Sacrifices and my familys sacrifices combined in one day. The big milestone theyre celebrating early. And a Nobel Peace Prize winning civil rights leaderrer comes to the bay. We introduce you to the grand marshal of the carnaval parade. From kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. Hi, im sara donchey. Day one of the memorial day weekend travel rush is in the books, and things did not go entirely smoothly. Like, this accident and massive back up on the bay bridge. It started with this truck on fire on the bridge this morning. It caught fire heading west just before the Treasure Island tunnel, and it took hours to clear and get traffic moving again. The scope of the back up in the east bay was obvious. Our helicopter flew over 80 cars stretching back for miles before all lanes were finally back open around 5 30 this evening. That caused a lot of days. And with today being the busiest travel day of the weekend, there were long lines at at least one bay area airport. This is what passengers were greeted with today at oakland. That line stretched all the way out to baggage claim. If youve flown out of oakland, you know thats not a good sign. But it was better with sfo. They were dealing with an estimated 600,000 travelers passing through between today and monday. Thats up 8 from last year, but things were moving fairly well. Whether youre heading out of town or staying in the bay for the Holiday Weekend, the weather could impact your plans. We expect a cool down again tomorrow. Darren peck is here with the details on the Holiday Weekend forecast. In a lot of ways todays change was the most impactful of the weekend. To understand whats coming for saturday and the lingering effects of todays change, we have to look at how today played out. Well start by watching the winds that started to pick up along the coast today, and you can see the streamlines showing you that the winds were really starting to rush down from the north and then into the bay. This was different. See what happened today. See the bands here, we had 30 Miles Per Hour gusts through the golden gate today. It was driving in a very impressive marine layer over the east bay hills. And we did something pretty interesting. If you look at the daytime highs for today, we came very close to breaking a record. We were two degrees what the record is for the coolest daytime high for todays date. So if it felt dramatically cooler in the city, you were right, it was. But look north. North bay still in the 70s today, plenty of sunshine. And if you look at everybody else, we all felt the cool down a lot more dramatically than the north bay did. Ill give you a quick review on the numbers out there for today because theyre similar to where youll be tomorrow. But theres a lot more to the weekend. Cause after tomorrow well start turning a corner, and ill show you what it looks like for sunday and monday coming up. For now, back to you. About 40,000 people went to the first day of the bottle rock Music Festival tonight. A very popular event. Seemed like they were all trying to get there at the exact same time. Its hard to afford a festival ticket on my payroll. Reporter the Music Festival has a lot to offer, even if you only have general admission tickets. The spa had an iv lounge, and kids and adults blinged out at the sustainable sparkle bar. I have gemstone eye liner. We have all different gemstones, colors, sizes. Reporter bottle rock brings in roughly 40,000 people a day and is a boost to local businesses. Many say this is uniquely napa and enjoy the event year after year. Com, or the cbs news app. That was some video from the shooting at Oaklands Skyline High School that we brought you as breaking news last night, and now we know three people were hurt. Theyre all expected to survive. Witnesses say they heard gunshots after a fight on campus during a Graduation Ceremony and started running for cover. That turned what was supposed to be a happy milestone for seniors into something very scary as they got their diplomas. I was on the verge of crying. People were crying for me. They were so excited for me. It went from crying happy tears to crying scared and afraid tears. So far police say theyve arrested one adult, but they havent said how that person is connected to the school. Investigators say theyre looking for other possible shooters, and they are asking witnesses to turn over any camera footage they may have. All right, take a look at this. A mangled suv after a driver lit his cigarette too close to some gas canisters while he was in his car. This happened last night in los angeles. You can see shards of the car, glass, plastic, metal in every direction. The the vehicle was in pieces. Thankfully, and miraculously, the driver suffered only minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Back here in San Francisco, police are looking into a crash in the tenderloin that sent a silver vw beetle into the side of a building at the corner of turk and larkin earlier today. Paramedics took two people to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. Just down the road, Video Game Company nintendo is planning to open a store in union square. It will be only their second location for nintendo in the united states. And after years of hearing about Stores Leaving union square, this announcement has tourists and locals excited about the prospect. Theyre a very well known. For example, i think about the Pokemon Centers and things like that. They have a big fan base, and nintendo has a big fan base, so i think it will draw people out to visit. We still dont know exactly where the store will be opened in union square, but its scheduled to open in 2025. An exciting day for students at an oakland high school. They were celebrating big achievements ahead of the Graduation Ceremony planned two weeks from now. Heres a look at this the special ceremony. Reporter few things can match the anticipation of a commencement ceremony, but here in oakland, graduation might actually be the second most exciting day of the year. For a first generation student, this means a lot to me. Its basically all of my sacrifices and my familys sacrifices kind of combined in one day. Reporter ever since she was a little girl, marisol dreamed of going to college. Today shell get to announce where shell be headed during her schools socalled College Reveal day. Reporter but what makes this one different from any other is the fact that for the third year in a row, every single senior here has been accepted to a fouryear university. And if thats not impressive enough, all of them come from low income families where few of their parents had any opportunity for higher education. The tradition that theyve done for the past three years. Reporter paola is the guidance counselor. She says the reason is school is so successful is because every student has a team of academic advisors that work with them one of one and are available to them six years after graduation. Every student deserves an opportunity and theyre all college bound. Reporter the school has a unique approach that gives students both classroom and real world experience through a work program that also offsets tuition. We have wonderful Corporate Partners that mentor them in a job location doing work over the course of four years. Reporter as for marisol, shes not just going to any college, shes headed to. Hi everyone, ill be majoring in english and ive committed to uc berkeley. Reporter being accepted to a top tier university. Clearly a class act with a high degree of difficulty. A voice for change leading this years carnaval San Francisco. Coming up after the break, we introduce you to the Nobel Peace Prize winner serving as the parades grand marshal. How she risked he ever life her life to speak up for indigenous rights. Its a dangerous thing. The fact she still kept going despite all the tragedy i think is a really important piece as a woman to be able to speak up. And lake tahoe is full for the first time in five years. Why that could actually be bad news for people hoping to hit the beaches there any time soon. All right, weve been talking a lot tonight about all the events happening this weekend, and San Franciscos carnaval kicks off tomorrow. As we get ready to celebrate, we want to highlight some of the amazing people involved like this years parade grand marshal, a Nobel Peace Prize winning activist for indigenous rights in guatemala. As len ramirez shows us, her trip to the bay for carnaval is sparking a surge of pride among the local Indigenous Community. Reporter ancient dance traditions passed down from the maya and aztec are kept alive by people like the bay areas lilia. Shes a guatemalaameri can whose family was forced to flee genocide in 1975. And today she credits the face of guatemalas Human Rights Movement and who will be honored as this years carnaval grand marshal for saving ancient traditions and restoring pride in indigenous cultures. She has allowed her people to acknowledge the importance of our rituals, our culture, our ceremonies that have been passed down for thousands and thousands of years and had the potential to be lost during the war. Reporter she won the nobel prize in 1992 after dedicating and risking her life to publicize the plight of Indigenous People in the guatemala civil war are thousands were killed or vanished. She lost her own father, mother, and brothers to the violence. I think she said the quiet things out loud. She spoke up about the violence against Indigenous People, the violence against Indigenous Women in a country with political unrest. Thats a very dangerous thing. The fact she still kept going despite the tragedy i think was really an important piece as a woman to be able to speak up. We lived in the . An era of genocide, the tortures. Reporter shes still speaking up, although she was forced to leave her home country and come to the u. S. For a time. She was able to return to guatemala and use as her platform to continue to fight for the rights of her people. Lilia says its resulted in good in the bay area. There are now places like the Indigenous Healing Center in marin dedicated to the needs of indigenous families. Everybody matters and everybody deserves to be safe. I think her work is a testament of, um, how someone can speak out loud and really make movement and change. Reporter a person to be celebrated at carnaval, a triumph for the Indigenous Community of the bay area. Heres what the parade route will look like if youre curious. It starts at bryant and 24th street, then heads to Mission Street and move to 15th street and ultimately end on harrison. Meanwhile, harrison street from 16th to 24th will be closed until monday morning as well as treat from 16th to 22nd. Our special coverage of carnaval starts sunday at 10 00 a. M. Memorial day weekend will also be the last chance to hit the slopes at tahoe before resorts pack it up for the season. Palisades tahoe is the last ski resort still operating. Theyre offering a last chance weekend before shutting down until next winter. And when hotels reopen for the summer, lake tahoe is expected to be at full capacity for the First Time Since 2019 thanks to the built up snow pack from the past two winter storms. But more water might bring some challenges. Right now the water is about half a foot below full, but it could be full within the month. A full lake would mean a healthy environment, less fire danger, and better boating for the area, but it also means less beach. It definitely compresses everybody and leads to challenges, but the trade off is the great water. Officials say theres still plenty of beach access all the way around the lake. And obviously tahoe a popular test nation on a Holiday Weekend, but a lot of people are sticking around too, and its been kind of not quite hissable outside, but sort of wet, unpleasant, cold, windy earlier. Kind of not nice. Oh, you just described may gray, actually. The marine layer really did come back in today with a vengeance, but today was interesting the way it did it because it was not equal for everybody. Going to bring the clouds down because when we look at it on the ground youll actually see an important pattern. The marine layer hung out in one spot all day today and never let up. You were gray from the city to the peninsula, and interestingly enough, the east bay shore. Look at the daytime highs. Fremont didnt get out of the 50s. Thats as warm as you got today thanks to persistent cloud cover and the on shore breeze returned. It was cool today thanks to the winds. San francisco, we mentioned this a minute ago, but it was two degrees high of breaking a record in the city. If you were two degrees cooler for the daytime high, you would have tied the record for the coolest daytime high for todays date thanks to the winds coming through and the cloud. Meantime look at santa rosa. You were in the 70s. You had a nice day. Not much in the way of the marine layer. This is how it will go tomorrow. No significant changes in tomorrows forecast. The temperatures pretty much the same for just about everybody, including the north bay. I think youll have an okay day temperaturewise. And if youre in the immediate bay, youll feel the same on shore breeze, and its going to be just as cool tomorrow as today. But its going to be cloudier. Look at where we start tomorrow. The marine layer will be a lot more widespread. So instead of just picking on that one location right through the middle of the bay, we wake up tomorrow, and its a lot more widespread. Everybodys got it. I think the north bay gets a little break. Theres santa rosa in the clear for the most part. But theres so much to the marine layer its actually going to mist out a little bit, and youll get light rain out of this along the coast. Nice break and clearing and then back to the daytime highs. Pretty much identical to today. Theres a little bit of measurable rain along the coast tomorrow morning. But remember thats morning. By the afternoon youll have plenty of sunshine. Interesting pattern, by the way, thats responsible for this. How did we go back into may gray overdrive so quickly . That. Look at this trough driving down out of the gulf of alaska and coming right overhead. You can see it in the clouds. Theres the leading edge. As that passes, it clears and then allows the marine layer to pull in behind it. Almost like a vacuum, like its filling in the gap. Thats why the marine layer is on overdrive tomorrow. But its really just tomorrow well do that. If thats saturday morning, let me show you the rest of the Holiday Weekend. Sunday morning comes around, and theres a little marine layer in the morning, but not nearly as overwhelming as saturday. And by sunday afternoon its gone. More sunshine than anything else sunday afternoon. Same story monday. Monday morning we start out with classic marine layer gray in the morning. Then it melts back and plenty of sunshine for the afternoon. So when you look at the forecast for the Holiday Weekend, there are some big differences, especially if youre inland. Saturday is fairly gray and cool in the morning anyway, but sunday and monday are noticeable warmer. Once we get through with the twoday period where were under the influence of this resurgence in terms of may gray coming back with a vengeance for two days. But you look at the rest of the sevenday. Look at next week. Inland going right back into the low and mid80s for daytime highs. And when we look at the forecast for the bay, its the same story, warming into the 70s. No more of this 57degree daytime high for fremont like we had today. Back to you. Up next, theres something new in golden gate park. Where you can pick up an adult beverage on your next walk, which is something matt might want to try. How dare you. Ahead in sports, the giants are starting to hit their stride and provided another thriller friday night. Plus a dagger in the nba with the western conference on the line. One team stole another dub. All right, i dont always catch the giants games, but thats what we have you for. And its kind of been a roller coaster of a ride when asking you if they win or lose. Certainly a roller coaster, and right now im calling them the cardiac kids because the giants have had a flare for the dramatics in recent days. Theyve been mounting major comebacks, and the bats have been the biggest part of that. Theyve scored at least six runs in six of the last seven games. Harrison had a rough fiveth inning. The solo shot given up here to martinez, and then a homer to vietos and new york had a 52 lead. Now its 63 in the eighth, but Patrick Bailey gives San Francisco the lead with one swing of the bat. Grand slam. Third straight game the giants have rallied from down four runs or more. But could they hang on . Bottom nine, the mets have the bases loaded against doval. The unbelievable play, and the giants win 87 becoming the first team since 1999 to come back from down 4 or more in three consecutive games. Great stuff. We have some youngsters checking out the as and astros. Jake myers down the line, the astros scored six runs in the fourth, all of them, they win 63. In the nba, mavericks, luka playing through the pain. Here it comes. Playing through the pain here as you can see. We pick it up with six minutes left. Dallas and minnesota tied at 94. Doncic makes the shot while falling down to give the mavericks the lead. He drills the step back three putting gobert on skates. Last chance here for reed. He made seven threes, needed eight, shot at the buzzer no good. Mavericks steal another on the road 109108 and theyre up two in the series. Stanford ace in the circle against lsu. Game one of the super regionals. Tigers leading 31 in the fifth. Newland goes deep for the a threerun homer that chases kennedy. The cardinal lead the best of three series 10. Tigers now one win away from the Womens College world series. Stanford baseball hoping to continue their unlikely run in the pac12 tournament. Scoreless against arizona. Bottom third. Wild cats off the right field pole. Arizona eliminates the cardinal 63. Wild cats play usc. They beat cal in the other semi. Back to the giants for a moment. The incredible play from matt chapman. After the game bob melvin said hes seen ever play chapman has ever played, and that was the top. And lamont wade jr. Also what a scoop, he deserves credit too. Theyre six and a half games back of the dodgers. Its early in the season, its still may, but at least theres some life from the giants. Yeah, thats nice. All right, lets hope it continues. Matt, thank you. You dont have to carry your beer in from outside if you want to drink in golden gate park. A beer and wine garden is starting in may from noon to 6 00. The whales tale is open every weekend for the summer at the 14th avenue east meadow. Its been a thing of summers past as well, but with a new name this year, its got a bigger menu with cocktails. Theyll also have food trucks, live music, street art, and games. Up next, well explain why how do you know the summer beach season has officially arrived aside from matt out there with no sunscreen totally red as a tomato . I just want to see, i want to push the boundaries of when a dermatologist will make me stay inside. That was actually opening day at oracle park. Someone will call in and say its time. My skin is none of your business. Carry on. Youre right. In new jersey, though, they have a specific way of marking the summer occasion. Hundreds of people dressed in suits and other business attire marched straight into the atlantic ocean. The business persons plunge is a way to signal its time for people to ditch the Stuffy Office attire and have fun. All im thinking about is the dry cleaner down the street thats racking up sales. Your portfolio is intact. Yeah, i dont know. Maybe. But maybe not. You wont see me doing that. Not in these suits. No, i mean. I kind of like the creativity of this. I do too, but ill go to
