Success takes partnership, and only through discipline and trust can we create something greater than ourselves. Mufg, we build relationships that build the world. And now, bbc world news america. This is bbc world news america. Reporting from washington, i am laura trevelyan. The greek Prime Minister tries to sell the reform plan, but is anyone buying . It might be too hard to stomach. The battle flag of the confederacy comes down from the South Carolina statehouse. Why the removal of this simple means so much for so many. A little summer in the city like you have never seen before. A new take on a day at the beach. It might look harmless, but in the deep end, it is difficult to navigate, just like the real ocean. Laura welcome to our viewers on Public Television in america and also around the globe. The greek Prime Minister and nation at large have a crucial 48 hours. Alexis tsipras is seeking 48 alien euros in return for a commitment to raise taxes and reform pension. 48 billion euros in return for a commitment to raise taxes and reform pension. It is a tough sell, as gavin hewitt reports. Gavin in athens, the chance of protesters to feel betrayed. They believed that the government of Alexis Tsipras has made too many concessions to the creditors and european leaders in hopes of winning a third bailout. The greek Prime Minister swept into parliament having sent the plan to brussels, which offers more cuts and tax increases. He managed to smile, but he is struggling to convince his own party that he has not sold out. The measures are not pleasant, but necessary said one of the indies. We are talking about greek debt, which is not sustainable. There is bewilderment of people questioning how the government can propose tougher measures days after they voted no to austerity. Pension reform is the first proposal phasing out early retirement and increasing vat rates on catering and restaurants, and taxes on ports and airports. This is a private hotel. They will now have to shoulder steep vat increases. I do not know if we will be here next year. This is how bad it is. At the moment, we just survive. Gavin the proposals might be unpopular, but they are meant to persuade european leaders that the country is serious about reform. They hope that the proposals will be received positively. The french were the first to support it. The greeks have just shown the determination to want to stay in the eurozone. The proposal is serious and credible. Gavin meanwhile, there are increasing signs of a country facing economic collapse. 500 containers at the port can not be unloaded. Note can pay the tax to release them, because the tanks are closed. There is strong resistance from the left of his own party hours before the weekend that will determine the future of greece. Laura gavin hewitt reporting. I spoke to megan green about the situation in greece. She is a chief economist and an expert on the eurozone economy. Is this deal any better for the greeks than the one that they projected in the referendum . Megan it is a worse deal. There is no question that Alexis Tsipras rejected a deal a week and a half ago, only to completely cave to all of the red lines. The Greek Economy will be worse off. Alexis tsipras is able to sell this as a victory because he managed to win some debt relief. If the proposal passes as it stands, the creditors will talk about debt relief by 2022. Laura is there any talk of financial stimulus in this deal for greece who has been through years of austerity . Megan unfortunately, the focus on the deal is more austerity measures rather than structural reform. Greece needs to liberalize its product and labor markets, and that is absent on the deal because greece has found itself with such a huge fiscal gap that needs to be quickly closed. Laura the germans have said very little. What do you read into that . Are they supportive . Megan because the greek government used the deal that was on the table a week and a half ago as the basis for this one, and has added measures, i think the germans will be broadly supportive. There will be more backandforth over the weekend but i am optimistic for a deal being signed. Laura even if the deal is approved, what are the risks for the Greek Economy . We saw on the report that one business woman does not think she will be able to pay added taxes. Megan parliamentarians in greece are debating the bill. The majority could get smaller. The majority already does not have much credibility in implementing the deal. We saw people vote against it in the referendum. If the majority is even smaller, the credibility will window. Laura greece i was more money on july 22 the European Central bank. What happens there . Megan that is the real deadline for the deal. They oh 3. 5 billion euros on july 20. If they cannot make that, they will torpedo the greek banking and push them out of the eurozone. If the ecb demands that greece return their emergency liquidity assistance the greek government will have to print their own currency to resolve and recapitalize the banks. That is why a deal is necessary so they can pass it through various parliaments in time to make the payment to the ecb. Laura the greek Prime Minister has just said that his country will repay the European Central bank their money this month. In the United States the fbi says the alleged shooter and the charleston attack should not have been about to buy a gun. Incomplete paperwork let dylann roof slip through the background check system to buy the weapon. His actions helped lead to the removal of the confederate battle flag from the state grounds in South Carolina. That is where we are reporting. A festival interrupted on the streets of columbia as a multiracial crowd gathered to celebrate the lowering of the flag. Years of oppression are over with. Everyone is out here. It is a great day. It is a great today in South Carolina. There were dissenting voices who regard these colors as an emblem of Southern Heritage rather than a fabric of hate, but they were outnumbered by people who waited all of their lives for this day. In the midst of the carnival, a short and dignified ceremony. An honor guard at the state Highway Patrol brought down the colors that had flown at the state capital for more than 50 years. [cheering] for many this represented a break from the unhappy past. For them the flag meant slavery, segregation, and subordination. They will not have to look at it in this public place again. [singing] you can sense the catharsis when they moved on. The flag is down. It is a great day. It is historic. Their lives are not lost in vain. A national celebration. The bringing down of a flag will not solve americas racial problems, but it is an important step in bringing people together. Bbc news, columbia. Laura seven fifa executives did not resist extradition to the United States. They are accused of bribing for marketing rights. The office of Personnel Management suffered a huge breach of its computer system. The leader has resigned. She had been under pressure after it was shown that Sensitive Information of 20 Million People was stolen. Two new cases have been reported in liberia since the resurgence of the disease two weeks ago. The United Nation secretary is hosting an ebola recovery conference in new york. 700 million are needed to rebuild Health Services in liberia, giuinea, and sierra leone. The liberian situation is that the fight is a very tall fight. It is not only for us to get to zero and a stay at zero, but for us to succeed in the fight we have to ensure that we build resilient resistance. I must say that we have none of our medical people were exposed to knowledge on how to combat ebola, but we have built up a lot of capacity. It is not only a question of human capacity, we have to have Additional Resources and facilities to strengthen our resilience. Laura the president of syria the president of sierra leone. There has been a third extension in two weeks between the talks of iran and world powers about the nuclear deal. There are outstanding issues that remain unresolved. The british Prime Minister has called progress on the talks painfully slow. We were joined by president obamas coordinator for arms control, who is now a veteran of these negotiations. What do you read into the fact that they have extended the deadline for the third time . I think it is good. It indicates that the two sides are highly motivated to reach an agreement. Apparently, they have made progress in closing gaps. At the same time, it is clear that they have a significant disagreement over the most important remaining issue, whether or not to lift the embargo on weapons sales to iran. I cannot read whether or not they will be able to resolve that issue over the weekend, in which case i think it is possible there will be a break in talks were both sides will have an interest in keeping the process going, but it could lead to an agreement delay. Laura the question of lifting the ban on weapons sales to iran, do you see a compromise their . I think a number of different compromises have then floated including one that would phase out the van over phase out the ban over time. It is possible they will keep the ban in place for years, then have a sunset provision, just as other elements of the agreement have sunset provisions for restrictions on the Nuclear Program in iran. It is hard to say what the iranians are asking or, as i understand it, is an immediate lifting of the weapons embargo. That is clearly not politically sustainable in washington. Laura you are a former official that warned that the iran deal could fall short of a good agreement. That had to do with inspections on the nuclear sites. Have changes been made . I think it is hard to tell until we see the fine print. We know that there will be very detailed technical annexes, five annexes totally 80 pages, and that is where the key details will be totaling 80 pages and that is where the key details will be on research and development, the timing and sequence of sanctions relief we will have to wait until that is public to judge. Laura do you worry the u. S. Has invested too much to walk away even if it is a bad deal ultimately . I do not think the u. S. Should walk away. I think the status quo is serving our interests. Iran has rose and most of their Nuclear Activities and sanctions are in place. I think it would be a mistake to walk away. We should be comfortable extending the negotiations for weeks and months. The pressure is on iran, not the United States. Laura thank you for joining us. Still to come on tonights program, fans rejoice as the first chapter of harper lees classic is made public. A court in thailand has been told that vital dna cannot be retested in the trial of 2 burmese men accused of murdering two british back packers. Jenna fischer has the report. Were no closer to finding out what happened to hannah and david. The prosecution began its case with witnesses explaining how they found the backpackers dead on a beach last september. Graphic pictures of hannahs battered body was shown in court. Her father was seated a few seats away, and left the court after an hour of testimony. This is a difficult trial for the relatives who came to thailand. I spoke to the family of david miller earlier, and they said they were finding this very hard, andriy keeping an open mind as to how the case was progressing. And they were keeping an open mind as to how the case was progressing. The case rests on dna evidence gathered and tested by the police. They want that to be reexamined, but the police are not helpful. Some of the samples were finished during the testing process, meaning they no longer exist. We will send the remaining items to the court. That means a boat, a shoe, and a plastic bag. But none of the potty on but none of the dna found on hannahs body that matches the suspects. Jonah fisher, thailand. Laura waiting for the much anticipated novel by harper lee. We got a preview of her forthcoming book. The opening chapter of go set a watchman was made public. The sequel will be only her second published novel. The writer had plans to be more prolific. This is an extract from harper lees go set a watchman. The racial tensions in the American South were written in the 1950s. They were discarded by the author after the success of to kill a mockingbird, her first novel. You never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. Atticus and his daughter scout were featured in both books. I talked to harper lees friend and benefactor who showed me a letter that she received from the author in 1958 outlining her career plan. I have my work cut out for me in 1958. A race novel, a victorian novel and entertainment, i will tear monroeville to pieces. She did not stop thinking about it, until all of a sudden, no more. Why didnt she follow it up . She tried, but i think that when it began to snowball, and it snowball to the top of the mountain, i wonder if it snuck up on her after a while whether or whether it overwhelmed her. And you tell her to get the typewriter out . No. You have seen her recently . Last week. How did you find her . What i did was to write out. She can speak, and she thinks about what you have written so that when she answers she is very specifically answering what you have written. Issue happy about watchmen, or she not completely aware . She is very much aware. The fact she cannot hear or see well has nothing to do with the fact that her brain isnt running on full tilt. Has she read watchmen . She said she didnt need to, she remembers it. It is unlikely to deter those who waited for decades to get an update from the finch family. Laura now that it is finally summer temperatures are rising, and many of us are finding time for sand and sun. There is a popular beach in d. C. That has none of those things. It is miles away from the shoreline. Thousands have already been to see the new attraction. I have found by found my chair. There is one thing missing. Where is the beach . This one is miles away from the coast in the center of washington, d. C. At the National Building museum. It has been transformed into a summer spot with millions of plastic balls making up the sea in this interactive art exhibit. It is kind of like the ocean isnt it . It is only been open for a week, but 10,000 people have already visited the synthetic shoreline. The bigger you are the harder it is to maneuver. I am a big sea monster that is trying to get her. The gigantic ball pit is the brainchild of the architecture firm. When they said if they wanted to put a beach in our great hall, my heart stopped. When they explained how they wanted to approach the concept it made sense. It goes with what we do as a museum. We talk about design, space materials. This installation reflects our mission as a museum in a beautiful way. It might not look it might look like harmless plastic water, but it behaves like the real ocean. Bbc news, washington.
