Everything all my memories from as a little kid from playing up and down in the house, you know, jumping off the walls and doing stuff. Its gone like it was burnt away. A San Francisco dog walker says he lost everything while also dealing with racist threats. The investigation into a fire and the burning questions about allegations of hate. I want to preserve, you know, the culture and everything related to our community. Countdown to carnaval. San francisco and the work to honor indigenous roots. Your community station is there. Are you yeah, yeah, your masters and higher education. It gives us an example of you can do it. You can do it. A couples commencement brings a diploma duo in the south bay. Midweek motivation to help you master the day ahead. And dogs that fly . A new airline giving dogs a seat takes off. But the price per pooch might feel like a paw to the jaw. And of course they have the queens dog, the corgi rolling that out. Good morning, everybody. We hope you feel like a king or a queen in the bay area. Regardless of whether you fly with your pooch or not. Im reed cowan. Im gianna franco. Lets just say the price tag for that is a little bit ruff. I see what you did there. I try. All right. Lets get a ding, ding. So proud of myself with that moment. Live look outside on this wednesday morning. Oh, just take a minute and look towards the television to enjoy this gorgeous view right now. Of the sun just coming up. Santa beautiful . Jessica, what a gorgeous way to start the day. And i know its going to be a little cooler today. But its capable of nice and you get a little bit of a variety in. Too hat you will pant. [ laughter ] i love you guys so much. All right, lets take a quick look at whats going on outside right now. For all those dog lovers out there, who still need to take the dog on a walk before theyhead to work or school today another cool morning for us and were waking up to 50s and 40s throughout the bay area. As we take a look at the daytime highs today were warming up close to yesterday but not nearly aswarm. Daytime highs today are still hitting the 80s all throughout the bay in the east and were expecting 60s today closer to San Francisco and yesterday was kind of a treat anomaly in a way. We hit 70s in San Francisco. Cloudier skies are going to start filling the bay too. Just in time for memorial day and like i said were in the 50s and 40s throughout the bay area currently. What we can expect heading into this afternoon . At the Virtual Reality map and now its going to be blue skies above us once again heading into this afternoon. But a little bit cooler especially along the peninsula. And gusty too. Goodness gracious we have wind speeds anywhere up to around 40 Miles Per Hour today close to the bay. A lot lighter wind off in the east bay. And just more inland that you go. Were expecting 70s this afternoon anywhere from redwood city all the way over into fremont and livermore. With similar trend down near san jose. Now as we get closer to memorial day weekend, theres plenty of events happening for us here in the bay and im going to break those down for you in the forecast too but for now over to you, g. Thank you, jess. All right, lets talk about the freeways right now. A live look at some the routes heading into San Francisco right now. Golden gate bridge, one of them. Not a bad commute at all and in fact nice ride as you head out of marin county so far. Little change there typically later on as more folks get on that ride on 101 out of petaluma into novato. If you are taking that ride towards the bay bridge, well, thats busy. Metering lights are officially on and theyve been on for about 30 minutes now. So were seeing that backing up heading into the city. And other than that, it looks pretty decent and no delays right now on 101, 280 along the peninsula and 880 getting a little built slow and talk more about that in the next report. Well, we have news just in. Former Oakland Police chief Leronne Armstrong is running for a seat on the city council. That means he would sit at meetings with the mayor who fired him. A spokesperson for armstrong confirmed he will file the paperwork today. Mayor sheng thao fired armstrong last february after an investigation found he allegedly mishandled two Police Misconduct cases armstrong then filed a lawsuit with the city after an arbitrator cleared him of any wrongdoing. The state trial for the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi begins jury selection today and were talking about david depape. Already been convicted in his federal case but now faces state charges including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Federal judge convicted and sentenced depape to 30 years behind bars last week. But that sentencing hit a snag. The judge at the time didnt give depape a chance to speak at the sentencing. Thats law. So now there will be a new federal sentencing hearing and well be there. The owners of two halfmoon bay Mushroom Farms a center of the mass shooting case ordered to pay nearly a half Million Dollars to the workers. Back in january of 2023 police say a disgruntled coworker shot and killed seven of his coworkers. Police on the rush there in this video. In the days that followed governor gavin newsom amplified poor living and working conditions for farm workers. And then there was an investigation by the u. S. Department of labor. That revealed the farms underpaid workers and didnt provide safe living conditions. San francisco supervisor matt dorsey is pushing for a policy change to speed the process of getting more bootsen the ground in San Franciscos police force. Dorseys Charter Amendment would create a new minimum staffing level and it would also give incentives for officers to delay retirement to stay on the force. By way this is his second attempt to create policy to fill hundreds of officer vacancies. You might remember back in march, voters widely rejected prop b which would have provided 30 million from taxes to recruit new officers. Looking live at city hall this morning. As the stun comes up where later today mayor london breed and the mayor of shanghai, china will sign a memorandum. Last month, mayor breed visited china to secure a shipment of pandas for the San Francisco zoo. And shore up relationships with businesses and airline carriers. By the way the pandas could be here as soon as the beginning of next year. G i say we get a bus and take the kids. Yes. Most definitely. Well, an Investigation Continues this morning into a mysterious fire that gutted the home of a San Francisco dog walker. Terry williams is wellknown by the community in alamo square, he says he had been targeting by raidest threats but as williams was sharing his story with city leaders yesterday morning, a fire broke out at his home on grove street while his parents were home. Firefighters had to rush in and rescue them and his mo was seriously hurt in the hospital this morning and his dad was treated and is expected to be okay. As lauren toms reports, williams and his neighbors have a lot of questions they want answered. I really thought i lost my mom and my dad. My dogs i thought i lost everything i cared ability. That is all that mattered. Reporter Terry Williams worst fears became a reality tuesday. When a fire ripped through his familys home on grove street where theyve lived for over 50 years. Like everything i just lost everything like, you know, all my memories and like as a little kid from playing up and down the house and jumping off the wall and doing stuff and its going it was burnt away. Reporter all made it out alive. A miracle he says, including his three dogs. But mystery surrounds the cause of the fire after a string of racist threats targeting terry remain unsolved. Our goal is to go to city hall to try to take care of something this this happens. Every time i leave, something is going on. I have to stay here and protect my house 24 hours now. Reporter even so, he wont speculate as to how the fire could have started. Earlier this month, Community Members rallied together and launched a go fund me for terry to install cameras in his home after a noose and a black doll were left in front of his door. The cameras were installed, but the batteries were charging while the fire erupted. During that time, terry was at city hall meeting with city officials about the prior hate crimes. Authorities have not yet identified a suspect. You can tell i dont feel no security now. Like i feel like they in a way, feel like they won the round right now. We still in the fight and they won like four rounds right now. Really five rounds down. And i mean, you know, this far down, im going to fight back. So this is rough and im not quitting. Only thing makes me want to fight harder and im going up against the gun. Reporter most days terry can be seen walking, his dogs and his clients dogs through alamo square park, chatting with people along the way. Members of this community including lori sartore are devastated alongside terry. She says the attacks are growing more personal. Because they dont deserve any of this. Theyre really, really kind people. And i dont think anybody deserves it, but especially not this family. Reporter displaced and on high alert, terry says he doesnt know where he can sleep, torn between keeping his family and his home safe. My dogs keep me warm. Like this is my house, what am i going to do . I have to protect my stuff. I cant take no more of this stuff no more. This is to the point where its just too much now. It was like my family like come on. Reporter left with more questions than answers as he picks up the ashes of the life hes lived. The board of supervisors adopted a resolution condemning racist threats and intimidation of the williams family. That was already on the agenda before yesterdays fire broke out. 6 09. We are all feeling the pain t the pump but will the president s new plan actually lower gas prices . Plus we told ourselves that no matter what we were going to finish. And thats what we did. And wishing hearty congratulations to 8,000 San Jose State University students graduating as the class of 2024. Great accomplishment. Shawn chitnis live on campus this morning with a look at two graduates making commencement couples experience. Good morning, shawn. Reporter hey reed, good morning. Yeah were going to have several ceremonies over the next three days and exciting to see this campus get ready for that. The decorations already around as were hours away from that first ceremony. And yeah, what an impressive store we have here. Getting a graduate degree already quite the feat. But then you add the fact that you have a job and you need to be a supportive spouse and now wait, both husband and wife are getting the degree together and theyre having a kid at the same time. Well, thats the story of one couple that is celebrating today. Fernanda renteriagonzalez and David Salinas walked down the aisle together and on wednesday, theyll take some more special steps together on stage as graduates of the class of 2024. We told ourselves that no matter what, we were going to finish. And thats what we did. Reporter both will receive their masters in counselor education from San Jose State University. The first in their families to get a graduate degree. It was incredible to have a partner that can relate to the same topics we were talking about and the same classes and having the same classmates and similar projects. Reporter david plans to focus on atrisk youth who may be around gangs growing up. While fernanda wants to advise low income first generation students. But well before they can put the new degrees to work, theyve already changed plenty of diapers for their daughter. It does take a village and thats something i dont know, you know, until you actually have a baby and you are like wait. It does take a village. Reporter violeta was born in their final semester of the program and is just ten weeks old. She showed up on a saturday, but the two made sure to attend class on zoom by the following tuesday. There were many advantages to having a partner who was also your classmate. But some days, it did add just a little too much stress to being a student. Oh my gosh, like am i going too slow and am i going to meet the deadline . You already started that assignment. Oh man, im way behind and i havent looked at the prompt yet. Reporter support from their peers and family made the last stretch of this journey possible so they could get to graduation day. You too can pursue your masters in your higher education. Take us as an example. If we can do it. You can do it. Reporter united in a common goal and now bonded by a shared University Education to do the important work of helping others achieve the same dream in the future. And so they are already thinking ahead about the student that they will get to help as counselors. They say now that they are better prepared to help those that are already married and have kids. Get this by the way. Even after having that young baby, they say that they only missed one class thats because they were taking the same classes so between the two of them, they made sure to get through all of those classes together. Reed, back to you. Excellence is a family affair. Shawn chitnis, thank you so much. And say hi to all the students you meet for us today. Thanks. Yeah, congrats to all the grads. City parks help us connect with nature and the community and the bay area is no exception. How well do some of the local park systems stack up . According to the trust for public lands annual rankings, San Francisco earned september place this year driven by 100 score on park access. Nationwide fremont came in at 29th and san jose at 32nd and oakland at 52nd. San francisco also ranks second in the nation for Park Investment spending a whopping 546 per resident on parks. That is way above the National Average reed, which is only 124. Wow. Well, taking a live look outside on this wednesday morning. 6 17 and jess, really beautiful weather for us here in the bay. But not that not that case in the midwest. You are watching story of tornadoes . Yeah, over in the midwest, check out this video just from iowa. Deadly tornadoes actually swept through the state just yesterday. And in greenfield, just southwest of des moines, Police Confirmed several people were killed in that tornados path of destruction. Now Officials Say they cannot provide a death toll right now since search and rescue operations are still ongoing but early yesterday morning in nebraska, the National Weather service said about 7 inches of rain fell in many flood prone areas. This just in the one western county they saw as much as 10 inches. This is the flooding of the town of fremont northwest of omaha. Where theres still a Flood Warning thats in effect this morning. And were keeping a close eye on that for a couple of reasons. Theres been active storms all throughout the states and back here in the bay we have been dealing with some pleasant weather. The storm tracks are well north of us right now. And theres a reason why for that and ill show you in just a second. Lets start off though with the daytime highs later into this afternoon. Just like yesterday, were still warming up well above average off in the east bay but its starting to become a little bit more average along the peninsula and the coast. 60s are in the forecast for us today near San Francisco. Were warming up into the 70s near livermore. Fremont and down into the Santa Clara Valley. Where were waking up right now with just a little bit of the haze Still Holding only tight to us in san jose and los gatos. The more north we go, areas like napa and petaluma and sonoma all in the 70s for us this afternoon and interestingly enough were going to continue to cool down as we head into the next couple of days until we hit memorial day weekend. With partly cloudy skies sticking around and 60s felt widespread throughout the bay area. Lets change gears real fast though and talk about the winds because its a gusty morning for many of us just along the coastline. Continue to watch the winds actually strengthen as we head into the next couple of hours especially close to the dinner time hours tonight. 3 00 to 5 00 wind speeds anywhere up to around 40 Miles Per Hour are expected up in the north bay coastline. About 30mileperhour winds closer to areas like San Francisco at times. Now other than that, as we head on to the next seven days, on top of the fact that were dealing with a gusty setup today, continue to see that in the thursday and friday forecast. Daytime highs still slowly starting to cool down in the 60s as we head into the saturday forecast. Partly cloudy skies at that point going to hold on tight to us early next week and then luckily we warm back up after we hit the 60s into the 70s as soon as monday and tuesday throughout the inland areas. G . Jessica, thank you. Lets head on over and get a live look at traffic conditions this morning. The sun is up and you are cruising right along on the san mateo bridge. Not too bad. So far weve seen some pretty good commutes for the morning drive on this wednesday. As you head over towards 101. Same goes for the Golden Gate Bridge. Not anything to slow you down here and everything is pretty quiet heading into the city. Heres the hotspot the bay bridge, but no surprise here. If you are headed into San Francisco if this is the daily commute out of the east bay it does slow down. The metering lights get turned on most mornings and 6 19. Backed up to the foot of the maze at this point with that eastshore freeway approach. The slowest. For now. That will change later on as 880 gets little bit busier. And it is starting to slow dun just a little bit but on the flip side on the southbound come coming away from the bridge really starting in hayward into union city not quite to fremont just yet. San jose commuters, you are in good situation. Not seeing any brake lights or delays at all this morning. I dont think hes somebody thats going to change even when he gets paid next year. That includes housing, restaurants, and a Convention Center with plans to attract new sports teams and revitalize east oakland. This comes as the future of oakland baseball is finally here. The ballers are on the board after their very first game ever. So take a look. The ballers in montana to play the glacier range riders and it was tied at 4 in the 6th inning but oaklands davis gets it done with a double into right field. Miles jefferson, just beats the throw home to give the ballers the lead. And in the next inning, donrde hubbard making things happen hitting a shot to make it a two run lead for the ballers. We have to wait a little longer for the niners to be back at home. They start the regular season on monday night football against the jets. Thats on september 9th. But the team is already back on the field this week. And matt lively has more from santa clara. Reporter its time to put the super bowl in the rearview mirror. The San Francisco 49ers hit the practice fields in santa clara on tuesday for otas. There were a couple of new faces in red and gold but also some absences that raised eyebrows like brandon eye. You try to respect itment and stay out of it as much as possible and look forward to the days when we think we can just focus on football. Whether you like it hot or maybe a little bit of a cooldown its going to be a great day. Good morning, jess. Yeah, we kind of have everything on tap for us this week at least its still dry out there though. No rain in sight anytime soon. As we take a look at Golden Gate Bridge, we see blue skies above us. Off to a great start when i itcomes to visibility at the surface level. Look at the American Flag waving in the wind. A lot gustier this afternoon but lets dive somewhat the weather headlines. Memorial day is right around the corner and its getting cooler and cloudier in the weekend forecast. Still dry though and thats the great news. But a look at temperatures are going to be significantly cooler than what we just had yesterday. Now take a look at wind gusts. Right now 15 to 30mileperhou r winds along the coast. Lighter winds in our inland areas near fairfield and napa. But watch what happens a we advance the clock all the way to around 3 30. Bodega bay getting close to around 40mileperhour wind gusts moving in from the north. That is a lot more significant compared to some of the inland areas like concord so just keep in mind all the microclimates are doing Something Different but even in the 6 00 hour still remains pretty breezy. The Alameda County da accusing of Insurance Companies ofundervaluing homes. Heres the back story. Da pamela price accuses the states second largest Homeowner Insurance carrier of providing low cost estimates that could leave customers in inadequate coverage in case of a disaster. The lawsuit claims Farmers Insurance based estimates on zip codes instead of the features of a home. Price asserts that farmers violated multiple California HomeownerProtection Laws and will seek damages and an injunction. The Insurance Company has a duty to make sure that a homeowner gets the benefit of the bargain. That the homeowner gets everything that they paid for. And that means when you suffer a loss of your home, that the Insurance Company has to make sure that you are able to replace that home. Other defendants named in the suit include farmers underwriters insurance and mid century which is a subsidiary of farmers. So cbs reached out to farmers for a response and they told us the allegations are incorrect and that the company doesnt seek to provide low cost estimates and farmers plans to speak to the da to address the concerns and defend their position. Probably not a bad idea to wear one but right now the hazethroughout the Santa Clara Valley and you can see behind me from the Black Mountain cam. The haze is going to dissipate and sunnier skies this afternoon and 70s in the forecast for us today. Anywhere from san jose all the way off in the east bay. 80s returning into the forecast this afternoon. Anywhere from concord over into antioch. And if you live near San Francisco, were right back to the 60s. Yesterday was kind of a tease we hit the 70s. But then reality hits and low pressure moves in. And suddenly thats going to cool us off a lot actually this weekend. So right around the corner we have a lot cooler weather in the forecast for us. Today were in the 70s all the way up in the north bay and see 60s as we head into the weekend. The reason why is because low pressure moving in from the north. For now were still left with blue skies all above the Golden Gate Bridge right now. And notice that flag just off into the distance. Its a little bit breezy along the score lionel right now. Actually to the point where we can see around 40mileperhour wind gusts this afternoon. Close to areas like bodega bay and stretching all the way close to the Marin Headlands too. Breezy afternoon for us along the coastline. Light every wind in the inland areas and get a bit gustier in the afternoon close to around 3 00 but look at the bay just highlighted in a 40mileperhour wind gust setup. It going to be gusty along the shoreline and along the highway that drives close to stinson beachment just keep that in mind if you are thinking of heading out there. Now for the rest of us here in the bay area, yes, a little braze this afternoon. And tomorrow but we still have the sunny skies in the afternoon hours. Its not until friday and saturday where we start to sea a really big shift in the forecast. 80s turn into 60s and then we average out into early next week with 70s returning all throughout the inland areas. If you live along the bay a little bit different though. San francisco, oakland, were sitting in the 70s and 60s today. Well sit in the low 60s heading into saturday and averaging out into the 70s into early next week. Gianna . All right, jess, thank you. Lets talk about the roadways right now. If youre getting ready to head out the door and hop on the san mateo bridge its getting a little more crowded and were sort of tracking this ride along the bay. And as the sun is up you can see a little bit better and some brake lights there heading over towards 101. Keeping that westbound commute a little bit busier than the eastbound side. Golden gate bridge, ing though still looking pretty good. However, north of here, things are starting to slow down a little bit. Southbound 101 out of petaluma. You are going to see some brake lights. Novato into san rafael getting crowded as well. This is a bit slow at the bay bridge toll plaza and of course were seeing the slowest approach towards the bay bridge that westbound 80 commute heading from berkeley into emeryville. Other than that as you look at the maps actually not so bad on 880 southbound. Hayward working your way into fremont and even south of there if you are making that ride north 101 out of san jose, pockets of slowing but 280 looks good and 87 slowing down just a little bit. Well, speed cameras are on the we to San Jose City streets and city officials announcing the cameras will go into place late next year. The 33 cameras will be placed in the high collision areas and its part of the state bill authorizing six cities in california to Law Enforcement a five Year Pilot Program involving the cameras. San francisco is also one of the six cities participating in the program. They will go up by late this year. Well, if you have been around long enough, you may remember taking wood shop in school. Its an elective that little by little has been disappearing from california schools over the last few decades but len ramirez shows you how its now making a comeback on one Pleasant Hill campus thanks to one very dedicated teacher. Watch. Reporter when these seventh graders file into nicole manasewitschs wood shop class, they are working with their minds and their hands. This is the edge router. So its its very easy. We just use two hands on it and you just go across the edge of your piece. Reporter kyle muller is making drink coasters and autumn kelly is polishing off a new chess board. I love wood working. Its really great being able to put all these big pieces together to make something really pretty like this. Reporter it was not long ago that this wood shop at Valley View Middle School in Pleasant Hill was in moth balls. It was closed for eight years after the previous shop teacher retired. It was part of a larger trend to move away from industrial tech classes in california schools amid budget cuts, teacher shortages and shifting priorities. Just last summer, this whole spot here was just completely filled with desks and chairs and any kind of leftover stuff. It was just a big storage facility. It was not workable. We had no tools and everything was poached except for maybe the big machines that were too heavy to move. Reporter nicole took on the challenge of restarting the program to give kids more options. Feel like now is the time for these kind of programs. There seems to be more backing and more interest and not only districtwide. But i think beyond. How far from the fence was it . Reporter but it wasnt easy. The biggest problem was finding a shop teacher and nicole taught english but took wood working classes at night so she could teach shop herself. She found skilled mentors in the community to help students with the finer points and reached out to retailers and rotary clubs to help equip the shop with the latest tools and safety gear. Handson learning where the kids get to physically move around is a style learning and aesthetic learning. But really these are applicable skills and you can transfer these skills on to anything whether its not just job related, but also just around your home and fixing things for yourself and knowing how machines work and knowing how to be safe around machines. Theres math skills and theres science skills and i mean, this is s. T. E. M. Were talking about wanting to do s. T. E. M. This is exactly it. This is s. T. E. M. These kinds of programs. Reporter of course, safety lessons get pounded into each student before theyre allowed to work the power tools. Power sand first and then switch to hand sanding. Reporter kyle says the skills hes learning here will help him in the future. Since i have learned this, i know like different trades and i know how to do like metal working and like wood shop and im going to like keep learning this stuff. Reporter and autumn says its a great way to get the mind refreshed during the school day. Its a lot different than any other class in the school. It brings a lot of kids a lot of enjoyment. Reporter wood shop, the type of class that used to be in almost every school but got swept away, now making a comeback.
