Tonight the middle east is facing a rapid intensification of tensions following israel's assassination of the longtime leader of hezbollah. More in a moment. First, what's being described as biblical devastation caused by hurricane helene. It is a disaster across the southeast for tens of millions. Tonight this dam straining under flood waters in north carolina. The monster storm is being blamed for at least 57 deaths across five states. We have two reports tonight beginning with jason allen in florida. Jason, good evening. Reporter: good evening, nancy. You know, these pilings back here, these held up a single story house here more than 70 years. When you have damage this catastrophic, search crews have been combing this area throughout the day. But the governor said today there have been no deaths here. Hurricane helene delivering the knockout punch to keyton beach. What do we do now? do we keep do we continue to do this. Reporter: he returned to find the lower level of his home ripped away by wind and water. Taylor county officials estimate 90% of homes in keaton beach are gone. This is where our home was. Reporter: helene broke storm surge records when it made landfall thursday night. Statewide, crews conducted thousands of rescue missions. Access to the barrier islands west of tampa just opened to residents late today. Officials say communities there have no power, no water and catastrophic flood damage. The remnants of the storm are now spinning north. Reporter: again in atlanta where you can see water logged trees from crushed homes here. The entire region is covered in damage like this, and it's been a very deadly storm. In tennessee, the flooding was so bad that two dams were at risk of failing. The city of newport was ev evacuated, but both dams ultimately held. Rescues have been made. Attempts have been made in places like that. Reporter: yesterday, this hospital needed the help of the state police and national guard to lift more than 50 people off of the roof. In north carolina, the intense flooding caused by helene was strong enough to wash away cars. First responders helping rescue more than 100 people. Today georgia's governor toured the hardhit city. What it looks like from the air, it looks like a tornado went off. It looks like a bomb went off. It was all around the water. It was like an island. Reporter: selena was asleep in this bed when she started floating. It was not a dream. Oh, yeah. A nightmare mostly. Yeah, it was insane. Like i couldn't believe it. I was in shock all the time. I never experienced anything like it. Reporter: wow. And the water isn't just going over beds and over roadways, but underneath them, eating away at the soil and opening up sink holes like this one here in atlanta. The storm moving from kentucky to northern areas of tennessee. A big cluster of heavy rain. More heavy flooding rain for areas like the appalachians, west virginia, virginia and north carolina. An additional 2 to 4 inches on top of already 6 to 25 some of these areas have seen. A flash flood warning continues sunday afternoon. Mean meantime, more excessive heat for the southwest valley. To the middle east and a stunning revelation against hezbollah. Tonight israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said his country had, quote, settled the score with the killing of the group's longtime leader. Netanyahu called it a historic turning point. But iran's supreme leader vowed the death will not go unavenged. In beirut with the latest. Reporter: good evening. Well, israeli air strikes continue to devastate neighborhoods across beirut tonight, just hours after hezbollah confirmed its longtime leader had been killed in friday's massive israeli strike. A stunning escalation now fuelling fears of an allout regional war. Amid the staggering wreckage of the air strikes, an outpouring of brief. As a small group of hezbollah supportered gathered into the jagged concrete and twist ed metal to mourn a towering figure that was ultimately no match for israel's military might or its breath taking intelligence capabilities as israel found and assassinated him at a time of sky high tensions. The lebanon based hezbollah, designated as a terrorist organization by the u. S. , is backed by iran. He has been its leader for 32 years. Undeniably charismatic. Some say messiah like. His fiery speeches like this one we attended in august. As supporters of hezbollah. Reporter: the most closely followed of any arab leader. To his enemies, he was a fierce foe of israel, one who challenged interests across the region for decades. With him dead, the future of the group now hangs in the balance. This is not a oneman show. He is an inspiring figure that he's their public face. He's the one that speaks on tv to the lebanese and the people all over the arab world. But he's not the soul autocratic decision maker. Reporter: while hezbollah's leadership may be in question, what's not is his transformation of the group from the resistance militia of small cells to some of the most sophisticated and well armed fighting forces. For israel, his killing and the assassination several of hezbollah's top commanders is aimed at bringing an end to the near daily cross border fire, which began the day after hamas' october 7th attacks that saw 63,000 israelis displaced from their homes returned as israelis carry out deadly strikes in lebanon south and in the capitol. The supporters struggle to come to terms with his killing. Now, it isn't immediately clear who will succeed him. President biden has said his killing was a, quote, measure of justice and that he wants to see ceasefires in gaza and lebanon for the middle east to, in his words, gain greater stability. Today. The president spoke to supporters after attending church near his delaware home. He called for a ceasefire but warned u. S. Warships and forces in the region would respond to any attack. Forces are already in place for whatever retaliation may come for now, but that, of course, is subject to change. Now ever since israel turned its guns towards hezbollah, we have been asking officials here what if? the u. S. State department has blamed his hezbollah organization for the killing of more than 300 americans in beirut in 1983, including the bombing that killed 241 military personnel, mostly marines. Here, of course, there is a sense of justice. But now what? we were told u. S. Defense secretary lloyd austin was only informed about the operation to kill him as it was already underway. No advanced notice. And i can tell you it came as a surprise here. Given that, what is the u. S. Preparing for now. Reporter: yeah. First of all, there are 40,000 u. S. Troops across the region. They have been repeatedly targeted by iranian backed militias before. They are squarely in the cross hairs. Just this week they stepped up attacks with the barrage of missiles and drones. Expect those attacks to pick up even more. Lastly, most importantly maybe, the question of iran itself. Most officials here are expecting the u. S. May need to step in once again and intercepting missiles as it did back in april. The israelis are moving troops to be in position for a possible preparation of a ground offensive but no telling when or if that's going to happen. Nancy? thank you. Tonight at least one person is dead and 17 others injured after a bus crash in phoenix. It happened on interstate ten near the city's downtown. There were 23 people onboard the bus. Reporter: they were part of the first test flight of boipg's star liner capsule. Problems with its propulsion system prompted nasa to look for another ride. This was not the very first option. We wanted to take starline tore the completion and land it back on land at home. But, you know, we have to turn the page and look at the next opportunity. Reporter: but it meant bumping two astronauts off this mission. I would be happy to give up a seat for them. If that is the safest thing, that is what's most important, we need to return them safely. Reporter: even if all goes as planned, williams and willmor will have to spend another five months in space because this latest mission is not set to return to earth until next february.
