The big concern has been the florida keys. Because of damage to roads in some of the more remote parts of the florida keys, they can still only be surveyed by air. This is where Hurricane Irma hit first in florida and it is where some of the worst damage could be. Though people in the keys have become used to hurricanes, when irma was recorded as the most powerful hurricane ever in the atlantic, most went to safer land. Many still unable to return to their damaged homes. For the places in the keys that there has been axis to, access to, it appears there is massive gamma. That goes for the rest of the city of naples. She feels let down. They need to step up to the. Late, come help us we dont want more speeches. We dont want more lip service. Or pack your bags and leave. If you are not helping, you are sure hurting. Reporter only in the last few hours has a contingent of Royal Marines arrived on the island, that until now local people have had to be selfsufficient. Of what is a grim place, trying to restore its beauty, trying to rebuild their lives. Anger there. Operation has begun in the British Virgin islands. The area has been devastated by Hurricane Irma. We have a reporter on the largest of the islands and she sent this report. Reporter there is now a sense of desperation and fear in the area. People are hungry, tired and in need of basic supplies. Traffic the line of trying to get into the main town. Most are heading to the supermarket for the first time. Have you got enough food and water . No. Everybody is fighting and is stealing. A lot is going on now. People are breaking into homes going away with what they have. It is a state of emergency. Outside the store, some have been waiting for the doors to open for eight hours. As only a few people are allowed in, chaos ensues. They are worried that supplies are limited. We need water, we need food. Have you had enough help . I dont think so. Rationed Water Supplies are being handed out with the help of more british troops. They have been a reassuring presence, a welcome sight. We have seen real spirit and strength in the last few days. Residents realize that it could take years to rebuild. And that they will have to summon a great deal of determination to help raise this island from the rubble. Laura lure reporting from one of the British Virgin islands. For more on the massive response already underway in florida, i was joined a short time ago from Oklahoma City by joe, the former director of the federal Emergency Management agency. I started by asking him to give us an idea of the scale of the task facing people in florida. Forget you had Hurricane Harvey last week. They will continue for several weeks and months. We are still in the response phase in florida. Most hurricanes hit the peninsula of florida and go from east to west. This went from north to south. The whole state has been ravaged. All 67 counties. The federal government has been working with local and State Government to preposition as many personnel, as many supplies that will be needed, in the weeks and months ahead. There are in excess of 30,000 federalized National Guard members ready to start going from house to house. Laura do you worry about fema being overstretched . You mentioned that, of course, irma is coming hard on the heels of Hurricane Harvey and texas is still reeling, let alone florida. I am not worried about fema being stretched. Part of the genius of the stafford act, is the elasticity of fema. It can grow or shrink based on need. Their will be two major operations, one just north of houston, and another one in the center part of the state, if not tallahassee, then orlando. That is not a problem. The thousands of volunteers who have showed up willing to help is incredible. There are almost 35,000 federal employees on the ground in florida alone. Laura that was joe speaking to me earlier. Still to come, steve bannon is out of the white house but he is not going quietly. He declares he is ready for war with republicans. About 70,000year, passengers are injured on car cyclists are injured on roads, and many of them involve car doors. We go to a solution for both of them. I was riding my bicycle here once him and he opened the door. I try to avoid it, but i just ran into it and fell on my head. When i woke up, there were a lot of people around me. I had a big bump on my head, and i was like, what happened . It turns out that this catchy the unitedcreated in states to describe something the dutch have been doing for decades. They dont call it the dutch reach. I never heard of it. You told me. Pupils . O you teach your we say to open the door, look what is happening around us. Inside, outside. Look over the shoulder to the blind spot. Reach like that. Hold your right hand on the door. Before we go, you look again, holding with the left hand right away, then we open. Common sense. Laura myanmars treatment of Rohingya Muslims is a textbook example of ethnic cleansing. The senior official has called for an end to what he calls a cruel militarization. Military governments response, more than 300,000 rohingya have fled to the neighboring bangladesh where many are desperate. We go to the port city bazaar, close to the border, for this report. Reporter what is happening in myanmar . Looking across from bangladesh, huge clouds of smoke filled the skies. Military boats patrolled the river border. The army is accused of setting fire to villages and planting landmines in the path of people. It denies it is targeting civilians, but we found evidence to suggest otherwise. This small hospital has been coping with large numbers of rohingya casualties. In the last week, they have had an influx of critically injured people blown up by landmines as they escape. [speaking foreign language] reporter this is one of them. He is 15 years old and unlikely to make it to 16. He arrived at the hospital a week ago with his leg destroyed. He suffered a terrible loss of blood but doctors have no more to give him. His brother, in another hospital, suffered the same. [speaking foreign language] [translator] i cant go back to myanmar. We are not safe. I will beg here in bangladesh and that will be better. I used to pray to allah to give me a son, but now they are gone. Their injuries are so bad, it is as if they are dead. It is better if allah takes them. They are suffering so much. Reporter this woman will pull through, even though she has lost both of her legs. She fled myanmar because she says the military is targeting her community. She was crossing the border with her three sons when she trod on a landmine. [speaking foreign language] [translator] they had already gone ahead and i was behind them. And that is when the explosion happened. We had been fired on, shot at, and they planted mines. We have escaped to bangladesh because we have nowhere else to go. This fiveyearold plays with her little brother. She was shot while being carried by her father while they escaped. The same bullet that hit her killed him. She still cries out for him. [speaking foreign language] reporter she has five other siblings, but in the confusion they were separated. Their desperate mother cannot find them. [speaking foreign language] [translator] i am in a terrible situation. I have not got all my Children Together and i have lost my husband, i have lost my house. Where do i go . There is only unhappiness for us. [crying] reporter down the road at the largest central hospital, there are more casualties crammed into a ward. People on the floor, people in the corridors, every space taken. Half of these patients are Rohingya Muslims. This hospital has been inundated since the crisis started two weeks ago and is struggling to cope. We need medicine, we need particular equipment, we need manpower, we need everything. Reporter do you not have these . No, our government supply is limited. Reporter the innocent cannot comprehend what is happening to them, but the rohingya people have been suffering miserably, regardless of what the government says. Almost one year since the election, Hillary Clinton is back in the spotlight. Her new book what happened is out tomorrow. In her first interview on the book with cbs, clinton reflected on her loss and what she may have missed. Hillary i understood that there were Many Americans who, because of the financial crash, there was anger and resentment. I knew that, but i believed that it was my responsibility to try to offer answers, not to fan it. I think that it was a mistake because a lot of people to not did not want to hear my plans. They wanted me to share their anger. I should have done a better job of demonstrating that i get it. Laura for more on on Hillary Clintons account i am joined by i spoke earlier to one of her top aides who said donald trump met peoples anger with anger. Is that the extent of the clinton campaigns explanation for her loss . Anthony i think that is one of the more self reflective moments of her analysis, that she could not match the national mood. I dont know if she could have, being the senior cabinet official in an administration that was in power for eight years and had been on the National Stage for so long, but she also talked about james comey and her evil server is a and her email server has a big factor, the russian meddling in the election, and even some discrimination, as factors in her loss. Laura how is this prolonged postmortem going down with them with democrats . Anthony i think that a lot of democrats would like to turn the page at this point. There is a lot of pain feeling the election was snatched from their hands. On the other hand, it is part of where the Democratic Party is going from here. They now have to analyze what they did wrong before they moved on. If you say it is outside errors and meddling, that allows Hillary Clintons politics to purveyed. A lot of progressives want something more robust, free education, and free health care. That would be a different goal than what Hillary Clinton had it during the campaign. Laura there is one person that we know Hillary Clinton holds partially responsible for her loss, which is steve bannon. That was Donald Trumps chief strategist. He is out of the white house, but is still flamethrowing. In a television interview, he was clear that he is going after the Republican Leadership on capitol hill. Take a listen. Mr. Bannon they do not support the president s program. It is an open secret. Everybody knows it. Charlie now that you are out of the white house, youre going to war with them . Mr. Bannon absolutely. Laura steve bannon there. How much consternation is that declaration of war causing among the Republican Leadership . I think it is deja vu all over again for the republicans. They hearken back to the Tea Party Movement that sprouted under president obama. The movement that claimed as Many Republican establishment heads as democrats. Now they see someone like steve bannon tapping into that mood and targeting republicans in primaries. We have a big test coming up with luther strange, the incumbent alabama senator. If they knock him off, there are a lot of republicans who will be worried about this event again. This movement once again. Laura that will be a test of how powerful steve bannon is. Anthony it will be a big test. He is the longer in the white house, but he is still the head of breitbart news. It was a leading voice of the hard right conservative movement that brought trump to power. Laura absolutely fascinating analysis of these turbulent political times. Thank you for joining us.
