Screaming as in enthusiastic. Excited to learn about the capitol. You are such a great citizen and mom and its nice to have you back here. A life look outside on this wednesday morning. The view right now. We understand from Treasure Island look over to San Francisco. Its just looking like its time to sit down and write a little poetry in the morning. If you are up that early. It sounds like a song. Nominee. Thank you so much for shouting me out for that reed. All right, lets dive draught into the forecast and so happy to be forecasting for the bay area. Especially on a morning like this. May gray. Oh my Goodness Gracious, it has been sticking around and its kind of the big weather story for us as we head into the next couple of days. Luckily, we have a quiet weather pattern as we head into the rest of this week. And into this weekend. And early next week. Meaning no crazy storms coming our way. Temperatures are staying relatively mild right where they should be for this time of year. But we are still dealing with those cool and cloudy conditions in the Early Morning hours. And it pulls back along our coastline still staying cool and cloudy along the coast into the afternoon hours. So we have small daytoday changes and High Pressure is sitting directly offshore driving in some wind and moving offshore as we head into this afternoon. More about that coming up in just a bit. But to the map and lets talk about whats happening for us today. I have been saying it all weekand its true. This is the time of year where we really do see that temperature spread. 50s along the coast and 60s along the peninsula and 70s in the inland portions of the peninsula and then to the east bay and just sunny and feels almost like summer for some of us. 80s for some of us in antioch down into the santa clara valley. 80s pop up in areas like los gatos. The cool and cloudy start down into the santa clara valley. And along the coastline. More on that in bit. For now over to you, g. You know were off o a bit of a busy start this morning. In fact a live look here. This is looking at a big rig that spilled about 73 pounds of rice on the roadway there. This is west grant avenue at maritime street in oakland. It has also shut down that westbound 80 connector to west grant that off ramp there. So getting off the roadway there might be a bit difficult. This is a Traffic Alert and it will be there until further notice and you have a lot of activity there on scene because of that n but theres a lot of debris in the roadway. And you know, theyve got to work to clear all that out of lanes. Plus you have got a full closure there. So right now its quiet for the morning commute and knot a lot of issues and in fact to the bay bridge toll plaza and you can see things are moving along well but we will keep a close eye on that throughout the morning until the Traffic Alert and the big rick is uprighted because that could cause a mess later on today. Right now though traffic is moving okay heading into the city. Reed . All right, gianna. Thanks for that. We begin this morning looking live at uc berkeley. Protesters have started removing their encampments so this is what the encampment looks like right now. And this is what the encampment looked like at the beginning of may. When demonstrators set up their protests by the hundreds. So quite a change there. You know all along protesters demanded the university divest from any financial ties that could benefit israel. Well, fast forward to yesterday, protesters say they struck a deal with the university officials. Chancellor crist at cal telling them they will review the investments. The protesters want to know if cal is invested in any company. Cal says okay. Well review. However, the university rejected a full divestment from israel. Protesters packing up but that has as they leave this is nothe last we will hear from them. We got confirmation from the school this letter that weve been kind of building towards. Now what . Regents. Follow us to merced and people are setting up there now. So that is the next step. Uc merced meeting there the regents are going to be there discussing this and several other topics affecting our university system. So across the bay protesters at San Francisco state. They also reached an agreement with university officials. The students for gaza group says the university has committed to a divestment of weapons manufacturers and they pinpoint future investments that violate human rights. The different story over at usf. Protesters there not showing any sign of clearing out. The university told them to get out by 3 00 p. M. Yesterday. They would not face consequences and in response, protesters dug in their heels. They held a rally. However, the University Says they have no plans to forcibly remove the tents but do say any students that stay could be punished for violating the student code of conduct. So despite pausing bomb shipments to israel, due to concerns about their use in densely Populated Areas of rafah, two congressional sources confirm to cbs news that the Biden Administration intends to transfer 1 billion in weapons to israel. Looking live at oakland. Price won her seat with 53 of the vote back in 2022. Well, the permanence of hybrid work has really been a major challenge for the bay areas major cities as they try to reinvigorate their downtowns. But if you take a dive into cell phone data, you will see San Francisco, oakland and san jose are experiencing two realities. Slow in the daytime but busy at night. So taking a live look right now from san jose this morning, the city is nearing prepandemic activity levels during the day. And has surpassed them at night. Max darrow has a closer look. Reporter with this a. C. E. Train rolling into the san jose diridon station, allison is on her feet for the final leg of her commute to her downtown office. About 0 of the time i go into the office and i always take the train. Reporter shes commuted from pleasanton to san jose for a little over a year now. And hybrid work really works well for her. Much better with the flexibility. Than having to come in every single day. Reporter however, hybrid work has posed many challenges for downtown san joses postpandemic recovery. Zincifier people are physically here during the monday to friday working hours of 8 00 a. M. To 6 00 p. M. Pretty quiet. Reporter but the problem here is less pronounced that happened it is in San Francisco and in oakland. University of Toronto School of cities has tracked downtown recoveries for several years now by using cell phone data to measure activity levels and of the bay areas three major cities, their data shows downtown san jose is the furthest along with workweek recovery. While its still not back to prepandemic activity levels during the day, its almost there at about 85 . Dr. Karen chapel heads up the Research Team and says san jose is on the right track. San jose is an easier one actually. Because its it hasnt been as volatile. It its been it came back pretty steadily. Reporter dont be fooled though. Its still quieter downtown during the day than businesses are used to. We have a group of 40 coming in. Reporter Randy Musterer is leaning into hosting more events at his restaurant sushi confidential at san pedro square because hes still missing it on the lunch rush. You cant just open up the doors anymore and just hope people in. You have to be creative. Reporter however, on weeknights, in downtown san jose, its a different story. Dinner time and then, you know, the bar and nightclub industries are thriving down here. Reporter thriving. Not a word youd expect to hear. But it adds up per the school of cities cell phone data showing downtown san joses weeknight recovery rate is at 116 . Musterer says their weeknight sales peak between 7 30 and 9 00 p. M. Lot of time, money and energy being put into the downtown core. Reporter however. Cost of everything has gone up. So even though now our sales are at prepandemic levels, it doesnt mean that profitability is there yet. So were striving for that. Reporter the obvious solution . More people downtown. Probably the biggest thing is, is having more people working down here. I know that theres a big push with downtown san jose trying to become the ai hub of not only the silicon valley, but of the world. Reporter allison thinks activity levels could continue to rise if the city continues to tackle the homelessness crisis. And actually right here, there will used to be a huge homeless camp. And theyve theyve done a great job. Much different than when i first moved here and started. You know, you dont have to worry as much about your safety. Reporter on the days she is there, she really enjoys being in downtown san jose. This area its great. Reporter even though she doesnt live there and its not her downtown, she is invested in the future of downtown san jose and its place in an always evolving bay. Well, dr. Chapel says san jose is on the right track and expects that trend to continue. Time 5 10. A sense of relief for People Living in big sur. The timeline to reopen highway 1 is moved up. And i think its just kind of nice and moody and makes me want to go to city lights and get a book. Wear sort of one of those caps. Have you been to author or emmy nominee like you jess. You guys are so sweet. Have you been to the library up in mill valley . Yes. The one with the huge windows. Yeah. Best rainy day spot handsdown. Nobody in the bay steal that from me. Okay. All right. I just told everybody to go do it. Always going to share. Fight for the two seats. Whats going on outside on a morning like this . Yeah, its may gray. We know that. Weve been dealing with it all week long. And luckily we know now as we head into the afternoon hours, if you live down into the santa clara valley, off in the east bay, or even for our friends in redwood city for that matter, it bleeds off and it pulls back along the coastline and were left with sunnier joys into the afternoon hours but for our coastline areas, halfmoon bay, pacifica, i should have just asked gianna. She knows. She lives along the coastline. And its always a lot cooler and cloudier during this time of year with 50s in the forecast like this afternoon and a completely different forecast all the way up into napa and sonoma. With 70s right around the corner for us as we head into this afternoon. But other than that, lets dive into the winds too. Light winds for us as we wake up this morning and that doesnt really help break apart the cloud layer by any means. But in the afternoon hours wind gusts up to around 25 Miles Per Hour and gets really annoying for dog walks like me and chopper when were walking up San Francisco hills but the onshore flow stays consistent and it moves its way up into napa and fairfield too. So keep that in mind. Some gustier conditions are expected the more into the afternoon we go. Now our forecast doesnt change too much. Daybyday and ill show you that coming up in just a second. Keeping the storm rock at that time north of us and Pacific Northwest will get hit with some showers this week but back here in the bay just kind of told you the forecast. 70s and 80s in the forecast in our inland areas. 60s along the coastline. So a quiet weather pattern for us as we head into the next couple of days. And into this weekend as well. Better yet lets just show you that right now. Each of the tubes shows you what the weather is going to look like for that day. Were expecting 70s all week long on average throughout the inland areas and like i mentioned if you live closer to our coastline lot cooler there but luckily all of us have something in similarity. Once we head into early next week, well see plenty of sunshine right around the corner which is promising and no days of rain in sight anytime soon. G . All right, jess, thank you. Lets talk about the roadways this morning. And we are going to start off with a live look here. This is as you look over that overpass here. This is coming out of the east bay heading into San Francisco. This is right at west 80 near grand near maritime. Theres a big rig that toppled over and unfortunately, theyve got a big mess to clean up. 73,000 pounds of rice. Thats a lot of rice scattered all over the roadway. Thats what the big rig was hauling so theyve got to clean all that up. Plus theyve got the upright the big rig and get it out of lanes. In the meantime taking westbound 80 to the westbound grand off ramp. Its blocked until further notice. No reports of any major injuries. But theres certainly a lot of activity in and around there. Just keep that in mind as you commute this morning. Okay, a look at traffic elsewhere. Couple of other things over at the bay bridge toll plaza, no metering lights just yet. Traffic quiet. Heading into San Francisco for now. Well let you know if that changes with the closure on grand there. But if you are making that commute heading westbound 80, new reports of a crash heading towards university and a new crash, this is westbound 580 right after 205. As you head into the altamont pass. So this is a busy area anyway that left lane is blocked and this crash, there are injuries reported. So pretty busy coming out of tracy this morning. Well, a part of highway 1 near big sur will reopen friday morning and governor Gavin Newsoms office says that is nearly eight days ahead of schedule. So some good news there. Back in march, a storm triggered a rock slide and left this section of the road right here impassable. All right, taking a live look at San Francisco and your giants will return to the field at oracle park today to stop the dodgers from taking a series sweep. After yesterdays loss San Francisco has now lost six out of their last ten games. Yes. That hurts the teeth and the tongue to say. Despite the losses though, fans out in mccovey cove feel like theyre winning on the cove. The name of the game is to catch and then splash. Gets pretty competitive on the water but he got it. The only problem has been that fans there can hear the game. But they couldnt really see it until now. Lauren toms reports some of the giants most dedicated fans are pretty happy about a change that actually lets them see the game. Reporter baseball on the water, only in San Francisco. And sea faring fans say a new change to their viewing experience is not only making it more enjoyable to watch from some of the most unique seats in the mlb, but safer to watch from the water. Every mlb season, for 58 games, mark the shark garrett paddles out to the cove and comes back emptyhanded. But he says the two times he usually troves a splash hand are addictive. For a minute, you dont really realize its like oh i got the ball and then about two seconds later its holy crap i just got a splash hit because theres only so many of them and right now were sitting on 103. When 104 hits, you want to be a number and the only way you become a number is to get a splash hit. Reporter and it isnt just about chasing that goal. Mark says his time on the water has helped him conquer a history of anxiety and depression. When i hop in that cove, i dont know if there was any worries today. Its gone for the three, hour hours im in the cove. Reporter for seven seasons mark patiently listened to the radio taking guidance on each lefthanded batter but thanks to an invest. From the giants that reportedly cost 100,000 he now has 12foot screen to watch from the water. Were not used to it yet. Its like i think you know just one of those things its like wows, this is so cool. At first we were like wow, this is different. Did it take the mystique away of not knowing and seeing it . We were all excited and then it was like yeah. It changed real quick. Reporter another legendary kayaker is dave, better known as mccovey cove dave. He says the new screen is taking the viewing experience into the modern era. Kind of like when i had a black and white tv at home and my dad bought a color tv in 1965. I couldnt live without it. Reporter its also expected to attract more kayakers adding another level ovicyst for fans on the hunt for a smash hit. Whats happening were seeing already is the more casual fan that doesnt bring a radio. Theyre watching the tv. So its kind of like an Early Warning system. Reporter both superfans are holding out hope for a big catch this series against the dodgers. A splash hit from lefthanded japanese player and dodger shohei ohtani. Were all giants fans. We want ohtanis home run if it goes out there we have no control who hits the ball in the cove. But if his ball goes in the cove, boy, were going to want it. Reporter keeping their eyes on the ball and the screen out in the cove. Standing 12 feet by 7 feet. This right here is what its all about. Most people dont have a 12foot tv in their homes. But these guys tell me that mock covey cove has become like a it could home and the excitement for the kayakers doesnt stop here, im told the giants are investing in a ramp down on pier 48 to make it easier for these kayakers to paddle their way into mccovey cove and deep doing what they love most. How cool is that . I would a. Am and i just talking about this again. Again shoutout to producer adam. We literally want to do that. Try to catch a home run ball. That would be fun. No matter where you are. Or your community station, north, south and east and west and jess has to be an expert because of course we have microclimates everywhere. They are all doing Something Different and real fast before we cut to me real quick, gianna, what was it like for the past couple of days just being along the coast. Yesterday was mostly cloudy i think and i spend most of the day in sacramento. But on monday it was actually perfect and it was beautiful weather. Good to know because the next couple of days our coastal areas theyre going to be seeing a lot more clouds sticking around for us. Especially as we head into the afternoon hours. Well dive into that in just a second and lets start off this morning with a beautiful live look at the sunrise. That none of us can see because lets just turn the camera a little bit this way. This is what were waking up to. Cloudy, Cool Conditions and that marine layer still holdingen tight to us this morning. All throughout the bay area. And anywhere from San Francisco stretching down into the santa clara valley. Where that cloud layer you can see just kind of blankets all of los gatos and san jose and everywhere inbetween. But luckily later into this afternoon, that cloud layer is actually going to pull back and well see sunnier skies into the afternoon hours. Were expecting 70s and 80s for our daytime highs there. Off in the east bay, 50s and 60s along the coast and the peninsula. And here we go all the way up into wine country. And all throughout marin too. Were expecting 70s in the forecast for us today in nose local regions. A look at the weather headlines of course its cool and cloudy and may gray is definitely here in full force. But we are going to continue to see a beautiful sunny setup for us in the afternoon hours in the inland areas with some cool and cloudier conditions near g in her neck of the woods. Luckily highs remain where we should be at this time of year, a repeat of tomorrow daybyday this weekends forecast. Suddenly sunday is right around the corner and were going to be talking about beta breakers coming up in just a bit. Expecting 50s for the forecast for us in the Morning Hours on sunday. And from now until then, little daytoday changes are going to happen. More on that in a bit. For now over to you, g. All right, taking a look at the roadways right now. Getting ready to head out the door, headsup. A live look here. This is west grand avenue at maritime street. You can see there at the overpass, theres a big rig that toppled over unfortunately. And looks like theyve got a tow truck on scene there trying to get this upright and out of the way. 73,000 pounds of rice have been spilled in the roadway. So a Traffic Alert is in effect. Westbound 80 to westbound grand avenue maritime street that off ramp will be closed until further notice. So as far as delays go, were not seeing a ton of a backup there as far as the backup goes. If you are headed over towards the gradual traffic is actually moving okay. Its still quite early. A live look here at the bay bridge and you can see not a bad commute just yet. Traffic is moving along okay through there. Again it shouldnt impact most of the roadway and well let you know if that changes though. You are taking westbound 80 to the bay bridge, right now traffic is okay. All right, g, thank you so much. Lets look live at San Francisco right now. And have a talk about this. That some relief to consumers, but coming up in the next hour were going to break down the report with cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger. American eagle is joining the exodus at the San Francisco center announcing plans to shut its doors. The location is scheduled to close permanently in july. Well, we can continue to be wowed and maybe a little weirded out by what Ai Developers have been showing off at this weeks developer conference in the bay. One day after chatgpt showed up a their innovations, google showing off its latest ai plans. Its all happening at a developer conference. So heres how googles gemini 1. 5 works. So say you are on gmail. You can ask gemini to compile a calendar of events at your Childs School based shoal seoully on recent emails. We also saw how it can scan a textbook and turn it all of a sudden into a voice lecture. Even ask virtual instructors questions about the material. Watch. To make educational videos more interactive allowing you to ask a clarifying question and get a helpful explanation. Also project astra. Allowing videos you take on phone to answer questions. Also circumstance toll search which allows you to circle or tap or even text and then it does the automatic search to find out even more about it. Pretty fascinating. I see some advantages to some of it for example like curating all the emails from the school on to the calendar. That can be so much. I dont know about the not reading. File like the vocabulary what you learn from reading is a big deal. Which and why we had the harvard professor on saying this is going to change the way we grade papers from now on. Generated by ai and sort of like all of us, is this image real or a fake . Pretty fascinating. It is. A live look outside on this wednesday morning. Lets peek on over and look at sfo and i always wonder where everyone is going. Maybe hawaii because i wish i was going there too right now. Jess . Good morning. Hows the forecast looking . Its looking good actually. Good morning. You know, im flying today if you want to come up to napa airport this afternoon. Just going to be doing traffic patterns not that exciting. But as we take a look flying forecast and for all of us on the ground, looking great for us. Of course we are still waking up to may gray. But i mean, surface level visibility, at least at the bay bridge right now, not that bad. Visibility is good. But we are waking up to those cool and cloudy skies just above us. And honestly thats going to be the trend for us as we head into the next couple of days. We have sun in the afternoon forecast for us as that cloud layer pulls back along the coastline. Area lake pacifica and halfmoon bay will still see cloudy skies but near concord and antioch and Goodness Gracious down into the santa clara valley, up into wine country, you get the drill. You know its going to be another sunny day for us later this afternoon. A little bit gustier though in the afternoon. Thats in a second. Daytime highs around normal and thats thanks to High Pressure offshore. What we have today is pretty much what we have for the rest of this week. And once we head into this weekends forecast, its more of the same. Were going to kick off the Morning Hours with 50s in areas like San Francisco and Perfect Timing for bay to breakers to happen. And were going to talk more about that as we get closer but lets take a step back and i want to dive into the forecast today. 60s for our daytime highs near San Francisco. Are going to highlight all of the way across the bay bridge over into oakland too. We actually have 70s and 80s near concord and antioch. 70s near napa this afternoon. With wind gusts anywhere up to around 25 Miles Per Hour at max close to around 5 00 this afternoon. Once we head down into the santa clara valley, lighter winds are expected in the south bay this afternoon. 79 for our daytime highs in san jose but we hit the 80s near actually just near los gatos. So its another warm day there. Kind of like antioch. Now im going to drop the map and im going to show you the next seven days. Because as we head into this weeks forecast, we notice little daytoday changes. Significant enough to notice that theres a little bit of a cooldown, for example today were in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Once we head into the friday to saturday forecast, a new system rolls in and it will cool us down in the low 70s but gosh, other than that, this is actually a pretty mild forecast for us. Beautiful nonetheless. Then once we head into next week we have plenty of sunshine in and store for us. Jess, thank you. Taking a look at the roadways right now. Weve got the overturned semi stuck here blocking lanes from west grand to the off ramp there. Right at grand avenue and maritime street in oakland. You can see theyre working to clear it. You have got some movement up there but about 73,000 pounds of rice also spilled in the roadway. Its going to take some time to clear this one out of lanes. Its been out there since about 2 15 this morning. So several hours now for this closure. As far as the impact to traffic, keeping a close eye on here looks like vehicles are being rerouted pretty easily through there. So lets get a live look now at the bay bridge toll plaza this morning. Or just a look at some of the other commutes this morning as we head on over to our maps. To take a look at traffic elsewhere. I can tell you its already backed up at the bay bridge and metering lights are on and definitely seeing things getting pretty slow through there. Not causing too much of what you would expect on a wednesday morning. Earlier crash Near University but overall the its business as usual at least on the eastshore freeway. Filipinos, were 2,000 plus years of mixings and matching many different cultures and our fighting style reflects just that. Reporter master Joseph Bautista has been running a Martial Arts School in the bay area for almost 15 years. He says its not often to find a place focused on this style. With filipino martial arts unique in its emphasis on using weapons. Students range from ages 4 to 80. To have a place that you can identify as something that comes from our own culture from your own ancestors, whatnot, right . It really speaks to the heart. Reporter located in daly city, which has one of the largest populations of filipinos outside of the philippines, even for joseph, he says there was a disconnect between him and his culture. Until he started to explore filipino martial arts. All around are reminders of that culture to help his students appreciate the language and history that into with this style of fighting. I think for people to have a better understanding of what they are capable of doing, they need to be able to identify with someone which they see doing what they want to do themselves. Reporter that chance to honor your heritage is what keeps him and others like camille going. Both able to now share this piece of their identity with others. I feel like it was very serendipitous and what i needed at the moment. So next month, legacy will celebrate its second anniversary by the way june is also the month of philippines independence day.
