Now to an earthquake measuring six point four in magnitude that has struck Southern California. Seismologists say it is the most powerf hit the area in 20 years and another big quake could follow. Residents have posted images of damage on social media including footage of houses on fire. Thepicenter was about 150 miles northeast of los angeles. What is the latest on the damage the earthquake did . Reporter the authorities have reported there is no lossoflife, fortunately so far. Dozens of calls have beence ed in the Fire Department in ridgecrest, which was the city closest to the epicenter, but we have seen this group in broken glass, maybe broken windows, but nothing major to report so far. Reura tell us what you experienced over tn l. A. As the earthquake struck 100 miles away. Reporter actually, it was a nree magnitude earthquake los angeles, however it was very strong and long. I am on a 15th floor of a building and it is a big building. It was like a hammock, swinging like it was nothing. Definitely some residents here were pretty alarmed,se there is this expectation of the big o which is the earthquake angelenos ha been expect for expecting for years. Laura are you experiencing aftershocks or have you been warned you could experience some . Repowe have been warned. Dozens of aftershocks have happened so far. But they are pretty weak. If you couldnt feel that whe one in the beginning, it is likely you wont feel the rest. However, the authorities here in lifornia did warn that today at 5. 5, there is a 5050 chance a 5. 5 earthquake happens again, so we have to be watcher ourselves. Laa patricia in los angeles, thank you. For more, i spoke earlier with theoretical physicist michio kaku. This is the largest to hit Southern California in 20 years. What is your assessment o sf the size ale . It was a 6. 4. As you mentioned the northridge earthquake of 1994 was quite severe and caused billions of dollars in property mage. Fortunately, the damage reports coming sn so fm to be that it is rather minimal. The epicenter of the quake was about five miles underneath the surface of the earth and because it was close to the surface, it caused moreamage than an earthquake that would be more deep in the earth. What makes people jittery is not the fact that this was not the big one, but we are overdue. We are overdue for the big one, and that is what puts everybody on edge. Anothero do you expect earthquake could possibly follow this one . Wexpect aftershocks which are taking place now, but a much biggerra one come to the 7. 9 or 8. 0 earthquake that ncisco, thatan f could very well happen again and the laws of physics seven to indicate seem toe indic that yes, california should expense a big one. We dont know when or where. Laura they say the earthquake happened about 100 miles away from l. A. How much more damage could it have done in a densely populated area . Compared with the northridge earthquake that caused billions in propertyff damage, ted the infrastructure, causing widespreadas dtion, fortunately this one was roughly 150 miles northeast of theos angeles area and it was not densely populated, it was not a dense industrialized area. Laura given the very high potential for eal. Hquakes in the region, is there technology that can help us to predict that an earthquake will be on the way . Unfortunately, it is black magic and voodoot rying to predactly when an earthquake will take place. We can get some morning. The japanese for example have experienced looking at certain sensors and patterns, but again, the warning isn a scale of minutes, not days or months. Presently, its black magic predicting when an earthquake will hit, but we do know it will hit. Laura thank you so much for joining us. The nks have been brought in, the jets are ready, the fireworks are being set up. As we know the president a , times can ittle sensitive when it comes to the issue of crowd sizes, although i must say, i have been talking to rnme supporters who have been queuing for the g to make sure they have a good vantage point. Laura is anyone concerned about mixing patriotism with politics on the fourth of july . Reporter there is no doubt some have been ncerned. There are some who feel this could be seen as being used foro tical purposes, particularly given that President Trump is going into a Campaign Year ahead 2020. Particularly since there are many events taking place in washegton, d. C. That celebrat Independence Day already and some of them are happening further down the mall speak. The other issue is using the Lincoln Memorial. There are some who remember oratory from t likes of martin ther king jr. Who gave the i have a dream speech standing here. They feel the psident should not be doing this given how divided america is at the moment. But he insists this will be a thanking to the troops and a display of patriotism, notg somethcessarily political. Laura chris butler outside the Lincoln Memorial, thank you. Now toem sudan, where theal of the former president has led to pow struggle which is increasingly being marked by violent. On the thirdf june, the heavy hand of the old regime resurfaced. Dozens died. Women were raped. Life has never been the same again here. It took protesters weekso reorganize.
