Reporter though the Administration Says theres no shortage of personal protective equipment, the reality isot rwise. Id like a mask like yours. Id like all of us to have masks like yours and these white suits like you have, what do i have on . What is it . Reporter what is that . What is it . I reporter looks like a garbage bag. It is. Reporter thiseeatient to have his breathing tube changed over. And look how much equipment it takes to keep one patient alive. The Critical Care doctor puts on ski goggles to carry out the procedure. Its very, very diflt. Its like something out of the twilight zone. And i dont think any of us eving through it wil be the same. Reporter when new yorkers right where new yor is right now, other states and cities like washington, d. C. , are forecast to follow in the coming days and weeks. Donald trump says theres light at the end of the tunnel. There may be in the worsthit areas. But for much of america, the darkness is yetme to this is going to be the hardest and the saddest week of most americans lives, quite frankly. This is going to our pearl harbor moment. Our 9 11 moment. Only its not going to be calized. Its going to be happening all over the country. Reporter meanwhile, in new york, theyre struggling to mafge the sheer number o deaths. Refrigerated lauries have become makeshift morgues. And a senior healthfficial has warned that burials may have to start taking place inublic park laura for more on the outbreak, im joined an emergency physician in boston. Thanks for being with us. Can i ask for your reaction to 10,000 americans who have now died from ronavirus . Thanks for having me. I think that is a number that venone of us wanted to hear. And it speaks to the severity of how many ces weve had here. Our inability to control it. And that we ve to do better going forward. Unlike other tragedies in the past that have been comred, this is something thats unfolding and so we still have an opportuty to make it better so that the number doesnt climb to an even mo shocking number. Laura dr. Anthony fauci, hes the top Infectious Disease specialist here in america, advising the government. He says were strugglin to contain the outbreak. What should we be doing better . One thing we need to be doing is having better messaging. So that we kno what to do. A lot of people dont know what to do. Would like to say for myself that yesterday the messagerom the queen really provided a lot of information for me about the function of the btish monarchy , i found her word to be stirring and essential and many of uwere grateful. So we would like to see our ership giving us a ecconsistent messagese we see things moving quickly and we ne to see that we are responding to facts on the ound and sometimes dr. Faucis been great, but sometimes hes been fighting an uphill battle and thats not the best case scenario. Laura now the governor here in new york is saying we may be beginning to see ain flatt of the curve. That the death rate has dropped a little bit for two days. Its now flat. At do you make of that . Well, i think that it depends on where you are. New york may be getting to a from ther portion, but we simply dont know. It coulde a blip in data. We neeo see consistent changes in order to make any kind of conclusion of that nature. We also know that there are other hot spots that are brewing. Where i work boston, ere seeing more and more cases understand theyreetting missouri more severe. We wano know thats coming or anticipate it and have the equipment we need to save thebe most n of lives possible. Were not through the worst of it yety anyeans. I dont think anyone thinks that. But its always good news to hear this things are a little bit better. I think many of us are trained to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Laura an example of how anyone can get sick from this, me britains pinister was diagnosed with coronavirus 10 days ago and he has been moved to intensive care tonight. What does it say when someone is moved tontensive care about their condition in general terms . Certainly i would like to say that those of us who just learned abou this are, our thoughts are with the british people and we are hoping for a speedy recovery. What i would say is that being admitted to the intensive care unit is never good news. But it depends on where you are. I work in two hospitals and to reach intensive care sort of level of need would be different each place. So i cant read too much into it. Especially with v. I. P. s. Theyre very frequentlyd. Overtrea lets hope that thats the situation. We dont know. But the things in i. C. U. s can offer would be more medication to suppoood pressure if thats necessary, different options for breathing if theres a need for escalation from just regular oxygen through the nose. Number of a almost like a menu of options at each that each i. C. U. Can do. We obviously know that if anyones ever going to an i. C. U. , its never good new but we know there are a lot of treatments on offer at such facilities. Ura we do know that more men than women are getting sick from th disease. Do you have any idea why that is . I dont thinke know that. I do think that thats a signal, a number that weve seen several times. We also know that older people are much more difficult courses. So its encouraging that Prime Minister johnson is under the age of 65, for example where a cent study that looked at United States found that that was a number sort of in the 60s where things got aittle hairier. So we dont know why men. Theres there are oer small littleignals here and there. Could it be that people with high Blood Pressure or diabete s have a higher percentage of getting bad cases . O be they that appears case. Why, we dont know. The same is true with gender. I dont think we reallyat know y would be. It could be something as simple asocioeconomic things. Do men smoke more . In certain countries thats certainly the case. I dont kw if thats true across the board. Laura and do you know just how long this social distanci is going to have to go on for . Well, i have been very careful about making predictions about the future becae i think that if anyone had a crystal ball, theres many thing they woul have done. They would have shut down borders, they would have sold their portfolios. So im not miss it bf saying when. What i willha say is as we progress, were going to start to have to think anew about how we go about our lives and so were goi to go from incredible incredibly intense social distancing to starting to do things differently. Are we going to have n restrictions how many people middle seats on planes. Whatever it takes, weve got to return to normalcy al at some point but were not there y. When we do, the going to have t be piecemeal so we know were safe. Laura thank you so much for joinings. My pleasure. Thank you for having me. Laura in south korea the number of newly confirmed coronavirus cases has gone down to below 50. But officials there are warning against complacency. As the bbcs now reports. Reporter within the last two weeks over half of all the cases south korea are people returning home from theikes of europe, the u. S. And canada. However, the vice Health Minister h issued a warning. They are extremely worried about life here islowly getting back to normal. You must remember there has been no lockdown here in south kea. They advised people to work from home whereossible, which people have been doing. They advised people to wear t mask stay socially distanced, two meters apart. And most people have been doing th. However, there have beent sligh breaking of the rules over the weekend as this beautiful spring weather arrives. So theernment has advised today for peopl to maint sn theseial distancing measures for justnother two weeks if they can. Laura as yeeve been reporting, britains Prime MinisterBoris Johnson has been moved tons ine care tonight. This comes as hospitals across britain are struggling huge influx of coronavirus patients. Oural med correspondent has been inside a top London Hospital to see how tyre dealing with it. Heres his report. Reporter this used to be a Recovery Area for patients after surgery. Now its an intensive care unit for covid19 patients. A huge part of the hospital has been tansformed in ord to deal with coronavirus. Ive been in intensive care and ive never see anything w. Like this. Never seen it in such a short, con den condensed period of time. Reporter many of the patients here are elderly or haveun rlying health problems. But not all. I think perhaps i was a bit naive when we started. I had assumed that it would be the older and the sicker in here. ve got a mixture of people from their 40s to people in their 70s. A lot of them have high Blood Pressure and diabetes or [indiscernible] disease. But some of them are coming through who are young f and. Reporter the patients here have severe, pneumon inflammation of the lungs. They must be heavily is he dated while on a venlator is he dated while on a ventilator, sedated while on a ventilator, a machine that tas over their breathing. Patients can spend twoeeks like this. Many drugs are being tested but throe is as yet non treatment for coronavirus. It oxygen and organ support and amazing nursing care really. Reporter one thing that does help is turning p theients onto their front. It increases the oxygen getting into their lungs. What seems like aocimple prure takes time. And lots of payers of hands. Pairs of hands. With ventilated patient extreme care is needed. All of this while staff wear full personal protective equipment. Thats great. He reporter only barrier against coronavirus. Everyime a doctor orurse goes on to the unit, they must don full safety gear. You cant weark this and wor for more than a couple of hours, because youve got a crushing headache, youve got a dry mouth. You have to get. Reporter staff write their nas on their aprons so they can be quickly identified. So theres an emergency on the i. T. U. And the head of Critical Care, were sing by a walky talky g whether he cive a second opinion. But needs to be there. So the full kit has to be put reporter they use walky talkies because theirdvisors mean they cant communicate on phones. It is draining, physically and mentally. Itseally hard and some of our staff really cant cope with it. You know, weve gotr huge num of nurses, doctors and physios and not all of them can deal with it. So they can oy spend a short time or not just any time. Its not uncommon for some of our staff to have panic attacks. D just finding this so, so stressful. We have to really support people. Some people just cant do it. Reporter despite the possible risk to theelves, the medical staff carry o 12hour shifts, 60 hours a week are the norm. They worry about the patients, aboueach other, and about those they love. I think its very hard on our families. My kids are at home, my wife, homeschooling. Its easy in a way for me. Im doing my job, im busy all day. Theyont really know what its like here, what whether we bringing home the virus. Theyve just been amazing. Just let me do what i need to do and i just amdi increbly grateful to them. Re rter what is striking here is the sense of calm. In the face of adversity, doctors and nurses simply get on with the job. The staff here are deali with the biggest challenge ever faced by the n. H. S. They can save many of the parents patients, but sadly not al o them. And still, more patients keep comingvery day. Laura that was fergus walsh rertg. Onef the Biggest Challenges of this outbreak, whether there in london or here in new york city, is getting medical equipment to where its needed most. Joining me now so talk about this isemocratic senator chr murphy from connecticut. Thanks for being with us. You have said that people will die in this outbreak because of the president s inaction on medical supplies. 10,000 people have now died in america. What do you want to see the president o differently . The president needs to take ntrol of both the manufacture and distribution of emergency medical equipment. I appreciate you having me today because this is a crisis in the United States and around the world. Part orithatis is driven by the fact that we dont have enoughpr personaective equipment for our hospitals and that puts them at jeopardy but it also mns that we cant test as robustly as we should. Cause in order to test, you need to have masks, facehids and other personal protective equipment. So the president needs to take control of the manufacturing anu ly chains and that would mean we could produce more of these goods, but also we can ha make sure it ends up in the ands of those that need it the most right now the hospitals in the states that are acquiring the equipment are the ones that are bidding the most amount of money. But there unfortunately are plenty of places that dont have a lot of money to throw around, but who have real high need right now. So we need to federalize the ma ofacture and distributio critical medical supplies. I dont understand why the laura senator know that the president wont nationalize the supply chain. He wants private companies to have their say. So what impact does s that having in your own state of connecticut where new haven is emerging as a hot spot . We are certainly going to get worse and worse as more of the viru comes up from new york and connecticut. Right now wblare scrg, trying to create our own supply chain. Iveiontroduced lengthl shah i Hope Congress will tail legislation that i hopeil Congress Take up in the next emergency package that will require the president to federa sze thatply chain and require him to use his authori to produce moref thi but what were finding in connecticut is that we are getting outbid by other states and that deliveries from fema that we thought were on their way are suddenlyth canceled a last minute. So were in a bad position in connecticut. And were in a badio pos in part because we are competing states and thousands of hospitals for the same set of goods. Es got to be a more reasonable, rational way to [talking simultaneously] laura sorry to interrupt you. Thank you so much for being with us. We appreciate that. Well, as hospitals in new haven, europe and the u. S. Are overwhelmed withorirus cases, its having a ripplele effect on other patients. Takegnant women, for example. Who are very anxious about what that means for their divery. When its the birth of your child, you want to feel like youre in control. Ot youre thats pretty scary. The covid19 outbreak has obviouy been very terrifying, especially for pregnant women. I would advice for every ue to cop with a plan, come up advise for everyone to come up witam a plan with theiry and loved ones and their o. B. s. Reporter we talked towo pregna n about how theyre feeling and how the coronavirus pandemic is making them rethink their birth plans. My name is courtney. I am 22 years old. I am expecting my first child. Pregnant. Ady a highrisk its very likely that ill be have to be a csecti or ill go into preterm labor. I went from feeling so prepared and then a soon as this hit, well, money has to come from somewher my partner got laid off temporarily because of the virus. I want to be proactive and prepared for things but we dont reporter pregnancy is already a stressful and challenging time. There are major life changes, body changes, emotional changes. And pregnant during a pandemic brings all kinds of new challenges and stressful situations too. Reporter this is doctor, a former Health Commissioner ofe baltimnd planned parehood. This is also person for her. Im 38 weeksel pregnant m at the moment. Pregnant people are still medically vulnerable bec se of changes to their immune system, to their physiology. And shouldake extra precautions the way that other categories of people who are medically vulnerable should take precautions as well. We believe based on theimited data we have that there is no because there isnt covid19 ound in am knee otic fluid. Its amniotic fluid, not in breast milk. But these are preminary studies and theres a lot we dont know about the impact of covid19 on pregnancy. Terrifying gnan is enough because of the all the things that could go wrong. Reporter shes even more at ec riskse of her age. Im in myla mid to te 406789s reporter she lives in new york. The epicenter of the virus in the United States. Theres always this fear of infection and contaminationment youre stillealing with medical staff. You woer how much crosspollination there is. Utunately when we lookwh at has happened in other counies, there are certainly documented cases of peopleng ha delayed care during pregnancy or even foregoing certain typescare during pregnancy because their providers have simply not been available. Tw is the time prepare. This is not a time to panic. There are sps that we can take to prepare ourselves and our.
