Now early sunday morning, overnight hours and now closer 40, potentially even 50 up in the north bay. With breezy conditions stretching all the way down intestine soften beach. This lasts as we head into the sunday afternoon and the reason why this is such a concern is because that air is going to be very dry and relative humidity drops and we are left with a fire weather watch all throughout this weekends forecast. Yes, some people open to the idea. They say lets give it a try and others not sure that this is going to make much of a difference. But Oakland Police saying they want to give it a chance because they want to take a new approach to what really has been a problem they have been facing for quite some time. Again, they want to remind folks that you should never try to stop a crime in progress. But now in addition to trying to get photos and videos safely, they want you to send it to them directly on social media. Oakland police have created special accounts on instagram as well as on x. Thats formerly known as twitter and theyre asking people to dm there directly just for the weekend. Start using the accounts today to give people a way to send them information about car burglaries as theyre happening. Police say that theyve already had 11,300 car burglaries when the doors were locked. So theyre hoping by having staff monitor these accounts during the weekend, they can share information throughout the department faster. So listen to one resident who says these criminals are so aggressive we might as well give it a try. Another questioning if this really is the right direction. Someone followed one of the cars into the garage. And they were driving a stolen car. So to compound their problems, the gate doesnt open without an opener. And so they had to ram and ram and ram the gate. Issue of crime in oakland. In response to crime in oakland is so complex. That you cant solve it with twitter. [ laughter ] right . And they want to address crime. We have to address all the structural issues. Reporter so again, this is available today through the weekend. The accounts are on instagram and x and you want to look for the handle which is at oakland autoburg. State senator scott wiener introduced a new bill that would make prosecuting car breakins easier. A new report says youd pay less in new york than in the bay. Plus why 49ers fans should feel better about brock burrdys chances of playing this sunday. You know when you think of expensive bay area real estate, we know San Francisco tops your list in your mind. A new ranking from u. S. News and world report. Well it proves it. San francisco is ahead of new york city when it comes to pricey places to live. Maybe you are shopping for a house right there behind us this morning. But as Andrea Nakano shows us, over that bridge you see in the distance . Theres a city thats more expensive than new york city as well. Reporter bay area residents know housing is not cheap. But vallejo and fairfield . Interesting. Reporter noelle waring and aleksie von disterlo live in vallejo and they were surprised at first to hear their area costs more to live in than new york city, but feel it kind of makes sense. Having San Francisco being as expensive as it is, people get pushed out to these other regions. Lafayette, walnut creek, concord and then people are living there get pushed out further. Reporter the ranking by u. S. News and world report took into account the median gross rent and annual housing costs among other factors to figure out which areas need the most wealth to live comfortably. With housing costs going through the roof, most have trouble making ends meet. Its so expensive. Its you know, i work and live in the bay and i have lived here my whole life and even working fulltime, im an amazon driver, and thats not enough money to pay the bills. Reporter so for aleksie and noelle, theyre always looking for ways to evolve in their careers. Constantly trying to scale up. Thats the only way to really survive out here is to constantly be looking for push, push, push. For ways to increase your skillset. Reporter at this rate, noelle and aleksie say they may end up being priced out of california entirely. Were looking at montana maybe. Yeah. Its cheap, its beautiful. Yeah. So montana and i was even thinking oregon before too. Well, in case you are wondering, san diego topped the list followed by los angeles, San Francisco number six and salinas, i know. Number seven. Santa rosa number eight. I think what you said earlier, gianna, is you know, its a california issue. Right . Its why were seeing californians when i moved from las vegas, people knocked on our doors saying will you sell us your house . Because i mean theyre trying to find places that are more affordable to live. Because it just with everything groceries and gas. All of it. I waited an hour in costco to get gas because im going to live like 50cents a gallon. So worth it. I think of salinas though. A farm Worker Community there and its so expensive. There are people who work shift after shift after shift and never get ahead. I think that were going to see this come up especially if governor gavin newsom i think hes going to run for president. Hell be asked on the National Stage about california and the reality that people are moving out of california. Me too. Lets check that forecast with jessica right now and meanwhile while we are here in california we love it. We love the weather because honestly its chilly and windy this weekend but the sun will be shining. Overall we have the best weather in the country. I will say this though. I was on the phone yesterday with my friend who lives in florida. And i was telling him how excited i was to go to the gas station over in orinda because its 5. 09. I was like oh my gosh, thats the best gas station and its cheap and i love it. I was going to the east bay anyways. He was like, gas in florida right now is like 2. 30. And i felt sick to my stomach. Thats the reality we live in though. It is. It is. Paid 4. 89 yesterday yes, sir, really excited about it too. So crazy. But anyways lets take a look at the bay area forecast and hey, if you have a cheap gas station feel free to dm me or message me. I am always using gas buddy here in the bay area to stay you know, somewhat frugal. Especially with how expensive it is right now. Heres a look at our temperatures throughout the bay area this morning. I know gas is cheap in certain pockets of san jose. San jose right now sitting at 45 degrees this morning. We are off o a chilly start and heading to the gas station right around the corner this morning, bundle up and grab the layers and hey, heading to work within the next 15 minutes or so definitely grab something warm to drink too. 50 degrees in San Francisco right now and 42 never toe and stretching all the way up into the north and actually in the 30s right now. Its chilly this morning near petaluma all the way over into santa rosa. And as we head into this weekend, the big weather story . Oh, i hate saying this. But its the fire weather watch thats issued for all the highlighted zones and counties on the map right behind me. Take a look at this in one of the local areas specifically throughout the valleys up in the north bay you guys are the ones im watching closely. Heres whats happening. Heading into the weekend our fire danger index starts to increase. This is widespread throughout the bay area. But really isolated up in the north bay. As winds start to really kick up and to add to that also dry conditions and relative humidity drops and notice how these numbers really start to increase. 7s and 8s in sonoma as soon as saturday evening and continue to keep a close eye on that. Because the winds are picking up heading into this weekend. If you have halloween decorations outside, secure them. Somehow. I mean, maybe add some extra tape and maybe tie something around a pole. I dont know. No matter what though, if you live up in the north bay you will be feeling some gusty conditions saturday afternoon heading into those overnight hours. Wind gusts in those overnight hours anywhere up to around 45 to 50 Miles Per Hour up near sonoma all the way up into angwin. A very similar trend near napa and i mineablesy conditions in the coastline too early sunday morning near stinson beach. As the system moves its way through it will expire late sunday afternoon. But it is going to be a windy weekend ahead of us and its halloween weekend too. So just be prepared for that. Relative humidity will drop a lot into the afternoon hours and we dont get a good overnight Recovery Process heading into sunday a very similar trend but well keep you updated on the forecast. For no, maam over to you, gianna. All right, thank you. Our director mike just telling me gas was around 2. 60 in ohio. So yeah. Completely different here in the bay area and heres the good news. Friday height on the freeways. Wasting that expensive gas. In fact if you are at the bay bridge, no brake lights or issues right now. A nice ride working your way out of the east bay and out of oakland and emeryville right now heading into San Francisco. So hopefully it stays that way. Just be careful as always especially really dark and leave some space between you and the car in front of you as always. If the windy conditions might affect the drive this weekend in the larger more highprofile vehicles, its two hands on the Steering Wheel kind of weekend so keep that in mind as well. I want to show you some conditions here across the bay bridge. So its a little crowded across the upper deck but speeds arent too bad. If you are headed on the lower deck, the eastbound side of the bay bridge, just a headsup theres a broken down vehicle blocking lanes and its still quite early not a lot of cars plus its countercommute. But anything like that on the bridges will certainly cause a pretty big backup. Watching that but right now you should be good for the most part. All right, lets take a look at traffic in the south bay. A closure north 85 connecting on to 101. All lanes now open and you have the thumbs up and in fact scale of 1 to 5 if you are traveling out of san jose right now, probably at a 1 or 2. Moving along pretty nicely this morning. Time right now 6 20. The dubs are back in action tonight in sacramento. Just a little east of here. What they really need to work on to get the first win of the season. And good morning to our friends revving up in redwood city. Look at that beautiful display. Now set a tone on your phone to change the channel at 7 00 a. M. To pix 44 cable 12. Well t 49ers they got some good news in regards to the status of quarterback brock purdy. Heres matt lively with this mornings red and gold report. Reporter brock purdys chances of playing this sunday appear to be a lot higher than they were on wednesday. Purdy took part in practice on thursday as he continues to try and get cleared from concussion protocols before this weekends game against the bengals. No player in the league has been cleared from protocols in less than a week. But practicing is a positive step. As for how much purdy didnt practice . Well, tight end George Kittle played coy. He practiced in full today or was it sam that came in on 11 11 stuff . You can ask kyle about that. You were the you were not at practice. If you havent asked kyle yet. You can ask kyle about that one. In the short time we were out there, it looked like brock was slinging it today, like he never left. Felt like he was slinging it to me too, man. Reporter for the red and gold report, im matt lively. Well, the warriors are taking on the sacramento kingston. Draymond green will miss another game with that injury. But coach steve kerr says green could return during the dubs upcoming three game road trip. So tonight the warriors will look to find their shooting touch in sacramento. And tuesdays opener, golden state shot under 36 . So that is the lowest shooting percentage in a home game under steve kerr. But the newest dub chris paul, hes not too worried about the offense going forward. I aint really worried about the shooting you know. Ive been on a team that missed 27 straight threes. [ laughter ] you know what im saying . I dont think thats going to be the case over here. Knock on wood. You know. Yeah we dont want a game like that. That game paul was referring to when the rockets missed 27 straight threes. That was game seven of the 2018 western conference finals. And they lost to the warriors. All right, well the reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams and his 24th ranked trojans are going to visit cal tomorrow. It will be the 110th meeting between the bears and trojans. But it actually could be the last. Both schools will be playing in difference conferences starting next season and cal head coach Justin Wilcox is not too happy about it. Its really sad. You know . And kind of shameful the way this whole thing went down. I have a lot of strong feelings about it. And its i dont know you know, i know for the fans of the conference, of the schools individually, its its a sad deal. Kickoff is farm at 1 00 p. M. In cal. Another winter storm season, california is bracing for the possibility of more heavy rain, snow and flooding. The lessons state agencies are taking from last years historic storms. Plus, start thinking of cool names for black cats. Animal shelters reminding us about their beauty as we approach halloween. Heres a live look outside. Climbing to the top of mount diablo. You can see the twinkling lights . They belong to somebody, somebody down there in walnut creek, we wish you all a good mornin at cretors, we handcraft every batch of our delicious popcorn. Like our cretors cheese and caramel mix. Great on their own, even better together. Try cretors, handcrafted smallbatch popcorn. 6 30 in the morning right now on cbs news bay area, you see them there. An army of helpers boots on the ground to find the suspect in mass shooting. Bradley blackburn live in lewiston, maine this morning where schools and businesses, bradley, we understand are completely locked down and we see the road closed and subway shuttered behind you. Reporter everything is closed down here right now, reed. This is a community thats frozen in fear with the suspect still on the run. But theyre also trying to find ways to grieve and honor the lives that have been lost. But the priority for Law Enforcement at this hour is continuing this manhunt. We now know it stretches across the entire state of maine from the border with canada all the way down to massachusetts. At least 80 fbi agents, along with coast guard members, atf agents, and local police are involved in the search for suspected gunman robert card. Authorities say card has been charged in connection to wednesdays deadly shootings at justintime recreation Bowling Alley and schemengees bar grille in lewiston, maine. He should be considered armed and dangerous. Based on our investigation, we believe this is someone that should not be approached. Reporter police say the 40yearold suspect is an Army Reservist and expert marksman, who was recently hospitalized for Mental Health issues, including hearing voices. Hes got a lot of problems up in his head right now. One of them is schizophrenic. Reporter a neighbor says nothing seemed unusual when he saw card two weeks ago. Its crazy. I have a neighbor that did something really horrible. Reporter as investigators search for a motive in the attacks, members of this community are grappling with the sudden and tragic loss of their loved ones. Arthur barnard left his oldest son, 42yearold arthur strout, at the bar grille just minutes before the shooting began. Strout was among those killed. In the end, he was by himself. You know, no family. Kills you. Reporter lewiston and other nearby towns have been asked to shelter in place again today. Residents say they hope the suspect is caught soon and brought to justice. And there is a tragically familiar visual vocabulary following a mass shooting. Whats different here is that were not seeing what we normally do. We dont see a makeshift memorial here outside the Bowling Alley because people are heeding this warning and sheltering in place with this suspected shooter still on the run but they are, reed, finding ways to honor the loves that have been lost. We know that folks are losing online vigils and telling stories online about all the individuals and some of the heroism we have heard about. The stories of what happened inside this Bowling Alley. When these tragedies happened, we need each other and im so glad that people are at least making a space online where it feels safe to do what we see so often. But we also see in the wake of scat, like this, the big question, how did somebody who is known to have Mental Illness get a gun like this . Any discussions that way today . Reporter reed, that is one of the real questions here. He had a known history of Mental Illness. That episode over the summer when he was hospitalized. He was known to to his commanders in the military and also to his own family members. So there are going to be some real questions about what happened in this specific case. But on a larger level, maine is one of the states in the country with more lax gun laws. This state doesnt have a red flag law that would allow officials to take weapons away from somebody who is deemed a threat to others. And so other gun laws have also been proposed and defeated here. This is a state that has a long relationship with hunting and shooting and sports. We will see how they move forward. All right, thank you, bradley, so much, please be safe where you are as well. We understand the manhunt will be nonstop today, tonight, and throughout the weekend. The minute this man is caught, you will hear it here on kpix and also streaming on the cbs news app and online at kpix. Com. Lets get a live look right now outside on this friday morning. You were looking over the city of san jose. Good morning to you. Home of the sharks our San Jose Sharks played s. A. P. And theyll be back in action tonight. Not at home. On the road. But back at home on november 2nd. As we approach halloween if you are going to dress up in a San Jose Sharks or a 49er jersey or you know the warriors, tweet us that picture as well. You might see it on tv. Jess, do you have plans to dress up for the holiday. I think im going to wear my Vegas Golden Knights jersey. Uhoh. Dont tell the sharks that. Shh. Its too late. Were in the territory everyone is waking up this morning hearing me say that out loud. Just kidding but hey go knights. Anyways least start down in the Santa Clara Valley, sharks territory as were waking up this morning. Clear skies over the Santa Clara Valley and were waking up to some chilly, chilly temperatures. 45 degrees right now in san jose. 44 in los gatos. As we stretch all the way off into in east bay this morning, were seeing a very similar trend. 47 degrees in antioch. And as we head all the way up into San Francisco, 50degrees with 30s stretching up into the north bay. Overnight lows ho they were chilly for us and heading into this weekend, it will pretty much remain the same. Right now were seeing a little bit of clouds mixed in the forecast for us. We wont be seeing rain for quite some time at least heading into our weekend forecast. Al show showers stay offshore well continue to see a mix of sun and clouds into this afternoon but thats not the big weather story. Heres whats happening in the weekend forecast. Daytime highs, theyre still going to stay chilly but were going to start seeing gustier conditions and wind speeds anywhere up to around 3040, even 50 Miles Per Hour up in the north bay as were sandwiched between high and low pressure. On shore and offshore. Now heres what were looking at heading into the afternoon hours on saturday. Now im advancing the clock and getting past today and going straight into saturday all the way into the early sunday morning forecast. In the overnight hours on saturday, heading into sunday, we can see wind gusts anywhere up to around 40, even 50 Miles Per Hour. The windy conditions last into the afternoon hours on sunday. Thats the reason why the National Weather service has issued a fire weather watch. That mixed with the fact that relative humidity will stay low, is causing some issues especially for that fire danger index. So we start seeing this increase as we head into saturday afternoon. Windy conditions means gear up and make sure all the halloween decorations are secured and to add to that, taking a look at the relative humidity, well have more on that in a bit. Its doing to be a dry one heading into this weekend and want to be very careful heading outdoors. More own that for now over to you, g. Could affect the drivers and the larger more highprofile vehicles as well. So just keep that in mind as we hit the roadways this weekend. This morning, though, its a little calmer and quieter right now on this friday. As you head across the golden gate bridge. Live look here. No fog to slow you down. And visibility looking just fine for the most part. And quiet conditions there. Now were starting to see that slight little bit of backup here right at that toll plaza area at the bay bridge. Metering lights were on around an hour ago and not too much of an issue. Definitely friday night. A little slow across the upper deck heading into San Francisco. Well, lets keep talking about what goes on on our roadways. Traffic deaths in san jose in the headlines again this morning. With word a pregnant woman died in a hit and run crash. Were talking about 21yearold April Zoglauer driving on the road when she was hit and died. Police say the driver of a hyundai hit her and then abandoned the car and ran away leaving her to die in the street. Well, she was seven months pregnant and you see her right there getting ready for the baby. Doctors delivered that baby but he did not survive. Jocelyn moran spoke with one of aprils Close Friends calling for the suspect to do the right thing and surrender. She was such a special person. You know . You couldnt know april and not love april. Reporter tammy lariz says April Zoglauer truly cared about everyone. April was friends with tammys kids and lived with them. And she worked for tammys play and learn preschool. Tammy tells us april was planning on going to hawaii wednesday morning. In the morning, my youngest daughter woke up and she came to my room and said, mom, april didnt come home. And i said, well shes leaving for hawaii and she said yeah, but her luggage is still here. Reporter tammy later that day found out what happened. On tuesday night, april was driving down blossom hill road when a white hyundai hit her. Two people in the hyundai ran off and april, who tammy says was just about 27 weeks pregnant, died at the hospital. People have been stopping by the crash site to leave candles and flowers and tammy tells us april was excited to be a mom. He was going to be devonte aaron zoglauer. She had been getting the babys room ready and buying clothes for him. Weve all got clothes and strollers and car seats. Reporter Police Confirmed the baby was delivered alive via csection and tammy tells us he died wednesday night. All of us got to hold him and say our goodbyes to him. Im glad hes with his mom. Im glad that april gets to hold her baby. Im glad april gets to have him in heaven with her. I really am. So much pain in that community. We dont have a suspect description yet but police tell us this morning, that that hyundai was stolen. Gianna . Oh. That is just so hard. All right, at least 27 people have r dead and hack pulmokoa, mexico after hurricane otis tore through the city this week and many were left devastated as a result of this storm. The recordbreaking category 5 storm took many residents by surprise. Now survivors are surveying the damage as they wait for aid to arrive. And hundreds of thousands of homes are still without power across the region. Mexicos president says his top priority is restoring the power in the area. Jessica. El nino is expected to strengthen in december and local and state agencies are bracing for what could be another big year of more water. Last winter ended up being the sixth wettest year in state history. With over 33 inches of rain recorded and snow pack over 200 of normal. I think what was highlighted in this past year was some regions that we normally traditionally dont see floods in or at least we have not seen in recent history, saw extreme impacts. Now they are doing more prep ahead of time with 67 million invested into levee repairs creating longer flood walls, and filling two million more sandbags and adding extra emphasis to certain regions like the Sacramento Valley and the Central Valley too. And its crazy to think you know, we had such a wet winter this past winter. Those atmospheric rivers we had 17 of them hit the state. You know . We saw the impacts here in the bay area. So to think that were gearing up for another wet and warm winter. Luckily were starting to prepare wellhead of time. Is it going to be as bad as last time do you think. Forecasters are saying its expected to be wetter a lot of emphasis on preparing and on that story alone. So you know, were thinking about the coastal cities like your neck of the woods too. All the planning and i mean were the home alone and i know some of the neighbors are kind of down the same thing. Wrapping up any Construction Projects and cleaning the yards do make sure its safer. Your neighbors are probably helping each other too. With that time now 6 40. Lawmakers, theyre shaking a finger at you camp site reservation hoarders. And theres some new moves to stop those of who you make it harder for the rest of us to reserve a camp site at a national park. Do i sound grouchy this morning . Its cranky coworker day. Im not kidding. Dont be a cranky cowoker, its friday. Heres a live look outside and how can you not at this beautiful view of the sun coming up .
