Among other things, lee agreed to a boycott of academic and Research Institutions with ties to israel. The csu chancellor said lee made the announcement in a campuswide email without approval. The move is under review wildly remains on leave. In another email, lee issued an apology and wrote, my attempt to find agreement with one group of students, i marginalized other groups of the student population and community. I realize the harm that this is caused and i take full ownership of it. I deeply regret the unintended consequences of my actions. In the meantime, the california legislative jewish caucus said they support the suspension saying, in a statement that his endorsement of an academic boycott was unacceptable and is evidence that he is unfit to lead the university. The school is saying that they would look into its investments to see if they align with the universitys values. The chancellor is also saying that she would personally call for a ceasefire in gaza. This morning, we have been here at this particular location , monitoring the situation. We tried to speak to the folks that are out and about outside of the tents. They said they did not want to speak on camera and could not provide us with any statement. You could certainly notice that there are palestinian flags and messages of support for that cause , and those criticizing israel. Where monitoring and acumen at the university of San Francisco where graduation ceremonies happen this afternoon. The deadline to disperse has come and gone. Protesters say they are moving. She left her family, including her two daughters in april for what was supposed to be a two week commission. Now, the crossing to egypt is closed and a letter trapped. Her brother has been fighting for her to return home. She wanted to be able to do more. Just the advocacy from here was not enough. Yesterday, when i was talking to her, we did text back and forth. One thing she was worried about was that she was not so worried about herself, her spirits were good, but she was worried that they were running out of supplies and medical supplies due to the Border Crossing and they could not help the people. She was also worried that she would be late back to work , so she could not see her patients here. I found that ironic, we are worried about her safety. One big challenge with getting her out is safely moving around rafah. He says his sister has been treating a lot of children. There is a scarcity of food and dehydration. There is all of the sicknesses that come with being homeless. That is what she is seeing. They had to get relocated due to the intensity of what was going on in rafah. Was moved to oakland. This is the first week for the citys new police chief, floyd mitchell. He previously served as the police chief of lubbock, texas. He replaces the former chief armstrong. Joining me now is the oakland mayor. Mitchell is just starting to take the reins. It has been a busy first week. Absolutely, he has been here for a few weeks, even prior to his official start date to get acclimated and meet with people. You know , even prior to his being here, oakland is turning the corner. The Public Safety strategies that we have implemented are paying off. We are seen after years of rising crime rates, overall crime, overall crime in oakland is actually down. Of course, we will not stop there. It is not good enough we will continue to keep pushing progress to make sure our comprehensive approach to Public Safety, including the reviving of the ceasefire strategy, that it not only makes oakland a safer place to be in, but also for the constituents to feel safe. We spoke to some residents that say one of the main issues is Public Safety for them when it comes to business crime. What is the new chiefs strategy to address those issues . We have strategies that we have implemented. It works. The data shows that it works. We will continue to be datadriven to ensure that the strategies we are implementing and we continue to press on the gas on the strategies. With that being said, the chief is really excited to meet with rankandfile and meet the many women of the police department. We are excited to get on the road. He wants to meet the community members. Stay tuned for that. We will have a leadership, Public Safety team townhome roadshow in the city of oakland. We are excited that. Lets talk about the homeless crisis. We have new numbers showing the Homeless Population did grow by 9 over the last 2 years. Can you talk about those numbers and what is being done to help the unhoused . Yes, we have increased by 9 . This is progress , absolutely. Im excited for the numbers. It shows that what we are doing is slowing down homelessness. The different Housing Solutions that we have, whether it is for permanent housing or for a temporary shelter, or permanent supportive housing, it is working. Of course, there are still too many people on our streets. One is too many. The idea is that we will be focused on not just investing in new housing, but the preservation of Affordable Housing, right . That means everybody has to work together. I have been at the white house, advocating a lot for the place based voucher. When we build Affordable Housing, the Affordable Housing comes with a voucher. We know it is very difficult for residents to have vouchers to be accepted by landlords. All the different avenues we are taking will be key in how we get out of the crisis. I want to say thank you to oakland voters. Even though we are in historical deficit, this will allow us to build deeply Affordable Housing here in the city of oakland. These projects are already shovel ready. Reporter mayor sheng thao, thank you for joining us. Thank you, thank you for having me.
