The rate sword it to its highest level since the great dression in april, as the pandemic battered the economy. More than 20 million jobs were lost in america commit many more than the previous record of 800,000 during the great depression. That means that u. S. Unemployment rate has surged to 14. 7 , the highest since the 1930s. Our Business Correspondent has been speaking with some of those affected. Correspondent americans tend to be resilient, but that toughness is being tested by the coronavirus, the speed and depth of the downturn, uncomfortable comparisons. It is a grave shock and something we need to take seriously. Correspondent it has been a tough month for this single mother. She is now collecting unemployment benefits. Im not sure what will happen next. Correspondent she received a total of 1800 from the u. S. Government and use the money to pay her rent. How much economic damage has this done to you . I am afraid to think about future. For now, im good. I got paid. I will pay my rent, pay my bills. What the future brings, this is something you try not to think of. Correspoent the virus has left countle americans and die your financial straits. The economic pain plain to see at protests like this one in california. Here, they want state leaders to cancel rent for the health crisis. Nearly a third of renters one able to afford monthly housing costs in april. With so Many Americans out of wo, many worry a housing crisis may not be far off. This is the worst housing isis in generations. If eviions continue as normal, this Public Health crisis will turn into a fullown crisis. Correspondent one person works as a contract medical assistant and tell the pandemic took her job. I am one among so many experiencing this. Correspondent she lives in a two bedroom apartment. With no income, she could not pay the rent and was unable to reach an agreement with her landlord. They were not willing to work with me or waive any administrative fees or late fees. Correspondent in february, the Unemployment Rate was at 3. 5 . After 113 straight months of job creation. The coronavirus changed that. The pandemic took with it millions of jobs, wiped out a decade of job growth, and now threatens other parts of the economy. The changeas swift and dramatic, and therere signs the recovery wont be nearly as quick. Anchor for more on those crushing job numbers, im joined now by the chief economist for an organization. Thank you for being with us. You said this was one of the hardest days you face as i economist. How can we compared this with past economic challenges . You cant. We have lost more than double the losses of the great recession, 2008 two 2000 time, in five weeks, in the month of april, really stunning, and those numbers are in undercount as well. The statistical agencies went to great efforts to change their methodologies to capture and estimate the losses among Small Businesses. The losses were accumulating faster than they could catch them. That in the Unemployment Rate, which is also an understatement. Many workers say they are absent from work, which is what you do when youre sick, at home, or on vacation. They actually lost her job. If you add those in, the Unemployment Rate was closer to 20 . We also had a lot of people drop out of the labor force, hispanic, black, women, and that kept the Unemployment Rate lower than it would have been. Anchor certainly this has been concerning for women and minorities. There is a sense that temporary jobs, will they come back . Will they be permanently lost . The issue that many people on furlough and will be call back would be great news if it were to happen, but the reality is that as we ramp up and reopened, many businesses will not run near the capacity they did precovid, especially in a postcovid contagious world we are in, and a high contagion rate. We still have to do social distancing through the summer. Restaurants are being asked to do 25 , 50 capacity. That does not cover their overhead or waitstaff. Disney nights are thursday through sunday, and the bar is the most profitable part of those nights, so the hardest hit of the economy, travel, tourism, restaurants, that will be hard to reopen and recall these lowwage workers hit so hard. Anchor given that, and i think during the financial crisis of 2008, it took eight years to recover the Unemployment Rate to 5 , so how long could this impa america . The real issue is whether we can get more relief to preserve as much of the economy as possible and stimulus on the others this. Investors are begging us after adjusting for inflation are long term treasury bond are negative. They are saying go ahead and go into more debt. I am a deficit hawk, but im sorry, at this time, we need to spend more money to keep the economy intact and have Infrastructure Spending and training on the other side for all the other workers who will be displaced. I worry about all the Small Businesses that will never be able to open again. They will shut down over the summer or have gotten close to shutting down and not able to reopen in enough Critical Mass way to cover their costs, let alone their personnel. Anchor thank you so much for your insight. Until the coronavirus hit, the Opioid Crisis was americas biggest Public Health emergency. Overdoses accounted for 46,000 deaths in 2018. Constantly wanting to use her constantly around and there is nowhere that i can go that is safe. Correspondent andrew kes us to a tent city on the banks of the river. I will go see how everybody is doing. Correspondent it is cold, but Homeless People are leaving shelters because theyre worried about getting covid, exposing them to other dangers. We have come to this homeless camp and were hearing that one of the people here has died, probably from an overdose. I read about it happening, but i did not know who it was. , so people are kind of in a bad place. Elsewhere correspondent elsewhere, facilities are open, but limited by staff working from home. That does not stop the emergencies. We do have a person in there who is currently suicidal and were trying to get some help as quick as we can. Correspondent without support, the woman has suffered a relapse, and staff knoshe is not the only one. All of us in the treatment world are trying to say, how do we prepare for the inevitable, because we know weill see a spike, but what will it look like . Correspondent while we are filming, the Police Arrived to take the woman to the hospital. She has little choice. She was threatening to harm herself and others. Correspondent he was killed in february, by a father and so who claimed he resembled a burglary suspect. After the video was released, protesters demanded their arrest. It would have been his 2h birthday. People do racist things. This is a racist state. But, this is a coverup. Do not get it twisted. This is a coverup by the police department. Correspondent the men armed themselves and followed him. Prosecutors didnt initially pressed charges, but the videos release and public pressure finally led to their arrests. The applied the law to the facts in this case and came up with a solid belief that there is sufficient probable cause to charge him with felony murder and aggravated assault.
