Caltrans shared video showing vehicles briefly trapped on highway 50 over the weekend. Hundreds of vehicles headed to and from tahoe felt the impact as snow piled up. For the first time this winter, the California Department of Water Resources says the statewide snow water equivalent, thats how much water is in the snow, is above average. More snow now means more snow melt later. Promising a critical water source for the state in warmer weather when this winter storm is just a distant memory. At palisades tahoe, strong winds caused some problem, actually blew out the windows in this part of the building that controls the ski lift. Completely filling it with snow, as you see. A lot to clean up there. Other at sierra at tahoe, theyve been trying to dig out of this, the bottom of one of their chair lifts was buried this afternoon. Our kelsi thorud has been a trooper this week covering this storm from truckee and standing out in the blizzard doing her live shot after live shot for hours. At one point she and her photographer jim could pairly get out of their Hotel Parking lot. But with interstate 80 back open, they managed to finally make it out today. Here we go, were at the summit. So this is how things are looking up here. Its still down to just one lane of traffic. And now were starting to make our way down hill, but you can see all the snow. Yeah, paul had been talking about it for days in no uncertain terms. Paul, i have to say, you were very clear. Youre very clear when you say do not drive to the mountains when it gets like that. And we saw so many people we were just talking about it before the show so many people stuck. I08 was closed for days. The reason is just a ton of snow. These are the amounts that piled up in the sierra. Sugar bowl, 10. 5 feet of snow. Thats just a mind boggling number. Soda springs was close to that, just under ten feet. Eight feet on the dot at palisades tahoe, and a 190mileanhour wind gust, one of the peaks above palisades. The Central Sierra Snow Lab picked up just over six feet of snow out of this system. The snow showers are winding down, and it has made a huge difference. The average of the percentage of average where we were a couple months ago was 25 of normal snowfall as of late january. But as excuse me, late december, early january. Its monday, my brain hasnt kicked in yet. Weve caught up to what is normal this time of year. When you total up the three regions, were very slightly above whats normal. Showers over the north bay, similar activities in storm for us tomorrow. Its not going to add up to a whole lot. Were going to be seeing just a chance for a few showers here and there, mostly more miss than hit, but theres still a chance, so grab the umbrella, the rain jacket as youre heading out early tomorrow morning. Lets take a look at how much rain did accumulate. Well see if i can speak clearly for the rest of this weathercast. The amounts are variable depending on where those heaviest downpours set up. In general, we expected about an inch to two inches of total rainfall out of the dours of the four days of wet weather we experienced, and thats about what we added up. Some spots falling a little bit short, but almost two inches of total rainfall for downtown san francisco. Also just short of two inches of rain around novato. The Santa Cruz Mountains picked up more than 3 inches of rain over the course of that fourday timeframe from thursday through yesterday with some of those lingering showers still out there today. Theres another chance of rain heading our way on wednesday, so lets pick up futurecast and start the clock here wednesday morning when most of us are still going to be dry. The bulk of the energy with this system, bulk of the moisture is going to miss us to the south. Gives us one of our better chances of rain as we head through wednesday into wednesday afternoon. But its not going to amount to very much at all. Less than 0. 25 an inch of rain pretty much across the board. Its not a guarantee everybody is going to see measurable rain. A 50 50 chance. The unsettled weather pat certain going to continue. The six to ten day outlook from the Climate Prediction Center takes us through the weekend into the first half of next week. Its a good chance of wetter than normal conditions in that timeframe. Beyond the sevenday forecast the eight to 14day outlook sends us back into a normal midmarch weather pattern, which means some rain chances, but they should get spaced out more as we head farther into the month of march. Right now as we look towards downtown, seeing a mix of clear skies and a lot of cloud cover as well thats keeping temperatures from teardroping off too far. Down to 46 in livermore, 49 in santa rosa. Everybody else still in the 50s. Mostly leveling off in the 40s as we head through the rest of tonight with temperatures being held up a little bit by that layer of clouds overhead, keeping too much of the warmth from today from escaping into space, what little warmth we had with temperatures running five to seven degrees below average. The best chance of showers is going to be for the north bay. Thats where temperatures are cooler, upper 50s to around 60 degrees. Most of the rest of the bay area in the low to mid60s, which is close to if maybe still a degree or two below whats normal for this time of year. We do have warmer temperatures late they are week to go along with a break in the rain chances, so theres some good news, what youve been waiting for. After scattered showers on wednesday we get a couple of dry days, thursday and friday. A some of the warmest spots close to 70 degrees to finish off the workweek. It would not be a weekend in 2024 without at least one chance of rain. And thats going to arrive on saturday. That looks pretty light, but itll be out there. Dry weather on sunday and then yet another chance of rain heads our way monday and tuesday of next week. Eventually were going put together a stretch of three, four, five consecutive dry days. Its just not going to happen any time soon, sara . Oh my gosh. And its a monday. You cant talk, my ear piece is falling out. How are we even going to get through . Mass hysteria. To 11 35. 15 minutes to go. Vern is going to carry us through a lot of it, thank goodness. The blizzard put a lot of peoples weekend plans on hold, but not one bride and groom. Chloe and chris tied the knot surround bid fresh snow at a golf resort in truckee. Sleeveless, thats brave. The whiteout made it a perfect background for photos. The bride was upset about the weather at first but decided it wasnt going to stop her from celebrating her big day. Monday and tuesday i think i cried more than i have ever in my life. Wednesday my planner thought i was going to cancel it, but she was a trooper and just kept the show going on. The photos came out really nice. The couple had originally invited more than 160 people. Straight ahead in sport, we got the top two Boys High School basketball teams battling it out for state tomorrow night. And another former athletics player looking to shine for the giants to the delight of the manager. I have been trying to gauge giants fans excitement heading into the season. Right. Its been a mixed bag. Some frustration. Hes trying. Hes still trying to piece some things together. He knows people dont want to see, whos number 74. Yeah. They dont what to do that. So hes working on some things. We got baseball up top, folks. About three and a half weeks away from opening day and the giants are still filling up its roster. Look at matt chapman in the cage. Scottsdale today. The giant os officially introduced the new third baseman to do this at the hot corner. Can you see why hes a fourtype gold glover . Played the last two seasons in toronto, but before that spent five seasons in oakland with then manager bob melvin, reaching the postseason three times. Before that the team was broken up. Just seems like it was destiny. I think we got some unfinished business. Have an opportunity to be in an organization like the giant, you know a team thats not afraid to spend a team thats not afraid to go get free agents and keep guys together and keep adding, all the things you would expect, you know a winning franchise to do. Now we have the opportunity to do that here. And i couldnt be more excited to be a part of that. Meantime, former as third baseman Josh Donaldson said adios career today after 13 seasons. Bringer of rain was his twitter handle because he could rake and hit them high. The all star had reached the playoffs three times in oakland then won the al mvp with toronto in 2015. Switching to the nfl. K. J. Wright, who spent ten years as a seattle linebacker, will join san franciscos staff as an assistant linebackers coach. The biggest boys matchup will be the open Division Final between number one seed solesion and archbishop reardon. Solesion is 3061 looking for their first ever open state title. But the pride, they know that winning tomorrow would also be huge. Itll be one step closer to where we all want to get to. And if we were to win, you know, the job wouldnt be finished, we still have one more game left. But to win tomorrow it would be really big. Its a group that deserves every accolade that comes their way. We know its not going to be easy. We know that these game sometimes come down to one or two plays. But it would be a lot of fun if we could get a couple more wins. Thatd be great. Coach doesnt have to say much. Shows up, blows a little whistle, and the boys know exactly how to run their practice. And did you know that reardon has won 16 straight games . Their last loss to solesion about a month ago. I know the kids, mine included, have learned their ittybitty basketball skills in in the reardon gym. Hopefully some of that rubs off. Okay. We can only i cant pick a favorite, i like them both. I know. Im sure ha the parents feel differently, but well see what happens. Vern, thank you so much. Many Restaurant Owners in oakland could really use a break from breakins. Now dozens of eateries have a chance to shine. A pair of, shall we say, unusual fugitives on the run stopped traffic in cleveland when they decided to go straight up the freeway. Get this, these horses are cops. Huh. They escaped from the stables at the Cleveland Police department. They were eventually corralled before they could hurt themselves or anyone else or live the life of crime they always dreamed of. A big week for Business Owner who is could use a break. We talk a lot about oakland restaurants being repeat targets for crime. Next week dozens of them will be putting their resiliency on display along with a lot of fantastic food at oakland Restaurant Week. Tonight the city hosted a bit of a preview party. Imagine 130 restaurants telling us all about their special offerings or different recipes and different specials that they can share with the public. Oakland Restaurant Week kicks off on march 14th and runs all the way through the 24th. Lots of good food in oakland. Im sure a lot of you are excited to try that. What would you do if you saw this heading straight for you . Looks like a nightmare, but it is very real for people in one unlucky part of the country. What do i see in peter dixon . I see my husband. The father of our girls. I see a public servant. A man who served under secretary clinton in the state department. Where he took on the epidemic of violence against women in the congo. I see a fighter, a tenacious problemsolver. Who will go to congress and protect abortion rights and our democracy. Because he sees a Better Future for all of us. Im peter dixon and i approved this message. So we had a lot of weather this weekend. It was pretty eventful. And there has been eventful weather elsewhere too. And one of the things thats tough about weather weekends like the ones weve had is entertaining the kids. Dont i know it. Theyre totally zoned out. Whatever iteration of halo for my youngest son, hes up for it. Video games for some reason just suck their attention right in. But you know what, there is like a merging of the two ideas, because these kids in utah got to live a video game in real life courtesy of the weather. Its like frogger sort of. Youll see what im talking about in a second. Tumbleweeds have inundated parts of utah and nevada. Ugh. I know. Sensory just cringe. Look at that. Thousands of them. Its a mess. Its also kind of fun, though, if youre playing dodge the tumbleweed. There were some kids on bikes hopefully we have the video for you. I hope we have the video. And they were riding their bikes through al of this. Look at that. It looks like sort of like a scary movie where they take over. A tumbleweed version of attack of the killer tomatoes. Doesnt this look fun . Until you get smacked by one of them. Theyre crunchy, you know. Theyre also deceptively solid. If you drive over them, you can scratch up the paint of your car. Not fun. Can they knock you over with the force of the wind . If youre not ready for it. The wind is strong enough. Even if theyre dead they spread the seeds if lift the clouds off of.
