The entire region being affected as thousands flee the violence in myanmar. Look whos coming to dinner at the white house donald trump invites the top two democrats in hopes of cutting a deal. And strike up the orchestra. Last night a robot took over his conductor and apparently wowed the crowd. Welcome to our viewers on Public Television in america and around the globe. The humanitarian crisis affecting the Rohingya Muslims of myanmar has reached catastrophic levels according to the United Nations. Thethe secretarygeneral has cad on the authorities in myanmar, a mainly buddhist country, to suspend their military action against the rohingya people. He warns of the crisis is destabilizing the entire region. Rita chakravarty starts our coverage. Rita the end of a long journey. Rohingyay muslim people live in bangladesh arrive in bangladesh, fleeing persecution in buddhist dominated myanmar. Bbc filmed it in flames last week. The government said the fires were started by rohingya villagers. We found some of those villagers here in bangladesh. These two watched the bbcs pictures of their village. They say the governments version of events is false, and they blame the police and buddhists who they call rakhine. The rakhine set fire to our homes. They only kill muslims. They even tried to kill people as they tried to escape. A revenge is district, a border town in myanmar. Therend refugees from too. Officials told the bbc that rohingya had set fire to their own homes. Again we found people who said that is not true. In our area, all of the houses, including mine, were set on fire by the military and the rakhine. I saw the fires with my own eyes. Rita here at the hospital there are numerous rohingya patients and their families. The situation is catastrophic. Rita with the United Nations now openly saying myanmar is committing ethnic lensing, how do they react . I am happy that this man and the war are talking about us, the rohingya people. Them. Appy and praying for rita people continue to arrive by any means possible, making their way to safety. But the risks are great. Nine bodies were recovered from the waters today. Their final resting place here under this tree on foreign soil. Jane a brief time i spoke to city. N a bangladesh you have been covering the situation for a while now. How much is this crisis escalating . Rita i think it has escalated, in the words of the human secretarygeneral, catastrophic proportions. City. You have been covering the situation for a whilepeople arey degraded conditions. You have seen the pictures People Living in very basic mud, not beinge able to get enough food, no access to clean water, conditions are very unsanitary. People are living close proximity to each other. Aid agencies worry there might be an emergency within the emergency. By thatir main they mean there is a huge refugee crisis, but that in itself might trigger something else, like a cholera outbreak. People are taking this very seriously indeed. Jane the latest from Rita Chakravarty outside of a hospital. Thank you. Beenars leader who has criticized for failing to defend the rights of the Rohingya Muslims said she wont be attending the Human Assembly in new york last week. U. N. Assembly in new york next week. Our correspondent has been to myanmars secondbiggest city, mandalay, to assess the mood of the buddhist majority. Correspondent the sense of a buddhist country is powerfully felt in mandalay. [ringing] correspondent so too are the echoes of current events. This collection was ostensibly for all refugees in rohingy in Rakhine State. We heard the line all over myanmar muslims were being burned out by muslim terrorists. Destroying not only buddhist homes, but also muslim houses. I dont want all the terrorist groups. This is a war about the occupation of the territory. They are killing all the people they see and destroying all the houses they see. It was meant to be very different. [applause] a year ago the prodemocracy prohuman rights party of Aung San Suu Kyi became the government. But the countrys de facto leader has refused to condemn the security crackdown or call for military restraint. In mandalay her Party Spokesman sees rakhine buddhists as the victims. What do you believe is happening in Rakhine State . I want to say what my own view is. I only see that rakhine ethnic people have been attacked. There is little sympathy for the persecuted minority in Rakhine State. If Aung San Suu Kyi was to say or do anything that will be considered showing solidarity with them, she would be politically exposed. That is something the military understands well as it continues with its brutal crackdown. The perception here among many is that it is burmese buddhism that is under sees from death that is under siege from militant islam. These men belong to an organization that has done much to stoke fear. A hardline nationalist movement with much popular support. Jail forr went to inciting hatred against muslims, but was not keen to speak for us when he appeared for breakfast at his monitory. Can i ask you about the ethnic cleansing . But later i was granted an interview with eight of the movements senior monks. The organization was banned by Aung San Suu Kyis government. They refused to acknowledge the existence of the rohingya, calling them bengalis. I asked about the response to the rakhine crisis. Speaking foreign language] correspondent that is not an endorsement she will cherish. There are efforts being made by some moderate buddhist clergy to ease tensions after attacks on muslims three years ago. The memory of that violence and the Rohingya Crisis has created pervasive unease. Muslims working with buddhist peacemakers are worried. I trust the current government not to let the violence happen here. On the other hand, i do not trust the army. Correspondent there is an immediate crisis in rakhine, but wider questions too about the power of the military and the hardline clergy, about what kind of country this might become. Bbc news, mandalay. Jane a look at other news from around the world. And in the caribbean, the cleanup continues. The British Foreign secretary Boris Johnson has visited to see the full extent of the damage. Laura bigger filed this report. When you have devastation on this scale, where do you start to rebuild . Thousands of people are homeless. Businesses have been destroyed, and as the shock subsides, reality kicks in. The people on the island are willing to move but they know they need help. I live right around the corner. You dont want to see my house. Correspondent the foreign secretary is assessing the damage himself. Completely impassable with debris. Everyone takes the opportunity to eat when they can, even when Boris Johnson is in what remains of your front yard. You have really come together and got through this. That is what you have to do. I just talked to the premier orlando smith. He says they have food and water for two months supplies. Obviously what we are doing is intensifying our effort. Correspondent there are also still a number of security concerns on tortola. We have been told not to walk too far up this straight because a number of serious criminals are on the loose. Something else for the local and National Government to deal with. When you walk around this neighborhood you get a real sense it is not just about rebuilding lives and homes, it is about rebuilding trust. We are trying to make some phone calls. Correspondent some just want to leave, or at least get their family off the island. It is really difficult. There is no food, no water. We have heard there are some people bringing some help, but we have not seen anything. They are organizing the logistics. While that happens, people are suffering. You are alive, there is hope. Correspondent others like doris will stay. If we had a and animosity among us, this is the time to pull together and get stronger and move on. I think we have to keep hope alive. And when we do that, we are going to make it to where god happens to go. Correspondent there is a special spirit on these remote islands. So many are working hard to help themselves. They now have but one dream, to restore tortola to its former glory. Once again it will earn its nickname as natures little secret. Jane you are watching bbc world news america. Still to come on tonights program, why is the republican president inviting the democrats over for dinner . We will get more on the meal that has washington talking. Syrian president Bashar Alassad has met with russias defense minister to discuss the fight against terrorism. The russians claim 85 of syrian territory has been cleared of armed groups. Steve rosenberg has traveled with the russian army and sends this report. Steve this is the russian airbase, the heart of russias military operations in syria. An operation which has changed the course of the war here. It has been nearly two years since moscow launched an intervention in syria, and now the russian army invited a group of journalists to give its perspective on how the operation is going. Syrianuptodate, 85 of territory has been liberated from illegal armed groups. Steve we have taken off from the airbase on a Russian Military plane. We are headed somewhere, i dont know where. When youre on a tiny tour on syria with the russian army, they never tell you where they take you to. [whistling] steve we have been brought to a school in the city of aleppo to show that life is returning to normal here. Thankful. Really [clapping] steve it is quite clear that a large part of aleppo still lies in ruins. But what the russian army is trying to demonstrate by bringing us here, even though it does feel a little stagemanaged, is that life is returning to the city, and that russia is playing a part in that. Steve rosenberg, bbc news, aleppo. Jane the white house is used to hosting highprofile dinners. Washington is buzzing about two people joining President Trump tonight. The unlikely gusts are none other than unlikely Democratic LeadersChuck Schumer and nancy pelosi, suggesting trump might be willing to cut some deals to get what he wants. Mike colleagues katty kay and Christian Fraser spoke with trumps friend chris ruddy for their Program Beyond 100 days. Katty chris ruddy, thanks so much for coming back on the program. You know President Trump very well. You speak to him all the time. Which is the real President Trump . Is it the one reaching out to democrats making deals, or the more hardline conservative which seemed to dominate the first few months of office . Chris thanks for having me on. No surprise donald trump is a guy that said he would reach out to democrats. I think he used the term earlier, a dealmaker, or guy that wanted to make deals. Lets not forget 10 years ago donald trump was an active democrat. Money for people like Chuck Schumer and nancy pelosi in previous campaigns. Is reaching out and trying to bring in the democrats across the board. Katty Chuck Schumer is a new yorker, donald trump is a new yorker. They have known each other for donkeys years. Paul ryan and mitch mcconnell, the republicans, not so obvious stall mates with donald trump. Chris he may be sending a message to republicans with this meeting. People say it is so unusual he is bringing democrats over. George bush used to do it all the time. Eight years of gridlock under barack obama she did not even have democratic members to the white house. Donald trump says, bring everyone in. He has been doing that at the oval office and other meetings. He does bring it to a new level. Reagan did it with two colonial famously in the 1980s. With tip oneill famously in the 1980s. With donald trump i dont think it is surprising. He is saying to the republicans, if you dont work with me, i can work with democrats. I think the americans want that kind of president. Christian he is desperate for a legislative when. How consumed or how derailed has he been by these pressure investigations in congress and by obamacare . Russia investigations in congress and by obamacare . Chris i dont think he has been derailed by the pressure investigation. I think obamacare hurt. Paul ryan gave him a bill of goods. Trump correctly deferred to congresscongress onit. He didnt realize that they did not get the buyin of their own membership, of senate colleagues. The thing was a disaster. The thing was a disaster. Trump has learned you cannot take the lead from congress. Start the game and carry the football. He has to show leadership. You are seeing that on the tax reform stuff. He is not waiting for along. Cans to come along. He says he has a plan, he will reach out to democrats preemptively. I think it is marked. I think he will work hard with republicans. He wants to let them know he is an independent actor. He is an executive in the leading branch of our federal government. I think he will bring people together. Katty newsmax ceo chris ruddy. A brief time ago i spoke with for u. S. Litics writerka news and world report. Thank you very much. Chris ruddy says he is not surprised this is happening. Donald trump is better known as the divider in chief. Can he really be a Unifying Force now . Daivd he can if the pressure mounts for him to do so. For u. S. News and world report. Three months out, the end of the year he doesnt have a legislative a compliment. Withs not worked republicans, so now he has nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer. He has insulted them earlier. Now he needs them. There is a little trepidation over how long this will last. Jane a lot of them think he is toxic. Will they work with them . David if he does things like daca, extending that program that democrats want for children of illegal immigrants, if they can get concessions and go back to their base and get some wins, i think it is acceptable. He goes with republican orthodoxy, i think they cut him loose. I dont think he has given up, but he likes the plate jiujitsu. He likes to keep everyone offbalance, including his advisers and members of his own party. He is unhappy with the leadership of paul ryan and mitch mcconnell. It is a warning shot. If you guys cant get things done, i will work with democrats. Jane how worried should they be . David he is an unpredictable president. They should be a little on edge. They still hold the majority. If he wants to do anything big done, he will need them. Jane you will you are on the hill covering Bernie Sanders unveiling his universal health care plan. Neverw, not very popular, really went anywhere. Why does it seem to be gaining traction with democrats now . David if you look in polling there has been an uptick in support of government run health care. Bernie sanders bringing 16 democratics both sponsors on board. That is one third of the democratic caucus. That does not mean it is going to pass. It will be dead on arrival in a republican congress. It is a shot against the bow to say this is where the debate is moving. Sanders says he will take this debate across the country to try to build that support. 16 joiningof those forces with him are pretty big names. They could well be contenders for 2020. What does that say to you . David Kamala Harris of california, kirsten gillibrand, cory booker of new jersey. If you want to be the Democratic Party nominee, you have to be on board for singlepayer universal health care. Jane this will be a big issue again . David this is expanding the Affordable Care act. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders had this debate in 2016. Bernie saying go the whole way, hillary wanting to protect what we have. Bernie is trying to move the ball closer down the field to his goal line. Jane thanks so much. Much like politics, going to the orchestra can sometimes be a surprising experience. Last night people were treated to a real first. A robot took the baton, accompanied by none other leading tenor andrea pacelli. The bbcs James Reynolds has the story. James this conductor never drops its baton, never doesnt get angry with its orchestra. The robot has been preloaded with a series of moves made by this oldfashioned human conductor. Exhausting process. Longtime. James good learner . After a while. At the very beginning we stopped seven to eight times. Every time stopping this lovely thing here means stopping 20 and 30 minutes to reset it. By the eighth time, i was not pleased. James itself is built on a tradition of doing things a little differently. This city has an unofficial rule. If it works, even if it looks a little strange, then go with it. In this spirit piza hands over a concert to a robot. James without nerves, the robot conducts. A good audition, but the singer will stick with human beings. For now we will decide for a man. The robot has not the will and is not artistic of course. James the audience is intrigued by its guest conductor. I think it was missing a head. It was very funny to see the arms moving but no head. Even just a blank face i think would help. James if it gets any better, it may bring in a strange future. A robot conducting fellow robot musicians perhaps. What, if anything, would be left for the rest of us . Jane i wonder what he does for an encore. If you want to find out more about us, you can of course check out the website.
