2014, ahemd and his family ahmed and his family found safety in britain. And he gained precious skills. He has a presence with his other staff that brings ease. Having struggled with mask has will tease, he is well mass casualties, he is well equipped. I have learned how to cope with stress. I have learned how to manage. When i started here i realize it would be very difficult time, because nobody has ever had similar experience. Struck by the connectedness of our world, the syrian doctor fighting covid in britain. We should focus on the differences. Societies with political freedom, and those, like syria, that are ravaged by war and labored under attorney under tyranny. More than half of Health Facilities have been destroyed or damaged. Hospitals have been targeted by the regime and its russian allies. The british surgeon is here wearing the colorful cup, trained syrian doctors in emergency surgery in aleppo. There are so many millions of people as refugees now and they need to go home, but they are too scared to go he. It is a dreadful situation that they are still having to cope with. There is an irony in this. You went there to help them and they are now here helping you. Is absoly true and wonderful. Here and aleppo, working under siege conditions, one of the doctors trained. He became a highly skilled, surgeon. Now he is in manchester, a friend of dr. Ahmed, and study to practice in britain. I imagined that they are suffering. They need help. They need any hand they can have with them. I can understand their feeling now. It is really interesting during these uncertain times. Ahmed has found security here and work you loves, but he yearns for hom a return he knows is impossible while the regime is in power. What do you miss most . My family. My friends. My city. Do you believe you will go back . I can go back there, but there is no one there see them. You know . The doctor is no longer able to hp his own country so helps save lives here. Our good fortune, serious tragedy. Syrias tragedy. Kay its easy in this pandemic that it is hard to think there are other stories going on in the world. Syria is still going through difficult time. And for all of those refugees who have brought so many and so much to the united kingdom, those hospitals are lucky to have them. Today is memorial day in the u. S. Its a chance to Honor Service died in combat. President trump visited fort mchenry in baltimore. The historic battle site was an inspiration for the starspangled banner. Mr. Trump invoked that tune while honoring those on the front lines against the coronavirus. The man who will take on mr. Trump in novembers election also paid tribute today. Former Vice President joe biden left his home to make his first public appearance in two months. He laid a wreath at a Veterans Park in delaware. Chael pierce restores old documents to help peace together information about missing korean war veterans. He has been speaking to my colleague jane obrien. Jane thank y for joining me. How difficult is it to do this detective work . Michael there is usually some sort of identification the remains that they recover. Maybe a tag from an item of clothing. A lot of the records that we are able to send. Dental records. So that goes a long way towards identifying the remains. Jane tell me about the fire in 1973 . What happened and what impact that have on the work to trace people . Michael it destroyed right around 12 million records. It damaged, to varying degrees, about six or seven levels of records. The damage on the files vary from water damage, mold, to some of them that were burned practically to a crisp, with may be two or three inches in diameter of actual recognizable paper. The rest of it would be black. Over the last few years we started using technology. Even on those records, we would shoot a picture of that with digital infrared camera, and it almost looked like a brandnew sheet of paper. Even stuff you could not read before really popped out. Jane when you opened up the document safe of the uss arizona, how does that feel . Michael the uss arizona was sunk on the morning of december 7, 1941. The records that we had from the arizona were salvaged onhe ship. And to still open up a box of those records, and you can smell diesel fuel. Alosso, within some of those records we found sand, small shards of metal. We had a discussion when we first started finding the records. Typically, thats the kind of stuff you want to throw away. But, witthe arizona, that was also part of the historical record. Jane what is it like finding something that you know could locate somebody whos been missing, perhaps even for decades . Michael to know that what i was doing was going to help that veteran either get the benefits that they needed, help their family members get benefits in the cases of repatriatn cases, to bring those guys home, i always get a real sense of accomplishment.
