16 people hurt and a city bus wrecked, some say it happened in an alltoofamiliar location. It was a massive water main break has eroded their confidence to live near this area. And today we take you to a bagel business betting on downtown. Good morning, thank you for starting your day with us, today is saturday, march 9th, im max darrow. We begin in the east bay where 16 people were hurt after a car crashed into an ac transit bus, it happened in oakland, the car was going out of control following a separate crash moments earlier. People who live near this intersection tell Andrea Nakano the street where it happened might be a big heart of the problem. This is the bus that was involved in the crash and it wasnt even directly involved in the crash, the collision happened a little bit up the road and one of the cars violently flew into the front of that bus. Daniel saw the crash and the aftermath, it happened in the peak of commute hours just before 5 00. Rosa helped us translate what he witnessed. That is the car right there, the people pulled out the guy, and they left him on the floor, it looked like his leg was swollen. Reporter he saw at least one of the cars going roughly 100 miles per hour. According to the spokesperson from ac transit, the speeding car lost control. The chrysler 300, as im told, struck a second passenger car, a toyota that was attempting a left turn from south Bound International on 2 54 avenue. Reporter according to an Organization Called traffic violence rapid response, international boulevard has seen 18 fatal traffic accidents over the last two years and this is one of the deadliest intersections. Our organization has held two vigils for people who have been killed here at 54th and international. Reporter with many of these accidents, speed is to blame. It is almost every block, every light, people are speeding down at top speed, running red lights, it is extremely dangerous. Reporter at this point there is nothing to indicate that the chrysler was racing another car, but residents want action to make the streets safer. We need to put a stop to it because it is very dangerous. Despite how bad this looked, late last night, police said only one of the injured victims was in the hospital and that person is expected to be okay. Police and the east bay are investigating a couple of brazen burglaries over the course of two days, thieves used aucto steal an atm at the gas station market. And just the night before, burglars used a van to try to drag a safe out of an oakland jewelry repair shop about four miles away on grand avenue. But, in both of these cases, from all of their efforts, they got away emptyhanded. Reporter im told investigators from the two Police Departments are sharing notes, while the cases have similarities, it is unclear if they are connected. This is Surveillance Footage of the first burglary at grand jewelry repair, near oaklands lake merritt, it happened on thursday morning around 3 45 a. M. , two vehicles and five burglars. The store owners son said they used a van and a rope to drag open the metal gate. Once inside, they used the same rope to try to drag a large safe out. But it snapped, so they took a heavy metal chain and put that over the safe and that is when they were able to drag it out. Reporter it was so heavy, it took them a while to secure it to the back of the van. They couldnt quite get it into the utility truck so it was dragging, you could see a bunch of sparks. As they were getting on the freeway, pd was right behind them, that is why they dropped it. Reporter the burglars took off in the middle of the road, police recovered the safe which contained thousands of dollars in jewelry and watches. The jewelry repair shop also experienced significant damage when the burglars dragged the safe through the store. The owner was in tears when he saw the damage on thursday. This is 34 years of my life there, but i dont know if we are going to come back. Now he is thinking about retirement. But it is more like a forced retirement because he doesnt feel safe. Reporter it is the second costly burglary in three years at the store. The immigrant who escaped the war in vietnam says they cant seem to escape the crime in oakland. Thank you to all the customers who supported us for 34 years. Reporter burglars used a uhaul truck to back into these glass doors, they used a chain to drag an atm machine out of the gas station. I feel desensitized, like this is a normal occurrence in the bay area and it is sad to feel like that. Reporter Alameda Police say they were able to quickly recover the truck and the atm in oakland, but in both cases, they got away. The family says these burglaries are killing small businesses. We need leaders to bootstrap up, we need more hands on the ground and actually lead, do something. Reporter this happens so often, some Bay Area Stores have removed atm machines, some stores no longer accept cash, only credit and debit cards to avoid robberies. After a massive water main break in San Francisco, some people who live nearby i worry that a hillside could collapse. Here is what it looked like from above, water was shooting 60 feet up into the air. This was on the 1700 block right next to stern grove. Crews worked from yesterday morning into the afternoon to get the water shut off. The real concern is this, take a look at this on your screen, it is a river of mud that started flowing by the neighborhood. I heard a crack, then boom, and i saw the water started shooting up. I didnt know how much the soil will get eroded from the water washing down the hill. Stern grove has had a lot of trees come down, it is a precarious area. The city worked to make sure the hillside was stable. And this is not the first time that a water main break caused drama in the same neighborhood, you might remember this back in 2021, a break flooded stern grove, forcing the cancellation of the final concert. We have light rain showers moving into the north bay this morning but today is not going to be a washout, showers are largely going to fall apart and most of us will see a couple of sprinkles but a stronger system will send more moisture to us and a better rain chance is in the forecast by tomorrow afternoon and continuing into tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. Todays rain chance will peak late morning north of the golden gate then we taper off in the afternoon. In between showers, it is going to be a cool day, amateurs topping out in the 50s and 60s. A few degrees below normal for the middle of march. This week has been a bumpy ride for united airlines. On friday, one of the jets took off from sfo and had to make an Emergency Landing at l. A. X. This time it was for a hydraulic problem. Hours later , another united flight skidded off the runway after landing in houston. Check it out, it is stuck in the mud. And of course on thursday, a wheel came off a united flight as it took off from sfo, the tire fell off the plane in midair and landed on a car. The plane landed safely at l. A. X. , and nobody was hurt. Retail activity in San Francisco is lagging in many big stores have either closed up or say they are planning to do so. There are some Business Owners who see this moment as an opportunity to bet on downtown San Francisco. Wilson walker talked with the owner of a bay area bagel empire about why she is putting her dough on the idea that downtown will rise once again. You can see it just gets wrapped up and the ends get stuck together and it comes out like a bagel. Reporter Emily Winston is watching the early moments in the creation of a bagel and this is decidedly hightech. And weve got a robot arm that picks it up and puts it on the rack. And that prevents a ton of repetitive stress, injury, and workers comp issues. Reporter even the Newest Technology does not replace the most essential elements of this old art form. We are doing the Old School New york bagel process here and i have not added any automation, this is exactly as it has been done for the last 100 years. Reporter it is that knack of blending tradition and modernity, pushing them into the center of the bagel universe. We are probably running the most technically advanced bagel operations right now. My background is Mechanical Engineering so i love this. This is where i get to shine. Reporter it is easy to see how this passion for the modest bagel has translated into not just success but international acclaim. My wildest fantasy was that the New York Times media would one day say my bagels are okay, and they came and said we are even better than new york, which is completely nuts. I have a lot of people that are super excited to see a woman building a business that is so successful and gaining ground so publicly and it is an honor to be a role model like that. Im super stoked. Im excited to change the bagel industry. Reporter they moved in 2016, and you know, you miss a good bagel if you have been living on the east coast your whole life. Im bullish on downtown, im investing in downtown. Reporter winston said the following lease prices have created the perfect opportunity to position for the years ahead and what she sees as the inevitable San Francisco rebound and the next chapter four their incredible expansion from a single store to a Bay Area Institution in just four years. The question was, where and when, and i dont want to build 40 stores around the bay area, we are going to keep it to about maybe 10 or 12. People want good bagels, they are desperate for good bagels. 7 12 on this saturday morning, a mystery off the coast of orange county, crews continue to clean up a large oil slick in the ocean but the question remains, how did it get there . And here is a look outside at sfo on this saturday morning, shaping up to be a nice weekend, stick around, we will be right back. Welcome back, here is a beautiful look at the Golden Gate Bridge on this saturday morning, it is shaping up to be a wonderful day in the bay area, it is 7 15. The coastguard says it has cleaned up about 85 of an oil sheen floating in the ocean near huntington beach. At this point it is unclear if that was the source of tarballs that washed up along the shoreline. It stuck on my hands and my feet, it is not the easiest thing to get off. It is a bunch of tar that we stepped on, i mean we can see it along the shoreline. Never a fun situation. The two and a halfmile slick was spotted thursday evening, not far from a pair of offshore platforms but the coast guard is not exactly sure where it came from. Rain showers making their way into the north bay this morning, that is the best chance of anything, more than a trace of rainfall is going to remain, that area will fall apart as it tries to move into the rest of the bay area. A better chance of more widespread and slightly heavy rain in the forecast beginning tomorrow afternoon and continuing into the early hours of monday morning but a little bit of a break on monday before another system sends rain monday night and tuesday. None of this will lead to any potential flooding threats, we dry out and warm up by the end of next week. The showers this morning are just falling apart as we head into the early afternoon, we will see if you breaks in the cloud cover but still sunshine for most of us today. Then we have the next area of rain that is going to be moving into the north bay by about midday on sunday, spreading across more of the bay area as we head through sunday afternoon and sunday evening. If you add up both systems, a 10th of an inch to about a third of an inch of total rainfall, maybe the coastal ranges picking up closer to half an inch, but even when you add the additional round of rain on top of it monday night into tuesday, we are talking about less than an inch of rain with all three systems put together. For the sierra, this is going to be a snow maker, but more snow with that system that moves in monday night into tuesday and that is when we are likely to add up closer to a foot of accumulation especially on the higher elevations. In between showers today it is going to be cool overall, with temperatures only topping out in the low to mid 60s in the Santa Clara Valley and those will be the warm spots around the region. The rain chances are keeping a lid on how much we warm up. Low 60s in the east bay, everybody else around 60 degrees at best, just below 60 degrees in San Francisco. And the north bay because we have the best chance of rain, you are going to top out in the upper 50s this afternoon. Similar temperatures for everybody on sunday with rain moving back in the afternoon. If youre looking forward to a longer stretch of dry weather, you have it in the longrange outlook. Through st. Patricks day weekend, showing a good chance of drier than normal conditions and a good chance of warmer than normal conditions. That timeframe looks like we will see the warm spots approaching 80 degrees, at least for the day before st. Patricks day next saturday. In the shortterm, it is unsettled and cool as we head through today and tomorrow, monday a little break from the shower activity but still a chance of a passing shower. Monday night and tuesday, one last batch of rain, then we begin the stretch of dry weather with temperatures warming up into the 70s for basically everybody except for the coast. This morning we have an update on californias most popular lovebirds, we are talking about jackie and shadow, the two bald eagles currently living in big bear valley. This is the camera feed of them. They have been watching as the parents have kept their eggs warm throughout the series of winter storms. One of those eggs may not end up hatching. The first of the eggs laid in january has passed the incubation time so experts say that is likely not viable, the two eggs are still within the incubation window so we are keeping our fingers crossed. Northern californias recent blizzard dropped 100 inches of snow over the course of four days. But it ended the snow drought nonetheless at the tail end of the warmest february ever of record on earth. We are seeing signs of an early spring. Kelsi thorud describes the possible reason behind the weather whiplash. Reporter it was a monster blizzard. The storm slammed california with heavy snow, high wind and treacherous whiteout conditions. But the aftermath simply epic, in just four days, 6 to 10 feet of snowfall, concern over the snow drought evaporated. However, we have yet to dig ourselves out of the much bigger problem. It may appear hard to fathom but this blockbuster blizzard with all of this snow may have links to our warming planet. Experts believe Global Warming may be supercharging some of our snowstorms, while boosting the risk for a rapid snowmelt. Climate change is affecting the underlying set of possibilities for what the weather system is capable of doing. Reporter andrew jones is a climate scientist at the Berkeley National lab, his research involves hydroclimate extremes and snow dynamics in particular. This blizzard got his attention. This was a very interesting storm. Reporter a warming planet should mean less snow. It really does highlight this conundrum that we see Climate Change causing two counteracting forces at the same time. Reporter with this blizzard, cold arctic air made a beeline to california, on the way it traveled over the warming pacific ocean, warming due in part to Climate Change. The higher temperatures in the ocean and the air allowed the atmosphere to hold more water. The Ocean Temperatures are warm right now and so this cold massive air that moved down has picked up heat and picked up moisture as it was moving across the pacific. Reporter creating a warmer and wetter storm that was still below freezing. Jones is keeping his eye on the snowpack and with good reason. February was the ninth straight month in a row to be the warmest on record globally. Because the conditions are warmer, the snow might melt faster than usual. Reporter jones is helpful for new strategies that could capture water and direct it underground, he says it is not too late to slow down Climate Change. We do have to be aware of the changes that are happening and start to prepare for them. Reporter so we can weather any storm.
