We begin tonight with the danger from helene, now over the midsouth after roaring onto land over the big Bend Portion of florida as a major category 4 hurricane, with winds up to 140 miles per hour. Tonight, flooding is the main concern across north carolina, georgia, and tennessee, where we just learned dozens of people had to be rescued after being stranded on the roof of a hospital. They are among the hundreds who had to be saved from rising waters. The devastation stretches for hundreds of miles across the storm zone, homes destroyed, trees splintered, lives upended. At least 43 people have died. Power knocked out to more than 4. 5 million homes and businesses, from florida to ohio. And in north carolina, they have seen nearly 30 inches of rain, and it is still falling. We have a team of correspondents across the disaster zone, beginning with Dave Malkoff in a swamped atlanta. Reporter a desperate scene in erwin, tennessee, as floodwaters surrounded this hospital, trapping more than 50 people on the roof. Early this morning, helene slammed into georgia as a category 2 hurricane. With sustained winds topping 110 miles per hour, the deadly storm dumped heavy rains and caused catastrophic flooding. In valdosta, entire neighborhoods were underwater and more than 115 structures were severely damaged. We are also trying to get to multiple structures right now that we know have individuals inside. We will have to literally cut our way into situations like this. Reporter In Atlanta, this family of three and their two dogs were rescued from the roof of their vehicle. Nearby, this Apartment Complex flooded. Neighbors had to rescue each other. 83yearold Sam Oni was one of them. But i thought that i would somehow escape it. But i did not. And i owe a lot to them. Reporter in asheville, north carolina, officials are telling residents to shelter in place as lifethreatening floods damaged homes, toppled trees, and knocked out power to more than 800,000 people. This is one of the worst storms in modern history for parts of western north carolina. Reporter there have been more than 100 swiftwater rescues across the state. The intense flooding has swept away cars and huge dumpsters, even Propane Tanks were seen floating in the water. Business owner Tony Coggiola says his building was underwater. What you have is raging water. It came that fast. Thats with really scary, when youve got, when you try to be open and you have to move people out. Reporter and speaking of water, this swollen creek back here and the firehose of rain that we got here In Atlanta turned parts of the Parking Lot in this Apartment Complex into x this level right here. And maurice, that shows how powerful the storm is because where i am standing here is 274 miles from where the storm came on shore. Maurice it is hard to get your head around it all. Dave malkoff In Atlanta, thank you. And now to florida, where helene roared ashore in the big Bend Region overnight as the most powerful storm to ever hit that part of the state. Cbss Jason Allen is on the ground. And jason, what are you seeing tonight . Reporter good evening, maurice. This community has been hit by three hurricanes now, three hurricanes in 13 months, and this one clearly hit the hardest. It destroyed some buildings that had survived those other storms. Florida was rocked by helenes first punch, Making Landfall Late thursday as a dangerous category 4 hurricane, with 140 mileperhour winds and up to 14 inches of rain. In the midst of the storm off sanibel island, this Coast Guard Crew made a daring rescue, saving a man and his dog who were stranded on his 36foot sailboat, taking on water. We have a lot of damage throughout the state. Water mostly on the West Coast and the peninsula. Reporter in steinhatchee, 48 hours earlier, stormweary residents had prayed helene would miss them, but Waterside Docks and restaurants that once stood here, though, are now gone. The Storm Surge shoved buildings off their foundations. If you let it play with your mind, you just cant go there. You cant. Its horrible. Reporter Linda Wicker lost the restaurant she has owned for 20 years. She seemed more shaken by what she saw all around the small fishing village. This is the Water Line from the Storm Surge, all the way up here at the top of this shed. So im reaching probably about 7 feet. The line is another foot and a half, 2 feet above that. Wicker and her family are already thinking about how to restore what helene washed away. Thers a lot of folks that you knoow, dont have a place to go, no money, no nothing, now no home, no nothing. So weve got to work to help them, too. Reporter im Nicole Valdes in tampa bay. In order to see some of tampas hardesthit areas, we had to charter a boat to take us there. Milliondollar boats like this one now teetering on the edge of that seawall, and just beyond it, the charred shell of what was once one couples home. They still arent sure what started the fire, but this a painful reminder of the wrath of hurricane helene. Maurice . Maurice painful is right.
