And north Korean Leaders reach new levels, north korea says it may test a Hydrogen Bomb in the pacific. And mexico is still searching for anyone left alive after tuesdays powerful quake. A new exhibit explores the work of jasper johns and his impact on the art world. Jane welcome to our views on Public Television in america and around the globe. Pyongyang is now threatening to detonate a Hydrogen Bomb over the pacific. It comes after an exchange of insults between donald trump and kim jongun, who called the u. S. President a mentally deranged dotard. We have the latest from the south korean capital. Reporter for the First Time Ever today, kim jongun stared into a camera and addressed the u. S. President directly. He called donald trump mentally deranged, and said the president would pay dearly for his threats to destroy north korea. It did not take long for mr. Trump to tweets response. He said kim jongun of north korea, who is obviously a madman who does not mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before. York, northr in new koreas foreign minister mate another extraordinary threat, to drop a Hydrogen Bomb into the pacific. The decision to conduct the strongest ever Hydrogen Bomb test in the pacific ocean. , norter here in seoul signs anyone is particular worried by all of this. This city has lived under the threat from north korea for so long that even when there is terrifying rhetoric coming from over the mountains today, people here tend to shrug their shoulders and carry on. Today they are doing so again. If you talk to people whose job it is to worry about north korea, you hear a different story. Used to run the north korea desk at the state department. As far as i know, this is the First Time Ever an american president and a north Korean Leader have engaged in a namecalling match directly at one another. I dont think he has any sense of how damaging that kind of rhetoric coming from an american president is, how counterproductive it is youre talking about the korea problem. This retired general shows me the names of the 178,000 south korean u. N. Soldiers who died the last time they went to war here. I dont think america will attack now, what if all options to pressure north korea fail, if he refuses to give up his weapons, in the end, the u. S. Will consider military action. Reporter if that did happen, a second korean war be just as deadly as the first. Rupert wingfieldhayes, bbc news. Jane i spoke with jim walsh, a senior associate at m. I. T. Security studies program in boston. Thanks for joining me. How seriously should we take north koreas threat to detonate a Hydrogen Bomb over the pacific . I think it is worth taking seriously, that doesnt mean they will do it. Prudence would dictate you should think about it. During the obama administration, there were several in the white house who worried him kim would do precisely this. If theyre going to do it by missile, they are not quite there technically to be able to launch an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile into the middle of the ocean. But they have different options. Here, ing that is striking to my friends who are korea watchers, is that kim essentially owns this. It was not a message from the government or military, it was chairman kim reading a public speech saying what he was going to do. That caught the attention of my colleagues. Jane why has he decided to respond in personal terms now . We are used to Donald Trumps colorful rhetoric, but why have kim decided to respond . Im always terrible at explaining for people like donald trump does what he does, and i am no better at explaining the thoughts and desires of the head of north korea. There are clearly some theories. Some people look at it culturally and say he has to respond to a loss of face, part of it might be are getting tactics, continuing to call mr. Comes bluff, to call mr. Trumps bluff, if hes in fact nothing. Raising the crisis to make it a crisis on purpose to extract the most benefits in the resolution. There are various theories. Unfortunately, we have more theories in fact we just dont which makess this a dangerous situation, when you dont know why the other player is paving the way they do, that should give you some caution. Jane if its a war of words or is it really escalating to the point of military conflict . I think it is a war of words. The fundamentals have not changed, north korea does not want to start a war it knows will lose because the kim family does not want to lose power. You would think these sort of fundamentals would keep things in check. I hope so. But, there is a lot of bluffing. A lot of bluster. There are military exercises being carried out by all parties, including china and russia, a lot of moving parts. It takes one external shock, one mistake, one error, one miscalculation and suddenly you find yourself in a very different situation with very different incentives, some of which would be incentives for conflict. If the fundamentals hold, great. One of the things americans learned last year in 2016 is that evidence may be improbable, but improbable event happen. They are not impossible, they happen, just not as frequently. You are running risks here, even if the fundamentals point to stability, there is a risk of conflict. Jane thank you for joining me. It has been three days since mexico was rocked by powerful earthquakes and the death toll stands at more than 290. Nearly half were in the capital of mexico city, but near the epicenter to the south, and tragedy unfolded during a baptism. Reporter it is one of the most Shocking Stories of this national tragedy, a church less than four miles from the epicenter of the earthquake had been hosting a christening of a twomonthold baby girl. The ceremony was about to get underway, the family and ents assembled as the house of god was violently shaken. Hadassistant to the priest been beside the altar, paralyzed as the ground was rocked. Thenirst movement happened it stopped, he says, so we thought it was over. But then the rest came and i did not know what was falling from where. I was totally surrounded i dust, i did not know what was happening. It is simply impossible to imagine the horrors of what happened in this church the moment the earthquake struck and these massive chunks of the building came crashing to the ground. The family was congregated here and the town came out to try to dig them out of the rubble. All they recovered was bodies. Phone but each was taken minutes after the earthquake, the church hall completely carpeted with a deep layer of rubble. It was filmed by a man who would come to help, not realizing that six members of his own family were buried. When we were removing the global, you could see hands, and when you found a hand, you try to take everything off. If it was dead, you just try to move aside and get to people who were alive. Reporter you could still hear people. You could still hear people trying to move and speak. Reporter some of them were your cousins. My family died right away, it was a big impact, but for others there was hope. Reporter among the dead, the baby being christened and her mother. This Beautiful Church can be rebuilt, but across mexico or the struggles of those who have lost what is irreplaceable. A brief time ago i spoke to the bbc correspondent in mexico city. The death toll is rising, how much hope is there of finding more people alive . People are not giving up hope , the rescue efforts are ongoing. Todayxican president said that they are continuing with rescue efforts and still focused for a much on that. The fact of the matter is that we are coming close to the 72 hour mark since the earthquake struck on tuesday. That is the average time someone can survive in the rubble after an earthquake. Realistically, the odds of finding people alive in these buildings are slim. In the past, people have been rescued will blind that time period. People are not giving up hope, found themselves hampered last night. The bulk of the operation is able hand to hand, picking up the rubble. Hundreds of rescuers are getting tired after working aroundtheclock the past few days. Jane what about the relief efforts . Are people getting the help they need. What you can see behind me is a relief station. Underneath the 10th, people handing out food, water and close speared and clothes. This other tent has people have been out legal supplies. It is making sure the people dont just have basic supplies, but somewhere to go. Mexico city is a huge metropolis and thousands of people are homeless as result of the earthquake on tuesday. Many people are unclear whether their homes will be rendered safe or not. Many structures are at the risk of further collapse. It is a contentious issue for people. Also many people do not have insurance, and that is why people are being offered legal advice as well as the very basic supplies they need. Even though this is a major city, so much electricity was lost in the last few days, and infrastructure as well, it was difficult to get things here. I get a sense that things are starting to turn around. A few more businesses have opened since we got here a couple of days ago and people are starting to get back to normal life. Jane thank you. He made his name by painting the American Flag in his own style, and more than 60 years later, jasper johns is considered one of the greatest living artists. A major retrospective of his work is opening in london. We spoke with the shows curator, who explained why his work has had such an impact on the art world. Jasper johns is without doubt one of the most important contemporary artists. He early in his career, in the 1950s, did a series of works including the flag you see here, flags, target, numbers, maps, that really shook up the art world. And he found this image that perfectect for him, and to move art in a new direction. So once he showed these early works, he was instantly recognized as an artist who was doing something new. Jasper johns has always said that he did not choose the flag because it is a patriotic symbol, and it was not chosen for anything but the fact that it was a familiar object that he said was something that was so familiar that it was overlooked. He thought by resenting it is a painting, by presenting it as a painting, people would have to look at it in a new way. Now, johns is not that interested in pop art subject ,atter, in Popular Culture art commercial imagery. Although it appears in his work. But it is not the central element of it like it is for pop art. But he influenced a whole range of artists, and even into the present he remains a very vital influence on younger generations of artists.
