Extended forecast in just a few minutes. This morning, interstate 80 is back nope fairfield and traffic is moving normally once again. Quite a backup last night fooling threehour shutdown in both directions. All due to a freeway shooting suspect that spanned across multiple counties. Chp say the suspect in a toyota sedan was initially involved in a shooting 11 00 in the morning. Highway 101 north of santa rosa. The spot operation played out in front of our cameras. Chp said the suspect shot himself and now in Critical Condition this morning in the hospital. We are shown what happened during that standoff. Reporter instead of waiting hours on the road for the traffic to involve roar Colleen Knapp decided to wait it out on the side county road. Unbelievable. Not your typical friday night. Reporter wild chase through four counties. Highway california patrol officers trying to slow the Toyota Corolla with spike strips but the driver navigated around him. A woman in santa rosa said someone shot into her car. Gave officers the description of the car and spotted in roner park and when the pursuit began. Came to answered near cordelia where the swat team cornered the suspect and the standoff began. In a joint effort why the Fairfield Police department, officers smashed the back Win Development car to get a better look inside. Police deployed several flash bangs with no affect. Chp telling us that the man had a gas mask with him in the car. Officers eventually discovered that the driver had shot himself. Police used cpr right away and the suspect was taken away in an ambulance. While all of this was going on in a span of several hours, drivers parked on 80 were left wonder what was going on. People were rolling their windows down and they were saying, maam, maam, do you know what is going on . I said, i dont know. Maybe cal trans is working on the road. I kept acting siri. She didnt have any answers for me. So [ laughter ] reporter officers in santa rosa say the womb in santa rosa was not hurt and they do not believe that the suspect and victim knew each other. Investigators are looking what led up to you that shooting in the first place. And again, we know that the suspect survived a selfinflicted gunshot wound. So their that person has not been publicly identified. A department say two officers were shot putting their lives on the line helping a mom and her three kids. This morning, one of the three officers are out of the hospital and the other one in Critical Condition and is told is expected to survive. They were wounded last thursday night during a gun battle at a motel. As our dal lynn reports, the suspect tried to escape by jumping out of a thirdfloor win window. Reporter San Jose Police surrounded extended stay america on st. Ignacio avenue after a gun battle erupted. 33yearold suspect wonderful kevin brions shot two officers. One returned fire. Hotel guest heard some of the gunshots from his room. It sounded like a pow, pow thing. Reporter four times . About four times, yeah. Reporter silas said responding officers told him to shelter in place. Stay in your rooms. Be safe. Dont open your doors. Stay in. Reporter officers responded to a Domestic Violence call around 150 30 on the third floor. A mother and children were sheltering on the sore side of a thin hotel door from a known man be who admittedly committed violence on them. Reporter acting police chief paul joseph say that mother already has a restraining order against the suspect. Unclear if the mother or children were living in the hotel to stay away from the suspect or how he found them. The Department Released a couple of photos taken from the officers chest cams. Briones walked away from the hotel room when he saw the two responding officers. When the officers tried to talk to him, he reached into a duffel bag, pulled out a gun and shot the officers. The suspect fled running a way i from the officers shooting multiple rounds at him. One officer returned fire and struck the suspect. Reporter the suspect jumped out of a thirdfloor hallway window. Backup officers arrested him nearby. Briones sustained lifethreatening injuries. He is stabilized in Critical Condition. Officers contacted the mother and children hide in the hotel room. It became apparent their lives were likely saved by the responding officers. In the room was the survivor of a recent Domestic Violence attack. The suspect had an arrest warrant for that Domestic Violence incident. Also hide in the hotel room were three children, ages 8, 10 and 15. Reporter the acting chief say they recovered a stolen handgun used by the suspect. He has an extensive criminal history. Say also a staying at the hotel to receive routine Cancer Treatment at a nearby hospital, he is glad the family is safe. Shootings and it has becoming prevalent. Police say the officer who was released from the hospital has been with the department for three and a half years. The officer still in the hospital has been with the force for about a year. In San Francisco, police busted an illegal gambling operation in the hrt of the tenderloin. They seized more than a dozen gaming machines. The bust happened at the 700 block of he will advice street near the city Staff College civicenter campus. Police reported finding drugs and paraphernalia. Made multiple arrests and a 45yearold man they believe was running the operation. Provided a picture of what they say was a loaded gun they confiscated during their search. Aprils tornado count in the United States is now the second highest in the month on record. According to the National Weather service, the u. S. Had at least 300 tornadoes in the month of april. On average, there are 182 tornadoes reported during the month. But just last week, more than 100 were reported across the country. Most violent to date was an ef 4 that hit oklahoma at the end of april. The upcoming months of may and june, the National Weather service is expected to see even higher totals. The first weekend of may is off to a wet and, well, cold start. Temperatures really arent going to change that much at all where where they are rights now.
