In fact, the yield on the tenyear treasury climbed to a threeyear high today and thats garnering a lot of attention from investors. Mike santelli explains. Could this be the unstoppable stock market rally . This is the big question after it rose 2. 6 this month and approaches a fouryear high. The bond yields will spell trouble for stocks and depends on several variables. How far will they rise if they rise at all . For years, wall street has predicted the treasury would hit 3 and that hasnt happened since early 2014. How fast is any further climb in yields . Implying more uncertainty about the Market Outlook and why yields are rising is a crucial factor. Strategists are taking comfort from the fact that bond yields are working higher from historically low levels on signs of corporate earnings climbing in support of stocks. Its worth noting that the last time the tenyear treasury shurgeed to 3 in 2013, stocks had one of the best years of this bull market. It fresh ree yields were to shoot well above 3 in a frenzy that upset the Corporate Bond market or on fears of accelerating inflation, then perhaps it would touch off the sharp setback thats been avoided since middleton 2016. Theres no doubt some level of bond yields and its impossible to know in advance and at least for the moment doesnt seem all that close. Here to discuss what it means for you is j. J. , chief Market Strategist at td ameritrade. Lets talk about why you decided to do this. Are there fundamental events that when they occur in the overnight trading hours perhaps put some investors at a disadvantage . Yes. You know, you look at what happened last year and we had brexit and the president ial election. These were opportunities for people which, if youre a futures trader, you can take advantage of but if youre not, you really couldnt. So we looked at it and said, you know, why wouldnt we give this opportunity to people who are qualified to do so so they could trade these events overnight . Or one of the big things we found, sue, is on our metrics measuring how our clients do the research and in conversations with our client, 70 of our Client Research is done while the market is closed. Why wouldnt we give people an opportunity to act on what theyre researching . So etfs feel to me like step one and step 2 is the ability eventually to trade individual stocks. Well, you know, a lot will the nice things about the etfs is that the Market Makers and you always need Market Makers in the market, they can hedge these pretty easily because they are related to futures products that are currently trading or, you know, markets that are open at that time in the emerging markets, et cetera. To your point, that may make sense that we do individual equities and certainly take a look at it but, again, you want to roll it out and be successful and we feel there will be great liquidity in the market and we saw really nice liquidity in every product that we have. How much of the trading action do you think is also going to stem from the asian markets. With the time change there, theyre at a disadvantage. They have to trade during our market hours, not their market hours. I think you hit on something incredibly important. One of the reasons we did it, you know, we have a singapore offering now. Were rolling out our hong kong offering and so clients there trading the u. S. Markets, they are sleeping when our markets are open. And the other thing i think that all of us have learned from bitcoin is the great influence of asian investors in that product. Well, why wouldnt we want to put them in products that are theoretically not as speculative as bitcoin and allow people to actually do some investing rather than speculating a Price Movement . Best of luck with the new program. Appreciate you coming on, j. J. Thanks for having me. Now, separately, t. D.
