Hurricane francine just coming ashore, making landfall in louisiana, with wind gusts over 100 miles per hour. Relentless Storm Surge of 510 feet is inundating the coastline and beyond, into mississippi and alabama. And the worst is still to come in the hours ahead, as the powerful storm lashes New Orleans. As much as a foot of rain may fall over the next 12 hours as the Storm Moves inland. Evacuation orders and curfews are in effect. Cbss Dave Malkoff reports from the Impact Zone in southern louisiana. We have about an hour before that pushes past us right here in houma, louisiana. Most violent part of this storm is just minutes away. There it is in Terrebonne Parish. This morning at rouses supermarket in houma, carts were loaded and registers were ringing. This was their last chance to get supplies. Shequita streams wants to keep her kids distracted and busy. I got toys and like little train things for the kids, i even bought some schoolbooks peered im just hoping every thing just goes smooth and everybody can be safe. Reporter right now the levees are holding but the water is rising. Are there still people beyond the Levee System who are staying behind . I would not doubt there are the ground is saturated water and as the Levee System is closed, that water has a harder time getting out except to some areas that has some pumps. Reporter New Orleans could get as much is 10 inches of rain, putting the Citys Water pumps and Drainage System to the test. Even vintage streetcars were taken out of service and moved to protected areas. Stay inside. Hunker down. How is the time. Between now as well as moving into midnight. I think we are talking with Storm Surge and freshwater flooding. It is going to be the signature of the storm. You saw the winds out there where dave is, and there could very well be some 90100 mileperhour gusts where he is around houma, also some really decent winds around New Orleans, as well. But we are going to test those levees. All right . They survived fine during ida four years ago. That was their first test. This will be the second test. As that storm pushes onshore. Currently the northern portion of the Eye Wall is inland, but the southern portion is not as strong but as yet to make its way through. Places in the eye, about 20 minutes or so. As it moves in land it is going to quickly weaken. By the time it gets to tomorrow, it is in the process of weakening. As it pushes towards haitis bird, it becomes a tropical storm, and then by probably tomorrow night, you are looking at a tropical Depression Tat would still bring down a lot of rain. Places like memphis, to the north of landfall, memphis, florida, 6 inches of rain but around New Orleans and the coastal areas. I think 510 is going to be a pretty decent number that is going to be widespread throughout that area. That is the very latest. It is all yours, margaret. Police arrested an Arson Suspect that they believe sparked 1 of 3 large blazes in the state, two which have exploded in size over the last 24 hours. As Cbss Ben Tracy shows us, dozens of homes have been destroyed. Reporter the socalled Airport Fire took a dramatic turn overnight, Torching Homes and vehicles as it barreled its way along the border of orange county. Residents managed to escape the inferno, which has now burned more than 23,000 acres. The thought about being burned alive is nuts. Reporter Federico Salinas returned to find his home and animals were spared but not much else. This whole neighborhood is gone. What do you make of this . Its scary. It really is. Reporter in the mountains above los angeles, the Bridge Fire rapidly grew 12 times in its size in less than a day. It took aim at the committee of wrightwood. To see a fire that is burning 40,000 acres in 24 hours, its not an understatement when we say this fire exploded into town. Reporter the Wind Driven Flames destroyed at least 39 homes and cabins. This woman was among those rescued. A popular Ski Resort was also threatened. We hve active fire on both sides of the skiing. The heat and the field still out there presents a very real risk to all of these communities. Reporter meantime, authorities have arrested and charged 34yearold Justin Halstenberg for allegedly starting the Line Fire that has ravaged close to 35,000 acres. Officials say the investigation is not over. Its my belief that we will actually find out the suspect may have been responsible for other fires.
