Snowfall today and tomorrow making travel in the mountains nearly impossible. This is what it looks like on interstate 80 at Donner Summit. Right now completely covered in fresh snow. Chain controls in effect along interstate 80 and highway 50 caltrans. No warning people to avoid heading up until after the storm. Hundreds of officers patrolling the roads right now to help keep drivers safe. If we are not getting any calls, we are constantly driving this freeway. And when we see a person stuck, we assist them. I have had luggage packed in this patrol car and people stuffed in here. We get them off the hill. We get them to safety. The heavy snow and strong winds can cause an avalanche. That is forcing ski resorts to close. This is video from palisades. 17 inches of snow. By the end of the storm, they could see over 100 inches of fresh powder. Palisades and alpine are closed for the day. Kirkwood off the also announced they are closing. Not all resorts are shutting down. Emily ski resort is staying open at least for now. It is only getting worse up there as we speak. Last night there was reported 145mileperhour winds at the peak of palisades. That wasnt even the bulk of the storm. In the bay area it is cool, cloudy, mild for us with light showers moving offshore. First alert doppler getting a lot more active not only for us in the bay but definitely for our friends in the sierra where this will be one of the largest storms they have seen in the past couple years. They started off with a winter storm warning earlier this week. Now it is up to a blizzard warning. Widespread from donner into mayer valley. Kirkwood expected to get some of the most snow. Storm widespread throughout the region. In the bay we are getting a taste of the rain too. Now we are starting to see thunderstorm activity to the north too. So the storm is definitely causing a lot of issues out there as we head home from work or school today. Its going to cause a lot of issues for our friends in the sierra where the blizzard warning will last all throughout the weekend. Anywhere from 5000 feet and above, they are forecasting 5 to 12 feet of snow. Wind gusts are the big concern too. Anywhere up to 115 Miles Per Hour. Palisades already seeing stronger than that. We will continue to watch the storm ramped up throughout the afternoon and evening hours tonight. In the bay area as we head into the afternoon hours, heavier storms are starting to form in the north bay. We will continue to watch that to the south and i will have more on this coming up in a bit and we will timed out in a little bit too. Carter evans continues what people are dealing with right now. The snow has been falling steadily for hours. Its just going to get worse as the day goes on. That is donner pass road behind me. It is closed right now. We did make it up there yesterday to the Central Sierra Snow Lab where we spoke with their lead scientist, who said we could break snowfall records this weekend. Reporter the plan is to transform saint anns concrete campus into a stormwater schoolyard thanks to a grant from the San Francisco Public Utilities commission. Excited for you guys to see it. Reporter sarah bloom is the senior watershed planner with the puc which has awarded 20 grants to schools, art groups and parks. The main goal is to divert storm water. Climate changes here. We will see more and more intense storms. Green infrastructure is one of the many tools in our toolbox we have to manage stormwater, especially during these larger storms. Reporter last summer, heavy equipment ground and construction began. Big storms can overwhelm the citys antiquated sewer system , backing up drains and flooding streets. One way to manage the wrong office to build special gardens where the rain soaks into the earth or is captured for reuse. At saint anns, workers created and planted several gardens. The students helped select native plants , which will be grown in special soil. They will bring in specially engineered soil called bio retention soil which is a mixture of different types of compost materials and sand that allow the storm water to flow through it quickly. Reporter the rain that falls on the schoolyard and roof will now flow into the gardens. We take that downspout and disconnected. And then we will feed that water straight into the rain garden. With the addition of the water coming from the yard and the roof, these rain gardens are doing a lot of heavy work when it rains. Reporter workers installed a special permeable pavement that acts like a sponge. Pour water on the paper and it will soak into the ground. Reporter under one garden, a large drain holds heavy runoff allowing it to slowly percolate into the soil. As for the water it goes into the groundwater. Reporter underneath saint anns is the largest groundwater basin in San Francisco called the westside basin which stretches 40 square miles from Golden Gate Park to burlingame and san mateo county. After months of ripping up concrete, installing pipes, pavements and planting gardens, the big storms are here. So far so good. Weve had lots of rain and the gardens have absorbed all the moisture that has come in and the downpour from the rooms. Beautiful and i can see they are taking a lot of water so they can grow. Its been a really wonderful project for the kids to get more engaged and become more aware. Lets look at the doppler throughout the bay area. Waking up and out the door it wasnt that bad but now its picking up into the afternoon. We will continue to watch the rain and that system move to the east. Really impacting the sierra with the strongest winter storms weve seen so far this year. In the past couple years. The last time we saw this amount of snow was in 2020. Kirkwood getting hit the heaviest anywhere from 5000 feet and above they are expecting close to five to 12 feet of snow. This is no joke. If you were going up there , this is not the weekend to do so. Maybe early next week after the storm comes to an end. Soda springs into Donner Summit are expected to get anywhere from nine to 12 feet of snow. Traveling will be an issue. If you have loved ones who live up there, checking on them because they are dealing with one of the strongest systems building into the afternoon. Back in the bay we are dealing with a lot of rain into the evening tonight. And early morning. This is the time to chill. Many of us getting off work and school around 5 00 or 6 00 and thats when the rain will ramp up your give yourself space on the roads. Tomorrow morning a similar trend with onandoff showers on saturday and sunday. Looking at the longrange models, we will see lingering showers monday and tuesday. Widespread throughout the state.
